PLAN A WEEKEND FAMILY GETAWAY Weekend getaways can provide great bonding opportunities for families. During the week, families may be too preoccupied with hectic schedules packed with sports practices, extracurricular activities and work commitments to get much quality time together. That makes the weekend an ideal time to step away from the hustle and bustle and enjoy some time together as families. When planning weekend getaways, parents may benefit from employing a few strategies that can turn their trips into the perfect escapes from the daily grind. Here are some tips: • Don’t stray too far from home. Weekend getaways can provide respites from the stress of everyday life. Spending much of the weekend in the car likely won’t provide the relief that families are seeking, so parents should keep location in mind when planning their getaways. Choose somewhere close to home so as little time as possible is spent in the car, leaving more time for fun and relaxation. • Find fun activities. Getaways are more enjoyable when families find fun things to do. Simply getting away to somewhere peaceful might work if parents are going it alone, but youngsters may quickly grow bored and retreat into their devices if there’s nothing fun to do. Before booking lodging for the weekend, parents can research weekend festivals, area parks where families can hike, swim or kayak together, or other activities. • Don’t overbook the weekend. While it’s important to find some fun activities for weekend getaways, parents should avoid overbooking the weekend. Many families enjoy weekend getaways for the respite from the often hectic daily grind they endure during the week. Overbooking a weekend getaway may make such trips less relaxing than parents intend them to be. One familyfriendly activity per day should suffice and still afford families ample time to relax and enjoy one another’s company.
• Avoid Friday rush hour. If possible, families should try to depart for their destinations a little early on Friday. By leaving before the start of Friday rush hour, families can avoid traffic and ensure their
trips start off on the right foot. • Pack light. Weekend getaways likely won’t require too much packing. A two- or three-day excursion should not be treated like a weeks-long overseas
vacation. Packing light makes it easy to get on the road and then get back on the road when the time comes to go home. Only parents with babies in tow may need to pack more than seems reasonable for
short getaways. Babies may need swimming diapers, noise machines to help them sleep, bottle warmers, extra bottles and jars, and extra clothing. Packing those items can save parents the trouble of having
Spring 2018
to track them down once they arrive at their destinations. Weekend getaways can provide busy families with great respites from their often hectic weekly schedules.

INTO THE WILD FOR THE ADVENTURE SEEKERS RIVER RAFTING In Kamloops, people can take a water-rafting trip suited to their interests — extreme, casual or novice. Take a motorized-raft trip or enjoy a paddle trip and really get involved with the river. It depends on how much excitement someone wants. There are three rivers to raft in Kamloops country — the Thompson, Adams and Clearwater. A variety of companies, some with 20 years or more experience, spend six months a year guiding rafters of all skill levels. THOMPSON RIVER Those who want to experience the Thompson usually start at Spences Bridge and end at Lytton, the Rafting Capital of Canada. Guide your raft through rapids with names like the Frog, The Devil’s Kitchen and the Jaws of Death.
ADAMS RIVER The Adams, near Shuswap Lake, is a wonderful starting point for both first-timers and experienced rafters. The Weir, the Ender Waves and especially the Gorge, where the river spills through a narrow canyon, are breathtaking. CLEARWATER RIVER Rush down the Clearwater in Wells Gray Park, past volcanoes, lava rock formations, lush forests and spectacular waterfalls. The region is an unspoiled wilderness and is one of the best-kept secrets in B.C. BACKCOUNTRY RIDING Experience the best when riding at Stake and Inks Lake. Located 25 minutes south of Kamloops, these 45 kilometres of marked trails are great for family rides.
Inks Lake is also a popular riding area with locals and visitors and is suitable for more experienced riders.
Directions to Stake Lake: Take Exit 366 from Highway 1/Highway 5 in Kamloops and follow Lac Le Jeune
Road south. Park near Stake Lake. Trails are to your right. Directions to Inks
Lake: Take Exit 355 on the Coquihalla Highway, 10 minutes from Kamloops, or take Lac Le Jeune Road.

BUYING A FUEL-EFFICIENT VEHICLE? Everyone needs a break these days and that includes saving money when you buy a new vehicle. Think about buying the most fuel-efficient one that meets your needs to save money at the pumps and also maximizes savings over the long haul. The money you save could go towards that dream vacation or big screen TV that you have always wanted. The experts at Natural Resources Canada have put together these tips to help you make an informed decision: 1. Do some research before you leave home: The NRCan website, www.vehicles.nrcan.gc.ca, has a fuel consumption ratings search tool to help you compare the fuel consumption ratings of various years, makes and models of vehicles. 2. Check out the EnerGuide Label: Compare vehicles using
the EnerGuide label that is found on all new cars and light trucks. The label shows city and highway fuel consumption ratings and the
estimated annual fuel cost for that particular vehicle model. 3. Choose a vehicle that fits your everyday needs in

terms of size and power: Put some serious thought into your space and cargo needs — do you really need a minivan when a compact
would do? Passenger cars with smaller engines tend to deliver better fuel consumption than those with larger engines.
4. Two-wheel drive vs. four-wheel drive: The added weight and drive train losses you get with four-wheel and ‘all-wheel’ drive systems increase fuel consumption. Although allwheel drive can offer better traction when accelerating under slippery conditions, it doesn’t assist in braking; there is no substitute for safe driving habits. 5. Think about your extras: Accessories and power features can be a big drag on an engine, increasing fuel consumption. How much do you really need all those gizmos? Are they worth the increased fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions? By following these tips and doing your homework, you can watch your savings add up and your greenhouse gas emissions go down. — newscanada.com

REDUCE INSTANCES OF DISTRACTED DRIVING Distracted driving is a problem that results in injuries and claims the lives of thousands of people each year. Allstate says distracted driving is now the No. 1 risk on Canadian roads, contributing to eight in 10 collisions. It is relatively easy to avoid becoming a statistic by reducing distractions behind the wheel:
Just like other devices, GPS can be a distraction, especially if drivers are taking their eyes off the road and constantly pressing buttons on the map. Enter the destination address before departing and place the GPS in a position that it can be glanced at, which will not impede vision. Better yet, let a passenger navigate.
Put away tech devices One of the easiest ways to reduce distractions is to keep phones and tablets out of reach while driving. Sending or reading a text message takes a driver’s eyes off of the road for about five seconds, or long enough to cover a football field while driving at 90 km/h. It removes a person’s attention from the road, takes his or her hands off of the wheel and mentally engages the brain when a driver’s focus
Limit or skip phone calls Many people find that making phone calls while on the road is an efficient use of time. Yet even when drivers use hands-free devices, their brains can remain distracted for 27 seconds after using voice commands to dial a number. Engaging in phone conversations will continue to take drivers’ minds off of their driving responsibilities.
should be on driving. Devices should be stowed away when driving. Drivers should pull over if they need to send a text or
read a message. Set the GPS ahead of a trip Global positioning systems have revolutionized
the way motorists get to and from locations. They can help signal upcoming traffic and find the best routes possible.
Drowsy driving is
dangerous Being tired can be a distraction as well. Drowsiness increases the risk of a crash by roughly four times. Those who become drowsy behind the wheel should pull over. Skip the infotainment package New vehicle infotainment systems can take one’s attention off of the road for long periods of time. According to research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, drivers using in-vehicle technologies like voice-based and touch-screen features may find themselves unusually distracted. In addition to these tips, drivers can reduce the number of passengers contributing to distractions, turn down the volume on the radio, and pull over when eating on the road. Reducing distractions can save lives.

A BEGINNERS GUIDE TO ELECTRIC VEHICLES Electric or hybrid vehicles can be smart additions to eco-friendly lifestyles. Although such cars were once science fiction, EVs are now increasingly more common and traversing roadways around the world. Thanks to several mainstream brands offering EVs and hybrid models, consumers are more informed than ever before about the benefits of a plugged-in ride. Still, even with the wealth of information available, some people still may be unsure about what owning an EV entails and how
to make informed decisions when shopping for such vehicles. Going electric means thinking beyond the gas station. Here’s how to navigate the ins and outs of EVs: • Type of vehicle: First consider that not all EVs are the same. Hybrid vehicles use a mix of gasoline and electricity and tend to have long fuel ranges. All-electric cars will only use electricity that is gained through charging the vehicle for a certain period of time. • Affordability: Consumers can expect to pay more for electric and
hybrid vehicles than gaspowered vehicles. But as demand increases, costs may drop. According to a report from USA Today, estimates point to EVs as being as affordable as gas vehicles by 2021. Another consideration is there may be tax incentives for purchasing an EV. Speak with a tax professional to see if this is applicable. • Environmental savings: Electric cars produce no emissions from the tailpipe and reduce dependency on oil-based fuels. Furthermore, EVs will not need oil changes or emis-
sions checks that traditional cars require, further saving resources. The resource Plug in Cars says EVs can also save on fuel costs, ranging at two cents per kilometre traveled, compared to 12 cents for gas-fueled vehicles. • Fill-ups: EVs can be charged at home using personal charging kits or at charging stations in the neighbourhood. Charge times will depend on the size of the vehicle and its battery. The typical time for an all-electric car using a standard home wall socket is between six and eight
hours. Some new EVs can be charged in 30 minutes to an hour at rapid charging points. • Solar + EVs = savings: Consumer Reports advises that when EVs are combined with home solar systems, “fuel” costs can be completely eliminated. That financial gain can be a big motivator for some consumers. • Short trips: Individuals who travel 130 kilometres or less per day may find pure electric vehicles advantageous. Those who have to go further should consider hybrids that offer greater
range. However, Tesla, Chevy and Nissan EVs have recently moved beyond the 320-kilometre range before requiring a charge. • Charging stations: ChargeHub, with information from the Canadian Automobile Association, states there are a total of 6,473 EV chargers across Canada, including 25 in Kamloops. Seventy-six per cent of the ports are level 2 charging ports and 48 per cent of the ports offer free charges for your electric car. The two main charging networks in operation are Sun Country Highway and Tesla.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT BUYING A BOAT When the weather starts to warm and more and more people start taking their boats out of dry dock and back to the marina, such sights can entice others to want to buy a boat. After all, the idea of sailing under the sun on the water with friends and family is something everyone can appreciate. However, sailing season might not be the ideal time to buy a boat if you’re interested in getting the best deal. Actually, sailing’s offseason is oftentimes the best time to buy a boat. Many boat retailers look to liquefy their inventories in early fall. At this point you may be able to negotiate a very good deal on the previous model year since the dealerships will be making room for the next year’s models. Coming equipped with a list of questions and armed with the knowledge of the average cost of the boat you
want to buy can help you determine if the quoted prices are discounted. Another ideal time to go boat shopping is during the boat show season. Boat manufacturers tend to do a series of shows at con-
vention centers across the country. The retailers often come up with a discounted price and other incentives on the purchase of a boat because they know they’ll be appealing to the thousands of people who attend
the show. These prices may be even lower than the price offered for the same model just a few days later in the showroom. Even if you are not in the immediate market for a boat, attending a boat show
can be a good source of information and practice for buying one down the road. It will also enable you to see a great number of different styles and manufacturers of boats all under one roof. Most of the time you are able to board the boat and look at all the features offered. Here are some other tips when deciding whether or not to buy a boat: • Be sure to go out boating with friends or with a family member who owns a boat and determine whether this is really a recreational activity you want to invest in. • Take into consideration all of the expenses involved in boating, including insurance, trailering, docking, marina fees, fuel, safety gear, tech items, and so on. Some have said that buying a boat is like pouring money into the water. Know what you are getting into before
Spring 2018
signing on the dotted line. • Shop around for a good boat dealer. You want someone with whom you feel comfortable and not a dealer who is just pressuring you to buy. • Struggling dealerships may offer “must buy now”offers to try to get rid of boats that are not selling. Choose the boat that works for you and not the one with the smallest price tag. • Due to the large expense of buying a boat, many choose to go partners on the purchase. Spell out a contract that explains when and how you will have your share of the vessel before entering into a joint purchase. This way you remain friends instead of fighting over usage, cleaning and the cost of repairs. Boating can be a rewarding recreational activity. Purchase a boat after doing your research and look around for the best deal.

LICENSED TO SAIL
In B.C. and throughout Canada you must have a boat licence in order to operate most water vessels. All boaters operating in B.C. waters are required to have a Pleasure Craft Operator Card. Powered watercraft includes boats fitted with any size motor — even an electric motor. Boaters operating a vessel without an operating card are subject to a $250 fine. The good news, however, is licensing in B.C. and throughout Canada is relatively easy. ASM Safe Boating, a national boating educator, encourages boaters in all provinces to take a Transport Canada Accredited course to obtain the canadian boating licence (officially known as a Pleasure Craft Operator Card). ASM Safe Boating, through its partnership with BoaterExam.com, offers Transport Canada accredited courses and certification for the Canadian Pleasure Craft Operator Card. Take the test The boating licence course requires three hours of study time. The Boating Licence Course includes: • Approximately three hours of classroom learning designed for both the experienced and novice boater ages eight years and up. • The Transport Canada approved exam at the end of the course. • A temporary Pleasure Craft Operator Card issued on-site. • A permanent Pleasure Craft Operator Card mailed within three weeks. You only pay for your Boating Licence Exam once. If you don’t pass, you can try the exam again at no additional charge. Get certified through BoaterExam.com. Sample Questions Think you know your stuff? Here are some sample questions from BoaterExam.com’s practice test. Find more online. When a storm hits while a vessel is underway, the operator should do which of the following? a) Take waves from the port or starboard side, never head on. b) Ensure that all those onboard are wearing a † personal flotation device. c) Keep all electrical equipment plugged in — even if lightning is present. d) Shift all passengers to the highest point onboard the boat. Other than seeking medical treatment, what is the best treatment for a hypothermia victim? † a) Hot coffee. b) Slow warming. c) Vigorous massage. d) Hot bath. What is the purpose of the H.E.L.P. position? a) Allows the person to float better. b) Slows the loss of heat from the body’s core. c) Easier to find the victim. d) Prevents the PFD from coming off. What is the purpose of having a safety lanyard onboard a personal watercraft (like a SeaDoo)? a) To keep the operator from falling overboard. b) To keep a throwable PFD from falling overboard. c) To stop the engine if the operator falls overboard. d) To stop the operator from losing his or her keys.
