13TH ANNUAL YMCA

Designed for

Girlsrlbsy Gi

October 17, 2018 • Tournament Capital Centre 8:30am-3:00pm • Lunch included!

The Kamloops YMCA-YWCA (Violence Against Women Intervention & Support Services Department), is pleased to present the 13th annual Power of Being a Girl Conference on October 18th, 2017. This one-day conference for girls aged 12 to 14 years old, is designed by girls, for girls (in the annual spring workshop: PBG Planning Girls Group) to explore the challenges of growing up, in a fun and empowering way. Girls ARE powerful and our interactive workshops will explore the healthy ways girls can find, keep, and share that power. Participants can register through the Kamloops YMCA-YWCA. For registration, please call 250-372-7725 or 250-554-9622. Registration for this no cost event begins September 1, 2018!

CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS

Dance Into Tomorrow

Whether you like jazz, hip hop, ballet or just like to DANCE – this workshop is for you. Get your body moving with easy-to-follow dance moves, raise your heartrate, and have fun. We will be checking in with our bodies and how movement makes us feel. Did you know that dancing improves your brain function and can totally change your mood? Come dance with us and experience it first hand. Don’t forget your runners!

Defining MY Girl

What is it to be a girl? This workshop will challenge the ideas of what it is to be a girl, breaking gender norms, and how girls represent themselves in today’s world. We will be discussing gender roles and stereotypes that still exist. Take a polaroid picture of yourselves and create a piece of art that represent who YOU are without the constraints of societal norms.

Out of Con"text”

Technology doesn’t just impact us personally, it effects our relationships and our friendships. It can create disconnectedness to your world and the people that are around you. We will discuss how texting, social media, and email effects each of us, creating a mask with two sides: one side would portray what we present to the others through technology, and the other side would represent the “real” person, without those influences.

Live Your Dream

A workshop that encourages you to follow your dreams, and to believe in yourself! We will talk about intension setting and how achieving these requires focus and determination. Decorate a pillow case that is representative of your dreams and serve as a reminder that you are capable of anything if you put your minds to it.

Growing Self

Taking care of plants is a lot like taking care of your own body. You need to provide it with the correct nutrition, natural elements and care to make it flourish. Our plan is to make little terrariums with plants that you can take home as a reminder to practice self care. Tied into this activity will be a discussion around recognizing stressors, healthy coping mechanisms and general self care.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

The YMCA-YWCA Violence Against Women Intervention & Support Services (VAWISS) offers this full day conference at no cost to the girls who attend during the YWCA Canada’s Week Without Violence (October 15th to 21st, 2018). There are many opportunities for members of our community to provide support for the Power of Being a Girl Conference including: sponsoring a girl (it costs approximately $80 per girl), partnering with the Kamloops YMCA-YWCA or donating services or gifts in kind. Donations can be made at any Kamloops YMCA-YWCA or online! For further information please contact Jacquie Brand, VAWISS Director of Programs at 250-374-6162.
