What Makes a Great Dance School?

2

There are lots of extracurriculars these days for children. Dance is a great way to stay active and increase endurance, co-ordination, strength, flexibility, agility, confidence and expression. Life skills that will follow your young dancer into adulthood. Because all parents want the best for their children, here are some things to consider when choosing the dance studio that will best fit your – and your child’s – needs. • First call or email the studio and ask questions about what programs they have for the age group you are looking into. • What are the fees? Are there fees in addition to the price of enrolment? • How much are costumes and are there any other fees that come up throughout the season? • What is the philosophy of the dance studio? • Is it to teach children how to enjoy dance and build many life skills? Is it to offer a safe, fun and nurturing environment ? How do they feel about the competition side of dance ? What avenues are there for your child whether they choose to compete or not compete? Does the studio recognize there is a path for recreational dancers as well?

Teachers

Your child’s dance instructors should be positive, professional and have dance experience . They should have a rapport with their students that promotes not only technical growth, but confidence and nurtures your dancer. Ask what the teacher’s name will be. Talk to your dancer at home about their teacher and get them excited about meeting them. Feel free to ask about the teacher and how their journey in dance began.

Classes

Decide in what type of class you would like to enrol your child. Classes can include ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, pointe, musical theater, acro , lyrical and contemporary. Also, for younger dancers, studios will offer specialized programs for them, which is a great way to introduce them to dance. Trust the studio in guiding and deciding what level and program best suits your child. Some dance disciplines require more of a commitment than others therefore, always ask how to achieve certain classes if your child has an idea in mind, so that it’s clear how to achieve this.

Facility

Your child’s dance studio should be equipped with: • Mirrors to promote learning technique • Sprung floors to prevent injuries • Ballet barres • Age appropriate music, movements and themes.

Discipline

Remember that dance is a discipline. This starts with respect for the studio, teacher and to yourself. It is important to come weekly to class to stay committed and to always come in proper attire listed by your studio. Dance studios teach more than just dance. The relationships and respect among many other things that are taught will last a lifetime.

How to Maintain Your Pool How can I tell if my pool water isn’t balanced?

There are a few tell-tale signs you might notice if your water isn’t properly balanced. These are things like itchy eyes, dry skin, faded swimsuits, and cloudy water. Many of the signs of improperly balanced water might actually seem like they are problems with the filtration system. Make sure you’re performing routine water tests and regularly applying the correct amounts of sanitizers and water-balancing chemicals. If you’re not sure you’re performing your tests properly, or think you may have made some mistakes with the chemicals, you can always call a us to come to come and take a look for you. We offer a water analysis for free.

Is there an easier way to clean my pool?

Let’s be honest — cleaning and maintaining your pool is probably the least entertaining part of having one. It might not be much fun, but thankfully it can be a lot easier if you invest in an robot pool cleaner. The unit will pay for itself in the hours of work saved over the lifetime of your pool. Plus you will have less water loss and use less chemicals. Give us a call and we’ll let you know how easy it is.

Like any other cleaner or solvent, your pool chemicals can be hazardous if they’re not handled properly. Misuse can lead to skin irritation, damage to the eyes, or even start a fire. Keep sanitizers in a cool dry place, out of direct sunlight, and away from other chemicals. Keep them away from children. Keep them away from lawns or places they could leak into the ground. Don’t mix different products together, even if they seem to be similar. Use clean, dry plastic cups or scoops, and never put wet measuring scoops back into a container. If a spill occurs, follow the instructions for cleanup on the product label.

What else should I be concerned about?

As long as you keep your water properly balanced, you should enjoy years of problem-free use of your pool or hot tub. Eventually, though, you may need to worry about repairing or renovating the surface of the pool due to accidental damage or a natural disaster. Though some repairs — like small holes in a vinyl liner or loose tiles along the waterline — could be managed by a diligent DIY-er, most will require a trained professional. CONSUMER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BY THE EXPERTS

Top 10 Shoe Consumer Questions I always seem to get blisters. Why is that?

This is one of the top questions we get asked! Blisters are caused by friction or movement. The two most common causes we see are: 1) shoes that aren’t tied properly, and 2) cotton socks. While cotton breathes well, it doesn’t wick moisture away. A foot that’s wet or damp is much more likely to blister.

My toenails go black/blue when I run. What’s with that?

If your toenails are going black, it’s most likely because they’re hitting the end of your shoe. The two biggest reasons for this are: that 1) your shoes are too short or 2) your shoes are laced incorrectly.

I’m a walker. You don’t have anything for me, do you?

Absolutely! We have classic leather walking shoes for men and women to supplement our collection of breathable running shoes that can be used for walking.

I’ve had my shoes for five years. How do I tell when they’re worn out?

If you are feeling more achy than normal, have a recurring tender area or injury, chances are that your shoes are needing a replacement! We can assess your footwear to see if there’s any life left in them.

I have plantar fasciitis. You I have custom orthotics. Do you have can’t help with that, can you? shoes that will accommodate them? Yes, we can! We see multiple customers Yes! We have shoes that not only will fit your orthotics, but have the right support to make sure that they are being used effectively. We have hikers, walkers, runners, and even sandals that will work!

daily with a variety of foot ailments, including plantar fasciitis. We carry products like compression socks, night splints and foam rollers than can help lessen your pain and fix your problems.

WE ARE PROFESSIONAL

I heard your running shoes are more expensive than other stores. Is that true?

I’m a size 14 2E, no-one seems to carry big sizes. Do you?

The proper fit is crucial to your health, comfort & well being.

That’s a big misconception! We charge MSRP, or Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price, like all other merchants in town. The difference is, our trained staff will fit your feet to the right shoes for no extra charge!

We carry shoes ranging from infants all the way to size 22! We even have a special section in our store for large sized shoes: thirteen and up! If you need a size we don’t carry, big or small, we can order it!

My friends all wear brand How long should running shoes last “XYZ”, do you carry those? We carry over 15 different shoe brands in before I need to replace them? This all depends on you! A 270lb linebacker will need to replace shoes more often than a 125lb female triathlete. Your activity, weight, and gait will all determine how long this is. The industry standard is 500 miles or 800 kms.

the store! However, just because those shoes work for your friends doesn’t mean that they’ll work for you! Everybody’s feet are unique and need different types of support, shapes, and sizes.

“Shoe Fitters” not “Shoe Fetchers” • If you’re already a runner, bring your current running shoes with you to the store. We can look at the wear on the bottom of your running shoes to get some more insight into your running style. • Make sure you get your foot measured while you’re standing up.

• If you use orthotics or custom-fit insoles, bring them with you to try on your running shoes. You need running shoes that are roomy enough to accommodate your insoles.

• Don’t pick running shoes based on the colors or style. Just because they look cute doesn’t mean they’ll be the best running shoe for you! KAMLOOPS THIS WEEK | ASK AN EXPERT

CONSUMER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BY THE EXPERTS

Mule vs. Tractor When choosing a between a Mule and a Tractor it is important to know where and how it will be used, as well as who will be riding it. To better understand this criteria, use the questions below to help you find the perfect vehicle for your acreage.

1. Work or Play?

Are you looking for something for farming and utility work? Maybe trail riding or hunting? What about family fun? If you plan to use a UTV for work, consider the size and weight capacity of the cargo box. A Mule has a large 800 lb cargo bed capacity, is made of steel and equipped with a tilt assist for the box. What towing capacity will you require? Mules will tow up to 1000 lbs, 2000 lbs with an accessory lift. A tractor will be needed for additional weight. Will your model equipment handle the accessory tools you need? Mules are powerful and have the capability to push a snowplow or support a winch with their heavy duty front suspension. Fire up your Mule to drag logs, haul firewood, deer or tools. It’s great for spraying herbicide and broadcasting lime, fertilizer and small seeds, like clover and turnips. A Mule is a heavy duty machine, built to take more load and abuse, but when you have a big-boy task like clearing brush, levelling ground or breaking dirt to complete, use the tractor. Consider Weight: With a tractor, an

unpleasant portion of your time will be spent fixing flat tires and extracting stuck equipment from the mud, it’s the nature of the game. The heaviest Mules still weigh considerably less than tractors. Heavy tractors get stuck harder and are more difficult to move. Storage Space: The Mule is small and compact, easy to store and transport. The SX will fit into the back of a full sized pickup truck, and costs under $10,000. For purely recreational use, speed and agility are usually more important than payload capacity. Mules can reach speeds close to 75 kph, much faster than a tractor. But the Mule wasn’t designed for speed, it was made for work and to go almost anywhere you could ride. If you’ve got a big piece of property, vehicle speed might be a time-saver, and it’s certainly fun. A Mule is perfect for both work and play.

2. Where Can I Use It?

3. How many people do you want to transport or ride with you?

The new Kawasaki Mule Pro-FXR Trans Cab System has the flexibility to maximize either cargo space or people moving potential, carrying six large people and a load up mountains with ease. If you need box or passenger space, the back seats fold down and the box expands forward, providing a high level of comfort for your passengers.

4. What Mule Accessories are available?

What sort of terrain do you plan on You can customize a Mule with an endless riding on? The versatility of a Mule is array of accessories to further increase its incomparable to a tractor. It has the ability to fit in tight trails and has a turning radius capability. • Cab Roof to provide shade and rain of 11.8 ft (SX), great for manoeuvring in protection. If you will be out in the cold difficult spaces. The Mule is fun to drive a lot, fully enclosed cabs in canvas, steel with nimble handling, tilt and electric and composite materials are available, steering. Its torqueful engine and rugged as well as cab heaters & stereos. chassis are built tough making it a highly dependable partner to explore any terrain in • Windshields help cut the wind chill the backcountry. effect in cool weather. Glass is best to not attract dust and scratch. Some designs to fold down to enjoy the breeze in warm weather. • Winch- 4,500 pound capacity, because when a UTV is stuck, it really is stuck. • Blade for snow and yard/ farm work. • Gun Scabbard to transport your firearms safely. • Roof Rack to carry a boat or canoe.

Q: How can I make sure I’m getting enough vitamin C in my diet? A: Making sure you have a food specifically formulated for guinea pigs, such as Oxbow’s guinea pig food is the best place to start! Guinea pigs are herbivores and as such need fresh greens and foods rich in cellulose. The total amount of fresh foods daily is about one cup. You can also add Oasis Vita-Drops for guinea pigs and Oxbow Vitamin C, both of which contain stabilized vitamin C to support overall health.

Q: I really want to look my best! What can I do to help my colours pop?

Q: You can lead me to water, but you can’t make me drink!

A: Diet is one of the easiest ways to enhance your colour. Foods to try would be blood worms or shrimp, in freeze dried or frozen form, to help your reds and oranges. Foods containing algae or spirulina will help your blues and greens sparkle! Nutrafin Max Colour enhancing flakes and Fluval Colour Enhancing Pellets would be great choices!

Q: Will I get dehydrated if all I eat is kibble?

Q: We’re going on a trip and I’m nervous about being in the car!

A: If you feed a kibble only diet (especially a lower quality kibble) with limited water intake, the chances of your pet being dehydrated is vastly increased. Make sure the water dish is full of fresh cool water or supplement with canned food, goat’s milk, raw food or other options with more moisture.

CONSUMER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BY THE EXPERTS

Everyone Can Xeriscape Why should we consider xeriscaping?

• To have beautiful surroundings options are endless, and there are many plants to choose from. • To conserve water—50–80% of residential water is used in our yards. • To minimize pest problems—landscapes suited to our climate are healthier. • To be environmentally responsible— over-watering can cause water to run off lawns and carry pollutants into storm drains. • To save time—xeriscaped yards require less watering, less mowing, and less weeding. • To save money—minimizing the costs of delivering water to our homes and businesses benefits us all.

Can I have a lawn?

Yes! Lawns can add to the enjoyment of our yards, increase property values, and help cool our homes in the summer, which reduces the need for air conditioners. However, most lawns are much larger than required and consume large amounts of water in comparison to most other plantings.

Take a look at your lawn and ask yourself these questions: •H ow much of my lawn is actually walked or played on?

• I s my lawn there because I don’t know what else to do with that area? •A re there areas that are difficult or dangerous to mow? •C ould sections of the lawn be replaced by ground covers, shrubs, or ornamental grasses that need less water and maintenance? •A re there areas where hard surfaces like walkways or decks could make the living space more practical?

Where can I get ideas?

The City is endeavouring to apply the xeriscaping principles to all newly installed city landscapes. The demonstration garden at 790 Harrington Road, at McArthur Island, and the park plantings along Lorne Street are three great existing examples that can be checked out for ideas.

What plants suit Kamloops?

Many beautiful trees, shrubs, and flowers have low water requirements. Be sure to check out the plant list in the City’s “Creating a Xeriscape” brochure available online at Kamloops. ca/HealthyLandscapes. Plants are grouped according to their water needs. If you choose plants with higher water requirements, consider creating an oasis—concentrating higher water use plants together—and then group other less thirsty plants separately.

What are some water-saving tips? Choose an irrigation method that will water the plants in each area most effectively without wasting water. Water when the weather is cool and calm. Early morning watering is best, followed by early evening. Water close to the roots to minimize evaporation.

HEALTHY LANDSCAPES, HEALTHY LIVING HAVE A LANDSCAPE YOU CAN FEEL GOOD ABOUT!

XERISCAPE

WATER PROPERLY FOR PLANT HEALTH

Xeriscape means water conservation through creative landscaping. Landscapes suited to our semi-arid climate conserve water and give plants an advantage over pest problems. Apply these principles to any style of garden and have a healthy, high-quality landscape:

Plants are constantly defending themselves against enemies. Pests prefer plants that are stressed, and one of the most common causes of stress is being improperly watered.

PLANNING AND DESIGN: Group plants according to their water use. Slope hard surfaces to drain to planted areas. Avoid steep slopes— create terraces instead. Use groundcover on gentle slopes.

OVER WATERING increases the risk of plant disease and attracts certain insects that prefer lush, weak growth. It is not in your plants’ best interest to water every second day. To encourage deep rooting and drought resistance, water deeply, thoroughly, and less often.

GOOD SOILS: Organic matter is an excellent addition to soil. It improves moisture holding capacity in sandy soils and helps to loosen clay soils.

WATER PROPERLY FOR LAWN HEALTH

APPROPRIATE PLANT SELECTION:

Drought-tolerant plants thrive here. There are many beautiful trees, shrubs, and flowers with low water needs.

PRACTICAL TURF AREAS: Replace unused lawn with other plants. Use hard surfacing for play courts, patios, and walkways. WATER WISELY: Water deeply but

infrequently to encourage deep rooting and drought tolerance.

MULCH: Apply a layer of organic matter to protect roots from the elements, enrich the soil, and control weeds. LOWER MAINTENANCE: Your landscape

will require less maintenance over time.

UNDER WATERING stresses plants, which makes them more prone to pest problems.

WATER DEEPLY: A Kamloops lawn only requires about 2.5 cm (1”) per week to keep it green. An empty tuna can is approximately 2.5 cm deep and is a great tool to test how much you water. • place several cans at different distances from your sprinkler • time how long it takes to collect an average of 2.5 cm • water this length of time about one to two times per week in the summer (depending on weather and soil type) • seasonal tip: reduce this time by up to half for spring and fall

TO DETERMINE WHEN TO WATER YOUR LANDSCAPE BEDS—squeeze a handful of soil • if it’s too dry to form a ball, you’ve waited too long • if it forms a crumbly ball, it’s time to irrigate • if it forms a ball and is slick, there’s no need to water

YOUR LAWN—step on your grass • if it readily bounces back, no watering is required • if it takes a while to recover, it’s time to water • if it lies flat, you’ve waited too long

The City’s Civic Operations Department receives many different questions on the various services we provide. Here are some of the most commonly asked questions and their answers.

How can we be better recyclers? Marcia Dick, Solid Waste Services Analyst XHow can we become better recyclers? Kamloops is part of the Recycle BC Program, which has a strong focus on reducing contamination. Contamination is when incorrect items are put into recycling bins or when the correct items are not prepared correctly (e.g. food residue in containers, recyclables in plastic bags, etc.). Recycle BC is able to keep contamination rates low through strict recycling guidelines for municipalities. This, in turn, allows the province to continue accessing markets for recycled material.

X The City used to accept glass in recycling bins. Why can’t we put glass in recycling bins anymore? Recycling has changed over the past few years. Broken glass contaminates other materials. So, in order to effectively recycle glass, it has to be taken to a depot. This allows for safer hauling and sorting practices and ensures that shards from broken glass do not get mixed in with paper and other products that are recycled at the curb. For more information and to find the nearest glass recycling depot, visit Kamloops.ca/WasteWise.

X The City used to accept plastic bags in recycling bins. Why can’t we put plastic bags in recycling anymore? Plastic bags are a major source of contamination as they are nearly impossible to effectively sort when they are mixed with other recycling materials. They often get missorted by sorting equipment and, as a result, they reduce the overall value of recycled paper commodities. Plastic bags also get caught in equipment, which causes costly stoppages to operations. The only way to efficiently recycle plastic bags is to take them to a recycling depot. For more information and to find the nearest depot near you, visit Kamloops.ca/WasteWise.

X Why can’t I put all my items for recycling (such as scrap metal, clothing, and electronics) into my recycling bin? The City’s recycling program has only ever accepted packaging and paper. Many other items can be recycled at various depots and local businesses because they have safe processes in place to manage the materials. Items such as batteries, paint, lights, clothing, electronics, and other usable goods have their own recycling systems. City curbside recycling is delivered to a facility that is specifically set up for sorting packaging and paper only. The Kamloops Waste Wise app provides information to users about where hundreds of items can be recycled or disposed of.

How do we manage our green space? Jeff Putnam, Parks and Civic Facilities Manager XHow do we keep our parks and green spaces looking so good? The City maintains numerous parks and green spaces in all neighbourhoods, including about 16,000 trees. We have a team of experts who use various processes and technologies to keep our green spaces, plants, and trees healthy and looking fantastic for all residents to enjoy.

X What guides the City in terms of the trees that are planted? The City is guided by an Urban Forestry Management Strategy, and we have a crew of five full-time arborists who maintain our public tree inventory. On average, each tree receives general maintenance every six to eight years. The overall tree canopy in Kamloops (including public and private trees) is 12%, and our long-term goal is to increase the canopy to 20%. There is a significant amount of space available for new trees in the city; however, access to irrigation water is the limiting factor.

X What does the City do to maintain its sports fields to such a high level of turf quality? Kamloops has always had a great reputation for its excellent playfields, and the recent international recognition for Norbrock Stadium as “Field of the Year” by the Sports Turf Managers Association has been turning a lot of heads. The City has a state-of-the-art turf maintenance program and a dedicated crew that takes pride in their work. Our turf maintenance strategy is a year-round program that includes goose control, special mowing techniques, irrigation programming, top dressing with a compost/sand mixture, deep-tine aeration, regular field inspections, accurate line marking, infield shale grooming/edging, litter control, and much more.

X Who do we call if we notice a problem or unsafe condition in a park, facility, or public space (for example, a broken tree branch, a large pothole, sprinkler head not turning off, excess litter, etc.)? The Civic Operations Department has a central phone number that you can call, or you can email any time to report an issue. Please provide as much detail as you can regarding the specific location and what you would like the City to do to respond to your concern. Once your request for service is logged, it will be sent to the appropriate City team to take action, and you will receive an updated response in a timely manner. We always appreciate hearing from the public about any observed conditions in our parks and facilities. Contact us at 250-828-3461 or email civicoperations@kamloops.ca.

How do our water meters work? Greg Wightman, Utility Services Manager XHow do City water meters work? Households throughout Kamloops currently pay for water on a metered rate basis. The City is responsible for maintaining residential meters as part of its water metering program.

X With respect to my water meter, what are my responsibilities as a homeowner? Homeowners are responsible for ensuring water meters do not freeze or sustain damage and are readily accessible for repair. For advice on how to protect your water meter from damage, contact the City’s Civic Operations call centre at 250-828-3461.

X How do I know how much water my household has used in one day? • Shine a flashlight over the flashlight icon on the register to turn on the LCD display. • Take a reading. • Take a second reading at the same time the next day. • The difference between the two readings is your daily water consumption. For more information, visit Kamloops.ca/WaterMeters.

X Why is my water bill so high? There can be a number of reasons for a high water bill, including a running toilet or an irrigation leak. Please call the City’s Civic Operations call centre at 250-828-3461 for assistance.

X What do I do if my water meter is leaking? Call the City’s Civic Operations call centre at 250-828-3461. Only City staff can repair, replace, or relocate water meters.

How do we compost yard waste? Emily Lomas, Environmental Services Coordinator XHow does the City use residential yard waste for composting? City yard waste sites accept a variety of materials, which are then composted. The resulting compost is used on City green spaces and is also made available for sale to the public.

X How is Cinnamon Ridge compost made? Yard waste is inspected for contamination and then fed into a large grinder, which breaks the material into fine pieces. The ground-up yard waste is then placed into large rows where natural bacteria start the breakdown process. Rows are turned by a mechanical turner to ensure uniform breakdown and provide oxygen to the bacteria in the windrow. This process continues for 3–12 months (depending on row composition and time of year). The material is then screened to remove large debris and any plastics that may have been missed at the receiving end. Finished compost is then ready for sale to the general public.

X Does the City accept dirt/sod/fill at yard waste sites? No, this material is not compatible with the composting process. Dirt, fill, and sod can be taken as clean fill (no rocks or stumps) to the Mission Flats Landfill. Stumps can be split and taken to Cinnamon Ridge Compost Facility and Yard Waste Site (up to a maximum diameter of 24”).

X Can culled or windblown fruit be taken to the City yard waste drop-off sites? Yes, windblown or culled tree fruit (e.g. apples, peaches, apricots, pears, cherries, and plums) are considered acceptable material. Clean Halloween pumpkins can also be taken to a designated yard waste site.

X Can I take noxious weeds to a yard waste site? No, noxious weeds need to be bagged and placed in garbage containers or taken to the landfill for free proper disposal. This reduces the possible spread of weed seeds that may occur during transport and handling and the contamination of our yard waste sites. Please advise the landfill that you are disposing of noxious weeds upon arrival. Learn more at Kamloops.ca/YardWaste.

The City’s Civic Operations Department receives many different questions on the various services we provide. Here are some of the most commonly asked questions and their answers.

How can we divert textile waste? Marcia Dick, Solid Waste Services Analyst XHow can we reduce the amount of textile waste being landfilled? On average, each Kamloops resident discards about 37 kg of textiles per year, which results in about 3.4 million kg of waste that could have been repurposed. Residents can support their favourite charity by donating unwanted textiles instead of putting them in the garbage.

X Where can I recycle old clothing that is ripped or stained? The clothing donation bins throughout the city accept all types of clothing and textiles, including items that are imperfect (e.g. have rips, stains, holes, etc.). Items that are not good for resale are sold to textile recyclers, where they are turned into things like carpet underlay, padding in cart seats, and rags. To find the nearest clothing donation bin, visit Kamloops.ca/Textiles.

X What can I put in the textile recycling bins I see all over town? The textile recycling bins accept any type of clothing, accessories, footwear, towels, blankets, sheets, curtains, and sleeping bags. Items should be clean and free of pet hair, dirt, and organic matter. For more information, visit Kamloops.ca/Textiles.

X I don’t have access to a vehicle. Can I put textiles in my recycling cart? Clothing is not accepted in the City’s curbside or multi-family recycling programs. Diabetes Canada and local second-hand/thrift stores offer free home pickup for many different usable goods, including textiles, electronics, sports equipment, household items, tools, luggage, bikes, and small plastic pools. Visit Kamloops.ca/WasteWise and search for clothing (reusable) to find the nearest location that accepts textile donations. To schedule a free home pickup, visit Declutter.Diabetes.ca/Pickup.

How do we keep bears away? Emily Lomas, Environmental Services Coordinator XHow can we all be more Bear Smart? Mismanaged garbage is one of the main reasons bears enter neighbourhoods. Several years ago, in an effort to reduce situations where bears become habituated in residential neighbourhoods because of access to garbage, the City introduced its Bear Smart Bylaw.

X What is the Bear Smart Bylaw? The Bear Smart Bylaw is actually part of Solid Waste and Recyclables Bylaw No. 40-59. This bylaw was very effective in reducing bear mortalities when it was initially implemented. It states that residents shouldn’t accumulate or store bear attractants (including garbage, fruit, and pet food), and garbage carts should not be placed on the curb prior to 4:00 am on collection day between April 1 and November 30 each year. Of course, bears can access garbage anywhere around your home, but a bear that is just passing through your neighbourhood and is not yet habituated to humans is much less likely to approach your home looking for food. Carts left at the curb overnight can be a buffet for bears.

X Can bears be relocated? The short answer is “not usually”. Many factors are taken into consideration before a bear is relocated, including its age, sex, type, and location of conflict behaviour. However, most bears that are in conflict are already habituated to humans and are heavily food conditioned, which means they are likely to repeat the behaviour and may become dangerous as a result. Research has shown that many relocated bears return to their former range, especially if they have found food rewards there in the past. Further drawbacks to relocation include adding stress on the bear regarding its ability to find new food sources and shelter and causing conflict with other bears using the same habitat. While relocation may make humans feel better, it does not address the root cause of human-bear conflict, which is the mismanagement of food attractants.

X What can I do to keep bears away from my property? There are easy actions residents can take to keep bears away from their properties and neighbourhoods, including: • storing garbage and recycling in a garage or sturdy, locked shed • removing bird feeders from May to November • storing pet food indoors • picking ripe fruit quickly • keeping barbecues clean • removing unwanted fruit trees

How do we dispose of asbestos? Glen Farrow, Streets and Environmental Services Manager XWhat is asbestos? Asbestos is a strong, fire-resistant mineral fibre that was used for fire protection and as insulation against heat or noise. It was also added to materials such as cement and plaster to give them more structural strength. Due to the negative health impacts from asbestos exposure, the material was phased out of the manufacturing of construction materials by the early 1990s.

X How does the City of Kamloops currently manage the disposal of asbestos-containing products? The City and its landfill contractors follow specific procedures for managing known asbestos-containing materials at City landfill sites. These procedures are in line with WorkSafeBC requirements and the BC Hazardous Waste Regulation. The disposal of asbestos-containing material is limited to the Mission Flats Landfill and is by appointment only. Appointments must be made at least 24 hours in advance of disposal and can be made by contacting the Mission Flats Landfill at 250-828-3813. Asbestos waste is a hazardous material and must never be included in your household garbage.

X What other measures are being taken by the City to manage asbestos disposal? The City, in partnership with the TNRD, is implementing new procedures to help protect workers, residents, and the environment. These procedures will be introduced later in 2019 and will include the following: • public education regarding asbestos in building materials and the health impacts of asbestos exposure • a screening process that will include the inspection of residential and commercial loads of waste construction materials at all City landfills • required laboratory testing and/or signed declaration forms depending on the type and age of construction materials being disposed of

How do we manage sanitary sewers? Greg Wightman, Utility Services Manager XHow can we keep the sanitary sewer system running smoothly? The sanitary sewer system is one of several utilities systems that the City’s Utilities Services Division manages year-round, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There are small actions residents can take to help keep this important system working optimally.

X What shouldn’t I flush? Some of the most common items incorrectly flushed include “flushable” wipes, dental floss, and feminine hygiene products. All of these items can become trapped in our sewer system pumps, which leads to expensive repairs and maintenance that taxpayers end up paying for through sewer fees.

X The plastic cap on my sewer service broke. Where can I get a replacement? Homeowners are responsible for keeping services accessible and undamaged. The plastic caps can be purchased through any plumbing supply retailer.

X How do I find the location of the City utility services closest to my home? The City has developed a Utility Locater map, which shows various utility service locations. This tool may be valuable in locating the water and sewer service locations closest to your property. The map is accessible at Kamloops.ca/UtilityServices.

X What do I do if I have a sanitary sewer blockage at my home? In the event of a blockage or backup at your home, contact a plumber. These professionals will be able to determine the source of the blockage and the responsibility for the repair.

X How do I report odours to the City? The City has a number of ways that residents can report an issue. The myKamloops™ mobile app allows people to easily report an issue from a handheld device. Issues may also be reported online at Kamloops.ca/ReportAnIssue or by phone to the City’s Civic Operations call centre at 250-828-3461.
