FALL & WINTER 2019

Why not learn to ice fish at Walloper Lake? TODD SULLIVAN STAFF REPORTER todd@kamloopsthisweek.com

For 20 years, the Kamloops and District Fish and Game Association has been putting ice fishing rods in the hands of children and amateurs and helping them learn how to ice fish during its annual Introduction to Ice Fishing event. The next event will be held on Jan. 19, 2020, at Walloper Lake, just south of Kamloops. The event is intended for anyone new to

the sport of ice fishing and is entirely free of charge. No pre-registration is required, though people are asked to sign in when they arrive. The club does accept donations for baskets that are brought to the event. Mo Bradley has been behind the Introduction to Ice Fishing initiative for the past 15 years. “I think it’s a very special thing to do,” he said. “You start a child at 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and it carries on for the rest of their life.”

Bradley regularly crafts miniature ice fishing rods for children to use at the event, modifying traditional ice fishing rods to fit smaller fishers. The event is a great time to come out and try ice fishing for the first time as no licences are required . Kids can always fish without a licence, but adults require one during the rest of the year. Hamburgers, hot dogs and hot chocolate will be available for those participating and there will be a large bonfire to keep all the

fisher folk warm, though most probably won’t want to stray too far from their designated fishing holes and the opportunity to reel in a big one. The Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC has often donated ice fishing rods, reels and lines that are handed out as prizes to children at the event. The organization is also planning to provide ice fishing demonstrations. Bradley advises participants come dressed for the weather — and for a day out on a frozen lake.

FALL & WINTER 2019

Enjoy the outdoors — even when it’s cold The amount of time people spend outdoors has dramatically decreased, as the Environmental Protection Agency now reports the average person spends 87 percent of his or her time in a residence, school building or workplace. Being outside is linked to better moods, more physical activity and less exposure to contaminants (concentrations of some pollutants are often two to five times higher indoors). Also, people who spend time outside may not come into contact with surface germs or develop various illnesses spread as often as those who spend a lot of time indoors. Cold weather can make the desire to be outside less appealing, but it is important for one’s mental and physical well-being to get outside. The following activities might coax people outside for some crisp air. Create snow critters: Why do snowmen and women get all of the fanfare this time of year? Just about any living or fictional creature can be molded from snow and embellish landscapes. Use food-grade coloring in spray bottles to added even more creative flair to snow designs. Go on a nature hike: While many plants and animals hibernate in winter, there is still plenty to see. Bring along a sketch book or camera and capture nature in winter.

White-washed hills can be beautiful to behold, and many small animals and birds look even more vivid against the white backdrop of snow. Make an obstacle course: Turn an area of the yard or park into a homemade obstacle course. It’s much more difficult, — and a great workout — to try to jump over snow

This is how I feel when I order parts for my snowmobile...

mounds or run down paths when decked out in warm layers. Engage in lighthearted competitions with friends and family members. Build a bonfire: Children can set off in different directions to gather up firewood to craft a bonfire with adults in a safe location. S’mores taste equally delicious whether it’s

warm or cold outside, and in winter they can be accompanied by toasty mugs of cocoa. Get sporty: Sledding, skating, snowshoeing, and ice hockey are just a few of the winter sports that can get the heart pumping and muscles working outside. These activities are entertaining and also great exercise.

FALL & WINTER 2019

A winter Shuswap escape to Grizzly Lodge Grizzly Lodge, located about 50 kilometres north of Scotch Creek, provides some of the best backcountry snowmobiling that can be found — so much so, in fact, that you need to sled your way to the lodge. According to Irina Elkhova, Grizzly’s administration and marketing manager — whose ride of choice is a Polaris RMK 800 — once you’re at the lodge, the backcountry is waiting for you. “You can go snowmobiling right outside our doors,” she said.

Grizzly Lodge features 28 guest rooms, as well as a hot tub, sauna, full service bar Wi-Fi and satellite television. The lodge also has two massage therapists on staff to help knead away the kinks after a day of sledding on the bright, white slopes. Elkhova points out the kitchen is run by two Red Seal certified chefs, who are known for putting together extraordinary meals. “Usually, the guys are pretty happy

when they get here, food-wise,” she said. Elkhova said the lodge is a place for backcountry sledders of all skill levels. Visitors can find nice, mellow riding areas, as well as something more challenging. Visitors come from far and wide and Grizzly Lodge offers a variety of tickets and packages, including stay and ride packages that include everything you need for a snowmobile vacation. The lodge is also known for hosting rid-

ing clinics from noted backcountry snowmobiler Chris Burandt, who will be there for clinics from Dec. 14 to Dec. 18 this year and from April 11 to April 15 in 2020. Grizzly Lodge is locally owned and operated. Owners Adam and Rachel trainer have their own spot on the property and are there throughout the season with their two children. The lodge is open from Dec. 6, 2019, to April 20, 2020.

FALL & WINTER 2019

Stay safe driving in inclement weather Impaired visibility can be a safety hazard while driving. Everything from sun glare to hail can affect a driver’s ability to see the road and navigate it effectively. Before drivers get behind the wheel, they should make note of their local forecast and make a plan for what to do if rain, snow or other conditions make it challenging to drive. The International Association of Traffic and Safety Sciences indicates that, based on an examination of crash test data conducted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the “likelihood of a crash increases during periods of low visibility, despite the tendency for less traffic and for lower speeds to prevail during these times.” Drivers can take several steps to improve their visibility when driving in poor weather conditions. • Inspect and change windshield wiper blades. Wipers are instrumental in clearing precipitation away from the windshield. If they’re not functioning properly, wipers cannot do their jobs. Drivers should replace their wipers at the first indication that they are no longer effective. In some conditions, wipers can freeze or stick. Drivers should then pull over and clean the wipers manually.

• Clear obstructions. Always make sure the windshield is clear before driving. This can include removing ice and snow in the

winter and cleaning off mud or bug splatter in the spring and summer. Use the front and rear defrost if condensation fogs up

windshields and windows. • Slow down. Foul weather can reduce drivers’ ability to see far into the distance. Drivers should always drive slower in inclement weather in order to improve reaction time. • Top off fluids. Always keep the windshield washer reservoir full and keep extra fluid in the trunk. In addition, look for a fluid that does not freeze in very cold temperatures. • Learn how to drive in fog. Each year, more than 38,700 vehicle crashes occur in fog. Drivers should slow down, stay focused and use regular headlights and not high beams when driving in fog. • Go out only if necessary. In snowy or icy conditions, drive only if it’s absolutely necessary, as snow and ice can impair visibility and make roads slick. • Avoid driving at dusk and dawn. The human eye can have trouble adjusting to rapidly changing light and darkness conditions, which are common at dusk and dawn. If possible, drivers should make trips during the heart of the day, especially if poor lighting conditions typically make it difficult for them to drive. Drivers can take steps to improve visibility when inclement weather makes roadways hard to navigate.

FALL & WINTER 2019

Cross-country skiers love the trails at Kamloops’ Stake Lake TODD SULLIVAN STAFF REPORTER todd@kamloopsthisweek.com

Vesta Giles believes everyone should try cross-country skiing — and not because she’s president of the Overlander Ski Club. “It’s one of the most beginner-friendly sports around,” she said. “It’s a perfect way to get out and explore the winter woods in a safe way.” The club maintains over 60 kilometres of ski trails that are groomed every year, including five kilometres of dog trails and about eight kilometres of lit trails, featuring LED lights acquired via a grant from the Thompson-Nicola Regional District. “Lighting quality is just phenomenal,” Giles said. The trails are located at Stake Lake, about a 30-minute drive south of Kamloops along the Coquihalla Highway, and there

are routes for all experience levels. “We have really flat, gently rolling, green trails around the lake so that people aren’t going to be way out in the bush,” Giles said. “They can always get back to our heated day lodge.” The day lodge is located near the parking lot at Stake Lake and features staff who keep the fire roaring throughout the day. The club’s trails feature a unique experience for younger skiers — the Stuffy Ranger Program. Special trails for young skiers or snowshoers feature a number of stuffed toys along the route for the kids to spot. Children who find them all will be rewarded with a Stuffy Ranger Badge. Club members can get access to both cross-country skiing and snowshoeing throughout the year, but the club also offers day rates and punch cards. For those without their own gear, rentals are available

FALL & WINTER 2019

Pinantan ‘a little piece of paradise’ close by TODD SULLIVAN STAFF REPORTER todd@kamloopsthisweek.com

If you’re looking to get away from the chaos of everyday life, Pinantan Lake Resort might be a destination to keep in mind. Brad and Holly Watson are the resident owner/operators of the resort and they invite people to come out and experience their little piece of nature during the snowy months.

“It’s a little piece of paradise, a little gem up here, 20 minutes from Kamloops, on a lovely freshwater lake,” said Holly. There are a number of activities available at the resort, including ice fishing, crosscountry skiing, snowshoeing, sledding, snowmobiling and sometimes even skating. “Last year, we had a big ice skating path all around the lake,” Holly said. “One of the people who lived on the lake plowed the whole thing, it was pretty neat.”

She noted there is a variety of wildlife that can be spotted at the resort, including eagles, osprey, herons, otters and raccoons “We had deer on the property this morning,” she said on a recent fall day. The resort normally closes as the seasons transition from fall into winter, but opens again by Christmas, when the area truly becomes a winter wonderland. Four cabins are available for rent during the winter season.

Though there is no restaurant at the resort, the cabins do feature full kitchens, which Holly believes adds to the sense of being away from it all. That feeling of isolation may be what the resort does best. “In today’s world, everybody is so busy and people relax when they come here,” she said. “Sit back and let the world go by.” All information about the resort can be found online at pinantanlake.bc.ca.
