CP HOLIDAY
TRAIN helps feed the hungry
6 - Christmas in Kamloops 2019 | Part 2
I
f there’s one time of year that’s particularly tough for those who struggle to feed their families and themselves, it’s got to be the holidays. As everyone around you talks of gathering kin around massive roasted turkeys or hams, those who have trouble putting food on the table are especially in need of assistance. The CP Holiday Train is an annual fundraiser that travels across the country raising money to help exactly those people. It’s being raising money for food banks since 1999 and has raised more than $15.8 million and collected 4.5 million pounds of food since then. It starts its journey in Montreal on Nov. 25 and will travel across Canada to Vancouver, where it will stop on Dec. 17. It will stop at a number of communities along the way, including Kamloops on Dec. 15 at 4:30 p.m. on the north side of Sandman Centre Parking Lot on Lorne Street. The real reason to come and see the train during its stop in your city is to catch the musical performances that take place during the train’s stop. 2019 promises to be an exciting year for performances, with Alan Doyle and Beautiful Band playing from Montreal to Calgary, with Terri Clark and Dallas Smith coming about during the final leg from Calgary to Vancouver. Clark is a three-time Juno Award winner and holds the honor of being the only Canadian female member of the legendary Grand Ole Opry.

WILDLIGHTS M any families have a tradition at Christmastime to take an evening, pile into the family car and go for a trip through their neighbourhood checking out the many colourful light displays around them. Some might even travel further, to other neighbourhoods, areas where they’ve heard that the light displays are particularly exciting. If that’s your thing, make time
8 - Christmas in Kamloops 2019 | Part 2
in during your journey for a visit to the B.C. Wildlife Park for their annual Wildlights event. Maybe even make it a trip of its own. Wildlights runs from Dec. 13 to Jan. 5 at the park just east of the city, excluding Christmas Day. Thousands of bright and colourful lights make up holiday displays. Though be sure to visit after the sun goes down — the displays aren’t lit up during the daylight hours.
Be sure to check out favourite stops like the Home Hardware Family Farm and Santa Claus, or visit the new Tunnel of Lights. If you have a sweet tooth, come by on Dec. 14 and 15 for the cookie baking contest Don’t forget to visit the Wildlife Express miniature train to take a train-powered tour of the park and get up close with some of the featured lighting exhibits.

THE SNOW QUEEN PANTO will give you chills
A
n annual holiday pantomime has become a Kamloops tradition and 2019 is set to continue that with The Snow Queen: A Totally Frozen Panto produced by The Laughing Stock Theatre Society. The play, written by Vance Schneider, is an adaptation of The Snow Queen, which was the basis for Disney’s Frozen. The play will tell the story of an unlikely band of heroes and heroines — plus the Dame and dicey reindeer
Ragman
— who join forces to stop the evil Snow Queen from her attempts to forever cast the world into doom and gloom. While similar to traditional theatre, British Pantos involve a large degree of audience involvement, which can make the experience particularly fun for younger audience members. For example, loud cheering of the hero and booing of the villain is not only welcome, but encouraged. At other times, loudly disagreeing with the person on stage is part of
the show. For example, if the dame were to say, “I’m the most beautiful woman in the village,” the audience could counter with a loud, “Oh no you’re not!” The Snow Queen: A Totally Frozen Panto is the 9th annual traditional British Panto produced in Kamloops by The Laughing Stock Theatre Society. It runs from Dec. 24 to Dec. 30 at the Sagebrush Theatre. Tickets are available online at thelaughingstock.ca

Raising money for
LOCAL GROUPS
A
s the weather turns colder and we get closer to white flakes drifting down from the sky, we also begin to enter the season of giving. One of the signs that we’ve entered that season is the start of KTW’s fundraising drive for the Christmas Cheer Fund — a start that this story is announcing. This is the sixth year that KTW has been behind the Christmas Cheer Fund, having picked it up from the Kamloops Daily News and Gregg Drinnan in 2014. The money raised from the Christmas Cheer Fund supports five local charities each year, though things are a little different in 2019. The four charities being supported this year are the Kamloops Brain Injury Association, Out of the Cold, The Mustard Seed, and the Y Women’s Emergency Shelter. Though new charities are selected every two years, the Y Women’s Emergency Shelter has a permanent place on the list at the request of Drinnan, who originally created the fundraiser.
Some organizations are able to use the funds for larger projects, like The Mustard Seed which upgraded their kitchen last year, allowing them to maintain their meal programs at an optimum level. And for other organizations, it allows them to keep the lights on without the constant need to scramble for funds. “They have to spend as much time focusing on getting and applying for funds as they do doing the work for which they need the money,” Shoults said.
Donations can be made directly at the Kamloops This Week office at 1365B Dalhousie Drive or online at www.kamloopsthisweek.com/cheer Christmas in Kamloops 2019 | Part 2 -

CHRISTMAS
EVENTS B
y now, your holiday shopping is probably done — but don’t panic if it’s not as you are not alone and there is still plenty of time. Even if all presents are accounted for, there are still some fantastic events that will lure you from the comfort of your festive home. In fact, these last few weeks before Christmas is when some of the coolest stuff happens. On Dec. 13, you can get into the groove with the Christmas Swing Social Dance hosted by the Lindy in the Loops Swing Dance Society. It’s at the Desert Gardens Community Centre, downtown at 540 Seymour St., from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. and a great resource for those new to dancing or those who want to brush up on their moves. Sun Peaks Resort gets into the Christmas spirit with the Holiday Kick-Off Weekend. The event will run from Dec. 14 at 11 a.m. through Dec. 15 at 4 p.m. and will feature lights and music, an artisan market, snacks and hot chocolate, gingerbread houses and, of course, an opportunity for a picture with Santa. If photos aren’t your thing, perhaps break some

bread with the jolly old elf and attend Breakfast with Santa, hosted by Uptown Chefs Catering & Events and Romeo’s Kitchen & Spirits. It takes place on Sunday, Dec. 22, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Coast Kamloops Hotel and Conference Centre, 1250 Rogers Way in Aberdeen. Tickets are $20 per person plus applicable taxes and the event is a fundraiser for the Royal Inland Hospital’s neonatal intensive-care unit. Along with breakfast (and, obviously, Santa), there will be gifts for the children, multiple activities and face-painting. Tickets can be found online at eventbrite.ca. You can head back to Sun Peaks Resort on Dec. 22, Dec. 23 and Dec. 24 to enjoy a number of activities with Santa. Events include sledding with Santa, skiing with Saint Nick, a reading of The Night Before Christmas with Santa and breakfast with the man himself. For more information, contact Sun Peaks Resort by phone at 250-578-5474 or by email at events@sunpeaksresort.com Keep your eyes out for more great events as we head toward the big day as there are sure to be many popping up around Kamloops.

Frosty The Snowman
by Walter “Jack” Rollins and Steve Nelson
Frosty the Snowman Was a jolly, happy soul With a corncob pipe and a button nose And two eyes made out of coal Frosty the Snowman is a fairytale they say He was made of snow But the children know How he came to life one day There must have been some magic In that old silk hat they found For when they placed it on his head He began to dance around Oh, Frosty the Snowman Was alive as he could be And the children say He could laugh and play just the same as you and me Frosty the Snowman Knew the sun was hot that day
So he said let's run And we'll have some fun now before I melt away So down to the village With a broomstick in his hand Running here and there all around the square Saying catch me if you can He led them down the streets of town Right to the traffic cop And he only paused a moment when He heard him holler, "Stop!" For Frosty the Snowman had to hurry on his way But he waved goodbye Saying don't you cry I'll be back again some day Thumpety thump thump, thumpety thump thump Look at Frosty go Thumpety thump thump, thumpety thump thump Over the hills of snow

Silver bells, silver bells It’s Christmas time in the city Ring-a-ling, hear them sing Soon it will be Christmas day Strings of street lights Even stop lights Blink a bright red and green As the shoppers rush home with their treasures
Hear the snow crunch See the kids bunch This is Santa’s big scene And above all this bustle You’ll hear Silver bells, silver bells It’s Christmas time in the city Ring-a-ling, hear them sing Soon it will be Christmas day

Do You Hear What I Hear? by Edward Pola and George Wyle
Said the night wind to the little lamb, “Do you see what I see? Way up in the sky, little lamb, Do you see what I see? A star, a star, dancing in the night With a tail as big as a kite, With a tail as big as a kite.” Said the little lamb to the shepherd boy, “Do you hear what I hear? Ringing through the sky, shepherd boy,
Do you hear what I hear? A song, a song high above the trees With a voice as big as the the sea, With a voice as big as the the sea.” Said the shepherd boy to the mighty king, “Do you know what I know? In your palace warm, mighty king, Do you know what I know? A Child, a Child shivers in the cold—
Let us bring him silver and gold, Let us bring him silver and gold.” Said the king to the people everywhere, “Listen to what I say! Pray for peace, people, everywhere, Listen to what I say! The Child, the Child sleeping in the night He will bring us goodness and light, He will bring us goodness and light.”
