VALEDICTORIAN ADDRESS KAMLOOPS-THOMPSON SCHOOL DISTRICT 73 INTERNATIONAL STUDENT PROGRAM By Haibi Sakamoto
H
ello, my name is Haibi Sakamoto, I am an international student who has graduated from Westsyde Secondary School. It is my honour to be writing this speech as the Valedictorian for
the School District 73 International Student Program representing students from Sa-Hali Secondary School, Clearwater Secondary School, Norkam Senior Secondary School, South Kamloops Secondary School, Kamloops School of the Arts and Westsyde Secondary School. In August of 2019, I left Japan and came to Kamloops with a lot of expectations and curiosity. When I arrived, I was more excited than nervous because my mother had studied abroad so ever since I was a child I had wanted to leave Japan to live and learn about foreign cultures. However, this was short-lived, and I when I met my host family I became upset at myself. This was because I realized for the first time that I could not speak English at all and I could not understand a word my new host family was saying. I regretted my inability to speak English. However, my host family tried their best to communicate with me by using Google Translate. I still had difficulty communicating at school in Canada. The speed of the English spoken by the teachers and students was very fast and since no one used Google Translate, I had no idea what they were saying. Also, I was blessed with a lot of friends in Japan and never struggled to make new friends. yet it was difficult to make friends in Canada.
As days went on, the excitement I had before I came to Kamloops disappeared and I found myself calling my mother every night, lamenting that I wanted to return to Japan. My mother, who had studied at TRU before, knew the fun and the painful parts of studying abroad and was a good friend. So when I cried she listened to me and cried with me and when something good happened to me she was very happy for me. I started practicing grammar and pronunciation when I came home after school, and I joined the school’s Jazz Band twice a week in the morning so that I could communicate with the Canadian students around me as much as possible. Through Jazz band, I became friends with my music teacher, who introduced me to many Kamloops community bands. Through auditions, I was able to join a music band that consisted of middle and high school students, as well as an orchestra band that was mostly made up of adults. I was also asked to be the music teacher’s assistant. Through music, I was able to gain many valuable experiences in Kamloops. As Charlie Chaplin said, “Life is a tragedy when seen in close-up, but a comedy in long-shot.” In the beginning, I wanted to return to Japan many times every day, but now I can
remember with a smile that such things happened and, if anything, now I want to stay here even more. I found myself with a lot of friends around me and now I really enjoy my days. I do believe it was because of the hard times that I was able to realize how much fun I have now. There are a lot of things that are hard but do not give up and keep trying. I am sure that one day you will be rewarded, just as I was. And when that day comes, I want you to praise yourself with all your might. You are the one who knows your efforts best! Also, do not forget that the happiness I have now is thanks to many people who have supported me. I have learned that I could not have made it through all this on my own. Because of this support of the wonderful people around me, I am here today. So I would like to express my gratitude to my host family, teachers, friends and my family in Japan who have always supported me. I would also like to congratulate all my fellow International students for a successful year and to my fellow international graduates for achieving their success. Thank you

KAMLOOPS SCHOOL OF THE ARTS
KAMLOOPS SCHOOL OF THE ARTS VALEDICTORIAN SPEECH By Abbie Israel Armand
T
oday I begin my address by acknowledging that our commencement ceremony is being held on the traditional territory of the Secwepemc Nation, specifically the Tk’emlúps te Secwepemc People, who have called this land home since time immemorial. People are living, breathing stories. Legends, fairytales, hopes, dreams, memories, desires, regrets, experiences. We are stories, and what is art if not the purest form of storytelling? Friends, family, educators, mentors, administrators, and of course, my fellow graduates, on this day I hold with me a shared sense of pride far more grand than any other I have felt before. it is an absolute honour to represent our class on this monumental occasion: our graduation from Kamloops School of the Arts. Our graduation from high school is much different than most others. Now, I could discuss the ways that the COVID-19 pandemic have made this especially true, but I could not speak to anything that we have not already agonized over both collectively and individually. On behalf of the graduates, I first extend our gratitude to our school district, but most importantly, our
teachers and our incredible principles, Mrs. Latta and Mr.Lloyd. Entering into our final year of high school during this pandemic, and also receiving an email in August briefly introducing us to our entirely new admin was scary, to say the least. But this year has shown us that we could not possibly be more supported. We are truly lucky to have such a dedicated team leading us. These intimate, adapted graduation ceremonies would not be possible without their efforts, so for that we thank them sincerely. But beyond the ways that the 2020 and 2021 graduations have been different due to circumstances beyond our control, our KSA graduation stands out because I do not believe that we are any ordinary group of graduates. We are a small, but powerful class. With such colourful stories to tell and inspiring narratives that have yet to be written. We have all been here for different chapters of our lives–some since their first day of school, some hopping on in elementary school, or the beginning of highschool, or even joining later like myself in Grade 10 or beyond. During our years together, we have shared some life-changing experiences! Like Mr.McFarlane’s PE class. In all seriousness, we must be incredibly grateful for our time here at KSA. Inevitably, it was not all sunshine and rainbows, but we have been lucky–not only to have access to public education and the countless opportunities which have come from it–but to have done so while also learning through our respective art forms. I think of a phrase once said by Nelson Mandela: Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. There is no denying the fact that the first chapter of our lives has met its end. There is no running from it. This could feel like many things. Perhaps you feel a deep sadness as you say a heartbreaking goodbye to everything you have ever known in pursuit of something you do not yet understand. Perhaps you feel like you can finally breathe as your hard work pays off and you get to move on. Or maybe you are simply going to sleep tonight as a student in high school, and waking tomorrow a graduate, ready to begin
your life outside of it. “Even if we have to show up until the 29th” (it’s okay guys, we’re nearly there.) However the realization of graduation may be hitting you, it is a major change for all of us. We will not know what that means for a while yet, but what I can tell you is this: Change is freedom. Change is the only constant in this life and it is imperative that we embrace it with all of our being. You have the courage, the passion, and the curiosity to grow through all of this change that lies ahead. I look around and I see the future in us. A future of creatives, artists, lovers, dreamers, innovators, fighters, and advocates. To make it this far is a wonderful accomplishment in and of itself. Your achievements are worth celebrating. We all deserve to be proud of ourselves. We made it here. But this is just the beginning, for we have hardly scratched the surface. During this time of our celebration, we must allow the reality of the world which we are stepping into to set in. We must take time to honour the 215 children discovered beneath the Kamloops residential school grounds. A truth whispered of but never documented. While we all have futures to look forward to, the unjust actions of governments and organizations before us have stolen the futures of many–especially indigenous people in Canada. This is not ancient history, and it is vital that we recognize that. This is 40, 50 years ago. And this is now. As we come into our own as adults,it is our responsibility to work to ensure that the society we leave behind many years from now is one of equality, opportunity, and justice for all people. We cannot rewrite our past, but we mustn’t dare lead our lives without working to better the future. In the words of Socrates: The secret of change is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new. We have not made it to this point in our lives on our own. To the friends and family who lifted us when we were down and supported us when we rose shakily, we thank you. To the educators and mentors who helped shape who we are today–who awarded us the privilege of writing them into our own stories- we thank you. To those who
have not yet finished their high school journey, high school could very well be a time in your life you remember fondly, or it could fade into insignificance. No matter how this adventure looks for you, promise yourself that you will lead with authenticity. Spread love and kindness. To hate is an easy thing, but to love takes strength all have but not all are willing to practice (Rupi Kaur) Embrace change. Allow yourself to be known. Take risks. Create the art that moves you. Play the music that resonates deep within you. Act in the plays that touch you. Dance to the songs that inspire you. Shoot the films that represent you. But don’t you dare waste a second being anybody else. In tenth grade, English Mr.Badgero–if you’re out there Badgero, we’re still your biggest fans–he had us study The Perks of Being a Wallflower. A quote which resonates with me reads: “I guess we are who we are for a lot of reasons and maybe we’ll never know most of them but even if we don't have the power to choose where we come from, we can still choose where we go from there”. My friends, I know this part is scary. The part where we branch out and begin taking risks and leaving our comfort zones. We don’t know what is to come, but uncertainty is synonymous with opportunity. We are going to grow more than we expect. We must hold fast to those we cherish. Hold fast to our dreams. Walk with sureness and have integrity. I encourage you to put yourselves out there. Form relationships of all kinds. Practice gratitude. No one shall ever force us to become the version of ourselves that we long to be, but we all hold the power to become them. Don’t doubt what you have to offer this world. Trust your story. I’d like to finish off today with a poem written by Rupi Kaur, a favourite of mine: ”There are mountains growing beneath our feet that cannot be contained. All we’ve endured has prepared us for this. Bring your hammers and fists, we have a glass ceiling to shatter.” Congratulations to my exceptional peers. On behalf of the KSA Grad Class of 2021, thank you.
Congratulations

SOUTH KAMLOOPS SECONDARY SCHOOL
ABORIGINAL VALEDICTORIAN SPEECH Avi Suttill
G
ood day respected guests, elders, teachers, mentors, family, and the Graduating class of 2021. My name is Aveline Suttill, I am Métis and my family originated from the Red River Valley in Manitoba. I would like to start off by thanking my teachers, the Aboriginal education workers, the Graduation Committee and the graduating class for allowing me to represent them, as it is a great honour to be here. As the Aboriginal Valedictorian I would like to express my gratitude for being here today celebrating our heritage. As you all may know, this past year has been quite different compared to all of our previous graduations (except last year) with all the sudden changes. I would like to acknowledge that all of us have taken on a huge challenge, and through our innovation and perseverance, we were able to adapt to these adverse changes. We have worked as individuals, doing our part so we could come back to school, continue our education, and be successful as a group. There has been so much support from all of our mentors that has helped us get to this point. We all have finished a major chapter in our lives and are now moving onto our next. We all have worked so hard to get here. Now, we are becoming young adults, and I believe that our generation of graduates will help change our future for the better, as I have seen integrity and commitment shown within us throughout the past five years. Our group has come through a time where there is an incredible amount of information being fed to us through social media.
what is thrown at us we create headlines and change district level codes, despite the cancellation of athletics we endure and stay physically active. Despite the quarter system, despite the lack of social activity, we have created memories upon memories of what we have done here. Thank you all for watching and more importantly thank you for experiencing these five years with us. The grad class of 2021 experienced a senior year that is incomparable to any other. We have taken on leadership positions within this school and we have proved that the younger generation does have the power to make a difference, not just within the school but also in our larger community. We have discussed and raised awareness for plenty of different issues and topics present in the real world. We have even addressed the dress code, the results of which will be felt throughout our entire community. I want everybody in our class to hear that they should be proud of their diploma. That’s our graduating ticket, that’s it, the slip we get for 12 years of commitment. It’s a little strange, sure, that this mighty Dogwood slip of paper gives us value but we have to remember what it represents. It proves we have a crucial set of skills; being able to demonstrate; multitasking, time management, oratory, and tactile performance skills but it also shows our determination and grit to push those last two senior years. After all, it doesn’t take rocket appliances to get your grade 10. It does, however, take just about everything we need to build a future to get your grade 12. One of the things we should be proudest of is our ability to be able to connect SOUTH KAMLOOPS SECONDARY with people who have different interests SCHOOL VALEDICTORIAN SPEECH than us. We should now have the tools to be able to distinguish fact from fiction, so we can make wise decisions that guide us in the right direction. We all are unique and different in many ways, some of us may have felt like we didn’t fit in or belong. I hope as we all move forward, we will find our special place where we feel valued and respected. And the relationships we’ve made, will continue to grow and carry us forward. Our grad class will be remembered for our quick ability to adapt to changes, and how we were able to make the best of our graduation year with the limited opportunities we were given. I would like to commend every single one of the graduating students for pushing through all challenges big and small. And I hope that we are able to utilize all of the things that we have learned through our years of education as a stepping stone to achieve greater things within our future. Thank you, Kukwstsétsemc and good health.
B
Stories are what define us. My experience seeing a mathematical supergenius snipe a bird out of the sky is what differentiates me from the next person, who may have experienced a tragic day where the world lost a seagull. My experience throughout these five years separates me from you but it also unifies us. We have all seen countless Christmas plays and talent shows, countless touchdowns, dunks and spikes. Countless days where without our realization we were developing physically and as people. We strived to become someone, to build something. I believe that we achieved that. We have all built something that’s the first step. Now it’s up to us to continue and build something worthwhile. High school was never about learning how to find “x” or learning what the powerhouse of the cell was. High school is about discovering the things we love and the things we don’t. All of this comes with the added benefit of friendships that have the potential to last an entire lifetime. The time we have all spent together is greatly significant. We have spent five years of our lives together. Five days a week for 195 weeks; that’s a total of 975 days together. Throughout all of that We have managed to influence each other in ways that make us constantly strive to better ourselves. There is not one single person that makes the grad class of 2021 great. Our greatness comes from stories, from experiences and from collaboration. The greatness of the grad class of 2021 comes from our togetherness. All of our experiences we’ve lived through, all of the stories we’ve shared and all of the knowledge we’ve gained contribute to our ability to walk into the “real world” with an aura of confidence. We would like to thank everyone for helping us get to the point where we are now. To all of the custodians for all of their hard work keeping everything sanitary in the midst of a global pandemic and to all the staff members for guiding us throughout our journey here at South Kam To our parents for creating, feeding and driving us forward. And a special thankyou to the wonderful ladies in the First Nations room for feeding so many of us for so long. Thank you for listening and with that we would like to welcome and congratulate the graduating class of 2021 for making to the real world.

2020/21 GRADUATING CLASS
WESTSYDE SECONDARY SCHOOL ly, to look up and climb whenever life puts you between a rock and a hard place. Thank you to our Certified Education Assistants and to our Aboriginal Education Worker for always being there to support us. Thank you to our school custodians who have worked so hard to keep our school safe and clean. I would also like to thank the office staff for their countless efforts to make Westsyde Secondary School a safe and welcoming place for all. To the administration, thank you for supporting us during the tough times. The grad class would like to extend a special thank you to former Vice Principal Mr. Devries, who was our biggest advocate. He was the older brother we never had but always needed to keep us in check. You will never know how much you meant to us. To our parents, family members, and WESTSYDE SECONDARY SCHOOL friends, thank you for being our biggest supporters, our biggest shoulders to lean on, VALEDICTORIAN SPEECH and most importantly, thank you for showBy Mackenzie Bellows ing us that regardless of our choices, you’ll ood morning parents, family mem- always be there. Thank you for never giving up on us and pushing us to do our very best! bers, friends, Westsyde Secondary It’s crazy to think that our last five years staff, and the graduating class of at Westsyde Secondary have flown by this 2021. My name is Mackenzie Bellows and quickly. It feels like just yesterday we were I am the valedictorian of the grad class entering the gym doors, scared, short, naive of 2021. I would like to acknowledge that children. I remember walking in Jock Hall we are on the unceded territory of the Secwepemc Nation, specifically the territory scared to glance up and provoke the Grade 12s because they were so big, and now we of the Tk’emlúps te Secwepemc People. I want to thank the people of the territory for are the Grade 12s. Grade 8 initiation will forever haunt my memories, but now I look allowing us to gather here together to witback and laugh with fond memories and ness the hard work of each and every sturespect. The amount of memories is endless: dent of the graduating class of 2021. I stand here before you, looking back on dancing our socks off, participating in pep the legacy that we have all created together rallies, enjoying a game of football at Friday Night Lights, or simply walking through the over the last five years. I would like to take a moment and thank my fellow classmates raging cafeteria at lunch hours. Remember for allowing me to have the great honour of that time those kids from another school came and set off a smoke bomb in the caferepresenting our graduating class. I never thought I would be the one voted to repre- teria or when someone pulled the fire alarm sent our grad class. I feel very privileged to and we all had to go outside and freeze. We have come so far, and we have matured so speak on your behalf, and I hope to serve much over the years. We can conquer anyyou all well in this role. thing we put our minds to. Together let’s On behalf of the graduating class of conquer the world! A special congratula2021, we would like to share our gratitude tions goes out to all Westsyde students. It with all of the people that have supported has taken us five years but we are finally us over our last 13 years of school. Thank allowed to wear hats! you to our amazing teachers and counselTo the graduating class of 2021, we lors for always encouraging us to do our best, to never give up, and most important- were born during an epidemic (SARS), and
G
now we are graduating during a pandemic (COVID). Covid does not define us as a whole, as you are only as great as you let yourself be. We have overcome many difficulties over the years. Our entire class was labelled as challenging back in Grade 8, but now we will take that vibe and use it to take on the world. What was thought to be our weakness was really our greatest strength! There is a quote by Martin Luther King Junior that describes the challenges high school students may have. It talks about how to move forward through all those challenges that we have all thought were impossible to get through. “If you can’t fly, then run, if you can’t run, then walk, if you can’t walk, then crawl, but whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.” Look how far we have all come. Our hard work has finally paid off. We have worked through any problem that has come our way, and we have prevailed. Now, we are beginning the next step of our lives as young adults. We may still be afraid or naive about what the future may bring, but now we know we can do anything we put our minds to and do it well. You may look back at the last five years and think-- thank goodness it’s over, or wow that was stressful, or I wish our time here wasn’t over. Regardless of the myriad of emotions we may be feeling now, together we pushed through it. We pushed through it all. We made it through the first day of Grade 8, we made it to the end of high school. Graduates of 2021, all we can do now is move forward. There’s going to be bumps along the way, quick turns, and maybe a pothole here and there, but whatever you do, don’t give up. Follow your dreams, never give up, and most importantly, when life throws you a curveball, take it with great appreciation. It is these curveballs that can teach us life’s greatest lessons. We are all about to embark on a new journey. Take advantage of all opportunities, travel, work, and appreciate the little moments life has to offer. Live your life, love who you want to love, be who you want to be, and most of all,
live with no regrets. Always remember graduates to be kind, courageous, and thoughtful. Now we have grown into amazing, resilient, adults ready to take on the world. Grads’ lives will get hard, it’s bound to happen. There is a quote by Queen Elizabeth II, that reminds us to never give up, when things get tough, keep pushing through: “When life seems hard, the courageous do not lie down and accept defeat; instead, they are all the more determined to struggle for a better future.” Always remember there is a light at the end of the tunnel. This may not be the graduation we all wanted it to be, but I am grateful to be standing here with you all today despite what that may look like; however, life isn’t always everything we want it to be either. Sometimes, we have to stop and appreciate the accomplishments we have currently completed, and we have now completed high school. Not all of us thought we would be standing here, let alone graduating. This is one accomplishment of many to come. We have completed 13 years of schooling. I know that I personally am proud of everyone in the class for pushing through over the years to get to where they are today. I am proud to say that I am a fellow Westsyde Secondary graduate and all of you should be too! This is the first of many milestones to come as we embark on this epic journey known as life. A piece of advice to the future grads, don’t rush it. Before you know it, high school will soon be over, and you will be an adult. Embrace being a kid, get to know as many people as you can, and work to strengthen our Westsyde community. If high school has taught me anything, it is that no matter what, look for a positive amongst the negative. Finally, never accept defeat. When things get tough don’t give up. Instead, strive for something better. If you do get knocked down, remember this too shall pass. Lastly, a final message to the grads that are wigging out about not being able to make something of themselves. Have faith in yourself and always remember,“If society can make penicillin out of moldy bread, it can surely make something out of you.” Congratulations Westsyde graduates of 2021!
