My people don’t like it when I leave yellow marks on the lawn! Did you know that those yellow marks are caused by impurities in the water you drink, such as tin, ammonia, and nitrates that are then passed through you? Adding “Dog Rocks” to your water is a natural, chemical-free way to filter out those impurities and eliminate those grass burns.

My beak is getting a little long. What can I do? Did you know that the easiest way to keep your beak trim is by using a cuttle bone? Remember to replace your cuttle bone for a new one every two months to keep it fresh and odour free.

I’m feeling kind of low and I’m not eating as much as I usually do. While there are many avenues to explore, one of the most common causes of feeling low and lack of appetite could be a lack of UV exposure. Did you know that your UV bulbs should be changed every 6-8 months to maintain an optimum UV output?

What Makes a Great Dance School? There are lots of extracurriculars these days for children. Dance is a great way to stay active and increase endurance, co-ordination, strength, flexibility, agility, confidence and expression. Life skills that will follow your young dancer into adulthood. Because all parents want the best for their children, here are some things to consider when choosing the dance studio that will best fit your – and your child’s – needs. •F irst call or email the studio and ask questions about what programs they have for the age group you are looking into. • W hat are the fees? Are there fees in addition to the price of enrolment? • How much are costumes and are there any other fees that come up throughout the season? • W hat is the philosophy of the dance studio? • Is it to teach children how to enjoy dance and build many life skills? Is it to offer a safe, fun and nurturing environment ? How do they feel about the competition side of dance ? What avenues are there for your child whether they choose to compete or not compete? Does the studio recognize there is a path for recreational dancers as well?

4

Teachers

Your child’s dance instructors should be positive, professional and have dance experience . They should have a rapport with their students that promotes not only technical growth, but confidence and nurtures your dancer. Ask what the teacher’s name will be. Talk to your dancer at home about their teacher and get them excited about meeting them. Feel free to ask about the teacher and how their journey in dance began.

Facility

Your child’s dance studio should be equipped with: • Mirrors to promote learning technique • Sprung floors to prevent injuries • Ballet barres • Age appropriate music, movements and themes.

Discipline

Remember that dance is a discipline. This starts with respect for the studio, teacher and to yourself. It is important to come weekly to class to stay committed and to always Decide in what type of class you would like to come in proper attire listed by your studio. enrol your child. How to Save Time, Money & Water! Lawn Care Tips: Proper lawn care can help reduce water usage and save you money. Mowing high – leaving grass about 5 to 7.5 centimetres tall – shades the roots and helps prevent evaporation. Leaving your grass clippings on the lawn, known as grasscycling, can help reduce watering and fertilizing. Lastly, water deeply, but infrequently. Your lawn only needs about 2.5cm of water per week to stay green, but try watering only one to two times a week. It encourages deep rooting and drought tolerance. Xeriscape: By xeriscaping our individual landscapes, we use water more responsibly. Even if you are not ready to do a complete makeover, becoming more knowledgeable and aware of your existing landscape is a start. Here are two simple steps that will make a difference: alter your irrigation to match your plant’s actual water requirements and make adjustments to minimize overspray onto hard surfaces. Water when it is cool and calm. Early morning is best, followed by early evening. hall. Get some xeriscaping ideas by visiting the demonstration garden on McArthur Island, or the one at the booster station in Westsyde at 790 Harrington Road. Consider Clover: Traditional lawns can be costly and time-consuming to maintain. White clover can be a great alternative. It stays greener with less water, is immune to dog spots, attracts beneficial insects and is inexpensive. Why not try an experimental clover lawn in a small area and see how much time, money and water you save?

Starting a Clover Lawn

Springtime is best for seeding. However, it can also be seeded in fall. There are two starting points – bare ground and existing lawn. To mix clover in with an existing lawn:

4) S ince the seed is so small and difficult to sow evenly, it is suggested that it be mixed with soil, sawdust or graded sand (grain size approx. one mm) for distribution in a broadcast spreader. Do NOT cover seed with a layer more than 0.6cm (¼”) deep. 5) I f there is no clover present in the lawn or nearby, you may need to add a bacterial inoculant to promote the best growth. It can be mixed with the seed. 6) W ater daily for about 10 days. At temperatures above 15c, most seed will germinate in less than a week. 7) U ntil established mow regularly at 3.75 – 5 cm (1.5 – 2”), then return to higher mowing height.

Save Time, Money & Water! Have a lawn you can feel good about. Here are three lawn care tips that will save time, money and water: 1. Mow High Leaving grass 5 – 7.5 cm (2-3”) tall, shades the roots and helps prevent evaporation. 2. Grasscycle Leave grass clippings on the lawn when mowing. Eliminate bagging and raking and reduce watering and fertilizing. 3. Water Properly Water deeply, but infrequently. This means watering 1 - 2 days per week, but when you do, give your grass about 2.5 cm (1") of water. Consider Clover: Reasons Why Traditional Lawns are Becoming Less Desirable • In Kamloops, rainfall is not enough to keep grass green and the cost of watering grass can be an issue. • Many people do not have the time or energy to maintain a lawn that needs to be cut and watered frequently. • There are environmental concerns surrounding pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and lawn mower emissions. Advantages of White Clover • Stays green all summer with less water than grass. • Grows well in poor soil. • Immune to "dog spots". • Never needs nitrogen application as it creates its own.

• Can be mowed, or left to grow. • Out competes most weeds. • Attracts beneficial insects. • Is inexpensive.

Reminder: The Pesticide Use Control By-Law 26-2 is in effect. Residents may use certain pesticides while other products may only be applied by an Approved Applicator. For more information visit kamloops.ca/ipm or pick up a brochure from City Hall. Contact: Integrated Pest Management Coordinator 250-828-3888 or healthylandscapes@kamloops.ca kamloops.ca/ipm

Did you know? Before herbicides came into common use in the 1950s, white clover was considered a standard of excellence in lawn care and was a desired component of lawn seed mixes. Good quality grass seed had a high percentage of white clover. clover.

CONSUMER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BY THE EXPERTS

How to Choose the Right Dental Office for Your Family In past years, we looked for a dentist who just had a good reputation and a convenient location. In 2017, this, along with online reviews, is still not enough to evaluate the right dentist. Meeting with the dentist should be part of the decision process. You want to make sure you have a good rapport and comfort level with all the dental staff in the office.

What traits should I look for in a dentist?

1) S trong Conversational Skills: A dentist with good conversation skills helps put patients at ease, especially helpful with nervous children. Nobody wants to be at the dentist’s office, but a dentist who is confident and able to put people at ease will make patients feel more comfortable in a dentist’s chair. 2) Passion and Concern: A dentist who shows good passion for their profession is more trustworthy. Expressing genuine concern shows they can be counted on to provide good service and will take pride in their work. 3) I nterest in a Patient’s Overall Health: A good dentist will show interest in a patient’s overall health and the oral connection of teeth to the rest of the body. Issues in the mouth can lead to other bodily ailments, such as diabetes, stroke, dementia or heart disease. Education should be provided to the patient. 4) A Helpful and Friendly Staff: Many people, especially children, are nervous about a dentist’s appointment. Before they meet with the dentist, patients should note the hospitality of the front desk receptionist of the office. A friendly, impressive staff should answer questions and discuss payment and insurance issues with relative comfort.

What new dental equipment should a modern office have available for my care?

People deserve the best care possible with the latest dental equipment and technology. Your new dentist’s office should have advanced equipment to provide better care compared to a generation ago. 1) Panorex: Full mouth digital X-ray technology. Will show calcifications in the carotid arteries, a definite causative factor in patients developing stroke. 2) CariVu System: An infrared light diagnostic tool is shone over the tooth of concern. A close up photo of the site is taken and it shows many defects in the tooth that aren’t easily visible to the naked eye or on X-ray. (New, only four in B.C.). Pain-free. 3) VELscope System: The VELscope is a safe and revolutionary handheld device that shines a blue light and highlights abnormal oral tissue and lesions that could indicate oral cancer. VELscope doesn’t use any dyes or rinses. It often helps detect early tissue changes in cancerous lesions that might not be apparent or even visible to the naked eye. This is important as oral cancer is on the rise. Completely non-invasive and pain-free. 4) Cerec by Sirona: New 3D technology to fabricate an esthetic ceramic crown or partial crowns in a single appointment, no temporaries needed. 5) CT Scanner: Ideal for checking the anatomy of teeth, implant placement, any bony or sinus pathologies. Pain-free.

What options do I have for anxiety relief during my appointment?

Every patient has a right to be evaluated carefully and a right to have all of the treatment options explained to them. The dentist should take special care to help patients with any fears or phobias that they may have. Ask if your dentist can provide these options: 1) Nitrous oxide (laughing gas)

8

What other important oral health conditions should I be aware of for my overall health?

1) TMD: A lot of patients suffer from TMD (pain/dysfunction of the jaw joint). Often, oral appliances are used in an attempt to reduce symptoms, but they don’t work all the time. Botox can relax the muscles to relieve the pain and is much more likely to be covered by insurance. 2) Dry Mouth Syndrome: Patients with very dry mouths have an increase in cavity rate. There are many products to help decrease dry mouth to reduce cavities. 3) Joint Replacements: People with recent joint surgery will need to take antibiotics prior to dental appointments for at least six months to prevent bacteria from entering the blood stream and damaging the joint.

Could my health conditions be caused by my periodontal disease?

Yes. It is very important that your dentist ask you about your overall health during each visit. 1) Cardiovascular Disease: The bacteria from inflammation of the gums and periodontal disease can enter your bloodstream and travel to the arteries in the heart and causing inflamation in the vessels of the heart, leading to heart disease. 2) Respiratory Infections: The Journal of Periodontology warns that gum disease could cause you to get infections in your lungs, including pneumonia. 3) Diabetes: Diabetics are more susceptible to the toxins in the gum disease, thus creating more rapid bone loss or sometimes tooth loss. 4) Dementia: There has been a correlation between bacteria toxins from the mouth and the early onset of Alzheimer’s.

2) Oral sedation 3) IV Sedation or general anesthetic, which is the most extensive pain relief.

We have invested in the latest dental equipment to help detect early disease, such as cancer and stroke. Patients are given the utmost control over the treatment they receive. We give them the options, and complications, and let them make educated choices about their health care. DR. DELLA SUMMERS - Dentist/Owner I love my work! Dentistry gives me the opportunity to constantly learn. If I look at what I am doing now in dentistry, as compared to 1983 when I graduated from the University of Saskatoon, I wouldn’t think it was the same field….its better! As a dentist, my mission is to provide professional, current, and friendly treatment to our patients. It also is to take away the fears of their dental histories. Dentistry does not have to hurt, nor is it something to be afraid of. I believe every patient has a right to be evaluated carefully, and a right to have all of the treatment options explained to them. I take special care to help patients with any fears or phobias that they may have. Then we can address different forms of sedation available to them. We attempt to exceed your expectations! I feel the best compliment I can receive from a patient is when they say, “I felt like I was visiting my friends, rather than a dentist”! Drop in and meet us!

DR. MICHAEL PENG - Dentist Dr. Michael Peng is our new associate dentist. He recently relocated from London, Ontario to Kamloops with his fiancee and their rescue cats. Dr. Mike obtained his D.D.S. from Western University and also holds bachelor’s degrees in medical biophysics and electrical engineering (University of Toronto OT7). CONSUMER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BY THE EXPERTS

Mutual Fund Fees – for Unbiased Advice and Lower Costs Which structure is best for you? Deferred Sales Charge (DSC) – comes in different formats

• Full DSC (BE) – usually takes six to seven years before you become commission free. Here the fund company usually pays a 5% commission to the dealer. Eg a 500,000.00 investment means a 25,000.00 commission to the dealer, which you will pay for, if you cash out early.

Low Load DSC

• Usually takes two to three years to become commission-free. Here the fund company usually pays a 2% to 3% commission to the dealer, which you pay for if you cash out early. • In both cases, your dealer also gets an ongoing trailer fee. • FE – or front end means you pay up front anywhere from 0% to 5% as a one-time commission going in. • Your dealer also gets an ongoing trailer fee.

Trailers:

• Trailers are paid by the mutual fund company to the dealer. • They are included in the overall MER charged by the fund company. • They range on average from .25% or 25 basis points, up to 1.25% or 125 basis points. • The lower volatile funds, such as fixed income, pay the lowest trailers, while the pure equity funds pay the highest.

MER – Management Expense Ratio

• The MER is the cost of managing your fund • The MER consists of both the fund company costs and the dealer costs • There is also a small TER (trading expense ratio at the fund company level to cover taxes and incidentals).

10

Fee Based:

• No commission or trailer is paid. A fee is negotiated between you and your advisor, usually based on the value of your account.

The Four major benefits here are: 1) You can write off the fees on your non-registered funds.

2) The MER is reduced by the value of the trailer and in most cases it is reduced a little bit more than the trailer (lower costs), as there is less work for the mutual fund company. 3) No cost for rebalancing your portfolio. 4) Your advisor can be totally unbiased in his advice as there is no longer an incentive due to commission’s or trailer fees.

Financial Planning

• Estate and trust planning – establishing appropriate vehicles to protect accumulated wealth (may include insurance consulting) . • General tax planning, e.g.: tax loss harvesting – Selling securities with losses can offset gain positions, minimizing taxes. Investors may be unwilling to incur trading costs on securities which have declined in value. Behavioural economics has shown investors often want to hold securities until they have recovered their losses. Tax loss harvesting may raise post-tax returns.

Portfolio Rebalancing

• Rebalancing has been shown to add 0.30% annualized return but investors will hesitate to rebalance when faced with trading commissions. Fee-based planning eliminates this concern as there is no cost when rebalancing. Failure to rebalance adds unintended risk to a portfolio.

Behavioural Coaching

• Minimizing losses – reluctance to trade securities that have dropped in value exposes a portfolio to increased downside risk. Eliminating the commission concern from trade decisions results in more objective assessments. • Running a concentrated portfolio – it may be uneconomic to add to existing positions because each trade will trigger a commission. As a result, investors tend to favour adding additional securities, changing the portfolio’s risk profile and diluting core holdings . • Asset allocation determines 91.5% of an investor’s probability of achieving their investment objectives. Rebalancing a concentrated portfolio, minimizing losses, is a major consideration in asset allocation. Kamloops This Week | ASK AN EXPERT

Family Serving Families If you are working with a funeral home to plan a funeral or memorial service, the cost of the funeral can be broken down into three main categories: the Basic Service Fee, the costs of any additional services or goods, and cash advances.

Basic Service Fee

The Basic Service Fee, sometimes referred to as the “Basic Services of Funeral Director and Staff,” is for funeral homes’ required services and any overhead costs associated with those services. The Basic Service Fee is non-declinable, but will vary from company to company. Generally, “basic services” include: •F iling any necessary paperwork

Additional Services And Goods

Additional services and goods are items that the funeral home offers for an additional fee, and are available at your discretion. These goods and services may include: • Securing any necessary permits and • Embalming or cosmetic issuing of the death certificate preparations of the body • Properly storing the remains • The use of a funeral home or cemetery • Coordinating arrangements with the chapel for a viewing or visitation, cemetery, crematory, or any other third parties funeral service, or memorial service • Overhead expenses related to the • The use of a hearse, limousine, funeral home facility and operations or other transportation • A casket, outer burial container, or urn • Bigger facilties doesn’t always mean more expensive • Burial clothing For burial and cremation, the Basic Services The purchase of all additional goods and services Fee is a flat-rate charge and may not vary, are at your discretion. 12

In these four cases, the Basic Service fee may be less than the normal Basic Service Fee. However, some funeral homes may charge a flat-rate Basic Service Fee for all services, including the four listed above. Be aware that many funeral homes try to have fairly low Basic Service Fee, as the Basic Service Fee is often used as a price indicator. However, the funeral home may make up for the decreased Basic Service Fee in higher prices of goods and services, and multiple charges for Items like faxes and even pacemaker removal!

Cash Advances

Cash advances are fees charged by the funeral home for any goods or services they may purchase on your behalf from third-party vendors. These goods and services can include: • Cemetery or crematory charges • Compensation for clergy or other service officiants • Musicians, including organists, pianists, and soloists • Car rentals such as limousines • Obituary-filing costs • Flowers Although the Kamloops Funeral Home Family only charges the actual cost of cash advances, many funeral providers will mark up cemetery charges, obituary costs, ad nauseam….Feel free to ask for a copy of the actual invoice.

CONSUMER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BY THE EXPERTS

What is Permanent Makeup? Permanent makeup, cosmetic tattooing and micro-pigmentation are all interchangeable terms used to describe the implantation of pigment makeup colours into the dermal layer of the skin. Permanent makeup is a cosmetic tattoo that can replicate missing eyebrow hairs, give eyebrows even symmetry with the perfect powdered finish, enhance and define eyes, and give lips a natural plump with precise full colour or beautifully blended lip liner. This long-lasting procedure is fast becoming one of the most popular beauty treatments available today. Permanent cosmetics are commonly used to fill in sparse eyebrows, to help improve the appearance of full eyelashes, to emphasize the eyes, to define and increase colour in the lips and to camouflage scars or imperfections.

Who are the best candidates for permanent makeup?

People with visual impairments, unsteady hands, busy lifestyles, stress, changes in hair growth due to hormonal changes or medications, allergies to topical cosmetics or simply the desire to wake up with makeup are a few of many great example candidates. More and more women are discovering the lasting beauty and wonderful convenience of permanent makeup

Who applies the permanent cosmetics?

Technicians must follow strict hygiene and sterilization procedures that conform to OSHA All procedures should be performed by a and CDC (Centers for Disease Control) technician who is properly certified in permanent guidelines. By using only disposable needles, makeup and preferably and artist with advanced our clients know that anything that touches training and years of experience in this field. them has never been touched by anyone else.

Is tattooing and permanent makeup What if I want to basically the same thing? change my makeup? No, the principle is similar, but the instruments, purity colour, depth of penetration and technique are very different. There are many different layers of skin on your body. Normal tattooing penetrates much further into the skin, while permanent makeup only goes as deep as the first two or three layers. The work needs to be subtler so it can enhance the natural beauty rather than overpower it. Certified permanent makeup clinicians also use effective topical anesthetics that are allowed for micropigmentation. They also use instruments that are much more delicate in design that provides natural-looking results and much less discomfort.

14

How safe is it?

We work with your natural facial features to enhance them to their fullest. This natural look allows you to apply normal cosmetics over your “permanent makeup for colour variety. Therefore, without any applied makeup, you are always naturally enhanced.

Do you offer free, no obligation, confidential consultations? Yes, by appointment only. Jacquie will go over what to expect before, during and post-procedure. All procedures come with a written after care instructions.

How long does it last?

Permanent makeup will generally last between three to five years. However, skin foliates differently for each individual based on their skin and their lifestyle. Once the pigment has faded, the colour can be refreshed for a new look.

CONSUMER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BY THE EXPERTS

How to Eat Better & Live Healthier by Shopping Local Locally grown food tastes and looks better

The crops are picked at their peak and farmstead products like cheeses are handcrafted for best flavour. Livestock products are processed in nearby facilities and typically the farmer has direct relationship with processors, overseeing quality — unlike animals processed in large industrial facilities.

Local food is better for you

The shorter the time between the farm and your table, the less likely it is that nutrients will be lost from fresh food. Food imported from far away is older, has travelled on trucks or planes and has sat in warehouses before it gets to you.

Local food preserves genetic diversity

In the modern agricultural system, plant varieties are chosen for their ability to ripen uniformly, withstand harvesting, survive packing and last a long time on the shelf, so there is limited genetic diversity in large-scale production. Smaller local farms, in contrast, often grow many different varieties of crops to provide a long harvest season, an array of colours and the best flavours. Livestock diversity is also higher, where there are many small farms rather than few large farms.

Local food is safe

There’s a unique kind of assurance that comes from looking a farmer in the eye at farmers’ markets or driving by the fields where your food comes from. Local farmers aren’t anonymous and they take their responsibility to the consumer seriously.

Local food supports local families

16

The wholesale prices that farmers get for their products are low, often near the cost of production. Local farmers who sell direct to consumers cut out the middleman and get full retail price for their food, which helps farm families stay on the land.

Local food builds community

When you buy direct from a farmer, you’re engaging in a time-honoured connection between eater and grower. Knowing farmers gives you insight into the seasons, the land and your food. In many cases, it gives you access to a place where your children and grandchildren can go to learn about nature and agriculture.

Local food preserves open space

When farmers get paid for their products by marketing locally, they’re less likely to sell farmland for development. When you buy locally grown food, you’re doing something proactive to preserve our working landscape. That landscape is an essential ingredient to other economic activity in the state, such as tourism and recreation.

Local food keeps taxes down

According to several studies by the American Farmland Trust, farms contribute more in taxes than they require in services, whereas most development contributes less in taxes than the cost of required services. Cows don’t go to school, tomatoes don’t dial 911.

Local food benefits the environment and wildlife

Well-managed farms provide ecosystem services: they conserve fertile soil, protect water sources and sequester carbon from the atmosphere. The farm environment is a patchwork of fields, meadows, woods, ponds and buildings that provide habitat for wildlife in our communities.

Local food is an investment in the future

By supporting local farmers today, you are helping to ensure that there will be farms in your community tomorrow. That is a matter of importance for food security, especially in light of an uncertain energy future and our current reliance on fossil fuels to produce, package, distribute and store food.

CONSUMER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BY THE EXPERTS

How to Buy Your Wife or Girlfriend a Motorcycle OK, you’re a keen and committed driver but you’d like to share your passion with the love of your life. Here’s how you do it:

(You might not be able to afford both)

Consider these questions:

• Can she place both feet flat on the ground without straining? • Can she reach all the controls without overextending? Is she too restricted, too cramped in the riding position? • Can she turn the handlebars in both directions without overreaching? • Can her foot reach the brake pedal comfortably? • Can her hands reach and operate the brake and clutch levers without straining? • How does the comfort of the seat feel? While some seats and controls can be adjusted somewhat, she should feel comfortable with the way the bike feels.

More things to consider with fit:

• THE WEIGHT OF THE BIKE: Can she pull the bike off the sidestand without a struggle? If it feels too heavy for you, it probably is too heavy for her, and you don’t need a whole lot of bike when you’re first learning how to ride. Larger, heavier bikes are not the best choice for beginners. • THE SIZE OF THE ENGINE: Motorcycle engines are commonly referred to by their cubic centimeter (cc) displacement or, with late-model motorcycles, their cubic inches (ci)—and the higher the number the more power the engine has. Motorcycles with large engines—anything higher than 500cc—increase the chances that a new rider will have a steeper learning curve.

Consider these questions:

18

• W hat kind of riding do you plan to do? • Will you be puttering around the neighborhood? Commuting 50 kilometers a day on the highway? Taking long trips on the weekends? • Do you need cargo room? Will you be carrying stuff on your motorcycle? • Are you going to be riding on paved roads, dirt roads, or both? Kamloops This Week | ASK AN EXPERT

CONSUMER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BY THE EXPERTS

Top 10 Consumer Questions Question: I always seem to get blisters. Why is that?

Answer: This is one of the top questions we get asked! Blisters are caused by friction or movement. The two most common causes we see are: 1) shoes that aren’t tied properly, and 2) cotton socks. While cotton breathes well, it doesn’t wick moisture away. A foot that’s wet or damp is much more likely to blister.

Question: My toenails go black/ blue when I run. What’s with that? Answer: If your toenails are going black, it’s most likely because they’re hitting the end of your shoe. The two biggest reasons for this are: 1) your shoes are too short or 2) your shoes are laced incorrectly.

Question: I have custom orthotics. Do you have shoes that will accommodate them?

Answer: Yes! We have shoes that not only will fit your orthotics, but have the right support to make sure that they are being used effectively. We have hikers, walkers, runners and even sandals that will work!

Question: I heard your running shoes are more expensive than other stores. Is that true?

Answer: That’s a big misconception! We charge MSRP, or manufacturer’s suggested retail price, like all other merchants in town. The difference is, our trained staff will fit your feet to the right shoes for no extra charge!

Question: How long should running shoes last before I need to replace them?

20

Answer: This all depends on you! A 270-lb linebacker will need to replace shoes more often than a 125-lb female triathlete. Your activity, weight, and gait will all determine how long this is. The industry standard is 500 miles or 800 km.

The proper fit is crucial to your health, comfort & well being.

Question: I’m a walker. You don’t have anything for me, do you? Answer: Absolutely! We have classic leather walking shoes for men and women to supplement our collection of breathable running shoes that can be used for walking.

Question: I’ve had my shoes for five years. How do I tell when they’re worn out?

Answer: If you are feeling more achy than normal, have a recurring tender area or injury, chances are that your shoes are needing a replacement! We can assess your footwear to see if there’s any life left in them.

Question: I have plantar fasciitis. You can’t help with that, can you? Answer: Yes, we can! We see multiple customers daily with a variety of foot ailments, including plantar fasciitis. We carry products like compression socks, night splints and foam rollers than can help lessen your pain and fix your problems.

Question: I’m a size 14 2E. No one seems to carry big sizes. Do you?

TIPS:

• I f you’re already a runner, bring your current running shoes with you to the store. We can look at the wear on the bottom of your running shoes to get some more insight into your running style. •M ake sure you get your foot measured while you’re standing up. • I f you use orthotics or custom-fit insoles, bring them with you to try on your running shoes. You need running shoes that are roomy enough to accommodate your insoles. •D on’t pick running shoes based on the colours or style. Just because they look cute doesn’t mean they’ll be the best running shoe for you!

PUTTING FEET FIRST

Answer: We carry shoes ranging from infants all the way to size 22! We even have a special section in our store for large-sized shoes: 13 and up! If you need a size we don’t carry, big or small, we can order it!

Question: My friends all wear brand “XYZ”. Do you carry those?

Answer: We carry over 15 different shoe brands in the store! However, just because those shoes work for your friends doesn’t mean that they’ll work for you! Everybody’s feet are unique and need different types of support, shapes and sizes.

Answered by Wayne Richardson: Owner and Shoe Guru: Athletic career: 29 marathons, 35+ ultra marathons, Ironman and many more!

How to choose the Right Mattress and the Right Store Talk to your doctor

If you have a health condition, talk to your doctor or physical therapist about what he or she recommends. Keep in mind that doctors are not sleep experts, but they know your medical condition and symptoms and will probably have some good advice.

Take the mattress for a test drive

Try to lie on the mattress in the store for at least 10 to 15 min. Don’t feel self-conscious. Sisters Sleep Gallery offers a comfortable environment. It’s a big purchase and if you don’t try it for at least 10 minutes or more you’re not going to get a real feel for your new mattress.

Firm mattresses arenít always better Is an adjustable bed right for you? Think twice before buying a hard or firm mattress, as research has shown that the best mattress for low back pain is a medium-firm mattress. There is a difference between firm support and firm feel. You want firm support with a comfortable feel. Comfort will be determined by your personal preference.

Authorized dealer

Always purchase your bed from an authorized dealer for that brand, to ensure qualitymanufacturing warranty. Buyers beware. Purchasing a mattress from an authorized dealer guarantees you are purchasing new product and not a used or returned item. Warranty applies to new product only.

Canadian-made beds

The Sisters Sleep Gallery is a specialty store where they go above and beyond to get their customers the best deals on Canadianmade beds. Ask in store for more details on the benefits of beds made in Canada!

Ask about comfort guarantees

Many stores will give what’s called a comfort guarantee. Ask for it before you buy and be sure you understand the details.

Comfort benefits of adjustable beds • Relax in bed more comfortably • Massage benefits • Luxury/convenience • Customizable for couples

Buying a pillow?

Recognize when it might be time for a replacement. Pillows simply don’t last forever, so keep an eye out for lumps and sagging. Be sure to purchase the right pillow for your sleep style.
