Unplug and play just an hour east of Kamloops Cedar Creek Camp has plenty to offer visitors, and the facility is fully wheelchair accessible
C
edar Creek Camp at White Lake in the Shuswap is an ideal getaway for anyone looking to really disconnect. It’s a beautiful site on 10 acres near Tappen and Sorrento — about an hour east of Kamloops — with no electricity or running water. It’s also fully wheelchair accessible and that includes the
trails, the outhouses, the two cabins and more. “We just recently put in a $30,000 aluminum dock, which is safer when we’re working with wheelchairs and walkers,” said Kari Rubel, the director of education and programs for People In Motion, the organization that runs the camp. Those interested in visiting are encouraged to become People In
Motion members to rent the site. Members with disabilities get first dibs when bookings go live each January. Others can start booking in March. “There might be some midweeks available,” Rubel said of the current schedule. The smaller cabin has four bunk beds and sleeps four, while the larger cabin can sleep 10 on its main level and features a huge
upper loft that could fit another 10 or 15 people. If that’s not enough room for everyone, there is plenty of space for tents and campers. This year will mark the 30th anniversary of Cedar Creek Camp. Though People in Motion has traditionally closed Cedar Creek for the winter in October, Rubel said a wood stove will be installed in a cabin as part of plans to keep
the facility open through the snowy months for snowmobilers to use. The site is affordable and all money generated from its use goes back into maintaining and upgrading the site. “It supports the Shuswap area as well,” Rubel said. For more information on People In Motion and the Cedar Creek Cramp, go online to peopleinmotion.org.

SPRING SUMMER
2019
LIVE, BREATHE, ADVENTURE
Something for every adventure seeker RIVER RAFTING In the Kamloops area, people can take a waterrafting trip suited to their interests — extreme, casual or novice. Take a motorized-raft trip or enjoy a paddle trip and really get involved with the river. It depends on how much excitement someone wants. There are three rivers to raft in the region: Thompson, Adams and Clearwater. A variety of companies, some with more than two decades of experience, spend six months a year guiding rafters of all skill levels. Thompson River Those who want to experience the Thompson usually start at Spences Bridge and end at Lytton, the Rafting Capital of Canada. Guide your raft through rapids with names like the Frog, the Devil’s Kitchen and the Jaws of Death. Adams River The Adams, near Shuswap Lake, is a wonderful starting point for both first-timers and experienced rafters. The Weir, the Ender Waves and especially the Gorge, where the river spills through a narrow canyon, are breathtaking. Clearwater River Rush down the Clearwater in Wells Gray Provincial Park, past volcanoes, lava rock formations, lush forests and spectacular waterfalls. The region is an unspoiled wilderness and is one of the best-kept secrets in B.C.
2019 OUTBACK WELL-EQUIPPED FROM $32,460*
For a list of companies that offer rafting experiences, simply Google “rafting Kamloops” and a number of options will appear. Back-country riding Experience the best when riding at Stake and Inks lakes. Located 25 minutes south of Kamloops, the 45 kilometres of marked trails are great for family rides. Inks Lake is also a popular riding area with locals and visitors and is suitable for more experienced riders. Directions to Stake Lake: Take Exit 366 from Highway 1/Highway 5 in Kamloops and follow Lac Le Jeune Road south. Park near Stake Lake. Trails are to your right. Rocking on in the Thompson Valley Plenty to find in Kamloops-area hills
T
he outdoors can be a source of incredible beauty. From watching a sunrise or sunset, a lush green field or bursts of colour as flowers bloom in the spring, nature offers a panoramic vista of wonder. But the Kamloops Rock Club prefers to look down, rather than up. “Kamloops is central to a wonderfully diverse area for rockhounding,” said club member Dave Zirul. “Agates in various forms and colours are relatively plentiful and there is common opal, petrified wood and some very attractive mineral crystals.” Zirul suggests the north shore of Kamloops Lake — particularly around Cooney Bay, which is accessible via the frontage road through the Tranquille Farms property — as one location rock hunters might like to explore. “There are agates and other
interesting rocks in the beach gravels which are exposed and replenished each year by creek freshet and winter storms,” he said. “They make for an enjoyable outing at times of low water on the lake.” For more intensive rock hunts, Zirul encourages people to join one of the local rock clubs. In addition to the Kamloops Rock Club, there are the Thompson Valley Rock Club in Kamloops, the Raft River Rockhounds in Clearwater and or the Vernon Lapidary and Mineral Club. “Field trips organized by the clubs have had a wagon master attending to the necessary permissions from landowners and holders of grazing leases and mineral tenures,” Zirul said, noting they also provide an added measure of safety, convenience, knowledge and camaraderie. Contact information for the clubs is available through the BC Lapidary Society website at bclapidary.com.

Learning along the Indigenous ancestral trails MOCCASIN TRAILS TAKES YOUR FIVE SENSES ON A CULTURAL JOURNEY

here are plenty of lakes and trails to explore in the Thompson-Nicola region and many tour guides who can show you the ins and outs of the area. But there’s only one company that offers an authentic Indigenous tourism experience — Moccasin Trails. “What we offer is visitors to spend a day with us, or half of a day, on the ancestral trails of our people,” said Greg Hopf, coowner and operator of Moccasin Trails Inc. The company is entering its second year in 2019 and Hopf said it’s been incredibly successful. “It’s kind of blown my mind the response we’re getting,” he said. Moccasin Trails’ tours are unique because they include a traditional knowledge keeper, or elder, who will tell stories, sing
songs and help to immerse participants in Indigenous culture. “If you want to learn about our culture, you need to smell it, you need to taste it, you need to see it, you need to hear it,” Hopf said. “So it’s happening to all five senses. It’s letting visitors into our life.” There are three tours available from Moccasin Trails: A canoe trip from Lafarge Landing to Valleyview, another canoe outing from Valleyview to Riverside Park and a hiking journey around Coyote Rock that Hopf describes as a “leisurely hike.” The 2019 season will begin on May 1 and information on the tours, including team-building and corporate outings, and how to book them are available on Moccasin Trails’ website at moccasintrails.com. To get a better look at the experiences offered, you can follow the company on Instagram (@moccasintrails).
