This
year, RIH welcomed an unprecedented number of new physicians from all parts of Canada and from all areas of specialization to work in our hospital. On July 1, many medical residents either advanced to their next year of training or graduated to the next phase of their careers. As well, a total of 14 new physicians have agreed to work here full time in the past year – and many more will be joining us as the year goes on. This success in recruitment could not have been accomplished without the tireless support of the Royal Inland Hospital Foundation. Under the leadership of Heidi Coleman, the Foundation has petersonlanding.com worked hard to provide the necessary logistics and coordination that has made these hirings possible. It includes things as small as picking visiting physicians up at the airport, and things as large as finding them a place to stay. The Foundation also supports the purchase of vital equipment and computer software to help us successfully provide quality patient care at RIH. By helping to support the recruitment of new physicians in this way, the Royal Inland Hospital Foundation is also helping to build a great new medical staff, and this new medical staff will lead Kamloops to better, smarter, faster health care. So, I want to be sure to say a sincere thank you to Heidi and everyone who works at the Royal Inland Hospital Foundation for helping to make this past year one of the best years yet. Simon Treissman, MD FRCSC RIH Chief of Staff

5 RIH FOUNDATION – COMMUNITY CONNECTION 2016/17
It
has been quite a year for Royal Inland Hospital! Last year, we were fortunate to open the Clinical Services Building and, with it, embrace new opportunities for patient care and education thanks to our new Ken Lepin Lecture Theatre, Rae Fawcett Simulation Centre, and the Rae Fawcett Breast Health Clinic. We would not have those, or several other new pieces of equipment, both large and small throughout the hospital, without the generous contributions of donors to the RIH Foundation. I am grateful for this tremendous ongoing community partnership! But we know the Foundation’s work goes beyond meeting equipment needs. It also provides the means for our staff and physicians to succeed and grow every day. Nowhere has that been more apparent than in our mentorship program, which supports new nurses as they transition into practice, with the goals of increased retention, providing quality of care, and building leadership among staff. The Foundation was instrumental in our ability to pilot this program last year, and I’m pleased to say we will continue to offer it this year as well. On behalf of our employees, physicians and, most importantly, our patients, I wish
Tracey Rannie, RIH Health Service Administrator and Simon Treissman, RIH Chief of Staff
to sincerely thank Heidi Coleman and her team for the Foundation’s ongoing commitment to patient care at RIH. The work they do allows us to provide quality health-care services to patients across the IH region.
My thanks as well to all the residents and corporations in our community who support the RIH Foundation – you really do make a difference! Tracey Rannie, Health Service Administrator RIH

6 RIH FOUNDATION – COMMUNITY CONNECTION 2016/17
As
we began to reflect on the past year at the Royal Inland Hospital Foundation, we were both struck by a positive and powerful emotion— gratitude. Gratitude can be defined as the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness. This feeling is something we at the Foundation try to express on a daily basis to the generous donors who support our work in the hospital. This is probably the best part of our jobs! But, gratitude can also be found throughout the hospital: Patients or family members might thank a doctor or nurse who has shown them exceptional compassion or care during a difficult time. Or perhaps a team is grateful to a colleague for staying late to assist with a challenging case or heavy workload. Regardless of how or where this gratitude is expressed, the most important part of gratitude is that it IS demonstrated in one way or another. Without expressing your gratitude, this wonderful feeling cannot be shared or passed along. Did we mention that we think gratitude is contagious? Yes! Studies show that the more gratitude is expressed, the more others around you will feel grateful too. Research is also showing that gratitude can be good for your health and even part of the healing process for some patients. This Annual Report is one way which we try to demonstrate our tremendous gratitude to the donors, supporters, medical team, support staff and so many others that are involved with ensuring the best health care possible in our community. Over the past year, we have shared many moments of appreciation and thanks with our donors. Just to name a few: the opening of the Ken Lepin Lecture Theatre; the opening of both the Rae Fawcett Simulation Centre and Rae Fawcett Breast Health Clinic; the inaugural Zimmer Auto Lotto and the last Kamloops Amazing Race; the $417 million Patient Care Tower announcement; and many more. Our fundraising efforts have benefited a variety of areas of the hospital including
the Mental Health Unit, Emergency Department, Pediatrics, Cardiac Services and more. We have also provided important professional development scholarships to RIH staff and work closely with the hospital to help recruit new physicians to our city. We hope you will enjoy learning more about the accomplishments of our donors, staff and community in this publication. If these stories inspire you, please share this with your family or friends. We will all surely benefit from more gratitude in our lives and welcome you to join the RIHF circle of supporters! With great appreciation and good health, Heidi Coleman, CEO RIH Foundation and Eric Davis, Board Chair RIH Foundation

ICCHA/Wish Fund Celebrates $500,000 Milestone
I
t was a milestone year for the ICCHA/Wish Fund as they hit the half a million dollar mark for their total funds raised for Royal Inland Hospital. As Al Patel, the Founder of ICCHA/ Wish explains, “Back in 2007, we started the fund to make improvements to the health of our community – never imagining that 10 years later we would have made a difference to so many areas of our hospital. We are grateful to our many generous supporters who have joined us in our cause.” Most recently, ICCHA/ Wish raised funds for a portable ultrasound to be used for a number
Directors of the ICCHA/Wish Fund with RIH Manager Donna Lineker and a new EMG Acquisition Station for patients at RIH purchased last year.
of antenatal (during pregnancy) procedures and for educational purposes. This ultrasound will both free up diagnostic imagining resources at RIH and help to further expand professional development opportunities in Kamloops
– critical in the education of UBC students and residents, and in helping with physician recruitment. The RIH Foundation appreciates all of the Iccha/ Wish Fund supporters who are making such a positive impact at our hospital.
Nurse Mentorship Pilot Project a Success
R
oyal Inland Hospital typically hires 50 to 70 new graduate nurses every year. For these new nurses, RIH is a dynamic and sometimes intense health care environment and can be challenging for a new graduate. Without proper support and training, the hospital risks losing new nurses to other types of nursing outside the hospital setting. Last year, concerned with support for new nurses, Meagan Hanson, Director of Health Services and Andrea Burrows, Staff Development Educator at RIH, developed a pilot mentorship program at RIH to help ensure newly graduated nurses made a successful transition into a nursing role at our hospital.
4.5 Million Canadians qualify for a disability tax credit. It’s your tax money, it’s our job to get it back for you.
Launched in 2016, the Foundation contributed to the start-up costs associated with the project which included a two day workshop for the 10 nurse mentors who volunteered to participate in the project. The mentors were then matched with new nurse “mentees” and met with them on a monthly basis. In June 2017, the pilot project team celebrated the successful completion of the program for their first intake of new nurses. The goal is to continue to offer the program on an ongoing basis and create a lasting culture of learning, support and leadership for nurses at RIH.
Inaugural Arlene Bourassa NICU Scholarship Awarded
A
fter visiting the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and meeting staff at RIH last year, local philanthropist, Arlene Bourassa approached the Foundation with the idea of funding a scholarship specific to nurses working in the NICU who care for preterm infants as young as 30 weeks gestation. Specialty training is required to work in this department and the NICU team is continually upgrading their skills to ensure infants receive the best care possible. In June 2017, the Foundation’s Scholarship Committee was pleased to select RN Paula Tommasini to receive the first Arlene Bourassa NICU Scholarship. In her role as the Educator for the NICU, Paula is responsible for ensuring the NICU team receives the training they need, particularly when new equipment or standards of care are introduced to the department. Reviewing each patient’s case with the care team is another important aspect of her role, which helps ensure staff learn from each experience and feel supported by their team. Paula plans to attend an upcoming medical conference and also pursue leadership training which she believes will help her grow in her current role as Educator and will also contribute to patient care excellence for the entire department.
Scholarship donor Arlene Bourassa pictured with recipient, Paula Tommasini. Arlene is passionate about contributing to family-centred care for infants at RIH. She also supports a nursing scholarship in the area of pediatric oncology at the University of Calgary.

State-Of-The-Art Ken Lepin Lecture Theatre Opens at RIH
M
arch 10, 2017 marked the official opening of the Ken Lepin Lecture Theatre at Royal Inland. Named in honour of local philanthropist Ken Lepin, the leading-edge theatre brings a new level of educational opportunities and innovation to RIH. When asked why he chose to support the theatre project, Ken explains: “I wanted to leave a legacy at RIH that will have a long lasting impact on the medical staff. The health care team at RIH is incredible and they deserve a beautiful space for learning and collaborating.” The lecture-style seating accommodates more than 120 people and the technology includes two massive projector screens, videoconferencing capabilities and microphones
at each seat. The theatre is already attracting new medical conferences to Kamloops which the hospital could not previously accommodate due to space and technology limitations. With both TRU nursing students and UBC students and medical residents training at RIH, the hospital has quickly transformed itself into a new medical education hub in our city. Physicians, medical professionals, nurses and students will now have greater access to learning opportunities which directly contributes to patient care excellence throughout the hospital and our community. *For more information on how you can “Save your Seat” please call the Foundation office at 250314-2325
Thank you to the many generous donors to the “Save me a Seat” campaign in support of medical education at RIH. Each donor received a dedicated plaque in the Ken Lepin Lecture Theatre so they can always find their “seat” in the theatre.
Auto Lotto Drives Successful Fundraising Campaign Originally, we were going to write a cheque for $50,000. Then I thought, if we donate a car, we can potentially raise over $125,000 for the Foundation. So, that was our goal. - Rob Zimmer
Mercedes-Benz Kamloops Thank you Rob Zimmer, Owner of Zimmer Autogroup for your incredible generosity! Rob is pictured here with the 2017 Auto Lotto’s Grand Prize, a 2016 Mercedez-Benz CLA2504M.
This year the RIH Foundation celebrated the success of the inaugural Zimmer Autogroup- Luxury Auto Lotto with $130,000 being raised in support of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at RIH. Rob Zimmer generously donated a 2016 MercedezBenz CLA2504M, valued at over $58,300 which gave the
Foundation the opportunity to sell tickets for the chance to win the luxury vehicle. With over $130,000 raised and $62,797 worth of donated prizes given away, the campaign exceeded expectations and was able to significantly support the purchase of critical care equipment in the NICU.

Gratitude Leads to Generous Gift James and Jessie Fedorak
J
ames and Jessie Fedorak appreciate the care offered at RIH to the people of Kamloops and the surrounding region. That’s why it was difficult to pick just one piece of equipment to purchase when they asked to see a list of priority equipment two years ago. Instead, the Fedoraks decided to make a multi-year pledge that would fund a variety of pieces of equipment needed throughout the hospital. Four new cystoscopes were purchased for the Urology Department at RIH which are used to examine the inside of patients’ bladders, urethra and prostate. The new scopes have a much brighter and clearer image which enhances the visualization
of vessels and other tissues. The HD scopes also allow the patients, nurses and medical students to view the procedure on a screen which provides a new learning opportunity for staff, students and medical residents training at RIH. The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) also benefitted from the Fedoraks’ generosity with the addition of a new defibrillator and fluid management system (Belmont Rapid Infuser). For trauma patients, the Belmont system allows medical staff to quickly replace blood loss and also helps raise the internal body temperature of these patients who often arrive cold. It is also critical to warm trauma patients before they enter
surgery as complications such as coagulation can result when operating on a patient with a low internal temperature. Additionally, the Fedoraks enabled the introduction of new technology at our hospital with the purchase of a Fibroscan machine which provides doctors with a non-invasive and painless technique for monitoring the condition of
a patient’s liver. It is a simple alternative to liver biopsy which can have serious risk associated with it. Fibroscan exam results can help to anticipate various complications, as well as to monitor and assess damage caused by conditions such as cirrhosis. The examination is quick, easy and can be safely repeated as needed for each patient.

I
n June, the Foundation celebrated the opening of the Rae Fawcett Breast Health Clinic within the new Clinical Services Building at RIH. Working closely with the Diagnostic Imaging department, Laboratory Services and the General Surgery team at RIH, the Rae Fawcett Breast Health Clinic aims to reduce patient wait times between an initial mammogram and possible breast cancer diagnosis. Led by Dr. Liz Ewart, the Clinic is staffed by a team of family physicians, a patient care coordinator and administrative support staff. Funding from the community was crucial to the opening of the clinic. The Foundation approached Ron and Rae Fawcett about the possibility of a breast health clinic opening at RIH and Rae wasted no time in getting involved with an incredible pledge of $1 million to the hospital. Other donors who were involved in the clinic’s success include: The Can-Ital Ladies, The Pink Ribbon Ball (Anthony Salituro and committee), Amazing Race Kamloops (Todd and Nadine Torchia) and the Foundation’s own Dancing Like the Stars sponsors, volunteers and guests. The official opening date of the Rae Fawcett Breast Health Clinic was May 30, 2017. Patients are now offered a clinical examination with a physician, diagnostic imaging (including ultrasound and/or mammography), and if necessary tissue sampling or biopsy that day or the next. Results are shared with the patient that day whenever possible or the following week when a biopsy is required.

Staff Show Their Support A Royally United Campaign and Staff Lottery
T
he amazing health care team and staff at RIH not only provide exceptional patient care, they also give back to the hospital in a variety of ways. In 2016, the Foundation in partnership with the local United Way created a new workplace campaign called “Royally United.” Staff at RIH were encouraged to support the campaign by signing up to make contributions through payroll deductions. All donations collected will support priority needs and staff education at RIH and United Way programs that promote healthy living. The Stollery Charitable Foundation and Davis Wealth Management kindly provided matching gifts to the RIH Foundation and United Way to help kick off this new campaign and encourage staff to join. The Foundation Lottery is grateful for the support of the RIH staff who continue to make the hospital lottery a huge success! The lottery is a 50/50 style draw held in the cafeteria every 2 weeks with jackpots reaching as much as $3,400 in recent months. Started by the Evening Auxiliary and handed over to the Foundation in 2015, the staff lottery raised over $65,000 last year in support of patient care equipment.

Two Auxiliaries = Twice the Support for Patient Care
T
he Afternoon and Evening Auxiliaries to Royal Inland Hospital are comprised of caring and dedicated volunteers donating their time and energy to fundraise for vital equipment at Royal Inland Hospital. With two auxiliaries to RIH, there is twice the opportunity to fundraise. The Evening Auxiliary holds a Craft-A-Fair annually, selling unique handcrafted items. They also lease the space for Sacred Grounds coffee shop, rent TVs, and run
vending machines. Not only are these great fundraising opportunities, but they make the hospital a more comfortable place. The Afternoon Auxiliary showcases their great entrepreneurial skills as they own and run the Gift Shop in RIH and the Thrift Seller on Victoria Street. They also give local entrepreneurs the opportunity to sell their products through the Vendor Program, where 15% of their sales goes back to the Auxiliary.
In the past year, the Afternoon Auxiliary purchased over $313,000 in equipment. These funds provided 34 pieces of equipment and attachments, contributing to patient care throughout the hospital. Last year, the Evening Auxiliary purchased over $150,000 in equipment. This equipment has provided much needed support to the Respiratory Therapy department, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and Maternity Unit in RIH. Members of the Afternoon Auxiliary present new equipment to staff at RIH.

Rae Fawcett Simulation Centre Provides New Training Opportunities
T
he Rae Fawcett Simulation Centre, located in the Clinical Services Building at RIH, is providing the local medical team and students with a new level of health care training. The simulation centre is designed to look and function like a real patient room in the hospital with the same equipment and tools available to care for patients. State-of-the-art patient simulators are used to make the training scenarios as realistic as possible. Controlled by the trainer from a separate room, the simulator “patient” can talk, breathe, accept medication and will react to treatment accordingly. A large monitor on the wall shows the simulator’s vitals to the team so they know how their patient is doing. The Simulation Centre opened in 2016 with two simulators: an adult patient named “Alex” as well as a pediatric doll known as “Casey”. Since then, two additional simulators have been added: a pregnant simulator, “Victoria”, who can give birth as well as a smaller resuscitation doll “Annie” who can be transported to different areas of the hospital with ease to practice CPR and even mock codes. The simulators all provide users with a score on their CPR delivery and feedback for improving CPR. This is critical to patient care, as evidence has shown that high-quality CPR and early defibrillation are key to saving lives in a cardiac arrest situation. “Simulation training also offers staff and students the opportunity

to improve their ability to work as a team in a stressful situation,” explains Chelsea Holmes, the Regional Knowledge Coordinator for the IH Simulation Program in Kamloops. “Communication between staff can be crucial when caring for a seriously ill patient and the simulations provide staff and medical students with a safe environment for learning.” Rae Fawcett was thrilled to have the opportunity to support a new place of learning at RIH. “It is a great honour to have my name attached to the simulation centre. I know it will save lives.”

n 2017, the South Central Trucking & Industry (SCT&I) Golf Tournament celebrated their 20th annual event, benefitting RIH. For two decades, SCT&I has held one of the most successful golf tournaments in Kamloops— raising over $2 million in 20 years. With 130 golfers, many returning players and dedicated sponsors played in this year’s 20th anniversary tournament; along with a chance to win a $1 million hole-in-one, skydivers landed on the golf course to help mark the occasion. The success of this tournament is really in the hands of the devoted committee members who volunteer countless hours to ensure the tournament is a success each year. Care Extends Beyond Hospital Stay
R
oyal Inland Hospital provides acute level care to Kamloops and the surrounding region. But, what happens when a patient is ready to leave the hospital but not quite ready to go home? Or requires ongoing outpatient care? What other services and clinics are available for patients to prevent a return visit to the hospital? These questions are an important part of the continuum of care provided by Interior Health in Kamloops. Working with RIH staff and our donors, the Foundation is committed to ensuring patients receive the care they need at the hospital, but we know the road to recovery can be long and often extends beyond a stay at RIH. There are a wide variety of outpatient clinics both in the community and at RIH that provide patients with important care
that reduces the number of patients that require a trip to the Emergency Department or need to be re-admitted to RIH. One of these critical outpatient clinics, located in the Clinical Services Building, is the infectious Disease (ID) Clinic led by Dr. Kevin Laupland, an Intensivist and Infectious Diseases specialist, who launched the Clinic in 2014 with a small team that included Joyce Bader, Outpatient Parenteral Therapy (OPT) Coordinator and pharmacists Ayesha Hassan and Anna Folk. Since then, the Infectious Diseases Clinic and OPT team has grown quickly and in 2016 more than 1,000 patients were managed by the team. A second Infectious Diseases specialist, Dr. Elizabeth Parfitt, joined in 2015. Two Registered Nurses (RNs) and a pharmacy team also contribute to the
provision of comprehensive ID services. The ID Clinic and OPT program has had a tremendous impact on the hospital and most importantly, is improving the quality of life for many of their patients. Patients who are referred to the ID Clinic are less likely to go to the Emergency Department with infections and inpatients are able to be discharged earlier and have their therapy on an outpatient basis. Patients are able to start treatments earlier, avoiding hospital admission and have fewer unnecessary or longer-term IV therapy treatments due to the specialized assessment by the multidisciplinary team. Last year, the ID Clinic received its first significant donation from a grateful patient, Kenneth Strand, who wanted to invest in the long-term success of the clinic. Kenneth, along with his wife, Elna, appreciated the care he received from Dr. Laupland and directed their gift to the ID Clinic to help ensure they have the tools and resources they need to provide patient-focused, highquality care. “The team is very grateful for Kenneth and Elna’s support,” explains Dr. Laupland. “To have a patient show their gratitude with a donation designated to the ID Clinic is a huge compliment to our team and will ultimately help us provide even more services and care for our patients.”
Pictured (left to right): Rodger Smeeton, Ayesha Hassan, Dr. Kevin Laupland, Andrea Berseth, Joyce Bader, and Dr. Elizabeth Parfitt. The (ID) clinic team helps keep patients out of the Emergency Department and reduces length of hospital stay.

B
Local Miner with Heart of Gold
orn in Denmark, Mathias (who went by “Matt”) came to Canada when he was 22 years old and worked on farms across the Prairies until he reached the Fraser Valley. He began a career in mining on Vancouver Island before moving to Kamloops and working at Afton Mines until his retirement in the early 1990s. An active outdoorsman, Matt enjoyed a wide variety of sports and volunteered his time with many clubs and events. One of his many volunteer jobs included driving cancer patients to Kelowna for their radiation treatments. Music and dancing
were also an important part of his life. After being diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, Matt moved from his home at Paul Lake to Kamloops where he was able to continue participating in many activities and sports that he had enjoyed over the years. He loved going to the Kamloops YMCA where he was a long-time member. Although he didn’t have any pets of his own, Matt was an animal lover and liked to drop off a donation at the local SPCA before the holidays every year – he called this his “Christmas shopping”. Matt chose to leave his entire estate to three charities that held special meaning
to him: Royal Inland Hospital Foundation, BC SPCA and the YMCA of Canada. His good friends, Len and Heather Short and Judy Kinloch, described Matt as having a quiet, gentle soul. He lived a humble life, but through his generous nature has left a lasting legacy at Royal Inland Hospital that will be felt for years to come. For more information on making a bequest in your will to the Royal Inland Hospital Foundation, please contact Alisa Coquet at: alisa.coquet@interiorhealth.ca or by phone at: 250-314-2836.
*Sadly, Len Short passed away in August, 2017 after a long battle with cancer. Len was much loved by his family and friends and will be greatly missed.
