Hot Nite’s Silver Anniversary Hot Nite in the City, the oldest downtown classic vehicle show in the province, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year — a silver anniversary to match the steel and chrome prevalent at the event. Ron Popove, chairman and organizer for Hot Nite in the City, has been helping to bring the event to Kamloops for 19 years of those 25 years. “Nobody wants the job,” he quipped about his longevity. Hot Nite in the City is a static vehicle display that features everything from cars to pickups and motorcycles to transport trucks. It was started in 1994 by the Kamloops chapter of the Vintage Car Club of Canada. “We even have boats this year,” Popove said. Hot Nite stretches along Victoria Street from First Avenue to Sixth Avenue. The event will from run Aug. 9 to Aug. 11 alongside the popular Ribfest festival in Riverside Park, making that weekend in August a huge draw for locals and visitors. (Hot Note features a Friday night poker run for participants, with the Saturday show and shine the main attraction. Sunday will see vehicles displayed in Riverside Park in the Ribs and Rods event.) Music and entertainment will be featured on Saturday along the sixblock strip that hosts Hot Note. There will be a main stage at Victoria Street and Fourth Avenue and DJs at Victoria Street and First Avenue and Victoria Street and Fifth Avenue. New this year is a salmon barbecue competition in the Plaza Hotel parking lot, at Victoria and Fourth, with a halfdozen competitors already signed up to participate. Hot Nite registration numbers are strong, with 300 cars already signed

up for the event. People can sign up right until the morning of the event, so those numbers are likely to climb. Popove said participants hail from Kamloops, across Canada and the U.S. Hot Nite in the City is clearly a big event for car collectors and aficionados. “I had a guy tell me the other day, if you’re going to do one car show in the summer, you have to go to Kamloops,” Popove said. “A remark like that makes you feel good.” Popove recommends attendees leave their dogs at home and be conscious of the displays while avoiding bumping or scratching the valuable vehicles. He also suggests talking to the owners of the vehicles. “Every car has a story,” he said. Hot Nite in the City has grown substantially since its start in 1994. Originally held on a Thursday night, the show took up only two blocks of Victoria Street. After moving the event to the weekend, which allowed for more involvement from people outside Kamloops, Hot Nite grew, reaching a high as 546 vehicles for a single show. Popove praised everyone who works behind the scenes to organize Hot Nite, from the many volunteers, to the city’s help with bylaw officers and trash collection, to the Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association’s involvement. “Everybody has their little job and they do it very well,” he said. 1963 Mercury Meteor Owner: Blaine Falat

The story of my Mercury Meteor began when a customer came into my autobody shop in 2012. He came in to inquire about having a 1967 Chevelle painted and he asked me if I would be interested in a trade for a 1963 Mercury Meteor. I had never seen one before, so I asked him to send some photos of it. After seeing it in person, I agreed to the trade. For the next four years, the Meteor sat in the back of my shop as I decided exactly how I wanted to proceed. In November of 2016, we started a rotisserie restoration of the car, completely tearing it down and rebuilding it, turning it into a pro touring vehicle. In July of 2018, I put it back on the road and have accumulated around 2,800 miles on it so far. The fact that it’s a 1963 Mercury Meteor makes it even more special to me as it was the year I was born.

1974 GTO Owners: Don McKay

In 1974, I was looking for a GTO and couldn’t find a 1968 or 1969 model anywhere. I started looking at owning a new one and, after several stops at dealerships, I happened to be going past Town and Country Pontiac in Langley and saw a 1974 GTO coming off the car carrier and stopped to look. I inquired and was told it first had to go through pre-delivery inspection. After three more visits in the following weeks, the car was in the showroom. I talked to them, they took it out and we went for a test ride. Within a week, I owned it and still do to this day. The car had an optional tent that was out of stock and, a few years later, I found one in Portland and bought it.

music, of course — almost every weekend. They moved to Kamloops in early 19902 and he passed away shortly after. Grandma kept the car in the garage on the North Shore, where she lived for another 10 years. She never drove it as she did not have a licence, but kept it fully insured and had winters rotated winter and summer and serviced. When I asked her why she spent all that money on a car she never drove, she said: “You never know when ya might have to leave town!” To which I replied: “But you have no licence.” And her reply: “I can hire a man!: She passed away about 10 years ago, at the age of 94, and I bought the car from her estate. It’s a great cruising car and Sherry and I have enjoyed it from the first day we got it.

Tesla Model S 85D Owner: Tony Muller

In April 2015, we took delivery of our red Tesla Model S 85D. We have travelled 134,093 kilometres and used a total of 26,170.7 kWh of electricity for an average of 19.51 kWh/100km. This average fluctuates between summer and winter driving, from 16.31kWh/100 km to 26.9 kWh/100 km, respectively. Most of our driving has been done while charging at home and only one-third has been from Tesla super charging. Using tier 2 BC Hydro rates, we would have spent $1,956.95 on electricity or $0.015/km, but because of our solar panels generating nearly 80 per cent of our electrical needs at home, our cost is much less, closer to $0.003/km. In addition, we have not added any CO2 to the atmosphere in all our travels. For those of you already converted, you will know and understand this. Range anxiety lasted for as long as our first extended trip and, since then, we have been more anxious when driving gas-powered rental cars than in the Tesla. We have met many new friends along the road at charging stations with the same goals and have not been restricted in where we travel. Over the air updates have given the

dash a completely new look with driving enhancements. The Tesla charges overnight and, in the morning, we can travel for most of the day without thinking about charging. The cruise and lane control make for better driving as it maintains a safe distance from the car ahead and speed increases are only permitted based on the road signs. It is quiet and clean. On long trips, the car is often charged and ready to go long before we are. The acceleration and euphoria of driving a Tesla has only intensified during this time. It is the best and safest car we have ever driven. Wait no longer if you have ever thought of switching to an electric vehicle.

1955 Snub Nose Owner: Darren Hoffman

This is a dream that came to life. What was once a 1955 Snub Nose cab over two-tonne workhorse has now been transformed. It was not an easy task and included a lot of blood, sweat and tears to turn this workhorse into a unique and radical ride. The truck was purchased with some of the custom work started. The cab was modified from a five-tonne to a half-tonne to fit a cameo bed and custom tubs and wheel wells were closed in to fit massive 33 x 22.5 Hoosier tires, Morrison back half chassis with Mustang II front end, all on Ride Tech air-management system, nineinch Ford rear end with Currie axles, custom suicide doors and a custom firewall and engine compartment that houses a Gibs Racing 409 stroked to 472, giving this wild ride 510 ft lbs. of torque. But the truck was still far from finished. Making a long trek from the U.S. East Coast, the Tug Boat has now made its home in Nanaimo. With well over 3,500 hours and grateful help of family, the customizing continued. The countless body modifications by Nolan Hoffman and Mark Hoffman turned this beast into a beauty: customizing the cameo bed walls to fit snug into the cab, custommade visor, many custom fabrications to the bed for a sleeker look, custom touches to the door jambs and engine compartment, air ride gauges fabricated into the bench seat and hours of body work and sanding. The final touches have made this vision a reality. Custom House of Kolors Paint done by Procraft Restoration in Duncan gives this truck show quality and a finish that is so deep it looks like you can dip your fingers in. The beautiful custom interior by Geoff Horsfall of Duncan provides a stunningly simple and warm feel using

Italian leather with perforation accents. Lastly, the 16 coats of clear on the African mahogany wood finishes the exterior of this truck, unveiling an amazing richness and depth. After almost two years of hard work, this unique, one of a kind ride is finally being enjoyed. Harley-Davidson Owner: Bob Stokes

I have owned bikes most of my life and got my first Harley in 2004. I found my current bike in Calgary in 2016 and I have replaced pretty much the whole bike after promising my wife I wouldn’t get too carried away. We went from a nostalgic look to the custom appearance we have today. In 2017, we drove from northeast Alberta to Sturgis, S.D., and across Washington state and up to Kamloops. It was probably the nicest ride that we have done as a couple. I highly recommend it. Last year, we rode out to Kamloops for Hot Night and, although the event was awesome, the weather and the bike didn’t co-operate for a few days of the ride. We had came in through Kelowna and decided to to stop and eat. After eating, we were to carry on to Kamloops, but the bike had different ideas. The ignition switch decided it had had enough and refused to release. We called the local Harley dealer. They towed the bike to their shop and replaced the ignition the next morning — and we were again on our way north. We are looking forward to the 25th anniversary event this year. Last year, we met so many people and enjoyed visiting with them all. Let’s hope for a nice, sunny day!

2019 Peterbilt 389L logging truck

Owners: Chester(Nacho) DeRaspe JF Logging Ltd., Prince George

My Peterbilt truck has a Cummins X15 engine with 605 hp, 2050 Torque and tri-drive. It spent two months In Peterbilt’s Pacific Prince George Body shop getting all the custom work done to it. It has eight-inch monster stacks. All the dpf and forward fuel tanks needed to be moved ahead to make room for the exhaust, then to accommodate the big 445-inch front steer tires. We widened the front fenders and this was a one-off touch that I don’t think has been done before. There’s so many other neat things we did to it, like adding hardwood floors to the inside. It’s a pretty damn nice rig and turns heads. It’s also blown up all over social media (Instagram: @jfl1000nacho). I even received an invitation to the Peterbilt Denton Texas show in October. They allow only 50 trucks in North America to go to the show, so that will be an exciting road trip.

1965 Mustang Owners: Kaz Carson

Kaz has always been into cars. From Matchbox to RC cars, he could be found repairing and building anything on wheels. We decided a project car was needed to help pass down knowledge from his Grandpa, who is also a car hound and was a mechanic by trade. When Kaz was 12, we purchased a 1965 Mustang. After a summer of stripping that car, we realized it wasn’t worth continuing. We purchased another Mustang and started again. Kaz and our trusty body expert, Vic, have put in many many hours building and customizing the body. Our original goal was for Kaz to drive it to his graduation, which was last year. Our new goal is Hot Nite in the City.

The lessons Kaz has learned from this are many, but the most important was patience. As any car enthusiast will attest, patience is mandatory when restoring a vintage car. Wish us well and see you at the show!

1970 Pontiac GTO Judge Owners: George and Terry Bockel Milwaukie, Ore.

We have owned our car for more than 20 years. Before we had our GTO, we had no interest in muscle cars. We were boaters. Our son got a 1972 Lemans when he was 16. It was a fast 455 and he wanted to race. His dad had never been to the drags in his life. George was hooked on the way through the parking lot. He loved the sound and the burning rubber, but mostly the sound. He was shaking with excitement. That was in May and, by the end of June, we had our Judge. The engine was shot, but George didn’t care. My husband wanted that car. I think it was pure luck the car was Orbit Orange. It was not the original colour, but in my opinion, the best Judge colour. We joined our local GTO club (of which our son was already a member), the Goat Herd GTO Club of Oregon and started having a lot of fun with this car. Our car is not a numbers-matching vehicle, but it is a documented Judge. Over time, it has had cheap body and paint work when we had kids at home. It had major body work and good paint after they moved out. We learned it had been wrecked at least twice and had major hidden damage, but that’s a whole other story. The boat got sold as we only wanted one expensive hobby at a time. In our early days of ownership, it did its share of drag racing at the local tracks and ran a respectable 13.81 in the quartermile. The Judge has had its engine redone a couple of times and now sports a 400 engine with a 455 crank. It’s a 400 turbo automatic and was faster at the track that way, so we opted out of converting to a stick. It also has no air conditioning for the same reason — it would have weighed more. It now has a three-inch exhaust and

custom 17-inch Rally ll wheels. The Judge package came with a wing and a hood tack, both of which make it stand out a little more. The striping on the side, called eyebrows, is fluorescent in the dark and is a fun item Pontiac added to the Judge package. We have put a lot of miles on this car, going to shows that require some time to get there. That is what we like to do best. We have friends doing the same thing, so away we go. We have been to the Hot Nite in the City twice and it’s one of our favourite destinations. When we found out it was the 25th anniversary show, there was no question we were coming back to Kamloops. We can’t wait to see our friends and the cars and trucks on Victoria Street.
