KAMLOOPA DRUM RULES
• All lead singers must register their drum and all of the singers with that drum. Any changes made once the Drum registration form has been submitted to the secretaries will be considered as a singer(s) missing from Roll Call and points will be deducted accordingly; • There will be no late registration for drums, all drums must be registered before Drum Roll Call at 11:45 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 5, 2017; • No singers are allowed to register to more than one (1) drum group and no drum hopping. If singers are caught, penalties will be given to that registered drum; • All singers must be present and ready to sing when called upon. Points will be given for drum roll call, intertribal and contest songs. During contest songs all drums will be allowed four (4) starts. During intertribal songs all drums will be allowed five (5) leads unless otherwise directed by head staff;
• Drummers must keep drum area clean; • All drums must have a minimum of five (5) singers per group prior to registration and set-up; • Intertribals will go in left to right drum rotation and Contest will go in right to left drum rotation; • There are no drugs or alcohol allowed, if drummers are in possession or suspected to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol they will be disqualified; • Each drum will be judged on a point system beginning on Friday, August 4, 2017 as follows: • Present at drum roll call - 10 points for each Grand Entry (1 point deducted for each singer missing); • Leads - 5 points (each lead from a different singer is a point); • Starts singing when called upon – 5 points; • Singing - 5 points; • Drumming - 5 points; • Appropriate song - 5 points.

KAMLOOPA DANCE RULES • All contestants must be registered before the start of 12:00 noon grand entry on Saturday, August 5, 2017, and must be wearing the number issued to them (there will be no late registration of dancers); • All dance numbers must be visible to the judges and secretaries during the competitions, grand entries, exhibitions and spot checks; • All contestants must be in grand entry and enter with their category to receive points. The only exception is for dancers registered to the host drum(s); those dancers must be dressed and are responsible for giving their numbers to the secretaries before grand entry; • All contestants must be in the exhibition and/or spot checks to receive points. There will be no exceptions; • Each contestant will be judged on skill, dress and dance ability. Judging will be strictly on a point system, beginning on Grand Entry Friday as follows: - 1st Grand Entry - 75 points - 2nd to 4th Grand Entry - 50 points - Spot Checks/Exhibitions-25 points - 1st place- 50 points - 2nd place- 25 points - 3rd place- 15 points - 4th place- 10 points - Tiebreaker- 1 point
• A ll contestants must be at least onequarter (1/4) Native Blood. Proof of tribal identification/ status may be required; • Each contestant must be in full regalia during competitions, grand entries, exhibitions/ spot checks and to be of the correct gender for that category; • If an eagle feather of a contestant’s regalia falls or is dropped during competition, he/she must disqualify him/herself for that session and may be disqualified by the Arena Director or Whipman if the dancer does not self-disqualify; • Each contestant can only register in only one (1) dance category, with the exception being Specials; • There is a zero tolerance for drugs or alcohol, if dancers are in possession or suspected to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol they will be disqualified from the contest.

• All contestants must be 13 to 17 years old; enrolled in high school or another educational institute and must be single having no children or spouse, and be female; • Each contestant will be asked to: • Perform one straight dance. • Present a speech on a topic of choice • Perform a talent of choice • Must sell 50/50 tickets starting on Saturday, Aug. 5 • All contestants will be judged on a point system. There will be a total of one hundred points possible from each judge in five of the follows: • Outfit - 20 points • Dance – 20 points
• Speech – 20 points • Talent – 20 points • Poise & Appearance – 20 points • Total – 100 Points (In addition, the 50/50 tickets sold will be calculated out of 100 points and prorated for each contestant to their equivalent amount of tickets sold. For example, if the fewest tickets sold = 1,000 and the most tickets sold = 5,000, then the contestant who sells the least tickets will get 20 points and the contestant who sells the most tickets will get 100 points.) • The successful princess must return the crown; • The powwow committee will judge the pageant.

Brandon Daniels, a Stoney-Nakoda Sioux from Bearspaw Band in Morley, Alta., makes his home in Kamloops with his wife Delyla and their twin daughters Ella and Alexa. Brandon comes from a family of singers and dancers; he has experienced the life of the powwow trail traveling across Canada and the United States. Powwow has been a part of his life for over 20 years; he’s been a grass dancer since 1984 and started singing 1992. And, he is the lead singer of Sage Hills. Brandon would like to welcome all powwow people, visiting spectators, arts and crafts people and special guests to the 38th annual Kamloopa Powwow.
