A message from The Boss Popove Over the years, we have grown from a one-cityblock evening event to a Friday night Poker Run and 13-block Saturday show and shine. On Sunday morning, we have a mini-show to support the annual Ribfest. This year, there will be vehicles coming from Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario and all corners of our beautiful British Columbia. Once again, the entries will consist of street rods, muscle car and tuners, to mention a few. It’s important to remember that every vehicle has a story, so don’t forget to talk to the owners and find out where they acquired their toy or how long it’s been in their family. Our wonderful sponsors are a reason why we can all enjoy spending the day admiring these gorgeous cars and trucks, so stop by their booths and see what they have to offer. Thank you to the participants and sponsors who attend our event, making it a huge success. We would also like to send out a special thank you to the City of Kamloops and the Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association. We greatly appreciate all the spectators who come down to enjoy the event. We wish to remind them to be aware of the time, sweat and finances that go into these vehicles. Please be careful when admiring them. I would like to say a huge thank you to the organizing committee and all the behind the scenes staff. These are the people who bring this event together. Also, thank you to my family for their patience and understanding. Enjoy the show!

Making a point
with Pink Dave Miller’s pink flat deck truck surely turns a few heads when it is driven down the street, making it the perfect vehicle to get the father of eight’s message across. The 47-year-old took the shock of a lung-disease diagnosis and turned it into a way to spend more time with his family and raise awareness when he and his step-sons rebuilt his customized family truck. Miller has worked in the auto industry his whole life, doing everything form body work to mechanical, and the truck has been rebuilt twice. “It used to be my old Chevy Blazer and then we bought a pickup body and we stripped both trucks down and merged all the one together,” Miller said. The truck was given new purpose as a vehicle for cancer awareness this spring when Miller’s family rebuilt it a second time after he received earthshattering news last fall that he had pulmonary fibrosis, a chronic and progressive lung disease where the air sac in the lungs becomes scarred
and stiff, making it difficult to breathe and get enough oxygen into the bloodstream. It can lead to an increased lung cancer risk. “I actually had a heart attack in October and that’s when we found out about the prognosis,” Miller said. He said he felt shell-shocked, overwhelmed and scared when he heard the news. It wasn’t until Christmas and the comfort of being with family during the holiday season that the shock finally wore off and Miller realized he needed to do something with his loved ones to preserve that feeling. He also wanted to spread the knowledge that there are people out there who struggle with life-altering diseases every day. From there, the family converted the truck to a flat deck and painted it pink to raise awareness of cancer — a disease Miller is all too familiar with, having lost an aunt and uncle to the same disease he has and his mother to Hodgkin’s disease. In January, Miller and his two step-
—6—
(Family photo left to right) Dave Miller’s step children Austin, Maddicyn and Jayden (on the flat deck) his wife Angle and Dave Miller (far right)
sons stripped the truck down and built it back up over the course of three months. It’s been back on the road ever since. “It was a very hard build because it was so much heart and soul behind it,” said Miller, noting the truck was dedicated to his mom this past Mother’s Day. He and his wife have eight kids between them from multiple marriages and everyone has put in their fair share of elbow grease into the truck over the years. But Miller’s two stepsons — Jayden, 18, and Austin,16, who have autism — completed the majority of the work. Neither one had touched a wrench a day in their life and hadn’t worked together as a team until this project. Each day, Miller would write down a list of what had to be done and they would check it all off one by one as they worked together, completing the majority of the rebuild for their dad three months to the day they started. “People that say autistic kids can’t achieve goals. They’re full of crap because the goal is sitting out in the driveway,” Miller said.
Miller can’t work given his condition and lives on disability as the family tries copes with the ordeal. He said the disease can be fatal and doctors have told him there’s not much they can do for him at this point, so he tries to just take life one day at a time. “It’s been a long haul,” he said. On the good days, he gets things done, noting the truck, which has been up and running for about a month, was on display at the Kamloops Street Road Association’s Chrome on the Grass car show in July and will be on tour throughout the month of August. “It’s pretty cool to see that it’s still alive and kicking going around town,” Miller said. He’s also been collecting signatures of musicians, collecting the John Hancocks of Me and Mae, Gord Bamford, Jason Benoit and Ben Klick. “I’m trying to get as many musicians to sign it as part of the awareness,” Miller said. “They’re jumping at the chance.” Miller said he likes the idea of possibly auctioning off the truck to raise money for cancer awareness.

There’s millions of dollars falling off those ribs
Residents and tourists alike have a major appetite for ribs. A study on Ribfest — the carnivorous cook-off held each summer in Riverside Park — shows the event’s total economic impact since it began in 2012 is more than $23 million. “You guys are getting a lot of reports — guarantee you this is the sauciest one that you’ll see today,” RibFest sponsorship lead Colin O’Leary told Kamloops council on Tuesday. DayBreak Rotary conducted the study as its charity event wrapped up its sixth year in 2017. Nearly 3,000 unique orders were tracked and more than 340 surveys were conducted. The study found the event’s direct economic impact in Kamloops in 2017 was between $2.7 and $2.9 million, with a total
economic impact on the province estimated at between $4 million and $6 million. Ribfest saw between 52,000 and 55,000 total visitors in 2017, compared to 60,000 in 2016. Survey feedback revealed each person visited on average about 1.5 times. Average group expenditure was $381. Heavy smoke from Interior wildfires, which plagued the city for most of the summer, may have impacted attendance, though the study did not address that aspect. Ribfest proceeded last summer despite smoky conditions that led to one act pulling out of the entertainment lineup and cancellation of the Kamloops Dragon Boat Festival, which usually runs simultaneously in Riverside Park. The study also found 26 to 28 per
—8—
cent of RibFest attendees were from out of town, with nearly half coming to Kamloops specifically for the event. “We actually draw people in from the entire region from around Kamloops,” O’Leary said. Most attendees were families or groups of friends, usually three or four people, the study showed, and overall satisfaction was rated as “high.” While councillors lauded the marquee event for Kamloops, some wondered how it can sustain itself going forward, having become the largest event of its kind in Western Canada. RibFest event chair Danica Wilkinson said Daybreak Rotary has been working since the first year to create a sustainable event, which is modelled after a similar event in Burlington, Ont. that is the
largest event of its kind in the country. “Through them and through the partnership we’ve built with them, they have a sustainable model that has kept RibFest going for over 20 years,” Wilkinson said. “We’re working with them closely to get to that point and not to burn out our volunteers.” This year’s event returns to Riverside Park from Aug. 10 to Aug. 12. New this year will be a tap takeover event on Aug. 12, featuring local breweries. Also featured will be a family fun zone and three days of music, culminating each night with tribute bands: Tragically Hip on Aug. 10, The Eagles on Aug. 11 and The Beatles on Aug. 12. More information on Ribfest can be found online at kamloopsribfest.com.

1932 FORD COUPE OWNER: DON HAWKER
The Golden Deuce started life in 2007 as a Coast to Coast Kit made in Quebec. After four years of collecting the necessary parts, assembly began in early 2011 and was completed in September 2012. Parts were sourced from the western U.S., B.C. and Alberta. The upholstery was done by Capricorn Upholstery in Vernon. The 15-coat paint job was done by Gord Aho of East End Auto Body in Revelstoke.
The power is a 383 Chevy Stroker with many internal and external additions. The transmission is a 700 R4 connected to a Ford 9 inch with 3:73 posi trac gears. Many thanks to John Jr. and John Sr. Scarcelli for their many hours of help with the build.
1932 ROADSTER
OWNER: JACK ANDERSON
I have been interested in muscle cars for several years. This year, I started to form an interest in 1950s-era hot rods. So I sold my 1969 Camaro and bought a 1932 Ford Roadster, a high boy-style open-wheel car. It has a Ford power train installed, a fivelitre (302 cid ) with a four-speed automatic overdrive transmission that came out a mid1990s Mustang GT. It also has a nice custom chassis, Wilwood
four-piston calipers on the front and four link 8,8 Ford differential with 3:55 positrac in the rear. In the custom interior, it has classic instrument gauges and a 1937 Ford steering wheel and column. All in all, it’s not like driving a Cadillac, but it is a real gas to take to the road.

1934 CHEVROLET MASTER SEDAN OWNERS : JIM AND DIANE DAVIES
When I retired, I told my wife I wanted to spend $30,000 to build a $20,000 hot rod. She said OK if it got me out of the house. I purchased the car seven years ago. It was a rusty body sitting on the original frame. It has no engine, nor wheels, and all the wood in the floor and roof was rotted out. It even had the required bullet holes. The car could not be restored to original, but I wanted the outside to look as original as possible. I spent two years collecting parts, which is hard to do as Chev parts (bumpers, grill, gas tank, radiator, lights and body parts) are not as easy to find as they are for 1934 Fords. First, the wood was removed and replaced with steel. For safety, I fabricated a hidden roll cage with seatbelt supports, placed steel side-impact bars in the doors and welded in the roof. Then the original frame was sandblasted and reinforced by boxing (welding plates on the inside the frame). Then came the difficult task of fitting the body on the frame, putting in a V8 engine where the original six-cylinder used to be and leaving room for steering, brake and clutch pedals and exhaust pipes. I now fully appreciate the engineering that goes into modern cars. After putting the body on and off about 40 or 50 times, I finally got everything to fit with at least a half-inch to spare. Of course, the next step was to take everything apart again. The frame was painted with POR 15 (black rust paint) and the body was prepped for paint. Putting up plastic and fans served as a makeshift paint booth. As the car was meant to be a driver and not
a show car, I was reluctant to spend a lot of money on a professional paint job. The decision was made easier as I was running out of money. The engine is a 350-cubic-inch Chev that is stroked and bored to 383 cubic inches. Then I put a 671 supercharger on top. A supercharger is a big air pump that pushes twice as much air in the engine as normal, so I needed two carburetors on top to supply twice as much fuel. The result is about 600 HP. I sure wasn’t thinking about fuel economy and high gas prices. The transmission is a M21, four-speed manual. The rear end is a nine-inch STRANGE engineering 3.5 ratio with 35 spline axles. This means it will never break (I hope). As a former drag racer, I am familiar with breaking things. I have a Lakewood explosion-proof bell housing protecting the centerforce clutch. I installed four-wheel power disc brakes. I had the time, skills and shop to build a car and set out to construct a true home-built hot rod. However, I needed the support of Lordco for engine and paint, Magnum Machine and Valley Speed for machine work, Knowles exhaust for Flowmaster mufflers and Versatile Upholstery for the interior panels, Southgate Radiator helped with the Southern Air heat and air conditioning. Friends were always available to help with advice and suggestions. A hot rod is finished when you run out of money.

1948 CHRYSLER WINDSOR OWNER: SCOTT WILLIAMS
This 1948 Chrysler Windsor two-door Coupe, built in Windsor, Ont., is a true survivor. With only 1,980 vehicles of this model built in 1948, there can’t be very many unrestored examples left. It has the original paint, bright work trim, chrome, glass, engine and fluid-drive transmission.
It runs very nice on the highway and still wears its first B.C. licence plate on the front bumper.
1965 MUSTANG
OWNER: ROBERT PICCOLO
I have owned this car since 2009, when I purchased it from the original family who lived in Powell River. The car was sold by City Motors Ltd. in Powell River on June 17, 1965. It had only 91,000 miles (146,000 kilometres) on it when I bought it. Everything was original on the car, including the engine, four-speed close ratio transmission and 3:50 1 ratio rear end. I completed a full restoration over three years, including all fenders and quarters, paint, drive train, suspension and a complete motor upgrade using all original OEM parts. The car when ordered was fully loaded with A code 225 HP, but was upgraded with the help of legendary engine builder Jack Mezzomo, who passed away in 2014. Jack converted the 225HP engine to a K Code 271 HP specifications.
Estimated HP is now over 320. He added solid lifter K Code cam, dual-point ignition, heads were ported/polished with 1.85 intake valves, steel/crank and connecting, K Code Harmonic Balance and 8K Rally Pak. It’s a very rare car with Red Pony deluxe interior, wood grain steering wheel and dash, style steel rims and dual red line tires. Raven Black paint with Red Interior makes it a great colour combination. This Mustang brings back the fun times, when cars were easy to own and drive, with very little electronic stuff to go wrong. The sound the 289 engine makes at 6,000 RPM will never be replaced by a Tesla. Restore them, don’t crush them!

1966 CORVAIR MONZA OWNERS: STEVE AND SUSAN BELL
Maybelline is a 1966 Corvair Monza convertible that gets a lot of attention. The last Corvair was assembled in April 1969 after a 10-year run that produced more than 1.8-million vehicles. Many younger people who see her at car shows are stunned to learn Chevrolet produced an air-cooled rear-engine automobile and many ask us if we placed the engine under the rear lid. Others recall fond memories of a relative who owned one and some relate stories of prior personal ownership many decades ago. Maybelline is a second-generation Corvair
(1965 to 1969) repainted in 1988 in the original mist blue when she then had 28,000 miles on her odometer after 22 years. The 30-year-old paint job has stood up well. A new top was installed that same year as the white factory top had yellowed. Thirty years later, she still has her original carpets and, with 52,000 miles in the past 52 years, the drive train has never been repaired.
1967 DODGE CORONET OWNERS: MICHAEL BULLIS
This Coronet can be seen among the classic cars amd trucks in downtown Kamloops on Aug. 11. Of special nots is the fact the Coronet sports a 419 Moose Squadron 75th Anniversary decal, which is appropriate given that the 419 out of Cold Lake, Alta. has a deep connection with Kamloops. Its Moose nickname is in honour of John “Moose” Fulton.

1969 CHEVELLE
OWNER: WAYNE ANTONIAK
My daughter Helen graduated from high school last summer and we knew she would have a hectic future ahead of her at UBC, so it seemed like an ideal time for the ultimate father-daughter road trip. We both love driving our 1969 Chevelle, so cruising for a couple of months around the continental United States was our Easy Rider (also 1969) moment. Memories and bonds were made that will last a lifetime for me — and for her, long after I’m gone. And that, as they say, is priceless. We left Vancouver and headed to Seattle to catch the interstates heading in an easterly direction. We discovered more local places, events and people by travelling that way. So it was over the Rockies, through the plains and the Dakotas to the Great Lakes. The original 396 engine had plenty of power for the task and a newer five-speed transmission made interstate speeds too easy. We checked out the Liberty Gears factory in Detroit. Imagine a place the size of an airplane hangar with a stars and stripes flag big as a drive-in movie screen up on a wall. There we picked up some custom parts they manufacture for the Tremec for fast and smooth shifting. When we got home, I installed the modified parts and they made a huge difference. Now that we were in the eastern states, we got away from the freeways as much as possible. Our next major stop was New York City, then down the Atlantic coast. By the time we got to South Carolina, our rear coil springs gave out from the heat and the tires were rubbing on the wheel wells. My aftermarket springs were softer for drag-racing traction and not really suited for cruising. Driving an American classic meant the good ol’ boys in Charleston had us back
on the road in about two hours with a new set of stock springs. I didn’t think they really needed to know that this All-American classic was made in Oshawa. Down to Miami for a Cuban sandwich, among other things, and west through the everglades to Tampa and along the coastal roads of the Gulf of Mexico into New Orleans, where we took a few days off to sightsee and eat. The Big Easy had great local seafood and desserts, like its famous beignets. After our indulgent three days of rest, we were on the road again to Galveston. At this point, the heat and humidity were intense. Oh, the Chevy was fine and never got hot, with no fear of her overheating. On the other hand, there was a great chance of the humans getting heat stroke, so we reluctantly turned on the air conditioning for the first time. The vintage air system worked like a charm and, combined with the five-speed gearbox, our baby was truly a go-anywhere resto-mod cruiser. Then it was on to our southernmost destination of Corpus Christi before heading north to San Antonio, Austin and Dallas. We then hit Tucson, Phoenix, Roswell, N.M., and Las Vegas. I managed to catch up with friends in Los Angeles before returning up the coast. At one local car show in Oregon, the owner of a pristine car on a trailer was astonished to hear we had been so far. He said, “Oh, so it’s only a driver.” To that I replied, “Yeah, doesn’t yours run?” I get a kick out of seeing the looks on faces when my daughter drives by with her “N” plates on the back. This car was meant to be driven — and that’s what we do.

1968 MUSTANG
OWNER: KEITH HUNTER My name is Brian Hunter and I’m writing on behalf of my dad, Keith Hunter. My dad has this car in our family for more than 40 years after he saved it from a salvage yard in Merritt. He slowly began working on bringing it back to life, gathering parts and pieces here and there until the early 1980s, when he had to put the project on hold to support his family. Fast-forward three decades, I’m 33 and my dad had his Mustang stored at my house. I was cleaning up around my yard and checked the car out and discovered the weather seal around the front window had
shrunk so much that there was a gap in the window that was letting water in. I called my dad that day and had a long discussion about letting me use his car in my wedding the next year. We got the car finished three days before my wedding and I took the car for its first test drive when I drove it up to Sun Peaks for my wedding. My dad finally got to slip behind the wheel of the car he saved from the crusher all those years ago.

This is a Japanese-market only SUV, specially built to run the world-famour Paris-Dakar rally. It is one of only 2,500 ever made and one of 1,000 in silver. There are probably fewer than five such vehicles in North America.
