2014 POWWOW HEAD STAFF HOST DRUM Young Bird, Pawnee, Oklahoma Since forming in 1997, Young Bird has travelled all across North America representing Pawnee, Okla., and sharing the beautiful sounds of the Southern Plains. While representing many different tribes of Oklahoma, YoungBird has always carried pride and respect for the ways of the Southern Drum. YoungBird has carried hopes to create new paths in which no other Southern drum group has had the opportunity, while upholding the pride and respect for preceding southern drum groups such as Rose Hill and Bad Medicine. HONORARY HOST DRUM Sage Hills Singers, Kamloops, B.C. Our name represents the Kamloops area, Tk’emlĂşps known to the SecwĂŠpemc people as “where the rivers meetâ€? and where we make our home. Sage Hills formed in the winter of 2003; we have travelled to powwows throughout BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, California, Idaho and Washington. MASTERS OF CEREMONIES Stan Isadore, Slave Lake, Alta. My name is Stan Isadore. I am a Cree Native from the Driftpile band. I was born in High Prairie, Alta., in 1972 and raised on the Driftpile reservation. My whole life and the activities as well as experiences I’ve encountered have been aimed towards performing or theatre related. I began the Native style of dance at the age of two. Russell Red Crow, Standoff, Alta. Oki/hello, my name is Russell Red Crow. I am a member of the Blood Tribe in Southern Alberta, we are 1 of the 4 bands that make up the Blackfoot Confederacy. It is great to back in beautiful Kamloops, BC and be part of this wonderful powwow. ARENA DIRECTOR Dale Alexis, Alexis, Alta. Aba washded; hello. I am of Stony decent and speak my language fluently. I am 47 years old and was born and raised on the Alexis Nakoda Sioux Nation in Alberta. I am one of 11 children (four girls, seven boys) born to Alexander and Bella Alexis. I have two children; Dale Jr. is 24 years old and my daughter, Natalya is 14 years old. I have been involved in the powwow circle for approximately 30 years as a singer, grass dancer and an arena director. As a young man, I was chosen by my tribe to take on the responsibilities of an arena director. Over time, I have learned from various mentors, elders and
well renowned powwow veterans. I take my job as an arena director seriously and take great pleasure in working with the dancers and singers. I see the role of an arena director as a form of structure that we all must follow to maintain law and order in the arbor and to ensure the success of a powwow. WHIPMAN Kasey Nicholson, Fort Belknap Reservation, MT Kasey Nicholson is a member of the Ah-aah-niiih (White Clay) Nation of the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation in North-Central Montana. Kasey also has bloodlines tied to the Blackfeet Nation, Crow Nation, Arapaho Nation, Inuit Nation and Blood Nation. Kasey lives in Fort Belknap Indian Community, Montana, and is selfemployed as a Motivational Speaker, Comedian and Life Coach. He is honoured to serve as the Whipman at this year’s 2014 Kamloopa Powwow. Kasey has been dancing for many years and is a champion grass and chicken dancer. Kasey has also sung with various drum groups, such as Dry Lake, Black Bull Jr.s, Assiniboine Cree and others. In addition to dancing and singing at pow-wows, Kasey is a presenter and entertainer for a variety of ages and backgrounds on issues both pertinent to Native and urban communities. Kasey speaks of cultural-identity issues, educational endeavours, spiritual awareness, cultural understanding, substance abuse awareness, suicide prevention, and many other issues that face Native America today. HEAD DANCE JUDGE Brandon Daniels, Morley, Alta. Brandon Daniels, a Stoney-Nakoda Sioux from Bearspaw Band in Morley, Alberta making his home in Kamloops, British Columbia, with his wife Delyla and their twin daughters Ella and Alexa. Brandon comes from a family of singers and dancers; he has experienced the life of the powwow trail traveling across Canada and the United States. Powwow has been a part of his life for over 20 years; he’s been a grass dancer since 1984 and started singing 1992. And, he is the lead singer of Sage Hills. Brandon would like to welcome all powwow people, visiting spectators, arts and crafts people and special guests to the 35th Annual Kamloopa Powwow. Brandon is honoured to be asked to be a Head Dance Judge for this year’s powwow and would like to express my thanks to the Kamloopa Powwow Society for the opportunity. Brandon wishes all the contestants luck and a safe travel home for everyone! HEAD DRUM JUDGE Shawn Bottle, Standoff, Alta. Shawn Bottle, a Blackfoot from the Blood Tribe in Standoff, Alta.
