Make the most out of the big day A few tips can go a long way Prepare a wedding day kit
Anything can happen and to lessen the disaster of an ill-fitting garter or a drink spilled on a dress. Be prepared for the unexpected. Here are some recommended items to keep handy: • Sunscreen • Bobby pins • Pens and paper • Travel sewing kit • Lip balm • Hairbrush • Safety pins • Hairspray • Tape • Mouthwash • Super glue • Tide to-go • Scissors • Lighter • Gravol • Deodorant • Kleenex • Hand sanitizer • Tampons • Band-Aids • Vendor list • Advil • Toothbrush and toothpaste
Consider the weather
If you’re having an outdoor wedding, consider including a tent rental, which will cover you in rain or shine. Another thing to consider is using makeup with SPF to avoid unwanted over-exposure during the course of the day.
Published by KAMLOOPS THIS WEEK
Organize a vendor list
Write down the list of names and numbers of important people. This has been a popular idea on Pinterest, but it is something everyone should do. Make sure this list is in your wedding day kit for reference and your point of contact has this list as who should be. Here are a few people who should be on the list: • Florist • Venue contact • Bakery/caterer • DJ • Limo driver • Decorator • Hair stylist • Makeup artist • Officiant/commissioner • Photographer/videographer
Prioritize
Consider and rank priorities and align them with your budget. Consider the smaller details and their level of importance, then budget accordingly. If you don’t think having a lavish wedding cake is a big priority, slash the amount you spend on it. If having a top-rate photographer is something important to you, then allocate more of your budget for it.
Book in advance
You can’t always plan when the proposal happens, but weddings need to be booked in advance for your venue, photographer, commissioner, etc. to all line up on the date you would like. Even if you are flexible on the date, the vendors you want may not be, so be sure to book as much in advance as you can.
Send thank-you cards
Regardless if they gave you a gift or not, always send a thank-you card. They took time out of their lives to celebrate with you and you need to acknowledge it. A tip for when it comes to gifts — once unwrapped, you probably won’t remember who it is from. A good trick is to either tape the card to the gift they gave you, take a photo of the gift and who it is from or even film unwrapping all the gifts. It is best to have a helper write in the card what they gave you.

Make the most out of the big day A few tips can go a long way Provide meals
Most photographers, DJs or other vendors who will be around during mealtime will need to be fed. If you are unsure whether they are expecting it, just ask. They don’t need a special place setting; vendors, like most DJ’s, will sit and eat at their station. Make sure the bridesmaids and groomsmen are fed. Spending the morning primping and getting ready means most won’t have time for a bite to eat. Then they are carted off to the ceremony and you don’t want anyone to have spent their day with an empty stomach.
Be wary of Pinterest
Pinterest is a great tool for ideas or current trends, but plenty of the DIY centerpieces you have pinned aren’t always cheaper. Consider your budget, guests and time for wedding planning before running off to the thrift store. There are always great ideas and it is a great place to spark creativity, but you don’t want your special day straight from a wedding board. Be original and consider your own style while planning the big day. When planning DIYs, always do it in advance. Lastminute searching and crafting is stressful and you won’t have as much time as you think in the weeks leading up to the wedding. Things may not turn out the way you hoped they would so be prepared to have a backup (think Pinterest fails).

Rehearse
Even if walking down the aisle seems like a no-brainer, it is always recommended to have a rehearsal. Be sure to invite your photographer, especially if the ceremony is outside, so they know what to expect for your wedding party and the weather at that time. Ensure everyone knows where they are supposed to be walking to and from and take the sunlight into consideration, especially for photos. Ideally schedule your rehearsal the day before at the same time as your wedding ceremony so you will have an idea of how the lighting will be at that time.
Assign a point of contact
When a vendor asks for a point of contact, ensure it isn’t someone in the wedding party. If the bakery is going to be late delivering your cake and they are frantically trying to call your sister to let you know, chances are she doesn’t have her phone stuffed into her bridesmaid dress. To lessen stress on the day of, ask a reliable friend or family member who isn’t a part of the wedding party. Ideally the point of contact will be part of the planning process and will know what’s is going on, but will still be available during the day. This means they probably won’t be off taking photos with everyone and will ensure that they have their phone on them for a hiccup-free day.

Save the date before it’s too late If you have recently decided to get married, there is no time to lose. Some people book venues years in advance, so be sure to reserve your date before it’s too late. Even the services of the marriage officiant should be reserved early. The first step is to determine whether you want a religious or civil wedding. Then comes the choice of reception venue.
The possibilities abound: Reception hall, conference centre, restaurant, hotel, country inn, golf club, outfitter, ski resort, spa, vineyard, orchard, farm, sugar shack, museum, botanical garden, marina, cruise ship or cottage. The options depend on your imagination. Narrow down the list of choices by finding out if they can accommodate everyone on your guest list.
Ask about the services and equipment available, such as tables and chairs, decorations, catering, entertainment, liquor license, bathrooms, kitchen area and audio and video equipment. Be sure to check what is and what isn’t included in the package. Then, make a deposit, jot down the date on the calendar and get to work on the other details.

Wedding registries as unique as the couple
A crucial part of planning a wedding is also planning for and creating a wedding registry. The bridal registry is extremely important if you want to avoid duplicate gifts. Starting a registry early gives guests enough time to choose what items they would like to give you. You may not have a comprehensive wedding registry ready early on, but make it large enough for guests to have enough options to browse and choose. You also need to plan what kind of registry you want and what kinds of items and products need to be a part of it. The ideal wedding registry for a young couple is one that lists household items. Such a registry is
perfect for a couple starting a new life together. Let’s take a look at some of the wedding gifts that can be a part of the ideal wedding registry. A lot of young couples benefit from a kitchenware wedding registry. Having a well-equipped kitchen means creating and sharing meals together at home, entertaining and cooking whenever you want. Kitchenware items can range from regular silverware and glassware to appliances like mixers, food processors, toasters
and coffee machines. Equally as useful for a couple as a kitchenware registry are homefurnishing items and a home-linen registry that includes products like tablecloths, bedding and bath towels. You can include items like duvet sets, bed sheets, pillows, bed skirts and blankets. It may also be appropriate to include home furnishings and home linen products like tablecloths, towels, cloth napkins, curtains, rugs and more.

Shower her with favours
Add a touch of fun to a bridal shower with these ideas One popular shower theme is a tea party. Tea is typically served to guests with various specialty pastries or minisandwiches. Guests may be asked to wear a hat and gloves, while the bride-to-be decks out in an Alice in Wonderlandstyle dress. Another interesting theme is the room-of-the-house. Guests may be assigned different rooms in the house and are expected to bring gifts suited to that room. As a guest, bring a gift to make that room more comfortable and appealing. Another example would be a quality kitchen appliance for the kitchen of the house. A variation of this theme for a wedding shower is the stock-the-bar version. Guests bring specialty alcoholic beverages to stock the newlyweds’ bar. Or, how about a wine-tasting theme? As the name implies, anything winerelated is suitable as a gift; however the gift options don’t
need to be limited to the wine type. You can buy silver heart wine stoppers, candles, mini-cocktail shakers or wine glasses. A lingerie-themed party is yet another popular choice. Set the room with candles, chocolates and roses and include red floor pillows for guests to sit on. Guests bring gifts of lingerie for the bride. For a honeymoon-themed party, the focus is on the destination chosen by the couple. Gifts would depend on the destination — but don’t have to be limited to this. Guests can bring airplane luggage tags, black book city guides and even custom-labelled to-go mugs. One final idea to make the most out of a bridal shower is to opt for a pyjama party. Guests can come in their pyjamas and appropriate gifts would including such choices as monogrammed cosmetic cases, funky pyjamas or personalized slippers.

Dress to impress on the big day
When co-ordinating wedding party attire, consider these helpful reminders. While brides and grooms can opt for any looks or combinations they so desire, groomsmen traditionally match their attire to the groom’s. The groom can choose accessories in white or the wedding colour, and the the best man wears the same colours as the groom. As for the bridesmaids, they wear the wedding colour selected by the couple. All members of the wedding party dress in the same colours for perfect harmony. It is better to dress all the men in the wedding party in identical tuxedoes, with accessories varied to distinguish the groom from the groomsmen. To this end, it is best to choose a flattering tuxedo which will suit all the men. Some styles can offer a different look, depending on the accessories used to modify them. With a classic-cut tuxedo, the groom can choose the look he prefers by selecting bright and colourful or more conservative accessories.

Perfect wedding cake about more than taste A tiered wedding cake is often a fitting conclusion to a wedding reception. Today’s brides and grooms are experimenting with flavours and designs so their cake is unique. It’s no longer necessary to stick with a white cake with buttercream frosting. Think about exploring other flavours and fillings to tempt the guests’ taste buds. For those who can’t settle on just one flavour, how about having a different flavour for each layer? Couples getting married in the fall may want to think about a spice cake that evokes the feelings of sipping a mug of spiced cider. Cream cheese frosting is often a pairing with spice cake or think about

a layer of caramel that will make it taste like you’re enjoying a candied Halloween apple. A hummingbird cake may fit the bill for a spring wedding. This is made with mashed bananas, pineapples and chopped pecans. This cake is perfect when paired with cream cheese frosting. Yellow or white cake are universal favourites. Some pizzazz can be added through the use of creative fillings. Consider something citrusy for a summer wedding. Raspberry preserves or lemon curd are tart and sweet. For a tropical flair, mangoes or passion fruit can be mixed with touches of coconut. A winter wedding can be accented
with rich flavours, like a decadent chocolate cake filled with chocolate ganache and black cherries — black forest style. Those toasting to the good life may want an almond cake enhanced with some fine liqueur and simple chocolate buttercream. Couples should sit down with their baker and sample a number of flavour combinations to determine a recipe that works for them. Pastry companies also may be able to develop a cake that encompasses a couple’s favourite flavours or symbolizes a special moment in their lives. A Boston cream pie-inspired cake may liven up the wedding of a couple who became engaged in Boston. A cannoli cream-filled cake will usher memories of a trip to Italy. Kids at heart can enjoy candy confection cakes filled with gooey chocolate, nuts and marshmallows. Whatever the case, couples can use their cake as a centerpiece that wows the senses of taste as well as sight. Consider displaying this culinary masterpiece on a table with the seating cards placed around it so that it can be enjoyed the entire night.

Fresh take on floral arrangements When you have decided on a florist, make an appointment to discuss choices. The first thing couples should do is advise the florist of any budget within which they will be required to work. Then, the best flower choices can be selected. From there, advise the florist of any wedding colour scheme or theme. Give an accurate description of the dress and, if possible, show them a photograph.
Consider utilizing flowers for fresh bouquets for the bride, maid of honour, bridesmaids, flower girls, corsages/wrist corsages for mothers, grandmothers and special guests. Flowers for hair accessories/ headpieces for the bride, bridesmaids and flower girls. Boutonnières for the groom, groomsmen, fathers, ring bearer and attendants. Other places to use flowers
include the guest signing-book table, pew/chair markers, signing of the marriage certificate table, flower accents for candelabras/altar, flower petals if ceremony venue allows it or a traditional ceremony table. At the reception, couples may wish to utilize flowers for table centrepieces, favour table, bar, entrance arrangements, bathroom arrangements, buffet-table arrangements and head table.

Catch a plane, skip the pain For those looking to head straight for the honeymoon, some couples may wish to consider a destination wedding. Beyond the beautiful areas in which to say “I do”, the option is convenient, being that many resorts offer complete wedding services. Here are a few more perks to catching a plane before walking down the aisle:
Easier planning
Planning any wedding takes up considerable time and energy. Many resorts offer services to help plan a destination wedding.
Vacation time
While the wedding is the star of the trip, it is also an added bonus for friends and family to have a vacation, relax, reconnect and celebrate. Plus, your honeymoon begins right after you say “I do!”
Stand out
Tying the knot in paradise means your wedding won’t be at the same hometown locations many of your friends have picked. There are plenty of destinations, resorts and locations to select from that will create a unique way to celebrate and stand out from the pack.
Stunning setting
Couples won’t need to break the bank on décor being immersed in a gorgeous location with a tropical backdrop. You can still add your own personality with flowers, candles and unique pieces. There are plenty of options available to make it your own.
Quality time with friends and family
Traditional weddings often fly by so quickly, it’s difficult to visit with each guest. Choosing a destination wedding means having more time to spend with loved ones.

Unique and useful wedding gift ideas for modern couples While it is easy for a bride and groom to be swept up in wedding planning, it is important to indicate to guests what kind of gift will set up the couple for future success. Nobody wants to be stuck with three crockpots, so guide friends and family with these creative ideas for a wedding gift wish list.
The gift of choice
Nowadays, many couples have been living together for years before tying the knot, meaning they won’t need basics like plates and cutlery. They would probably prefer a cash gift to help pay for the wedding or a gift card to a nice restaurant or home store.
Luxurious linens
No one can ever have too many well-appointed linens. High threadcount sheets and comfy pillows are great options for new and established couples.
Kitchen memories
While many couples will have the basics, most won’t have splurged on quality, high-performance appliances that stand the test of time. Encourage them to make new memories in the kitchen together with a tool they can use to prepare delicious meals, like the Cuisinart Precision Master Stand Mixer. The powerful appliance comes with step-by-step instructions for dozens of recipes, for making everything from a spinach and feta soufflé to chocolate chunk cookies.
A weekend getaway
Give the couple a chance to unwind and reconnect with a long weekend away from home a few months after the wedding. A nice bed and breakfast an hour away is an affordable but thoughtful gift that will be well received.
Monogrammed anything
Matching his and hers items are cute and commemorate the special occasion. Think monogrammed towels, bathrooms or coffee mugs for a personalized touch.

How to plan your wedding (almost) entirely online It’s 2017 and we live in a world where we spend the majority of our lives connected to the Internet, where we use various online resources and apps to shop, cook, learn, get fit and keep in touch with family and friends. But why stop there? If we can do all of those things online, why not plan our wedding online, too? We’ve compiled some of our favourite online wedding planning resources and apps guaranteed to make your wedding planning experience virtually stress-free.
Invites and websites:
After getting engaged, one of the first things you want to do is save the date. Many happy couples are finding it helpful to have their own custom wedding website and sites like minted. com make this a free and easy process for even the least tech-savvy brides. Start your free wedding website on Minted today and have one common area to communicate with your guests, collect RSVPs, share important wedding details and more. One of the best parts about minted.com is that
14
you can also order stationary packages that match your website and wedding theme; think save the dates, invites, menus, programs and thank-yous — what are you waiting for?
Wedding planning:
If you’re the one-stop-shop kind of couple, then finding an all-inclusive wedding planning website will be the best option for you. The ever popular Wedding Wire website has now launched in Canada (weddingwire.ca) and is the No. 1 trafficked wedding website in the entire country, with more than 150,000 visits per month. Our B.C. wedding industry is excelling at using this site and there are now more than 18,000 searches for provincial wedding venues each month. If you haven’t visited yet, be sure to check it out to find local vendors, venues and “real weddings” inspiration to help plan your big day.
Online communities and forums: When saying “yes to the dress,” you’ll likely bring along your closest
friends and family members for their opinions and reassurances to confirm you are making the right decision. Online communities and forums have implemented this same idea in the rest of your planning process by allowing you to read reviews, ask questions and solicit advice to keep this level of confidence when making other big decisions. Reading venue and vendor reviews from other couples can help answer some of your preliminary questions to see if you want to enquire further to find the perfect match. Sites like Minted and Wedding Wire have large-scale community forums, while joining local Facebook pages (fro example, Kamloops Wedding Swap and Buy) will provide you with a more local perspective on wedding resources close to home. With more resources than ever before, today’s modern couple can begin to create the wedding of their dreams with just the click of a button. This article is in no way sponsored by any of the above-mentioned websites and is strictly a representation of the opinions of the TRU Conference Centre Staff. Statistics in the wedding planning section were provided by weddingwire.ca.
