Arctic freeze has triggered extreme alert

NOW? In this week’s editions of KTW, we present our annual Where Are They Now? series, in which we catch up with newsmakers of the past. First up is Baby Henry (Thing 1 in photo at right with twin brother Seamus and with mom, Miranda, below), who celebrated his first birthday last month after a year of several surgeries related to his heart.

BABY HENRY IS GROWING UP ANDREA KLASSEN STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com
Nearly 70 guests showed up to the birthday party on Nov. 12. Dressed in Dr. Seuss-themed shirts bearing the words Thing One and Thing Two, twin birthday boys Henry and Seamus Brown celebrated their first year of life — one that has featured plenty of long drives, hospital visits, surgeries and prayers.
“It was so good,” said Henry’s mom, Miranda. “It was exactly what I hoped for, just that we made it a year.” Three-hundred-and-sixty-five days earlier, mother and babies were on their way to B.C. Children’s Hospital in Vancouver, after doctors at Royal Inland Hospital determined Henry would need open-heart surgery shortly after birth. While a normal heart has four chambers, Henry’s has only three. He is also missing the pulmonary artery, which

enables the circulation of oxygen in the bloodstream. Since that first diagnosis, Henry has had several surgeries, including two open-heart procedures. In April, doctors at B.C. Children’s Hospital were able to rebuild Henry’s heart with a donor artery, but the tissue won’t grow with him as he ages, meaning more procedures will be required.

With several more days of freezing temperatures expected, Duane Seibel is confident the homeless in the city will be kept warm at night. Seibel, acting executive director of the Kamloops branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), said changes this year have increased housing options. Through a partnership with the ASK Wellness Society and with funding through the federal Homelessness Partnering Strategy, 10 “apartment-type situations” have been added to the housing inventory, Seibel said, noting ASK is working on developing five more units that will be available in January. ASK executive director Bob Hughes said finding and creating an additional 15 housing units in a short time

span — the project took place in recent months — speaks well for the way the city helps its homeless. “In Vancouver, you’ve got them celebrating their shelters and we’re adding to our housing capacity here,” Hughes said. “It’s going to have a dramatic impact.” Emerald Centre, the CMHA shelter on West Victoria Street, has a capacity of 35 but, through the province’s extreme-weather response (EWR) program, another 10 people can be added to that limit, said shelter manager Charlene Eden. “We’re making sure nobody is sleeping outside,” she said. The EWR is triggered daily when the temperature drops to -7 C. Environment Canada is calling for the Arctic deep freeze to linger through this week, with wind being the main culprit. See SHELTER A6

DAVE EAGLES/KTW Retired Kamloops principal Ray Hellmen (seated) shares a hearty laugh with venerable Kamloops barber Al LaChance on Christmas Eve day. After 64 years of cutting hair, the 85-year-old LaChance is putting down the scissors.

Kamloops’ longest-practising barber is hanging up his clippers for good. Al LaChance has been a barber for the past 64 years and has been cutting hair in Kamloops since 1966. Offering a hot shave and a haircut, LaChance got to know Kamloops in an upclose and personal way. He has shorn the locks of politicians, actors, musicians and innumerable locals, young and old alike. He has even made special trips to customers who were no longer able to visit his Plaza Hotel barber chair. The good-natured banter LaChance shared

with customers proved to be yet another reason they kept coming back. He was quick to match wits with the best of them, offering up just the right quip or joke. As a young boy growing up in Mission, LaChance remembered making the decision to get a paper route. By delivering papers, LaChance figured he could earn enough money to have a barber other than his father, also a barber, cut his hair. “I’m gonna go and see a barber that I wanted,” LaChance recalled. “Because the old man, he’d just skin us alive.” Years later, after his father had died, LaChance said his mother put her foot down with her three then-teenaged boys. “She wanted us to stop wasting our

days riding the rails across Canada,” LaChance said. Several times the brothers would jump a freight train, hiding in a boxcar as they made their way across the country. LaChance’s mom laid down the law for all the boys. “All right, you guys, that’s it,” she said. “You’re finished. You’re gonna start to go to barber school. You’re going to do your dad’s business and if you don’t like it . . .!” Each of the three brothers became professional barbers, all making a career of it. “That was 64 years ago,” LaChance told KTW while cutting yet another head of hair on Christmas Eve day — his final shift at his post in his downtown barber shop. “I’ve been at it ever since.”

to $250,000 to repair the engine. The 102-year-old engine was parked more than a year ago when the society learned it needed repairs to be able to secure a federal operating licence from Transport Canada. At the time, the best estimate was the work could cost up to $400,000 but, once the engine was stripped down, the amount of work required wasn’t as extensive as feared. Society volunteers did some fundraising campaigns to help with the costs and the City of Kamloops came in with a $200,000 grant. Wideman said the boiler has been repaired and passed inspection. Society volunteers are now waiting for delivery of tubes required to repair the smoke box — the part of the engine where the steam comes out. It will take about three weeks to install the new tubes and then another month to put the engine back together, Wideman said.
“So, we’re hoping to have it steaming by May, he said. A cost-saving was obtained when the society found a local company that could do much of the work. When volunteers began the repair planning, they thought they would have to bring in boiler experts, paying their expenses while they were in Kamloops. “That saved us so much money, Wideman said. As for 2015, the society has some new plans in the works with the train — but can’t announce them until they discuss them with the city.
Brown family gets better news From A1
Though the Pinantan Lake family of 11 had initially hoped Henry’s second open-heart surgery would lead to fewer hospital visits in Vancouver, Miranda said that didn’t turn out to be the case. Instead, over the spring and summer, the Browns were never away from the Lower Mainland for more than three weeks at a time as Henry underwent another surgery to deal with a paralyzed diaphragm and later had a feeding tube installed in his stomach. “It was a pretty big roller coaster, Miranda said. “Things didn’t really calm down until about the end of August. A second scare made the summer more chaotic, as the Brown’s 13-year-old son, Zachary, developed a tumour on his eye that had to be surgically removed. Winter brought some better news for the family. Zachary’s tumour turned out to be benign and Henry’s cardiologists told the family they won’t need to check on his heart for about six months. “We were pretty thrilled, Miranda said. “Prior to that, we were there every month, so that was pretty great. The Vancouver visits will continue, however, even if the cardiologist gets a miss for the time being. Miranda said the family is planning on having Henry genetically tested in 2015, to determine if he may have DiGeorge syndrome, which often results in similar heart conditions. A recent emergency-room visit for a cold led to another discovery pointing the family toward a genetic cause — Henry is missing an uvula, which normally dangles off the back of the soft palate. “He’s doing great and we’re thrilled, but new things pop up and throw us for a loop here and there, Miranda said.

SIX TAKEN TO HOSPITAL AFTER CHRISTMAS DAY ACCIDENT

Aberdeen
Veterinary Hospital
SUV LEFT ROAD BETWEEN CITY AND SUN PEAKS An SUV with poor tread on its winter tires left the road linking Kamloops to Sun Peaks Resort and rolled down a steep, 100foot embankment on Christmas Day, sending six people to Royal Inland Hospital. Three of those injured were reported to be in serious condition. Kamloops Rural RCMP Staff Sgt. Doug Aird said the 2010 Lexus SUV was being driven by a Surrey resident westbound on HeffleyLouis Creek Road at 11:40 a.m. when it left the road coming out of a turn.
Aird said the Lexus crossed the centre line sideways and went down the steep embankment, rolling once before it came to a rest with its roof against a tree. Paramedics and firefighters removed two occupants on spine boards. The female driver, who is the mother of the teens in the vehicle, received serious pelvic injuries. Two passengers received internal and facial injuries. Al three are listed in serious condition. Aird said two of the teenaged passengers
received bruising and bumps to their head and injuries to their necks consistent with seatbelt use. “Airbags both in the front and on the side windows no doubt played a huge role in preventing more catastrophic injuries,” Aird said. Cause of the collision is under investigation. Aird said roads were wet with some gravel and were in good driving condition at the time of the collision, adding police did note the Lexus’s winter tires were at less than one-quarter tread.
Propane tank focus in probe TIM PETRUK
STAFF REPORTER

Investigators this week will examine a propane tank at the centre of a hotdog-stand explosion on the weekend that sent two people to hospital. Kamloops Fire Rescue Assistant Chief Jeff Bell said local fire investigators and a team from the B.C. Safety Authority (BCSA) were expected to scrutinize the tank yesterday (Dec. 29). “I did talk with the owner of the hotdog cart and he’s OK,” Bell said. “He’s not injured too bad.”
Two people, including the hotdog stand’s owner, were taken to Royal Inland Hospital by ambulance on Saturday, Dec. 27, following the explosion outside the Aberdeen Canadian Tire store. Investigators believe the hotdog stand’s propane tank caused the explosion. “The B.C. Safety Authority is working with the Kamloops fire department to investigate the cause of the explosion,” BCSA spokesman Quinn Newcomb told KTW. “But, the Kamloops fire department is the lead investigator.” Newcomb said the BCSA is called in anytime there is a serious incident in B.C. involving propane gas.
Resident helps find stolen vehicle An eagle-eyed Kamloops resident is to thank for the recovery of a stolen vehicle — and the arrest of a suspect — on the weekend. Police were called to the Pineview Valley area just after 10 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 28, after a resident in the area spotted a suspicious, unoccupied vehicle. With the help of a policeservice dog, Mounties tracked down a 24-year-old prolific offender in the area. He was arrested and held for court.
The suspect will likely face charges of possession of stolen property and breach of probation. The vehicle had been stolen from the downtown core earlier in the day. The investigation is ongoing. A man and woman from Alberta were arrested at the Greyhound bus depot in Kamloops on Christmas Eve when Mounties seized a sawed-off, 12-gauge shotgun from a duffel bag they were carrying.
Kamloops RCMP Sgt. Michael Buxton said police were tipped off that the couple may have been travelling with the weapon. Buxton said police do not believe the couple had planned to threaten or harm anyone at the bus depot. A 28-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman were scheduled to appear before a justice of the peace on charges of possession of a prohibited weapon and breach of a recognizance.

Mounties seek burglars who targeted Savona post office Police are hoping tips from the public will help them track down
the Christmastime grinches who stole parcels from the Savona post office.
Kamloops Rural RCMP were called to the post office in the small com-

Investigators believe the building was broken into overnight between Sunday
and Monday, with those responsible making off with about 20 parcels.
Shelter for homeless on cold nights
Give yourself exactly what you wanted.
From A1
The temperature last night (Dec. 29) was forecast to dip to -20 C with the wind chill, due to gusts of up to 50 km/h. Today’s high is expected to be -10 C, while tomorrow’s high is forecast to be -7 C. Seibel is the Kamloops representative designated to issue an extreme-weather alert, which “activates the authorities in the Assistance to Shelter Act for police to assist persons at risk due to extreme weather conditions and remains in effect until it is cancelled,” as explained in an alert he sent out on the weekend. Through the alert system, the CMHA works with the RCMP and a variety of other social agencies to talk to the homeless outside at night to ensure they find shelter. On the weekend, Eden said, that meant two extra people in Emerald Centre. The CMHA is also working with the Out of the Cold program being run at St. Paul’s Anglican Cathedral, at 360 Nicola St. Funded by BC Housing, it is only open on Wednesdays and can provide shelter for 25 people. Seibel said his staff has been working closely with the board and volunteers who run the program.

AN EXTREME WAY TO LIVE FOR MANY To most of us, it is a standard cold snap, with the mercury dipping into the minus teens last night and tonight. We shiver as we leave the house or the car for those few seconds it takes to find warmth in the next building in our day-to-day lives. However, to those who live on the streets of Kamloops, such a standard cold snap can be deadly, especially when the Arctic air is accompanied by a biting wind that brings nothing but pain to those without a roof over their heads. While the people operating shelters in Kamloops are once again doing all they can to protect the less fortunate from Old Man Winter, there will always be those on the street and in the parks, fighting to outlast the deep freeze. While government funding helps the Emerald Centre provide refuge at its West Victoria Street shelter, that funding is no longer available for St. Paul’s Anglican Cathedral to use as part of its Out of the Cold program. The church at 360 Nicola St. operates its Out of the Cold Program on Wednesdays, when the homeless can escape the winter conditions and get warm. However, funding that allowed the church last year to open doors during cold-weather alerts (any time the mercury drops to -7 C) is not there this year. The church — and many other groups — will continue to do what it can to extend a hand to those who need to grasp some fingers, if only for a few hours. In the meantime, perhaps now is a good time for all of us to review our priorities. A recent poll by Insights West found 60 per cent of British Columbians and Albertans said helping the less fortunate is an important part of the holiday season. New Year’s Day is two days away — what better resolution that to vow to help one more person than you did in 2014?

Year of climate adaptation
I
t’s time to look beyond the protests and political battles around climate change that dominated 2014 and look at the year and the decade ahead. From the California drought to shifting forest patterns across B.C., there is evidence our climate is changing more rapidly. Public debate consists mainly of squabbling about the significance of human-caused greenhouse-gas emissions, rather than what can be done to prepare. A draft discussion paper on wildlife control from the B.C. forests ministry was released in December after an access to information request. Climate Change Adaptation and Action Plan For Wildfire Management, 2014-2024 describes the progress made in the province’s community forestfire prevention plan and its goal to create “wildfire resilient ecosystems and wildfire adapted communities” over the next 10 years. The final discussion paper is to be released in early 2015, but the key research is in. It estimates that by 2017, there will be 788-million cubic metres of dead pine in B.C. forests. Fires in these areas spread 2.6 times faster than in healthy green stands, up to 66 metres per minute. The report calls for fuel management beyond community boundaries to stop mega-fires by creating landscape-level fuel breaks, with targeted harvesting, prescribed burning and new silviculture practices.
TOM FLETCHER
Our Man In
VICTORIA It notes bark-beetle infestations and bigger, hotter fires are being seen across North America, with costs rising. For example, the 2011 Slave Lake fire in northern Alberta generated the second-largest insurance charge in Canadian history. The costs of preparing are huge. The costs of not preparing could be catastrophic. Also in 2014, the B.C. government appointed an advisory committee to prepare for the renewal of the Columbia River Treaty with the United States. The treaty’s flood-control mandate expires in 2024. I spoke with Deborah Harford and Jon O’Riordan, members of the Simon Fraser University Adaptation to Climate Change Team (ACT), who, along with ACT senior policy author Robert Sandford, have written a provocative book on the treaty. They hope it will help lead to a renewed agreement that will be a model for a changing world. “If you’re looking ahead 60 years from 2024, there’s a lot of
climate change projected in that period — for British Columbia and the U.S.,” Harford said. “For the B.C. side, we’re looking at heavy precipitation and potential increase in snowmelt runoff, while in the States, you’re getting the opposite — much less snow. There will probably be no snowpack left down there and they’re looking at the prospect of quite drastically lower flows in the summer.” The treaty, sparked by devastating floods in 1948, led to construction of three dams on the B.C. side and one at Libby, Wash., that backed up Kookanusa Lake into B.C. Between that reservoir and the Arrow Lakes, 110,000 hectares of B.C. land was flooded, including orchards, dairy farms and the homes of 2,000 people. Those dams hold back spring flood water and provide for irrigation that has allowed Washington to expand its agriculture to a $5 billion-a-year industry. The treaty shares the value of hydroelectric power generated by the many downstream U.S. dams, such as the Grand Coulee, but it pays B.C. nothing for agricultural benefits that were achieved at the cost of B.C. farms and aboriginal territories. O’Riordan notes climate shifts create a strategic benefit for B.C. The U.S. has no more dam capacity to exploit and needs us more than ever — for flood protection and water supply. tfletcher@blackpress.ca

YOUR OPINION LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
REPORT SEEMS BIASED AGAINST KINDER MORGAN Editor: Re: KTW’s front-page story of Dec. 16 (‘Reduced health outcomes from pipeline twinning?’): It would seem City of Kamloops environmental-services supervisor Allan Michener was more than a little prejudiced against Kinder Morgan’s proposed pipeline expansion in his report. He spells out the evils of hundreds of workers coming to our city and filling up hotels and rentals, as if this would be a bad thing. Michener also says that would over-burden Royal Inland Hospital and medical facilities,
resulting in reduced health outcomes to our residents. Does he have precedent for these statements or is he speaking from his pre-conceived ideas? He also expresses concern for tournament and tourist accommodation in the summer, but fails to comment that workers would be here far longer than just the summer, resulting in a large boost to our local economy. I agree there is a lot of information required regarding the plan to affect the installation and I am sure Kinder Morgan will be held to a high standard by our city council
to ensure everything is accounted for in a satisfactory manner. In passing, Michener mentions tax revenue would be approximately $750,000, but fails to say this would be annually. I am sure we are reading only a portion of this report in KTW, but it seems to me more information should come from your office and/or council to help us see both sides of this expansion. As Michener is employed by the city, he should be held to report completely and fairly. Bob Iverson Kamloops
TELLING THE TALE OF A CARING, GIVING COMMUNITY Editor: Once upon a time, there was a family that needed some community support to rebuild after unexpected tragedy struck. It was a spectacular sight to witness the heart of the people who got involved. The Thompson Rivers University community generously donated money and other needed items in
support of this family. The local rural community, which is familiar with the family’s needs, rallied as well and made extremely generous donations. When a tired car was donated, but needed some work and safe winter tires, the larger Kamloops business community got involved. Lordco generously donated the necessary vehicle parts,
Kamloops Kia quickly offered to do the service work gratis and Kal Tire didn’t even think twice about donating appropriate winter tires. No one wanted the publicity or to be acknowledged, but how fantastically inspiring it was to see how giving the TRU community, and the larger Kamloops populace, is. I suspect, however, KTW readers are already aware of the kind
and generous people among whom we live and work. Thank you, Kamloops, for demonstrating once again your true and generous nature — not just at Christmas, but year-round and through all types of circumstance. You truly made a difference to a family that needed it. Ronda Olds Kamloops
GRATITIUDE FOR A RESCUE AND A NOD TO KTW READERS Editor: My sincere thanks to the two kind gentlemen who stopped to help when I fell on Lorne Street on the morning of Dec. 5. Thank you to Morgan, who drove me to my doctor and helped me into the buiding. Your kindness is appreciated.
Editor: From the bottom of our hearts, we want to say a sincere thank you to the people to whom we deliver Kamloops This Week papers three times per week.

Six people have been charged in relation to a Boxing Day doublehomicide in Anahim Lake, which is about 300 kilometres west of Williams Lake. RCMP Cpl. Dave Tyreman said the charges relate to the shooting deaths of 23-year-old Matthew Hennigar and 22-yearold Kalvin Andy, who were found dead on Dec. 26. Everett O’Reilly, 27, is facing one count of first-degree murder, while Christian Craciun, 28, Andrew Jongbloets, 25, and Serena Rhem, 26, are each charged with second-degree murder. Lucille Mack, 33, and Stephen Mecham, 22, are facing charges of manslaughter. Investigators are still trying to determine what led to the deaths. Anyone with information is asked to call the Anahim Lake RCMP detachment at 250-7423211 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
No new cases of avian flu in B.C. While it’s been more than 10 days since the last case of avian influenza reported in the Fraser Valley, it’s too soon to call the outbreak over, according to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). The last confirmed case at a commercial farm was on Dec. 17 in Langley. There, 11,800 chickens had to be euthanized, putting the total number of birds affected at 245,600. Two days later a non-commercial backyard farm with 85 ducks, chickens, geese and turkeys in Aldergrove confirmed positive for the virus. “It would be premature to declare the disease outbreak over at this time,” a CFIA spokesman said. “The CFIA is continuously gathering information and assessing the situation to determine the next steps.” No commercial farms have been hit, but the virus did also strike south of the border as ducks tested positive in Lynden, Wash.,

For Ernie Beadle, Barry Deacon and Bryan Daly, Boxing Day was the start of an adventure more than a year in the making. Instead of heading to the mall or filling up on Christmas leftovers, the trio was on a plane bound for Buenos Ares, Argentina. From there, they will head for the southernmost tip of South America before beginning — a three-month trek back to Kamloops via motorcycle. “We’ll dip our feet in the ocean and work our way back on our bikes, enjoy the cultures and see the scenery and enjoy the ride,” Beadle said. Beadle and Daly already have a similar trek under their belts — though in the opposite direction. The pair was part of a group of Kamloops riders that
headed to Alaska in 2012. That trip inspired Daly to start planning an even bigger venture. Though various travel companies run similar motorcycle trips up the length of South America, Daly said riding all the way to Canada isn’t so common. “I think we’re going to run across it all,” he said. “We’ve got a combination of easy riding, straight pavement, lots of twisty roads, lots of mountain passes, lots of dirt roads. It’s the entire experience in terms of riding.” In preparation for the trip, the trio packed everything from camping gear — they’ll spend much of the trip roughing it — to repair equipment, tow ropes and satellite communicators. “We all want to be ready for anything,” Daly said. “You’ve got to think of how remote we might be at some points — and how difficult it might be to get help.
Hospice House beneficiary of trip Ernie Beadle, Barry Deacon and Bryan Daly have taken the personal challenge and turned it into a fundraiser event for the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Memorial Hospice Home in Kamloops. The hospice in Sahali is a place for people to go to spend the remaining days of their lives. It gets them out of the hospital environment and into a comfortable, home-like setting. “I have personally had four friends go through there over the last number of years, and will no doubt have more to come in the future, and we all felt there is no better cause that we know of right now — and one that touches all of our hearts,” Beadle said. The trio will be working to raise money for the hospice by having people donate on the website (motociclistasamigos.wordpress. com), which should be able to
accept donations in mid-January. Also, the hospice’s annual fundraising event on April 17 has been moved to the Coast Kamloops Hotel and Conference Centre to accommodate more people. The goal is to sell 550 tickets to the event, with the hospice set to notify existing participants so they get first dibs on the original 360 tickets that constituted a sellout at the former Colombo Lodge location. Tickets prices for the event have not been confirmed, but will probably be set at $100 and for sale in March. More information will be in Kamloops This Week and online at kamloopsthisweek.com and at motociclistasamigos.wordpress.com in the coming weeks. The plan is to have the three amigos attend with their motorcycles. They also plan to screen a video and a slideshow of their trip.
While the idea for the trip started as an adventure for the three men, more than 16 months of planning has led to a charitable component. Beadle hopes the ride will raise funds for the Kamloops Hospice Association, which hosts an annual fundraising banquet in April, not long after the trio is expected to arrive back on Canadian soil. “It is such a fabulous place for one’s last days and all of us have known or had family or friends go through there,” Beadle said of the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Memorial Hospice Home in Sahali. As they make their way from South America to Kamloops, Beadle, Daly and Deacon will solicit donations for the hospice on their blog, motociclistasamigos.wordpress.com, before hosting a special presentation about their trip at the foundation’s dinner and dance on April 17 at the Coast Kamloops Hotel and Conference Centre.
Hop on and follow the ride Kamloops This Week will follow the trio’s adventures as they ride their bikes north to Kamloops from Argentina. KTW will publish in our newspaper and online at kamloopsthisweek.com updates as the journey continues. The trio is already blogging at motociclistasamigos.wordpress.com. Here is the Dec. 27 entry: “Arrived in Buenos Aires, 28 degrees, interesting on the boulevard/ road from the airport, everywhere there was a tree, there was a family car — family and kids out playing. We all commented on it, then a little further down the road we realized why. Mostly tall thin, very small apartment blocks.”

Dew Tour returning to Sun Peaks Resort Sun Peaks Resort is welcoming back the Dew Tour Am Series, North America’s premier amateur ski and snowboard competition, on March 27 and March 28. The two-day competition will feature a new big-air contest as well as the signature slopestyle event. With a cash purse of $30,000, many of the top amateur athletes on the continent will be in Sun Peaks’ terrain park throwing down their best tricks. Fans looking to get in on the action are encouraged to stop by all weekend for professional athlete meetand-greets, Mountain Dew sampling, prizing, live DJs and more. Spectators will be able to watch the competition from the base of the Sundance chairlift. “We’re incredibly excited to be back at Sun Peaks, especially with the addition of the big-air competition,” said Neetu Godara, marketing director for Mountain Dew Canada.
“Canada is stacked with amateur ski and snowboard talent and we’re proud to be able to give them the tools they need to elevate their performance.” Athletes will also be competing for points on the Association of Freeskiing Professional circuit and the World Snowboard Tour. The slopestyle event will be a jam format with $20,000 in prize money and the single best trick will win the Big Air competition prize of $10,000. Both purses will be split equally between the men’s and women’s categories. Ten per cent of the athletes will be invited and the remaining 90 per cent will sign up independently. “This was one of our most highly animated
and exciting weekends last winter and we are looking forward to partnering with Mountain Dew once again,” said Aidan Kelly, director of sales and marketing for Sun Peaks Resort Corporation. “Sun Peaks’ terrain park is a great venue to showcase Canada’s best emerging freestyle ski and snowboard talent. Plus, the free concert and other Mountain Dew events around the village are a great addition for all our guests in the resort.”

tunity to be the head coach of the Chicago Bears,’’ Trestman said in a statement released by the team. “I also want to thank all the coaches and players who gave us everything we asked over the past two years. I have tremendous respect for this organization.’’ Trestman found couldn’t duplicate the success he enjoyed in the CFL with the Bears. Trestman was head coach of the Montreal Alouettes for five seasons before joining Chicago. He led the Alouettes to back-toback Grey Cup titles in 2009 and 2010. This was certainly not what the Bears envisioned with a prolific offence returning intact and a rebuilt defence in tow. But, little went right for Chicago this season. There were distractions throughout the year, whether it was linebacker Lance Briggs being allowed to miss practice to open a restaurant in California the week of the opener or offensive co-ordinator Aaron Kromer admitting he was the NFL Network’s source behind a critical report of Cutler late in the season. Trestman, who was hired to get the most out of Cutler, decided the team needed a spark even with the Bears out of contention, so he benched the highly paid quarterback in favour of Jimmy Clausen for the second-to-last game of the season against Detroit. Cutler wound up starting the final game after Clausen suffered a concussion against the Lions, add-

ing another chapter to a season-long soap opera. Trestman also surprised some by allowing star receiver Brandon Marshall to fly to New York on a weekly basis to record Showtime’s “Inside the NFL.’’ Marshall, who is open about his struggles with borderline personality disorder, had an off year and at one point gave a rambling news conference over past allegations of domestic abuse. He also challenged a Detroit fan on Twitter to a boxing match for charity, and reporters standing in the hallway overheard him screaming in the locker room after a loss to Miami at Soldier Field in October that raised all sorts of questions about where the team was headed. Trestman wasn’t the only NFL head coach fired on Monday. The Atlanta Falcons jettisoned Mike Smith, the New York Jets dismissed Rex Ryan and the San Francisco 49ers and Jim Harbaugh parted ways. Harbaugh will become the next head coach of the Michigan Wolverines. There are still questions surrounding the head coaching positions in both Oakland and Buffalo. Tony Sparano finished the season as the interim head coach with the Raiders and is expected to be interviewed for the full-time position. Doug Marrone guided the Bills to a 9-7 record, their first winning season since 2004, but new ownership clouds the picture.
STEPHEN WHYNO
THE CANADIAN PRESS
TORONTO — Just before leaving his final news conference at the Sochi Olympics, Canadian hockey coach Mike Babcock made one final statement to reporters about the team’s methodical run to gold. “Does anybody know who won the scoring race? Does anybody care?’’ Babcock asked. “Does anybody know who won the gold medal?’’ Going undefeated through the tournament in February, Babcock’s group lived up to and surpassed the expectations and pressure created after the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, where Canada also captured the gold. “The 2010 team, we won, we got it done, and that was a special, special team, too, and it faced a different kind of pressure,’’ Babcock said in a recent interview. “This (2014) team was machine-like. It just was going to win, period.’’ Team Canada rolled over Norway and Austria and beat Finland in overtime in pool play. It overcame a superhuman effort from goaltender Kristers Gudlevskis to beat Latvia in the quarter-finals, then dominated the United States and Sweden to capture the gold medal for the third time in the past four Olympics. That was more than enough to earn the Canadian Press Team of the Year honours for 2014, as voted by sports editors and broadcasters across the country. The men’s hockey team was a runaway winner, receiving 36 votes, well ahead of 10 for the women’s bobsled duo of Kaillie Humphries and Heather Moyse and nine for the women’s Olympic hockey team. “The Olympic men’s hockey team was the best Canada has ever fielded,’’ said Sean Rooney, sports editor at the Medicine Hat News. “It wasn’t that they had more talent, it’s that they played a disciplined style of game that took advantage of the talent they had.’’ This group wasn’t short on talent. Up front, there was Sidney Crosby, Jonathan Toews, Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry and enough depth that Team Canada didn’t miss a beat when John Tavares went out with a knee
injury. On the blue-line, Shea Weber and Drew Doughty were the leading scorers as defencemen carried the offence. Team Canada outscored opponents 17-3, but its most convincing victory may have been a 1-0 victory over the U.S. in the semifinals. “I don’t think the scores of the games were indicative,’’ general manager Steve Yzerman said. “I think our team played better than the scores. Defensively they were very, very good. Offensively they generated a ton of chances, just weren’t able to get more pucks in the net.’’ Better than any team in recent Olympic history, this group was masterful at keeping the puck. As Babcock said, the other team can’t score if it doesn’t have the puck. When opponents did get it, goaltender Carey Price was there. In his five games, Price had a 0.59 goalsagainst average and .972 save percentage. “He gave us confidence every time he was in the net,’’ Babcock said. “He never got the other team going by giving up a rebound or giving up a bad goal. He was just steady Eddie and he seemed to really enjoy it and embrace the moment. I thought he was spectacular.’’ Just about everything Team Canada did was spectacular, starting with ball hockey at its summer orientation camp through a 3-0 rout of Sweden in the final. There was strife along the way, including Steven Stamkos breaking his leg and Martin St. Louis being left off the initial roster before replacing his Tampa Bay Lightning teammate. But none of that stopped Team Canada, which Yzerman meticulously designed to get the job done on the same international-sized ice that felled the Canadians in 2006. “[Yzerman] gave me all the reasons why we were going to be that much better than we were in Vancouver,’’ former Hockey Canada president and CEO Bob Nicholson said. “Everything that he talked about that day, he did it in spades with the management group and with Mike Babcock.” Tennis stars Milos Raonic and Eugenie Bouchard captured the male and female athlete of the year honours for 2014.

Too many festivities spoiled by drunk driving. We all spend a lot of time organizing the perfect holiday party. Unfortunately, too many of these festivities are spoiled every year by the effects of drunk driving. Over the Christmas period, road accidents caused by this scourge are numerous as are the police road blocks which lead to a multitude of arrests for the same reason. Everyone deplores the thousands of deaths caused by drunk driving which occur every year in this country. The number of these dramas increase exponentially during the Christmas holidays when more visiting takes place and the opportunities of taking one glass too many increase. And this doesn’t even take into account the fact that drivers must deal with sometimes difficult, winter road conditions. Arrests for drunk driving also have many unpleasant consequences long after the pleasant fog of alcohol has disappeared.

Windsor Plywood has been in Kamloops serving the building supply needs of our community since 1972. We are located at 735 Laval Crescent. We are a little bit different than your average “Lumber Yard. Although we have all the usual items found in a lumber yard-2x4’s and plywood- we have certain niches that other building supply stores do not. One of our niches is our knowledge on building supply products and their sources. If a product is made of Wood chances are we have it, know about it, or can source it for you-

t’s fair to say Ben Dextraze always knew his future would include the stage. The South Kamloops secondary graduate did plenty of acting while in high school, then headed
to Thompson Rivers University to study theatre and English. While at TRU, he was also the arts editor for the student newspaper Omega and hosted a radio show

on the campus station CFBX. And, now? After moving to Edmonton, Dextraze expanded his artistic side, with freelance writing, videography
and web television. That means a few commercial gigs for the actor side of him, but also creation of Iconochasm Media, which is producing a series of videos for the University Alberta. In his spare time — if there is any — he’s also working on a reality boxing series airing on Shaw Cable
in Edmonton. Add in a recent marriage, a joy of travelling and Dextraze keeps himself busy. “I can honestly say hard work pays off,” he said. “But, if I could, I’d trade it all for an endless Kamloops summer. “Well, and lots of powder days at the Peaks, too.”
Play competition deadline tomorrow Theatre BC is calling for submissions before the end of the year for its annual provincial playwriting competition. The group behind Destination Mainstage, a community theatre competition that came to Kamloops last summer, is awarding money for original drama or comedy scripts. Independent jurors will decide the winners and grant $1,000 for a full-length script, $750 for one-act and $500 for a script of special merit. A non-refundable entry fee of $75 is required to apply, which is reduced to $50 for Theatre BC members. The deadline is tomorrow (Dec. 31). For the full list of rules and to apply, go online to theatric. org/playwriting-competition/.

ò Obituaries & In Memoriam ô SANDRA WALTERS (nee McDonnell) March 3, 1958 – December 21, 2014
It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Sandy. While surrounded by her loving family, Sandy passed into the arms of our Heavenly Father on December 21, 2014. Sandy fought a victorious battle with pancreatic cancer in 2008, only to have it return earlier this year. Her positive and unyielding attitude was an inspiration to all who knew her. She fought a courageous battle right to the end. Sandy is survived by her soul mate and loving husband Mark and companion Joey. Also left to mourn Sandy’s passing are her father Terry McDonnell, sisters Trish (Robert) Thellend, Carole (Brian) Popp, brother Jamie (Colleen) as well as numerous relatives and Mark’s family, mother Liz, sister Karen (Scott) Beacom, brothers Dave, Paul (Darla) and Mike (Shannon). Sandy was predeceased by her mother Elaine in 2004 and brother Greg in 2005. The family would like to thank Dr. Scudamore, Dr. Proctor and Dr. Ferran and the incredible staff at Kamloops Hospice for the compassionate and loving care given to Sandy throughout her battle. Sandy did not wish to have a formal service and in keeping with her wishes, a private family Roman Catholic Memorial Service was held on December 29, 2014, officiated by Father Fred Weisbeck. A celebration of life for the many friends and acquaintances who knew Sandy will be announced at a later date. LARRY BAKKEN The Bakken family mourns the passing of our husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, Larry Bakken on December 25, 2014. Larry was born on August 26, 1924 in Lintlaw, Saskatchewan and recently celebrated his 90th birthday with his family. Larry had great pleasure in telling his friends that he went to 14 schools in three provinces in 12 years. His last three years were spent attending King Edward High School in Vancouver. Upon graduation Larry joined the Canadian Army and served in the Royal Canadian Regiment. He was shipped Overseas and soon saw action in Italy where he was wounded crossing the Naviglio River. As soon as Larry recovered he was shipped to Holland where his Regiment helped liberate the city of Apeldoorn. Larry proudly traveled back to Apeldoorn to celebrate the 40th, 45th & 50th anniversaries of the Liberation of Holland. Larry was an avid military collector throughout his years and a member of the Military Collector’s Club of Canada. Upon his return from Overseas, he went to Chase to spend time with his mother, Thelma Quinton. The town of Chase put on a dance for the returning Veterans and it was there that Larry met Jenny Larson, with whom he was to spend the next 66 years. Larry and Jenny moved to Forest Grove where they lived for 49 years and were in the Sawmill
and Logging business. It was there that their three children, Dennis, Vicki and Lori were born. Larry was very involved with the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 261 and was a proud Charter and Life Member. Larry was heavily involved in working and volunteering to help make his community a better place for others. In 1990 Larry and Jenny moved to Kamloops where they have enjoyed their years and made many friends. During their retirement, they spent 25 years in the sun in Arizona and Mexico and made many trips overseas. Larry was also a life member of the Kamloops Old Time Fiddlers. Larry was predeceased by his daughter Vicki and son-in-law, Andy and his brother Vince. Larry is survived by his son Dennis (Tegwyn), daughter Lori (Ole), grandchildren, Jennifer, Kelly, Matthew, Curtis, Jacey, Mitchell and Megan and great-grandchildren Talia, Ashton, Elliot and Isla. Our family would like to extend our thanks to Dr. Bruce Newmarch. As well as to the caregivers of Ridgeview Lodge (Orchard) for their compassionate care they gave to Larry. A special thank you to Marianne, Danielle, Anneli and Jennica of the Home First program- what would we have done without you? In memory of Larry, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of BC, 405-235 1st Ave, Kamloops, V2C 3J4. “With hope that there may someday be a cure” Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. The years may wipe out many things, But this they’ll wipe out never The memory of the bygone days When we were both together. (Anonymous)

RUTH SUMMERS-KAATZ We are saddened to announce the recent passing of our dear mom, Ruth Summers-Kaatz in Kamloops. Ruth died peacefully at the age of 91, in the presence of her loving family. Ruth is survived by her three children, Jerry (Sharon) and Judy Summers and Gay Rudichuk, as well as her two sisters Barbara (Bob) Steele of Barriere and Inez Tingley (USA). As well, Ruth has nine adoring grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins throughout Canada. Ruth was predeceased by her late husband Elmer Kaatz, grand-daughter Natasha Rudichuk, and first husband David Summers. A highly respected Kamloops musician, Ruth enjoyed many years performing as a singer with various church choirs such as that of Mt. Paul United. As well, she became a wellregarded soloist for special occasions, including providing piano and vocal entertainment at the Canadian Inn and other venues around the province. Most recently, Ruth Summers-Kaatz performed in Seniors’ residences with the Golden Serenaders band. Many will also remember her years as the superb pianist with The Nuggets Dance Band. In a recent interview, Ruth exclaimed that “…we had a piano, and as long as I had music, the world was right!” We know that our mom is happily singing in a celestial choir or continuing to play in a wonderful band somewhere. A celebration of her life will be announced at a later date this spring. Donations may be made to the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra in her name. www.kamloopssymphony.com/ Online condolences may be expressed at www.schoeningfuneralservice.com Schoenings Funeral Service 250-374-1454

If Tomorrow Never Comes If I knew it would be the last time That I’d see you fall asleep, I would tuck you in more tightly and pray the Lord, your soul to keep. If I knew it would be the last time that I see you walk out the door, I would give you a hug and kiss and call you back for one more. If I knew it would be the last time I’d hear your voice lifted up in praise, I would video tape each action and word, so I could play them back day after day. If I knew it would be the last time, I could spare an extra minute to stop and say “I love you,” instead of assuming you would KNOW I do. If I knew it would be the last time I would be there to share your day, Well I’m sure you’ll have so many more, so I can let just this one slip away. For surely there’s always tomorrow to make up for an oversight, and we always get a second chance to make everything just right. There will always be another day to say “I love you,” And certainly there’s another chance to say our “Anything I can do?”
But just in case I might be wrong, and today is all I get, I’d like to say how much I love you and I hope we never forget. Tomorrow is not promised to anyone, young or old alike, And today may be the last chance you get to hold your loved one tight. So if you’re waiting for tomorrow, why not do it today? For if tomorrow never comes, you’ll surely regret the day, That you didn’t take that extra time for a smile, a hug, or a kiss and you were too busy to grant someone, what turned out to be their one last wish. So hold your loved ones close today, and whisper in their ear, Tell them how much you love them and that you’ll always hold them dear Take time to say “I’m sorry,” “Please forgive me,” “Thank you,” or “It’s okay.” And if tomorrow never comes, you’ll have no regrets about today. © Norma Cornett Marek ~ 1989

1972 Lancia Stratos HF
The Lancia Stratos HF is a monster of a car. In the concept stages, the Stratos was an attempt by Bertone to get its foot in with Lancia, which had previously worked with Pinin Farina for design. The legend states that Bertone rebodied a Lancia Fulvia and drove it to Lancia’s headquarters. Impressed with the Stratos prototype, Lancia agreed to collaborate with Bertone to create their next generation rally car. The Stratos was built around a Lancia chassis, with a Ferrari Dino engine positioned behind the seats. The rolling chassis was finished off with an aerodynamic body fitted by Bertone. The Lancia would go on to have a legendary career, winning the World Rally Championship from 1974 to 1976.

exclusively for Europe and Australia, but have you ever heard of an African performance car? Meet the Chevrolet Firenza Can Am, a Euro-American mashup that was never sold in either of those markets. Built to compete with Ford’s inferior Capri Perana, the Can Am began in Britain as a Vauxhall Firenza frame, which was then shipped straight south to Port Elizabeth,
South Africa, where it was paired with a power train straight out of an American legend — the 1969 Camaro Z/28. With a lightweight body and nearly 300 horsepower, the smell of burning rubber was a no-cost option — and I’m sure there was plenty of that. The car was limited to a run of 100, which were built to satisfy homologation requirements for Argus Production Car series,
30 of which are still known to exist.
1969 Ford Escort RS1600
While the latter part of the 1960s might have been the middle of the Mustang’s heyday, Ford was busy building fast cars all around the world. One of those cars was Ford’s venerable Escort, which was one of the top-selling cars in Europe at the time. Of course, Ford engineers weren’t satis-
fied with a compact coupe with 1.3-litre engine, so they contacted Cosworth and developed the Escort RS1600. While the Cosworth engine may have put out only 113 horsepower, the tiny Escort was barely tipping the scales at 1,800 pounds, making the RS1600 one of the coolest cars cruising the UK at the time.
1969 Nissan Skyline GT-R The Nissan Skyline
GT-R is arguably the most iconic sports car to ever come from the islands of Japan. While the GT-R is most commonly idolized in its mid-1990s guise from the Fast and Furious franchise, our pick is the original — the 1969 Skyline GT-R. Introduced at the 1969 Tokyo Auto Show, the GT-R was a Nissan Skyline sedan stripped out and given special treatment by the boys in the Nissan Skunks Works team. The heart of the
The Porsche 959 is the perfect example of what happens when the German mad scientists behind Porsche decided the 911 Turbo just wasn’t quite enough. Built to be the ultimate Group B rally car, Porsche decided to slap an all-wheel drive system and a twinturbo 2.8-litre boxer engine in a highly modified 911. In order to fulfil the FIA’s homologation rule, Porsche built 337 examples for consumption by the public. Of course, the EPA and Porsche weren’t quite on the same page and the 959 was never legally sold in the U.S. However, several examples of the 959 have made their ways to our shores, most notably the Gates 959, which was stored by U.S. Customs for 13 years and was key in the passing of the show and display law.

Woman, child Canadian man among those rescued from burning Greek ferry missing after fire STEPHANIE LEVITZ
THE CANADIAN PRESS
OTTAWA — A Canadian is among hundreds of people saved in a dramatic rescue at sea after a fire on board a ferry travelling between Greece and Italy. A spokesperson for the Foreign Affairs Department says they are aware of a Canadian who was on board the Norman Atlantic when it caught fire Sunday, Dec. 28, and has now been rescued. But, the government isn’t releasing any further information. A spokesperson at the Greek embassy in Ottawa said earlier Monday that one Canadian, identified as N. Pejcinovksi, was
listed among the 422 passengers and 56 crew on the ship’s manifest but his whereabouts were unknown. The fire broke out before dawn Sunday on a car deck of the Italian-flagged Norman Atlantic on a journey from the Greek port of Patras to Ancona in Italy. At least 10 people died. Fighting high winds and stormy seas, rescue crews on Monday completed evacuating 427 people from the boat as survivors told of a frantic rush to escape, caught among flames, pelting rain and passengers who fought others for rescue. One Greek man died on Sunday while trying to get into a lifeboat with his wife, who
survived. Four other bodies were recovered from the sea on Monday. The circumstances and identities of the other three fatalities are unknown. The search in the Adriatic Sea for others continues amid serious discrepancies in the ship’s manifest, which contained 478 names. The original ferry manifest listed 422 passengers and 56 crew members, but an Italian official said 80 of those rescued did not appear on it at all. Canadian foreign affairs spokesperson Caitlin Workman said no further information is being released on the rescued Canadian for privacy reasons.
Mounties say two people, including a child, are unaccounted for following a house fire on a Saskatchewan reserve yesterday (Dec. 29). RCMP say there were initial reports that four people were trapped inside the burning home on Ahtahkakoop First Nation. Two men made it out of the home, but it’s believed a 10-year-old boy and 61-year-old woman were still inside. No names have been released. Police say the house

Air Canada flight diverted to Toronto
An Air Canada flight from Calgary to London, England, diverted to Toronto yes-
terday (Dec. 29) after a “slight electrical smell’’ was detected in the cabin. The airline said Flight AC850 landed safely in Toronto “strictly out of an abundance of caution.’’ Spokesman Peter Fitzpatrick said the 201 passengers on the Boeing 767 changed aircraft in Toronto before continuing on to London.
