AUDIT: $60K A YEAR FOR ONE DAY A WEEK Stories by Dale Bass STAFF REPORTER dale@kamloopsthisweek.com

Two provincial-government audits on agencies that share an executive director have raised financial concerns. The investigations into the Metis Commission of Children and Families of B.C. and the White Buffalo Aboriginal and Metis Health Society noted both agencies, headed by Deb Canada, each provided the government with “inaccurate quarterly reports” in the past due to the accounting practices each followed. The audits were conducted by the accounting firm Grant Thornton LLP. They began in May and KTW accessed them through freedom-of-information requests. Requests to speak with Stephanie Cadieux, the province’s minister for children and family development, were unsuccessful but, in an email

response, Cadieux said concerns and allegations brought to her ministry led to both audits, which she described as rarely required. The audit into White Buffalo also notes it was taken on because the Ministry of Children and Family development “has concerns regarding White Buffalo’s financial reporting, its capacity to effectively manage its allotted funding and its contracting practices.” In its document itemizing all payments made greater than $25,000, the Ministry of Finance notes White Buffalo received $409,328 from the province during the 2012-2013 fiscal year, which ended March 31. The Metis Commission received $586,440 in the same period. The White Buffalo audit notes Canada works one day a week at the agency and received a sal-

Boards of agencies dispute audit findings The boards of two agencies audited for the provincial government are disputing the results. However, the Ministry for Children and Family Development (MCFD), which commissioned the audits, is standing by the results. Deb Canada, executive director of the Metis Commission of Children and Families in B.C. and, until a month ago, in the same position with the White Buffalo Aboriginal and Metis Health Commission, said the documents submitted by the Grant Thornton LLP accounting firm have mistakes throughout. Canada, who is now a contractor with the White Buffalo agency, said the boards have told the provincial government the single auditor who looked at both groups confused and misunderstood information. Mistakes in the Metis Commission audit were noted and addressed by the board, Canada said, but those in the documents on White Buffalo were such that the group didn’t feel they could be addressed individually. MCFD minister Stephanie Cadieux, in an email to KTW, said there were some inaccuracies in preliminary versions of the audits, but corrections were made and noted. X See DEB CANADA A2

ary of $60,000 in 2012 for that work. In 2009, she was paid $57,000. In 2010, she was paid $60,000. In 2011, she was paid $59,000. As executive director of the Metis Commission, where she works four days a week, Canada’s salary was $134,000 in 2012. In the years previous, it was $90,000 in 2009, $104,000 in 2010 and $123,000 in 2011. The audits of both agencies note discussions about salaries and benefits for Canada were done largely by emails that included Canada. The White Buffalo audit reports staff are required to record their hours, but the executive director did not and auditors found “no means to determine her day-to-day activities, what vacation entitlements she had taken and/or were unused or as a means to audit expense requirements.”

5O% OFF ANTI-REFLECTION LENS

It also noted that, unlike other staff members, Canada’s expense reports lacked the same degree of detail and had no authorization for payment by a board member. The audit singled out a janitorial contract that was not put out for tender. Instead, it was awarded to a specific individual for $6,500 a year. The name of the recipient is redacted in the audit, but KTW has learned the contract went to a family member of one of the staff. The audit notes the contractor does not report to Canada directly, but to the finance officer to avoid any “conflict of interest.” Auditors said there remains a perceived conflict of interest and that, should the finance officer have issues with the service provided, the officer might have concerns about raising them “without fear of any personal repercussions.”

Both audits note the agencies lacked qualified financial officers in past years, but that both now have someone filling the jobs with the appropriate skill set. Both audits also recommend zero-based budgeting be followed, so staff in each can identify their minimum service levels and wish lists for funding and make it easier to justify expenditures. Both audits also recommend funding be continued to the two agencies for this fiscal year, expiring March 31, 2014. However, both agencies are required to have a new budget process implemented and approved by the ministry this month. It is also recommended the ministry review each agency’s budgets every three months. Both documents also recommend the ministry continue to work with the agencies.

COVER PAGE STORY

Deb Canada: ‘It’s all too political’ X From A1

“The ministry finds the recommendations and key findings accurate and they present valuable direction to move forward,” Cadieux wrote. Canada said James Blatchford, who signed the document on White Buffalo, also did the audit for the Metis Commission. That document, however, is signed simply with the company name, followed by a notation of Doug Steele, a partner in advisory services in the firm. Canada said an example of a mistake is her salary for 2012, noted in the Metis Commission audit as being $134,000. She said it was actually $108,000, of which $18,000 was put into a pension plan for her by the board. She said Blatchford was given her T4 income-tax slips as proof and she has no idea why the report includes a higher value. Salaries in recent years for her job at White Buffalo are also wrong, she said, as is the statement in the audit she works only one day a week there

— the other four at the commission — because board members told Blatchford Canada sends emails to them at night and on weekends and spends much more time on agency business than the one day a week. Cadieux’s email cites privacy laws precluding direct comment, but notes the ministry agrees with the audit’s recommendation that remuneration of staff be independently evaluated. Canada acknowledged a family member holds the janitorial contract and questioned why it was noted in the audit because she has no involvement in that position. “I didn’t hire him, I don’t supervise him and, if they fire him for any reason, I’m clear on my boundaries.” Canada believes she was the target of the audits and she suspects complaints were received by the ministry from people in Kamloops. “I work with both and in leadership roles in both agencies,” she said. “And there have been complaints. We asked them to tell us who so

we could do some problem-solving, but they won’t tell us. “It’s so overwhelming.” Canada noted work done by her husband on flooring at White Buffalo’s office was singled out in the audit. “But, they don’t mention another staff member’s husband did the carpeting and another staff member’s husband did the walls here.”

“He’s mixed everything up.” Canada said of Blatchford’s reports. “They [the provincial government] should have had two auditors.” Canada said the situation has left her thinking she will quit her job with the Metis Commission, stay as a contractor with White Buffalo and perhaps do some teaching. “It’s all too political at the provincial level,” she said.

Drunk driver gets two years for fatal crash

Pot project goes boom! Kamloops Mounties are contemplating possible charges after homemade marijuana alchemy caused an explosion at a house in Rayleigh on Tuesday, Oct. 15. Just before 6 p.m., emergency crews were called to a home in the 300-block of Stevens Drive for a reported explosion. Investigators have determined two youths and one adult were attempting to extract oil from marijuana clippings using butane when the gas accumulated and was sparked, causing an explosion that blew windows and frames off the house. Two of the occupants and one neighbour were treated at Royal Inland Hospital. The loud explosion got the attention and quick reaction of neighbour Graeme Russell, who said the home is always busy with people coming and going at all hours. “It’s always been a sketchy place.” Just after the explosion, which blew out the front living-room windows, Russell saw young men running from the burning home, looking very stunned. The young men got into a vehicle and took off from the scene. Russell is now caring for the homeowner’s dog until they return to the damaged house.

A Kamloops man who was driving drunk when he struck and killed a pedestrian on the T’kemlups Indian Band reserve last year will spend the next two years serving a federal prison sentence. Robert Bill was sentenced in B.C. Supreme Court on Wednesday, Oct. 16. Court heard the 32-year-old was in the middle of a two-day binge on July 20, 2012, following the stabbing death of one of his best friends, when he accidentally ran down 64-year-old David Seymour in the area of West Shuswap and Salish roads. Bill fled the scene and Seymour died of his injuries. In handing down his sentence, B.C. Supreme Court Justice Dev Dley said the fact Bill knew Seymour was in need of medical attention, but did not alert anyone to the situation is an aggravating factor. “A jail sentence is required to emphasize society’s outrage at crimes of this nature,” he said. Dley did acknowledge the fact Bill entered guilty pleas at an early stage as a mitigating factor. In a hearing last week, court heard Bill was mourning the loss of his friend, Jesse Seymour, who was stabbed to death on July 15, 2012, when he struck and killed David Seymour, Jesse’s cousin. In the months following the collision, Bill was banished from the TIB reserve — a place he had lived for 20 years. In addition to the two-year federal prison sentence, Dley also placed Bill on a three-year probation term with orders he stay away from bars and liquor stores and take counselling as directed by his probation officers. During a court hearing last week, Bill addressed the packed courtroom, which was filled with supporters of Bill and friends and family of Seymour. “I’m sorry and I can’t imagine the pain I’ve put you guys through,” Bill said. “It’s something I have to live with for the rest of my life. I feel like I owe you guys an apology.” • Meanwhile, Torbin Alec, accused of killing Jesse Seymour, is slated to stand trial later this month on a charge of second-degree murder. His trial will begin on Monday, Oct. 28.

PUMMELLING PINK FOR A GREAT CAUSE Sure, he thought it was weird to take a sledgehammer to a vehicle, but international exchange student Paul Sagemueller was game to try as staff at Kamloops Dodge in Valleyview hosted a fundraiser for breast-cancer research. The 17-year-old from Germany took a swing, exclaiming, “This is very strange!” and did his part, helping the dealership’s event. Beyond paying for a swing, the Saturday, Oct. 12, fundraiser included a barbecue, pink candy floss, an opportunity to meet TRU cheerleaders and a contest to win tickets to an upcoming Pink concert in Vancouver. One of his host parents, Katherine Richards, won the tickets and overnight accommodation. Dealership staff said the event, a first for them, was a fun day “beating the crap out of cancer.”

Strauss preps for global expansion By Andrea Klassen STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com

A year-and-a-half after securing approval from Health Canada, a natural-health product maker in Kamloops is about to broaden its horizons. Strauss Herb Company is set to ship its popular Strauss Heart Drops to Croatia for the first time this month and has approval to sell six of its herbal remedies in Italy, said company vicepresident Brian Kettle. By Christmas, Strauss hopes to have made inroads into an even larger market — China. “It changes the landscape for the company,” said Kettle, noting the company’s heart drops — which claim to promote heart health and reduce cholesterol — are already used by the ChineseCanadian community. “Some of our biggest customers are Chinese people because they understand traditional medicine,” he said. Kettle said a Chinese delegation is due to visit the company in Kamloops before Christmas and an import license will hopefully soon follow. “It’ll mean a lot more employment for people here in Kamloops,” he said. “We’ll hire a lot more people. We’ll probably run shift work. The Chinese market is so huge. An opening order to China would be probably in the $10-million to $12-million range — just an opening order.” Strauss now employs 15 people locally. On the home front, the company’s products are now listed with several major retailers, Kettle said, including Sobeys and Rexall.

That wasn’t the case two years ago, when the company was still without Health Canada’s stamp of approval. Strauss spent seven years pursuing a natural product number for its heart drops and was turned down several times by the regulator. It wasn’t until the company filed a lawsuit against the agency that Health Canada changed its mind and issued the number in 2012. Kettle said the product number has been a gamechanger for the company.

“Because we now have our natural product numbers in Canada, it gives great weight to get our approvals in other countries,” he said. “If it’s approved in Canada, Canada’s probably leading the world in qualifying countries for licensing. So, when another country looks at that, Canada throws a lot of weight behind it. “If it’s approved in Canada, it certainly has a very good chance of being approved in any other country that looks at it.”

Kettle said the company didn’t go ahead with legal action against Health Canada, preferring instead to focus on marketing its products. A lawsuit against the Kamloops Daily News, however, is ongoing. VATE That suit stems from a RENO ! NOW column published in the E T A newspaper that compared RENOV Strauss to 19th-century OW! N snake-oil salesmen. In a statement of claim filed in B.C. Supreme Court, the company describes the column as “false, malicious and defamatory.”

Pooler has the downtown spirit — and you should, too!

I

F GAY POOLER HAD TO pick one project for the downtown, it would be to create a public square. It would be awesome to see her take on that task, to see the downtown businesses get onside and create a public square that, unlike Spirit Square on the North Shore, actually has a reason to exist. It would be a place so busy that it would eliminate fears from businesses that a square would attract those my mother used to call riff-raff. It’s just one of the ideas the head of the Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association (KCBIA) brought back with her after taking part in an International Downtown Association conference earlier this month in New York City. The sessions brought together people like Pooler from around the world and, she said, she found it satisfying to learn Kamloops is doing pretty good with what appeared to be the No. 1 issue for delegates — a clean and safe downtown. It galvanized her resolve to pursue some changes, though, a main one being extension of the communityambassador program that sees downtown streets home to red-shirted young people. These ambassadors do everything — answer questions from tourists, hand out information and work with bylaws officers to deal with some of the marginalized folks who get a bit obnoxious. I’ve never understood why we offer this invaluable service to people in the summer, but forget about it during the rest of the year. People, including tourists, still head

DALE BASS Street

LEVEL downtown during the less-than-broiling hot months. We should be as welcoming then as we are in June, July and August. It would be nice to see something — be it city hall or a business — kick in the money to keep that program going. But, then, there is tourism with Uji to put taxpayer dollars into and promote. Oops. I digress. Pooler has a couple of spots identified in her mind that would make great public-square spaces. She also has programming ideas for them. Maybe it could involve expanding the wonderful Live at Lunch musical events that promote some of our local talent. Perhaps the square could be a great place to park the ambassadors in the off-season. Pooler is correct when she says it needs to be a happening place or it becomes little more than the cityowned Spirit Square, a pretty area hardly anyone uses — although rumour has it the new head of the North Shore Business Improvement Association isn’t as complacent as the city and plans to do what he can to see the space used more.

Pooler said her confidence was confirmed at the conference that the KCBIA has the bones to build on great local businesses run by our friends and neighbours. Places like the wonderful Pandora’s Costume Box — think Halloween get-ups, folks — to, at the other end of the downtown area, the wonderful Brownstone Restaurant. All along Victoria, Seymour and, to a lesser extent, Lansdowne streets are fantastic outlets with people committed to keeping the downtown alive and vibrant. Pooler said the KCBIA has a strong core of progressive thinkers, people who can see the vision and who are also willing to work toward it. One of the other challenges faced is bringing people along who are content with the status quo, who might not want to see a public square or anything beyond the annual sidewalk sales. It’s why Pooler plans to start small with some of the ideas she got from her time in New York. Excite the KCBIA marketing committee first. Get its members onside and then move out to the rest of the association. Get them to see the same future and then take it out onto the street. Build on recent survey results that show people who visit the downtown are blown away by how friendly total strangers can be, how helpful Kamloopsians are, how welcome the downtown makes them feel. We take it for granted, sometimes. We shouldn’t. People like Pooler spend every day doing what they can to make the area matter to us. And it should. dale@kamloopsthisweek.com

The federal government brought down its Speech from the Throne this week — and advance reports suggested it would focus on the best interests of Canadian consumers. This is clearly designed with the 2015 federal election in mind, but it is a much-needed focus all the same. Canadians pay far too much for basic items and, given that most of them are not getting much in the way of wage increases, it’s getting harder and harder to pay the bills. While the federal government can’t single-handedly force businesses to lower prices, it can open up sectors to more competition in several key areas under its control. These include the telephone, cable-television, Internet and credit-card industries. Lack of competition means Canadians pay very high prices for cellphone service, particularly for extras like roaming charges and data plans. The big three companies control almost all of the market and have shown little willingness to lower prices. On the cable-television front, consumers are forced to pay a lot of extra money for channels they don’t watch and also often pay expensive bundled charges for cable and Internet service. In these two areas alone, consumers are forced to pay out more every year, leading to an erosion of their ability to buy other goods and services. Banks charge businesses excessive fees for the ability to accept payment by credit card. This adds to retail prices. The federal government also needs to look into whether marketing boards benefit consumers. The main effect of such boards is to double prices for goods like milk and cheese, as compared to the United States. There is a slim indication the feds may be willing to take on the powerful dairy farmers’ lobby, as a free-trade deal with the European Union is on the horizon — and it allows for more cheese to be imported into Canada. The federal government can also look in its own backyard when reducing costs to consumers. It can stop levying GST on other taxes, as it does with fuel. Tax should be paid on goods or services, not on other taxes. Ottawa can also look at reducing high airport surcharges on travellers. The main effect of those charges, including security charges, airport taxes and other costs, is to drive Canadian air travellers to adjacent U.S. airports.

Re: Audits raise serious concerns with two agencies: “These organizations do such fantastic work within the community. “It’s a shame that one person is profiting so much from the efforts of so many others.” — posted by Shelley Blair “Oh, no. Someone is ripping us off? “The question is, which politician isn’t ripping us off? “The whole system needs to change or we are U.S.-bound in no time and we don’t want what’s going on down there.” — posted by Rocko Martin

Re: Letter: Fletcher notwithstanding, let’s talk about B.C. bud: “Did you forget the part about the police not being able to search you? “If I want to hide hard drugs, guns, cash or anything else, all I have to do is make sure I have a bag of weed on me and the police won’t be able to touch me or hold me. “Sounds good for the gangs!” — posted by Kevin-Deanna Feero

To RIH ER: Thanks for saving my father’s life Editor: My dad can’t remember the name of the doctor who was working in the ER department at Royal Inland Hospital on Saturday, Oct. 12. But, he wants to send his thanks. His breathing was obstructed due to a sore throat that his doctor diagnosed three months

earlier as acid reflux. Waiting for tests for acid reflux almost killed my father. On Friday night (Oct. 11), he tried to sleep and kept choking so, on Saturday, he went to the hospital’s emergency room. They brought him in right away and, after a battery of tests, found a mass on the back

of his tongue. It was large enough that, as he relaxed, it blocked his airway. Calls were put out for the on-call ear. nose and throat specialist, but to no avail. The ER doctor told my dad he would be seen that day, even if he had to get treatment outside of B.C. Luckily for us, a spe-

cialist was in Kelowna and would see my dad. I drove to Kelowna as fast as I could, hoping we would make it there in time. The doctor in Kelowna saw my father within 30 minutes of our arrival and diagnosed a tumour on the back of his tongue blocking his airway. On Sunday, Oct. 13,

an emergency tracheotomy was done to create an airway. The doctor in Kelowna is the son of a friend of my dad’s from Victoria. Thanks to the ER in Royal Inland Hospital for saving my father’s life. Jay Barlow Kamloops

63 VOTES WHAT’S YOUR TAKE? Is Kamloops’ sister-city relationship with Uji, Japan, money well-spent?

VOTE ONLINE kamloopsthisweek.com

But, I submit the real question ought to be whether the program is living up to its full potential. If the answer is no, that just means it’s time to reinvest in the relationship. Vancouver and Calgary each have six sister cities each. Our neighbour (cousin?) to the south, Kelowna, juggles three. Surely Kamloops can manage one sibling city — especially one that doesn’t seem to demand too much of us. The KTW story highlighted the $40,000 cost this year to maintain the relationship. If that is the price of facilitating even a modicum of cultural exchange and understanding, it’s worth every penny. Jay Muchi Kamloops

Sister-city relationship worth every penny spent All of this was done in an attempt to reduce the chance of conflict and to ultimately reduce the deadly costs of war. Since 1956, nearly 2,000 communities across 140 countries have been twinned or “sistered.” In 1990, after considering a few other possible pairings, Kamloops gained her one and only sister — Uji Japan. Over the past 23 years, the relationship has simmered, but has nevertheless generated some positive outcomes — high-school student exchanges, ESL teaching opportunities in Japan, etc. There are also, of course, the official annual delegations and formal exchanges of goodwill. Kamloops This Week recently asked its readers whether the sibling bond was worth the investment. I definitely think it is.

SURVEY RESULTS

Editor: Re: The Oct. 15 letter on the proposed Ajax mine from war veteran Iris C. Harrison (‘War veteran says we all have Choices’): I want to thank Iris for fighting for our country so we can have things like freedom of speech. I am truly amazed at the poem he wrote. My husband and I grew up in Kamloops and Iris’s words simply say it all. The thing people fail to realize is the damage Iris speaks of will be irreparable. People need to open their eyes and realize there are more important things than the almighty dollar. As Iris wrote, “we have a choice.” Speak up, use your voice, fight for the young ones who will follow us. They should be able to enjoy the things we did when we were young in our beautiful city. Sandy Jacobson Kamloops

Editor: Re: (‘Sisterly Love: Is sister-city bond worth the investment?’ Oct. 10): This past summer, I took a sombre stroll through the Pleasant Street Cemetery and I was taken aback by how many grave markers were from the Second World War. They are literally row upon row. The cost this community paid during that epic conflict is unfathomable. In the aftermath of that war, an international movement arose with a view to fusing cities around the world into formal sister-city relationships. This effort, led by the United States under the Eisenhower administration, was aimed at fostering understanding between different cultures, breaking down national barriers and building partnerships between communities abroad.

Traffic won’t be allowed over the Red Bridge for much of this weekend, but there will still be plenty of action on the span linking Kamloops with the Tk’emlups Indian Band reserve. The bridge will be closed between 9:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. from Friday, Oct. 18, to Sunday, Oct. 20, and again from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 21, as the Ministry of Transportation conducts a detailed inspection. Ministry spokeswoman Lisanna Bowness said the inspection is routine, though more detailed than the usual inspection performed on the province’s bridges every year. “This type of inspection requires crews to use lifts, rappelling with ropes

and a snooper truck parked on the deck that has a bucket with a long arm to access the underside of the bridge,” Bowness said via email. “The inspection consists of getting within arm’s reach of components for visual inspection, as well as a number of technical tests and assessments on those components to evaluate the structure.” She said the ministry doesn’t expect to uncover any issues with the bridge. Because the Red Bridge is so narrow, Bowness said it needs to be closed while crews are working. The original Red Bridge was built in 1887 and rebuilt again in 1912 and 1936. Its last major overhaul was in 2003, when the province kicked in about $1 million to replace many of its timber components.

TRU sets in motion guide for the future Alan Shaver is looking for the “a-ha!” moment. He also is hoping for the “Oh my goodness, why didn’t we think of that?” realization in others. From those two instances, the president of Thompson Rivers University is anticipating input that will not only help guide TRU in the future, but will lead to a model other institutions throughout the country and North American can look to if they want to emulate the facility and its many reaches into the community. The data will come from a priorities-planning process the university is embarking upon now, with online survey links for the people who work and study at TRU and the general populace that makes up the community surrounding the campus. Shaver said TRU is “on the threshold of being Canada’s most-modern university” with the many areas it encompasses. “Internationalization? We’ve got it,” Shaver said. “Entrepreneurship? We’ve got it. Focus on trades? We’ve got it. First law school? We’ve got it. “We don’t have all the programs, but the range we have suits the needs of the students in the community.” Shaver has created a committee of 35 people representing students, faculty, staff, alumni and the general public that will review the results of the surveys and establish strategic priorities for the next five years. Shaver said TRU is unique among universities in that its attitude “blurs the line between the university and the community” — which is why both sides of the campus borders are being invited to take part. Having worked in administration in two other postsecondary institutions — he was vice-president academic and provost at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia and dean of science at McGill University in Ontario — Shaver said every university is unique with its own challenges and benefits and TRU provides a model he suspects others might want to imitate. With its roots in the community-college system and a strong presence of trades programs still on campus, TRU combines the opportunity for pure learning and research with experiential learning. “It’s a question of a balance of the pendulum,” Shaver said. “We have a foot in the theory side and a foot in the practical side and we need to maintain some balance.” The surveys will be online at tru.ca/strategicpriorities.

PHYTOPLANKTON PRODUCTS Canadian “Superfood” Gaining International Attention Creator of UMAC CoreTM Still Defying The Odds UMAC-CORE is a unique product created out of an urgent need. In 2004 Tom Harper was diagnosed with a life threatening illness caused by asbestos exposure and given only months to live. He had been raising shellfish on his Research Sea Farm on Vancouver Island, simultaneously perfecting the only method worldwide of growing wild phytoplankton for use in the Aquaculture industry. Based on the wild plankton’s powerful nutritional profile, upon his diagnosis he decided to consume the blend of micronutrients as an energy source he so desperately needed as the time. Every day he ingested the minute ocean plant and everyday he felt stronger and experienced less pain. Finally a surgeon performed exploratory surgery. To the doctor’s surprise he was inexplicably able to deliver Mr. Harper a clean bill of health. Six years later, Tom Harper is healthy and, in his words,

“feeling totally different. I am pain free and I’m leading a good, healthy, normal life.” Not long after the product was officially launched in Canada and the U.S.A, the University of Utah completed a randomized full double-blind placebo control pilot study of UMAC-CORE over a 90 day period with human subjects. Doctors who conducted the studies were impressed with the results and concluded that UMACCORE really does help enhance the immune system and support mood fluctuations, quality of sleep, and overall emotional well-being.

Also, once the majority of plankton is harvested, the remaining plankton nutrients are returned back to the ocean-3 to 5 times more than what was originally “borrowed” to commence the bloom cycle; helping to strengthen the base of the ocean’s food chain.

UMAC-CORE is available in Liquid and Capsule quickly gained far more attention formulations. than Harper could have imagined. “People were experiencing really positive shifts in their health,” Harper says. “Our success was consumer driven and we weren’t quite prepared for the demand. There were times when staff would offer to spend the night at the office so that we could get the product out, and they often did!” Today UMAC-CORE is available in over 800 health food stores across Canada, in stores all across the United States and overseas in Australia, New Zealand and Spain. Following the interest and countless testimonials from the public, UMAC-CORE has been written about in dozens of newspapers across North America – and the excitement continues to grow.

MARINE M ARINE P PHYTOPLANKTON HYTOPLANKTON

Kim Iles of Choices 4 Wellness – a retailer in Chatham Ontario says, “I recommend UMAC-CORE to everybody – it’s one of the top two products in our whole store and that’s because people see results! I tell people that if they needed to pick only one thing, then pick UMAC-CORE. It has all the vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids. It’s a complete food and does so many different thing in the body that it’s probably the most complete supplement to recommend.” People are even giving it to their pets with remarkable results. In fact, Kim Iles says it’s the results she gets with animals that have convinced her of the product’s efficacy. “It’s not a placebo effect when you give it to your sick pets. We’ve nursed sick animals back to health with UMAC-CORE. That’s how I judge if a product really works-if you can see results with animals-and we do.” Mr. Harper’s Sea Farm which grows the wild phytoplankton offered in UMAC-CORE is also making a positive impact on the environment. “I consider it one of the greenest companies in the world. Not only are we able to give back to human beings, we are also giving back to the planet.”

Double Diamond events in November By Dale Bass STAFF REPORTER dale@kamloopsthisweek.com

Can too many diamonds cause confusion? Or, as Sun Rivers’ Leslie Brochu said, is it an opportunity to choose between men in red serge or firefighters — or both? Both Hoodoos restaurant at Sun Rivers and Kamloops firefighters at the Kamloops Convention Centre are hosting Diamond Dinner events this year for charities. The common name has caused some confusion, as have the dates, with Hoodoos and local RCMP officers offering their fundraising dinner on Nov. 8 and the firefighters hosting theirs on Nov. 15. Each benefits a charity: Hoodoos and the officers are raising money for the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Hospice House and the firefighters are continuing their work supporting a potential burn unit in Vancouver to serve the province. Each lays claim to the Diamond Dinner name. Kamloops firefighter Ryan Cail said he and his co-workers have held their own Ladies Diamond Dinner annually for the past few years, while Brochu, vice-president of marketing and public relations at Sun Rivers, said Hoodoos — which hosted the firefighters until this year — created the event and wants to continue the tradition. Cail said he and his co-workers

moved to the larger venue to allow for their fundraiser to grow and to change the programming. It has always been a sit-down dinner but, this year, food stations will be set up to allow for mingling. A keynote speaker, burn survivor Heidi Cave, will give a presentation. (Cave was featured in KTW on Tuesday, Oct. 2. The story can be accessed online at http://www. kamloopsthisweek.com/entertainment/226179051.html). Brochu said Hoodoos staff approached the firefighters and they agreed the money raised should go to the hospice, a facility Sun Rivers has supported in other ways in the past. She acknowledged there could be confusion, but said it’s really an opportunity for Kamloopsians “to spend an evening with men in red serge or with firefighters — or with both.” Tickets for the restaurant event are $75 and available at the venue, 1000 Clubhouse Dr., 250-828-9404. Included are a four-course dinner, a chance to win diamond jewelry, a silent auction, door prizes, a champagne-cocktail reception and, of course, the formally dressed officers. Tickets for the firefighters’ event are $80 and are available at Prestons restaurant and include food, wine from Harper’s Trail winery in Kamloops, the speech by Cave, music, a silent auction, draws for diamond jewelry and mingling with local firefighters.

Anti-mine rally set for Ajax’s office on Oct. 26 By Andrea Klassen

Kamloops resident Verdell Jessup is organizing a rally on Saturday, Oct. 26, to protest the proposed Ajax copper and gold mine. Jessup’s campaign includes this photo promoting the rally, which she hopes will attract up to 500 opponents of the project.

STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com

An anti-Ajax mine rally set to take place at the end of the month isn’t being spearheaded by any of the usual players in the mine debate — though its organizer is hoping they will show up. “It is not affiliated with any group and I am not a group,” Verdell Jessup told KTW via email. “Just one very concerned individual trying to rally individuals to show decision-makers that we are opposed to such developments, extraction-based activities in Kamloops which would degrade our health, water and environment.” Jessup is spearheading the Saturday, Oct. 26, rally outside KGHM Ajax’s office at 330 Seymour St. Jessup said she is

hoping her rally, which is set for noon on a Saturday, will attract younger opponents of the proposed copper and gold mine and help counteract criticism from some residents that opposition to Ajax

FLORENCE (YONGIE) DAN NOVEMBER 17, 1927 - OCTOBER 10, 2013

Florence Dan passed away suddenly, with family and friends at her side on October 10, 2013 at the age of 85 at Royal Inland Hospital. Florence will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her two daughters, Sharon (Charlie), Sandra (Mike), sister, Nora, 3 grandsons, 6 greatgrandchildren, 1 great-great-granddaughter, and many nieces, nephews and extended family. Predeceased by husband, Manuel, long time friend, Fred Krenke, a sister, 3 brothers and a grandson. Florence was born in Revelstoke in 1927 and moved to Kamloops as a young girl. She helped out with the family restaurant, the Bluebird Cafe and later spent most of her working years at the hospital and hotels, retiring at the age of 72. If friends desire, donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of BC and Yukon, 729 Victoria Street, Kamloops , BC V2C 2B5 in memory of Florence Dan. A Celebration of life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 19, 2013 at the Schoening Funeral Chapel, 513 Seymour Street, Kamloops, BC.

is mainly limited to the grey-haired set. “I have many friends who are opposed who are under the age of 44, young working professionals who hold government positions and work at

the university,” Jessup said. “We care what happens in our backyard and, for some, their front yards.” Jessup said she is concerned about the health and environ-

mental risks posed by the proposed mine. Though KGHM has said it won’t be looking for an environmental certificate for its mine until at least 2014, Jessup believes mine opponents need

to keep getting their message out in the interim. “We cannot just sit and wait for the assessment to be completed,” she said. “We need to raise awareness on a continuous basis. “Each individual needs to conduct their own personal inquiry and research, ask questions and talk about the Ajax proposal with your friends, family and even complete strangers.” While she isn’t sure how many people she should expect, Jessup said she’d like

A Vanished Friend Around the corner I have a friend In this great city that has no end; Yet days go by, and weeks rush on, And before I know it a year has gone, And I never see my old friend’s face, For life is a swift and terrible race. He knows I like him just as well As in the days when I rang his bell, And he rang mine. We were younger then, And now we are busy, tired men, Tired of playing a foolish game, Tired with trying to make a name. “Tomorrow, I will call on Jim, Just to show that I am thinking of him.” But tomorrow comes and tomorrow goes, grows, And the distance between us grows and grow A ws, Around the corner, yet miles away “Here’s a telegram, sir,” “Jim died today!” end, And that’s what we get, and deserve in the en A nd, Around the corner a vanished friend!!

to see a turnout of 500 and hopes members of the Kamloops Area Preservation Association (KAPA), Kamloops Moms for Clean Air and others will join her. On its Facebook page, KAPA is supportive of the event, though the association notes it isn’t directly involved. “We wish them luck and encourage all of you to go out and show your opposition to this mine,” a posting made Wednesday, Oct. 16 reads. A recent anti-Ajax rally at Thompson Rivers University, held at the end of a four-day community workshop series presented by the mine’s proponents, drew more than 200 people — though that number included counter-protestors who showed up to support the project.

Kamloops business in optimistic mood By Andrea Klassen STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com

The latest business retention and expansion survey from Venture Kamloops shows businesses in the Tournament Capital were feeling optimistic entering this year. In a survey of 70 businesses, conducted last fall and winter, more than half of respondents said they were planning to expand their Kamloops operations and only three per cent were considering downsizing in 2013. The survey, released on Wednesday, Oct. 16, also showed 91 per cent of the companies Venture Kamloops spoke with were expecting positive sales growth, with most expecting a one per cent to nine per cent increase in sales. Another 39 per cent said they were considering or planning to move some jobs being done outside the city to Kamloops. Interviews for the survey were conducted by Venture Kamloops’ business retention and expansion manager, Colin O’Leary, with an eye to picking a representative sample of city businesses. The majority of respondents were small companies with 100 or fewer employees. Generally, according to the report, companies are satisfied with the business climate in Kamloops, with 63 per

cent of businesses responding positively to the question “How do you find doing business in Kamloops? “This is not to say that 35 per cent of businesses were negative, the report says, “more than their initial tendency to comment was of a negative nature. For those with issues, finding good workers and city taxes, particularly for industrial ratepayers, got the largest spikes of dissatisfaction. Just over 22 per cent of businesses said it’s tough to find workers. Skilled tradespeople were identified as the most difficult to come by. And, while commercial taxes in Kamloops didn’t stir up much discontent — only 11 per cent of respondents took issue with rates — 30 per cent of respondents were unhappy with what industry pays. The city got top marks when it came to infrastructure, with most companies commenting positively on roads, transit, sewer and water services and utility costs. The survey notes that of the 70 businesses surveyed, nearly all brought up the proposed KGHM Ajax copper and gold mine, though there was no consensus about its effects on the city should the project proceed. “The business community is very polarized with regards to their thoughts toward the project as well as other projects/events and their impact on Kamloops, the report says.

Baker’s big break Kamloops MMA product trains with some of world’s best, including Silva, dos Santos, Nogueira By Marty Hastings STAFF REPORTER sports@kamloopsthisweek.com

M

ATT (THE RIOTMAKER) Baker will be looking to raise hell in the biggest fight of his career thus far, a World Series of Fighting (WSOF) tilt at the PNE Agrodome in Vancouver on Dec. 7. “This is my first big break,” said Baker, who recently signed on with WSOF, widely considered the thirdbest mixed-martial-arts promotion in North America, behind Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and Bellator. “It’s a huge fight, especially if I get on the NBC portion, the main card, if let’s say I have the knockout of the night and put on a good show. It’s only up from there.” The Las Vegasbased WSOF recently bought one of the fastest growing Canadian MMA promotions — Aggression Fighting Championship — as part of its effort to establish branches in Japan, Central America, Brazil, China, the United Kingdom, Mexico and the Great White North. As Baker alluded to, NBC Sports Network

owns the WSOF television rights and the upcoming Vancouver fight night — headlined by former UFC lightheavyweights Anthony (Rumble) Johnson (154) and Mike (MAK) Kyle (20-10-1) — will be aired live. The Riotmaker will be on the undercard chucking knuckles with a yet-to-be-named opponent — the tilt is not expected to be televised in its entirety, but Baker can earn valuable air time with a flashy knockout or submission, or by claiming fight-ofthe-night honours. “It’s all about marketing and how you market yourself,” said Baker, who boasts a 10-4 record. “I’ve got as many people that hate me as they do like me. I work hard at that.” Baker was not able to disclose how much money he stands to rake in with a win, but KTW learned it would likely be somewhere in the $10,000 range. “As far as Canadians who fight outside of the UFC, I’m doing pretty good,” Baker said. The 29-year-old Sa-Hali secondary graduate is the only Canadian member of Team Nogueira Rio, a stable of fighters that

includes some of the UFC’s biggest names. Baker has been to Brazil five times in the past three years, training with the likes of Anderson Silva and Junior dos Santos. Due to his involvement in a barfight in 2002, Baker was not allowed to try out for the UFC’s longrunning reality series, The Ultimate Fighter, eliminating one potential route to MMA’s biggest stage. Luckily for Baker, WSOF Canada’s chief operating officer Darren Owen has had an eye on the Kamloops product and was quick to acquire him for the Vancouver event. “He just came up to me and said they wanted exciting Canadian fighters and they’ve wanted me for a while,” said Baker, a stand-up fighter who makes no bones about his preference for knockouts over submissions. “I went to Brazil to learn jiujitsu because it was my only weakness but, for some reason, in my fights I don’t like to use it. I like to fight.” The Suncor employee recently bought a house in the Tournament Capital with his fiancé. Without Suncor, fighting three times

a year would not be enough to make ends meet financially on his current prize-purse scale, but there is no telling what one big knockout on national television could do for his career. His coach, Bibiano Fernandes, is slated to fight for the ONE FC bantamweight title in Singapore on Friday, Oct. 18. Baker will be in his corner for the showdown. The winner will walk away with about $300,000. If Baker can reach those heights, he’ll have that house paid off in no time. “This fight is very huge,” Baker said. “World Series of Fighting is the highest stage any Kamloops fighter has reached.”

Without sponsorship, outlook bleak for Crown’s future By Marty Hastings STAFF REPORTER sports@kamloopsthisweek.com

The Kamloops Crown of Curling has been around since 1974, but there is no guarantee it will exist in 2015. “Unless we can find a title sponsor, I would say the event is at risk,” said Frank Mayhood, chair of the World Curling Tour (WCT) cashspiel, which gets underway at Kamloops Curling Club (KCC) on Friday, Oct. 18, and wraps up on Monday, Oct. 21. “We’re losing money as a club on this event. How much, I’m not quite sure yet, but we are going to lose money.” The 40th running of the Crown will feature 40 entrants — 22 women’s teams and 18 men’s rinks. Mayhood was gunning for 24 on each side. “There are lots of international teams, but not a lot of the big-name Canadian teams,” Mayhood said.

Foul language lands Hennelly in hot water TRU WolfPack men’s volleyball coach Pat Hennelly has been slapped with a onegame suspension by a Canada West review committee for using inappropriate language with officials. “When a coach fails to live up to conduct expectations, Canada West, in accordance with the conduct, discipline and appeals policy, reserves the right to take whatever action it deems warranted by the misconduct,” Canada West executive director Diane St-Denis said. “The conduct displayed by Mr. Hennelly is not only unacceptable, but also unbecoming of an individual in a leadership position. Coaches are expected to be role models and project a positive image for university sport.” He will miss the WolfPack’s first regularseason game, a tilt with the UBC Okanagan Heat in Kelowna on Oct. 25. The use of inappropriate language occurred during a nonconference, exhibition match with the Guelph Gryphons on Oct. 10 at the Tournament Capital Centre.

“The next week is the first of the [WCT Masters of Curling] Grand Slams, so a lot of them are taking the week off.” Sponsorship money has been tough to come by, said Mayhood, who jumped into the chairman’s role in June when then-chair Len Bosch was offered and accepted the position of vice-chair for the 2014 Tim Hortons Brier. “When you start late and you don’t have a title sponsor, you’re down a whole bunch of fundraising and it’s a little bit frustrating,” Mayhood said. “The club [KCC] is essentially doing the title-sponsor role.” Valley First was the title sponsor of the 2012 Crown, but has since stepped away. Title sponsors for the event supply between $7,500 and $10,000. The women’s bracket this year will feature international squads from China, Korea, Japan, Denmark, Switzerland and the U.S., along with two Kamloops rinks, skipped by

Allison MacInnes and Corryn Brown. Representing the Tournament Capital on the men’s side are Darren Nelson, Grant Olsen, Brad Thompson and Brent Yamada. The semifinals are slated for 12:30 p.m. on Monday, with the championship matchups to follow at 4 p.m. For a complete schedule, go online to worldcurl.com. Top prize on the women’s side is $7,500, with the winning men’s rink set to take home $7,000. The total tournament purse is $60,000. The 2012 champions were Bingyu Wang of China and Brent Pierce of New Westminster. Mayhood said it would

be tough to resuscitate the tournament if it were to take a year off. “On the World Curling Tour these days, if you lose your weekend, then somebody else jumps in and gets people used to coming to their rink,” he said. “These teams are creatures of habit. They make up their schedules months or years in advance so, if you’re not part of their schedule, it’s tough to get on.” A 40-year history is not the only reason why it would be a shame to lose the Crown. The tournament still features

high-quality curling, with ranking points up for grabs, along with the cash. “There are WCT-team ranking points and, in an Olympic year, there are Canadian-team ranking points, which lead to getting into the final competition to make the Olympics,” Mayhood said. “And, if you’re going to build yourself into an elite team, you have to start somewhere and these cashspiels are a training ground for competitive curling, to see if you’re worth sponsorship, which you need to travel the country full-time.”

Pool players find home at Dirty Jersey STAFF REPORTER sports@kamloopsthisweek.com

Cue-toting snipers are invited to the Pool Room at the Dirty Jersey where they can chalk up and polish their game before the city championships are held. “We’re going to hold the city championships in a few months time, but we’re trying to draw interest to our weekly tourna-

ments,” said Mike Friesen, who runs the pool room at the North Shore establishment (1200 Eighth St.). “We have quite a venue. The pool room itself is excellent.” Vegas-rule 8-ball

Kamloops golfer at nationals After a two-year absence, the TRU WolfPack golf team is being represented at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association national championships. Brent Pound of Kamloops is in La Belle Province for the championships, being held at the Royal Quebec Golf Club in Quebec City. WolfPack head coach Bill Bilton Jr. said Pound, who finished fourth in the Pacific Western Athletic Association individual men’s standings, has a chance to contend with the nation’s best.

tournaments are held on Thursday nights and Vegas-rule 9-ball tourneys are held on Friday nights. Registration opens at 6 p.m. and the action gets underway at 7 p.m. It costs $10 to enter and players of all skill levels are welcome. Friesen said there is no lack of high-end competition, pointing to Matt Bracewell as a prime example.

“He’s part of a team that’s won the BCA [Billiard Congress of America] like four out of six years,” Friesen said. “He broke and ran I think eight out of 10 games last week. “He’s exceptionally gifted and has quite a pedigree. We’re lucky to have him.” The Dirty Jersey’s pool room is open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

A conversation with a master

I

recently had the opportunity to spend an afternoon painting with local artist David Langevin. I have to admit I love watching other artists at work. It is such a joy to see all the different approaches to creativity and art. The first time I met Langevin I was immediately struck by his soft spoken kind nature. This man has achieved greatness in his chosen career by doing what he does very well; he examines nature with a critical eye and interprets it with a delicate brush stroke. Karla Pearce He is represented by some of the top commercial galleries across Canada and his paintings are in high demand nationally The Creative and abroad. EDGE The following is a question-and-answer segment with Langevin.

B-section co-ordinator: Tim Petruk tim@kamloopsthisweek.com Ph: 250-374-7467 Ext: 234

KTW arts columnist Karla Pearce sat down with David Langevin

Karla Pearce: Tell us about your background. David Langevin: I am a full-time, professional artist. I paint in oils and acrylics and I sell my work in galleries across Canada. I grew up in Sherbrooke, Que., in a large family of eight children, I am number seven. I started to draw before school age and, by the time I was in grade school, I was able to make convincing drawings of my favourite subjects — mostly animals, cars and hockey players — and I also started my

art business career at that same time and was actively trading drawings for comic books or lunch money. KP: How did you get your start in art and painting? DL: I remember my first painting experience was not so positive, particularly for my two older sisters, because I got into their paint-by-number projects when they weren’t around and finished a couple of paintings with little regard for the numbers and lines. X From B1

It worked out OK for me as I was given my first set of acrylic paints to work with instead. I quickly learned to paint very realistic subjects and made several commission paintings for relatives and neighbours. I had switched to oils by this time because they were easier to blend and create fine detail with than acrylic paints. KP: When did you know you were an artist? DL: I already knew then that I was going to be an artist and, by the time I finished high school, I thought I also wanted to teach art in some capacity. KP: What is your professional training? DL: I went to CEGEP (college) after high school to study arts plastiques [fine arts] and then went on the get a bachelor of fine-arts degree. Later, I also did a master’s degree in art education. After graduating with a BFA, I still had learned almost nothing about painting techniques and materials, or about the business of making a living as a professional artist. Art history classes were a revelation for me, however — I was very intrigued by

FRIDAY

the paintings of some of the socalled old masters, particularly painters from the early 15th to the end of the 18th centuries. KP: What did you do after all that education? DL: I didn’t know what to do with myself after graduating. I am the kind of painter who needs to know that when I sit down to paint, I have full control and mastery of my materials so that the painting process is just about creativity and expression, getting into that zone. I want to know that I can create any effect with paint that I can imagine or see in the work of any other artist, dead or alive. For me, that is expressive freedom. KP: What finally brought you to your creative muse? DL: I taught art for several years and loved the experience. I also had a job teaching art programs at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. It is there that I finally discovered the elusive knowledge that I had longed for in university. The conservation and restoration department of the museum had a library full of information on the techniques of painting and the materials and methods used by historical painters. I spent the next several years

studying old manuscripts, artist’s letters and out-of-print conservation treatises and texts on the methods and materials of my favourite painters — Van Eyck, Da Vinci, Raphael, Correggio, Titian, Carravaggio (my very favourite painter), Rubens and Rembrandt, who were some the most prominent influences for me. It was as close as I could come to taking a painting class with these artists or to sit next to them and watch them paint and ask questions. KP: What was the biggest change in your creative career? DL: I decided in the early 1990s that it was time to quit teaching and start painting full-time. It was time to leave Montreal and move out to British Columbia to concentrate on landscape painting. I was already starting to focus in on the tree-portrait theme that I have become known for and I was drawn to the coniferous tress and the mountains of the West. KP: How did the move change your artistic process? DL: Living in B.C., and in Kamloops in particular, is a dream for a landscape painter like me.

The ‘roots’ of the original AdrenaSense Formula Throughout my life I had good health and boundless energy and then suddenly in my early 30’s I hit the wall with fatigue… I had three children under the age of 3, my marriage broke up, and I went back to work thinking I could ‘do it all’. My body did not agree… nothing helped the crippling fatigue until I saw a naturopathic doctor who introduced me to my adrenal glands. When I started naturopathic practice in the 1980’s it was my own experience with adrenal fatigue that allowed me to recognize it in my patients and over the years I saw the need for an effective adrenal supplement. AdrenaSense® is the original solution I formulated for patients and others who have found it very effective.

The Original AdrenaSense Formula: The herbs in the AdrenaSense formula are called adaptogens that have been proven to support stress reactions and normalize adrenal function. These include Rhodiola, Suma, Schizandra Berries, Siberian Ginseng and Ashwagandha, which in combination, enhance mental and physical performance; balance the nervous system helping with anxiety and insomnia; support the immune, cardiovascular and hormonal systems; counteract fatigue, anxiety and depression; as well as provide vital energy.

Painting ‘certainly does not feel like work’ X From B3

The province has so much variety in the landscape, the climate, all the various types of mountains — and all within a couple of hours drive from here. I like to paint all kinds of trees, mountains, all the seasons and the ocean, too. KP: What inspires you the most? DL: The painting themselves, the creative momentum of producing art, is what inspires me to paint more than anything. My painting process is backwards from what most people might expect. I have an image in my mind of what I want to paint, then I use reference material, like photographs, to put it together. I hike around taking pictures but, most often, I am not looking for a scene to reproduce but, rather, compositional elements that I can use for the painting in my vision — diagonals, negative spaces, juxtaposing shapes and so on. KP: What is the best thing about being an artist? DL: I often tell people when they ask about my career that I don’t really work. It certainly does not feel like work as most people understand it or experience it. I have always lived my life that way. People say that I am lucky because I get to do what I love. I think it is easy to love your job when you are doing what you are best suited to do. Life just flows more naturally, it seems to me. Still, I have worked very hard and made many choices and sacrifices that most people would not consider safe or reasonable. Are there challenges and stresses? Of course, it is still life, after all, and I am still myself. KP: Do you think you will ever retire? DL: I really do enjoy my life. I paint, I do shows at galleries all over the country, I play tennis, I play music, I hike in some of the most spectacular places on the planet. All of these activities connect me in different ways to many wonderful people. I am also often asked, “Are you going to take a break, go on a holiday?” I can only say, “A break from what?” Why would I want to stop doing this? This is my life. Will I retire? Retire from what? I am painting less than I used to,

Wagon Rides to the

though, less galleries now, less shows. But, I will always keep painting and people still want to buy my art and so I am blessed to continue my privileged lifestyle.

Whistler-based band Animal Nation will be in Kamloops on Friday, Oct. 18, as part of the Ghost Bus Tour with headliner Kyprios. Garnet Claire, one of the founding members of the trio and the DJ for Kyprios’s set, said his band does fun hip-hop “with a lot of instrumentation,” their own songs and some covers. Claire and Mike Armitage started in 2006, with Armitage handling vocals. Guitarist Jeff Waters was added later, making it a trio. The tour is heading to Montreal, Claire said. He and his band have spent much of the year touring with Kyprios, the Vancouver native who co-founded Sweatshop Union, a band he continues to perform with when not working on solo ventures or writing for other performers. Claire said the show at On the Rocks Pub and Grill, 1265 Rogers Way, is free and will also feature DJ Hinchy.

PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, while it can be challenging to sit idle, lazy days are very often great ways to catch up on some rest and personal time.

VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, there are serious things to consider with respect to your family life, and not all of the conversations will go your way. Be patient and work through everything a little at a time. LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, whether feedback from work is positive or negative, rest assured that hard work will ultimately garner some recognition. Keep working hard and all will work out.

The great crabapple caper

I

Crab-apple jelly 4 1-cup canning jars 3 pounds crab apples 3 cups water 2 1/4 cups granulated sugar Remove stems and cut away blossom ends from crab apples. Do not peel or core. In a large pot over high heat, bring crab apples and water to a boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer, stirring occasionally, for about 10 minutes or until apples are softened. Crush crab apples using a potato masher, then cook for five minutes more. Soak and then wring out a clean

jelly bag and suspend it on a frame over a large, clean, glass measuring cup. Fill bag with crab apples and let drip, without squeezing bag, for about two hours or until the juice measures 3 1/4 cups, adding additional water if necessary to make the mark. In large clean pot, combine juice and sugar and bring to a full rolling boil over medium-high heat, stirring constantly. Boil for 15 to 18 minutes or until gel stage (see below). Remove from heat and skim off foam. Using a funnel, fill clean, hot, onecup canning jars, leaving 1/4-inch headspace. Cover with prepared lids.

Screw on bands until fingertip tight. Place in a boiling water canning bath for 10 minutes. (For more information on safe canning, go online to canningbasics.com.) Gel Stage Test: • Chill a few small plates in freezer. • Remove pot from heat while performing gel test. • Place 1 tsp hot jelly or jam on plate and place in freezer for 1 minute. • Remove from freezer. Push finger through surface, which should wrinkle. • If surface wrinkling doesn’t occur, continue cooking and repeat test every few minutes.

Happy Halloween — in moderation less “Trick or treat!”, waiting to see what would be put into

our pillowcases. This tradition has changed very little; however, many things have changed. The costumes now on display in most retail stores are amazing. Gone are the days of the white sheet ghost, here to stay are action figures, princesses and zombies. As a nutritionist, I am always asked what we “do” with all of the Halloween candy. I often recommend everything in moderation. There is no one right approach to Halloween and every family needs to decide what works best for them. When pressed for more information, I usually talk about the expert Ellyn Satter and her views on feeding children. Satter is a U.S. dietitian who works with children and parents on building a healthy feeding relationship. Her bottom line on improving meal times is setting up the division of responsibility. This division states that parents are responsible for what food is served and when it is served. The child is responsible for deciding what is eaten, how much is eaten or if anything is eaten at all. For more information visit her website at ellynsatterinstitute.org. Through this relationship, children learn to recognize and respect their own hunger and fullness cues. Self-regulation is so important for our children, especially around eating. Satter published an article about Halloween: “Halloween candy presents a learning opportunity. Work toward having your child be able to manage his own stash. “For him to learn, you will have to keep your interference to a minimum. “When he comes home from trick or treating, let him lay out his booty, gloat over it, sort it and eat as much of it as he wants.

Halloween all about family fun X From B12

“Let him do the same the next day. “Then have him put it away and relegate it to meal and snack time — a couple of small pieces at meals for dessert and as much as he wants for snack time. “If he can follow the rules, your child gets to keep control of the stash. “Otherwise, you do, on the assumption that as soon as he can manage it, he gets to keep it. Offer milk with the candy, and you have a chance at good nutrition.’’ But, most importantly, make sure your children know they must have you check the treats for safety before they eat them. Only keep the treats if they are in their original wrappers. If you are looking for trick or treat alternatives for the children coming to your door, some items could include stickers or temporary tattoos, coloured chalk, rubber spiders, pencils, erasers or pencil toppers, bubbles and wands. At the end of the day, it is about family and spending time together, so, most of all, be safe and have fun!

Thank you for a product that actually works. Hyacinth Twin, 73, Miami, FL For the last 4 years my doctor told me that my kidneys did not function properly. After using the Bell Kidney Tea for 9 weeks my GFR Filtration Rate went from 29 to 43. I couldn’t be more delighted. I intend to drink the tea until I reach my goal of a GFR of 60. This product really works. Aaron H. Goldman, 86, Bronx, NY The Mount Sinai School of Medicine Newsletter May 2010 states that normal kidney function cannot be restored with medicine. The main goal of treatment is to slow the progression of the disease by eating more fresh fruit and vegetables. This is the advice 40 million Americans with abnormal kidney function get (in Canada about 4 million could benefit greatly from this kidney tea). The president of Bell Lifestyle is using the tea himself with a kidney function increase from 45% to 61% in 2 months and guarantees that the tea works or he refunds your money.

Seeing God’s grace in the rainbow’s beauty

O

N A RECENT afternoon, I was walking our dog along Collingwood Drive just after a rainstorm had thoroughly soaked most of Kamloops. The bright sunshine replaced the dark clouds and it felt warm on my back as I walked facing Strawberry Hill. I looked up into the sky and saw an intense, beautiful rainbow that stretched in an arch from just below the peak of Strawberry Hill to the back side of Mount Peter. The conditions were perfect for such a rainbow to appear and I watched in awe as the colours streamed across the sky. It was like a beautiful bridge had been built to span the gulf between the two mountains. Of late, there have been a number of references to rainbows. I thought of the stories

JOHN NOAKES You Gotta Have FAITH in the local newspapers and on the TV news coverage. But, I thought also of the rainbows I had seen when I was a child and had wondered at the beauty of them. I also thought of the Sunday School stories about a very special rainbow that we were taught God had placed in the sky. What was so special about that rainbow? With the rainbow, God gave His covenant of grace. How could that be? The story of Noah

If this page had colour, this photo of a rainbow over Kamloops would leave you speechless. It really would. And this means you simply must go online right now to kamloopsthisweek.com, click on the “Lifestyles” tab and view it in all its brilliant glory. KTW file photo

and the ark can be found in Genesis 6:11 through Genesis 9:18 . Did it not take Noah a period of time to build the ark? Instead of listening to Noah, the people who saw him mocked him and called Noah a fool for building the monstrous boat in a place where it almost never rained. What a fool Noah was. After Noah, his family and the land animals were on the ark, a period of seven days passed before God closed the door. Seven days passed by when people still went by and mocked Noah as he stayed in the ark, waiting for something to happen. Only when the rains came, and didn’t cease, did the people outside the ark realize what a mistake they had made. Genesis 9:12-14: “And God said, This is the token of the covenant

And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud.” When Christ came, He was the fulfilment of the covenant between God and man.
