BOOGIE BOOGIE BOARD on The Shore Greeting from the
T
he Boogie the Bridge Society Board would like to welcome you to the 22nd Annual Boogie the Bridge! This is a year of some exciting changes for Boogie! We have adopted a new registration system and hope that you found it easy to register you and your friends and family. Our race expo and race package pickup has moved to the Valley First lounge and upper concourse at the Sandman Centre. But the biggest change of all is our new route — Boogie the Bridge runs The Shore this year! Due to the construction work that is happening on West Victoria, we were challenged with finding a new route. Our route team has worked diligently this year planning out the course, keeping in mind all the logistics involved. After consultation with the City of Kamloops and the North Shore Business Improvement Association, we’ve come up with a new and exciting route that we hope you’ll enjoy! The race starts and finishes at McDonald Park, winding its way through the neighbourhood to Tranquille Road and on to the familiar path on Schubert Drive — and of course, we still will have a ‘bridge’ to cross. McDonald Park will be the location for the mini-boogie as well as the always popular Boogie Kids Zone! With live music at the park it’s sure to be a fun time for the whole family! We feel very lucky and privileged to work with such a group of dedicated individuals and I would like to thank each and every one of the members of the Boogie team for volunteering their time to put on this amazing community event. And the fact that we are able to raise money to help out our community with our local charities of choice makes Boogie the Bridge even more special! We hope you enjoy the new changes to the event and look forward to seeing you cross the finish line! — Cathy Colborne Boogie the Bridge Society President

E
ach spring, the pitter patter of big and little feet fill the River City. From the highest trails in Kenna to the paved pathways of McArthur Island, runners are dusted off, Coaches assemble and Boogie Training commences. This year, I have the added bonus of not only being a Boogie Coach, I also get to host Boogie the Bridge on the Shore, here at Mcdonald Park. We at the North Shore Business Improvement Association are thrilled to be hosting for a few reasons: Boogie is the first large scale physical event for many of us, getting us moving after a long winter of hibernating; Boogie is a celebration of what is to come, spring, warmth and the great outdoors and; Boogie is about so much more than the challenge of running, it mirrors one of our Core Values, building community through connection, movement and contribution. Three thousand people will come together at the start line to laugh, dance and embrace friendships and then they will test themselves in overcoming mental, physical and emotional barriers. As we continue to evolve on the Shore, we are very much like these runners. We started slowly working toward completing our goals, we take great strides, have some challenges, and eventually cross the finish line having completed the distance. We also acknowledge that we will evolve and improve each and every year we run the race. On behalf of our 443 members, on the Shore; Welcome! We look forward to seeing you, cheering you on, and running the distance with you. — Jeremy Heighton, Executive Director NSBIA

Celebrating more than
B
TWO DECADES OF BOOGIE
oogie the Bridge is now old enough to rent a car. It can go to a show — any show — at the Blue Grotto. It can buy a beer in the U.S. It is 21. More than two decades have passed since 62 runners laced up in the inaugural Boogie, but founder and organizer Jo Berry is showing no signs of slowing down. Berry said the event, now a staple on the Kamloops calendar, was born during a dark time in her life. “The biggest catalyst for me was in 1998,” she said. “I lost my mom to depression. She took her own life. I was 32. It was a huge traumatic event, for sure, but it was also a huge time of growth for me.” The first Boogie was built on the same foundation supporting the event today: Movement is change. Berry and four others modelled the event after the Vancouver Sun Run. “It’s evolved since then,” Berry said. “It was an all-women’s event the first year and men wanted to come. We were like, ‘Yeah, of course.’ “I didn’t really have a vision. I wanted to make some money for the community.”
That she did. Boogie long ago established itself as one of Kamloops’ premier annual fundraising events. “I think, after the first year, it was more a vision of helping more people,” Berry said. “It’s always been about service — always.” The atmosphere surrounding the event and RunClub, Berry’s other runningrelated passion, is infectious, according to members. “My wife started RunClub a few years before I did,” Jeff Ovington told KTW. “She was just hopping up the stairs like a bunny rabbit. It got me so excited about it. I started running and I started volunteering.” Ovington said he was sold when he met RunClub instructors. “They were normal people,” he said. “They came together as one and supported one another. It really gave me the freedom to really free my mind, my body and my soul and just enjoy the Boogie training for what it is: Movement is change.” Last year, about 2,900 participants laced up for Boogie — 18 shy of the record set the previous spring, but beyond the wildest expectations Berry may have had in 1998.
Berry said she hopes the event continues to grow. “I think if we get the right pieces in place, it could be even more of a signature event for Kamloops,” she said. “The event and the training program, I don’t doubt we could have 5,000 people in Boogie in the next five years and, beyond that, who knows?” Berry is clear, though, about what she wants to see. “For Boogie, my vision is to have 5,000 to 6,000 people,” she said. “All the red, the sea of energy, the fans on the course. It’s a great event. It’s got a lot of potential — we just need outside energy to make it a signature event for Kamloops.”
The 2019 Boogie The Bridge will be held on Sunday, April 28, beginning and finishing at McDonald Park on the North Shore. Boogie will be held on the North Shore in 2019 and 2020 due to the West Victoria Street construction project, a two-year endeavour that is scheduled to begin this spring. Boogie training clinics will begin the week of March 11 Boogie offers four distances: 1-kilometre, 5-kilometre, 10-kilometre and 21-kilometre routes. F2C Nutrition was born from the vision and passion of Greg Cowan, founder and CEO, who has influenced and shaped the natural health food industry over the last 30 years. Cofounding his first business Pure Source in 1986, Greg has gone on to own and develop many health food companies and global brands including Nature’s Essence, Virox and PhD Nutrition Inc. While training for Ironman Canada, Greg struggled to
find quality, clean nutritional products to support his own training and racing needs. Frustrated with what nutrition was available on the market at the time, Greg set out to develop products that reflected his values and principles and drew upon his deep knowledge of the natural health food industry. Valuing clean, naturally sourced ingredients supported by innovative scientific research, Greg created
a robust endurance product line up. The F2C Nutrition product line not only tastes great but uses all natural, ground breaking ingredients that have the science to back them up. When he is not researching and formulating cutting edge nutritional supplements, he can be found sharing his passion for F2C, training for Ironman and riding his motorcycle.
We’re here to help you live life to the fullest with a wide selection of vitamins and supplements formulated to nourish your health and wellness.

Boogie The Bridge
BIG or SMALL W
hile Boogie the Bridge is preparing for its fun filled 22nd annual run, Mini Boogie is excited to report that it will be celebrating its 20th anniversary on April 28, 2019. Boogie founder Jo Berry reminisced about the very first Mini Boogie, which included her two daughters, who were four years old at the time, running with approximately 13 other children. The 1k Mini Boogie now has over 300 participants plus adult chaperons. Children nine years of age and under receive a t-shirt (designed by a child) and after crossing the finish line they are awarded a medal, a goodie bag filled with coupons, snacks and treats. Mascots are there to cheer the children as they cross the finish line. After receiving their medal, children and their families can participate in the fun filled Mini Boogie Kid Zone. Local sponsors provide children with free snacks, games, crafts, face painting, balloon artistry and prizes. Come celebrate Mini Boogie’s 20th year…fun for the entire family!

KELLI 2019 CHARITY OF CHOICE
PROGRAM Kamloops Early Language & Literacy Initiative
T
he KELLI Program provides early literacy information, programs and events for Kamloops families with children from birth to age 5. KELLI is the primary provider of the Parent-Child Mother Goose Program® — a circle time program that teaches families songs, stories and rhymes. Connecting
KELLI Literacy Event Macy Doll and grandma Candis Saunders at a KELLI Literacy Event. through the rhythm, sound and meaning of language helps parents and caregivers experience joy with their children and creates positive family patterns. KELLI believes that parents are a child’s first and most important teacher and empowers parents to ensure their children are ready to learn when they enter
kindergarten with strong pre-literacy skills. The funds will be used to continue to offer and grow Mother Goose programming in our community. — Maureen Doll, Family Service Director, Kamloops Community YMCA-YWCA
2019 CHARITY OF CHOICE
Kamloops Brain Injury Association
T
he Kamloops Brain Injury Association has been working since 1986 to empower brain injury survivors to live rich and full lives. We work directly with survivors and their families, helping them resolve their challenges. We also work directly with schools in the Thompson Nicola region to teach kids about how the brain works, how it can get injured and how to stay safe. Our members take part in many activities within our community, including the P.A.R.T.Y. program, where we head up to Royal Inland Hospital with Grade 11 kids and show them what can happen when you drink and drive. Showing teenagers the consequences of their choices can be very powerful. Through all of these different facets we are working to make the invisible, visible – reaching out to our community and letting them know that we’re here to help.
The funds that Boogie will provide us with will go towards activities such as: • One-on-one life skills support • Advocacy • Family and caregiver support • Facilitated support groups • Education and prevention With the help of Boogie the Bridge, we’ll be able to get our help out to a number of people who we may not have otherwise been able to reach.

The only thing holding you back is yourself.” This year will mark Emma’s second Boogie event and as a member of Run Club Plus, the training program dedicated to people with bigger bodies, she knows how discouraging the idea of learning to run can be for people. “Just walking through that door, especially being a bigger body and not having what is perceived as an athlete’s body or something like that, I was quite nervous,” Emma said. “I’d never run before. My endurance was terrible. I hate working out all that fun stuff. So it was quite daunting. “But as soon as I walked into the room, I don’t know what it is, but there’s just something about that place that you walk in and everything just feels lighter. We like to joke that it’s Jo Berry’s essence has seeped into the walls.” After two years with Boogie, Emma is planning to take it to the next level by running her first half marathon later this year. And she says she couldn’t have done it without Boogie, RunClub, and Jo Berry. “October 2017, I did not consider myself a runner. At the moment I consider myself a runner and I’m training really hard to get to a half marathon. That’s, you know, in two years and that’s all because Jo Berry and run club.”
RunClub for bigger bodies starts Monday, March 18 at 6pm More info: info@runclub.ca
