Looking for a way to have fun and to help out the environment? There is lots to do and learn when it comes to being sustainable. Here are a few ideas to get you started.
MEAL PLANNING IN FOUR EASY STEPS – LOVE FOOD HATE WASTE Avoid food waste—practise the art of meal planning to buy only what you need and will use so you are not wasting food and money. When making a meal plan: 1. 2. 3. 4.
Check the refrigerator to see what needs to be used up first. Plan a meal to make with the found ingredients. Check the pantry for the rest of the ingredients. Add missing items to your shopping list.
Once you have an idea of what meals you can make with the food you already have, add a couple of family favourites to your weekly list and keep your list on the fridge. Learn more at Kamloops.ca/LoveFoodHateWaste.
DRY WOOD = MORE HEAT Wood burns most efficiently when the moisture content is less than 20%. Wet wood does not burn completely, which results in a smoky fire and creosote build up that put your health and home at risk. Wood‑burning best practices: • Test your wood before you burn it! Inexpensive moisture meters are available at most hardware stores. • Season your wood by splitting, covering, and storing it for 6‑12 months. • Dense wood, such as BC Yellow Birch and Douglas Fir, produces more heat. • Burn small, hot fires to maximize heat and reduce wood use and air pollution. • Clean ashes out of your fireplace or wood stove. • Upgrade your appliance to an EPA‑certified stove, which can save you money and produce less smoke. For more information, visit Kamloops.ca/WoodBurning.
TEXTILE RECYCLING Did You Know? On average, each resident discards 37 kg of textiles per year. This results in about 3.4 million kg of waste that could have been repurposed! Help keep textiles out of the landfill by donating unwanted textiles to a thrift store or a dropping them off in a clothing donation bin. To learn more, visit Kamloops.ca/Textiles.
THERMAL IMAGING CAMERA Borrow a thermal imaging camera and take home a free FortisBC draft‑proofing kit. With the camera, you’ll be able to see how well-insulated your home is. Then, make simple improvements using your kit! For more information, visit Kamloops.ca/SeeTheHeat or your TNRD library.
CHRISTMAS TREE RECYCLING Recycle your Christmas tree at a designated location from December 27 to January 15. Recycled trees save landfill space and produce compost material for use in parks and gardens. To date, Kamloops has recycled close to 150,000 trees! Ensure your tree is free from tinsel, metal hooks, lights, and decorations before recycling. To find a drop-off location, visit Kamloops.ca/ChristmasTreeRecycling.

The best way to warm up your vehicle is to
drive it, don’t idle it! Vehicle manufacturers recommend idling for no longer than 30 seconds to warm up because: • vehicles reach optimum operating
temperatures faster by driving, not idling
• excessive idling can affect the life of engine oil • non-engine moving parts (e.g. transmission) warm up by driving moderately, not idling Be sure your windows are clear before driving away.
