Creating a food experience that is uniquely yours Krista Stoesz, TRU Conference Centre

I

n the world of Pinterest, blogs, wedding websites, Facebook pages, podcasts and influencers, it is considerably easy to source beautiful invites, décor, venues, dresses and flowers, most of which are perfectly in line with the wedding trends of the year. They are beautiful, gorgeous and easy to add to your wedding. How do you add a piece of your own style to preconceived and trending wedding elements? To make your wedding truly unforgettable and make sure it stands out from the rest, it’s important to find one or two elements that are unique to your style, tastes and personalities. Depending on your venue and/or caterer, customizing your food experience may be the opportunity you are looking for to add your own personalize piece. When the time comes to start thinking about the food you will serve at your wedding, many venues have set buffet packages and standard bar menus, but it’s OK to ask for all the options. In fact, I recommend it. Here are some areas where you can think outside the box: Cocktail hour: Consider offering speciality “His and Hers” cocktails at the bar. These can be simply your favourite drinks or add a cute spin to the names like the Blushing Bride and the Grinning Groom. Take this to the next level by hosting these drinks for your guests or offering them at a reduced price if you can fit it in your budget. Dinner: Are you and your partner both vegan? Perhaps you are pasta aficionados or the king and queen of Taco

6

Tuesdays? Why not share these loves with your closest family and friends. Long gone are the days of a traditional meat and potato buffet dinner. After all, your perfect day includes your perfect meal. We have recently had great success building and executing fully custom buffets for wedding events, with extremely positive responses from the guests in attendance. Don’t be shy — make your dinner an ode to your style and preferences. Desserts: Desserts are another great opportunity to add in a personal touch. Who says that you have to stick with the traditional wedding cake? Perhaps you do a small cake for cutting and then work with your caterer or baker to offer a variety of different dessert options that are personal favourites or bring back memories of your first date at the fair. Think mini-donuts, popcorn and cotton candy. Late-night snack: This is an area that should not be overlooked. Be sure to curb those late-night cravings and keep your guests going by providing a fun build-your-own late-night snack station. Who doesn’t love a classic poutine, meatball slider or street-style taco? Creating a wedding with personal touches should not be limited to pretty invites and décor. Around-the-world food is known for bringing people together in celebration and creating a bond and shared identity among a group of people. Start your marriage off right by bringing your friends and families together to share a food experience that is truly unforgettable and uniquely yours.

GIVE YOUR WEDDING BOARD GREAT INSPIRATION Jody Peddle, TRU Conference Centre

A

n inspiration board is a valuable tool and one of the best ways to capture your vision and narrow your focus. I often create online inspiration boards to help outline my vision, hammer out colour schemes, identify good pairings, experiment with various looks and narrow my focus before committing to and finalizing my design direction, presenting a concept to a client or spending a dime. For those who may be unfamiliar with the term “inspiration board,” it is your aesthetic guide, a collage that communicates a creative vision. It began as a 3D concept — literally a bulletin board with fabric and colour

swatches, drawings, patterns and textures that are added and taken away until the balance and look feels right. You can certainly still work this way, of course, by using a corkboard that you can add to and take away from easily. Today, however, digital boards are the norm. The advantage of a digital board is its portability and shareability. You can easily access it on your iPad or phone for reference, or e-mail it to your vendors and suppliers. It’s a very effective way to communicate your concept to make sure everyone is on the same page about each of the different design details pertaining to your wedding. An inspiration board helps narrow your focus and capture a cohesive vision.

It can help you identify common threads and visualize how various elements will look together, providing an at-a-glance snapshot of your collective vision. It’s the perfect place to test out what does and doesn’t work together and acts as an anchor for your vision going forward. If something isn’t jiving, this type of tool will reveal it right away (and, thankfully, it’s pretty easy and inexpensive to swap out at this stage). Don’t let this process, or the fact you are not a trained designer, scare you away from creating an inspiration board. They really are fun, easy to make and a key tool in creating a welldesigned wedding. An inspiration board is not meant to make you feel like your wedding should look perfect or be an exact replica of the creations on the board. It’s simply a tool that can help bring your vision to life and clearly communicate your expectations. When you think of an inspiration board, the first thing that likely comes to mind is pictures. I suggest you begin by thinking of words to describe how you would like your wedding day to feel

2020 Kamloops Bridal Fair

before you get to the picture-stage. Once you have a vision of what your wedding looks and feels like in your mind, it will be easier to choose photos for your inspiration board. This will help you decipher between pictures you’re drawn to because they’re pretty or trendy and pictures you’re drawn to because they speak to the kind of celebration and atmosphere you’re planning. As you begin to envision the way your wedding looks and feels, you’ve already started to mentally fill in the blanks of your wedding’s colours and textures. Whether you’re using Pinterest or magazines or have found inspiration from your everyday life, start looking through your inspiration sources to see which colours you most associate with your guide words. For instance, if your guide words look something like Warm, Adventurous, Rustic, Fall, Outdoor Wedding, what colours come to mind for your individual words and for the words as a set? What textures make sense in the context of these words? What kinds of

foliage, materials and fabrics help tie the look of your day and the feel of your day together? As you answer each question, collect images for your inspiration board that depict those colours and textures. The images don’t necessarily need to be from wedding websites, apps or magazines. You can find inspiration in fashion, art, interior design (including your own home), nature and so much more. Looking for inspiration outside of weddings can help you craft a day that is both personal and unique. Something as unlikely as a pretty perfume package, gift wrap or your favourite patterned scarf can spark an idea. Fabrics, paint colour chips, stationery and trinkets are all great starting points, too. After compiling all of the images for your inspiration board, you’ll want to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. Do the images you’ve collected represent the way you want your wedding to look and feel? Is there a common thread throughout or do the images appear to be disjointed? Determining what the images have in

common will help you decide which photos will work best in your final inspiration board. To make sure it’s well curated, challenge yourself to take things off of it. That’s right — start eliminating ideas and images. Look for reoccurring elements. You don’t need to keep 25 images of monochromatic arrangements or 30 images of barnwood. Just keep your favourite(s). Once you start taking photos off, you can see what a difference it makes to pare images down. Consistent patterns will start to reveal themselves, like venue decor, stand-out colours and flower choices. You have successfully gathered and saved inspiration to bring your wedding vision to life and convey the overall look and feeling you want to achieve for your special day. Did you just decide on your wedding theme and colour palette? You’re darn right you did. It’s that easy. Congratulations. It’s such an exciting time as you set out on the journey to plan your wedding.

GET THE GROOM EXCITED ABOUT WEDDING PLANNING O Carmen Ruiz

10

ver the years, grooms have been given a bad reputation — that they have no desire to help with wedding planning. Sometimes that’s the case, but for the most part, they genuinely want to help. First off, don’t get upset if he keeps saying, “whatever you want” to every question you ask him. Yes, it is nice to have his input, but if your groom is more the drink-beer-and-watchthe-game type, it’s to be expected that will be his response if you ask him about colour swatches or floral arrangements. Instead, give your groom the opportunity to let him decide what he wants to help you with. Be upfront and ask him if there is any part of the wedding he wants to plan. If he still says, “whatever you want,” tell him that you’re feeling overwhelmed and need his help. Remember, he loves you and doesn’t want to see you stress out. If you’ve given him a task, but you are worried his tastes might clash with your theme or colours, guide him by giving him a few options on what you think will work with your colour or theme. Once he has chosen which option he likes best out of the choices you’ve presented to him, kindly remind him to have said task done by a certain date. Another item off the to-do list he will want to be a part of is picking out his attire. Ladies, we all want our guys to look impeccable for the big day, but it’s OK to let your groom pick out what he wants to wear. It is, after all, his big day, too, and just as you chose your wedding dress, let him choose his attire. Most men take pride in their looks and have a good eye for men’s fashion. If you’re worried he will pick something completely out of the box, remind him of what your colours are and tell him to pick a suit he thinks will complement them. If he’s completely intimidated and asks for your help, then help him. If all else fails, have a few suit options picked out for him and ask which one he likes best. They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach and, if that rings true, bring him along to all food tastings. Letting him help you choose the menu is a sure-fire way to get him excited about wedding planning. Ask your groom to be a part of food-related decisions and consider letting him pick out the wedding cake flavour or having a groom’s cake. Whether you’re having a DJ or a live band, have him pick out songs he wants played at the wedding. Ask him what song he’ll want to hear when he sees you walk down the aisle and, if you don’t already have a song, have him help you choose which tune will accompany the first dance. 2020 Kamloops Bridal Fair

2020 Kamloops Bridal Fair

You have attended the Kamloops Bridal Fair

NOW WHAT?

Allen Douglas/KTW file

Jenn Pallett, TRU Conference Centre

Y

ou took the first important step in your planning by attending this year’s Kamloops Bridal Fair. Now what? Sorting through all of the information you received can be a daunting task, so we have come up with some suggestions on how to de-clutter and organize the information to help you find what you need:

STEP 1: PILES

This step is like being a kid on Halloween. Find a large empty space and dump your bridal bag out to get a look at all the loot. Start sorting all the contents of your pile into smaller, more manageable piles. Determine the best sorting style for you. Some examples are by industry, services, type of vendor: or you can sort by what you want and need or by what you know doesn’t apply.

STEP 2: TAKE A BREAK

Walk away from your piles. Chances are you have already started reading while you were sorting, so now you need to take a break to clear your mind. This step can be repeated as necessary as it is an important step in this process.

STEP 3: READ AND REVIEW

This step can take anywhere from a day to a week or more. Start reading the information in your piles so you can compare and review services, pricing and packaging to find your best fit. Make sure you have a notepad and pen, or a device where you can make notes. Depending on the type of researcher and planner you are, you may need to take breaks to create lists, spreadsheets or just to step away to process.

Published by Kamloops This Week

STEP 4: DEEP RESEARCH

By this step, you have likely narrowed down your choices based on all the information you collected. Now you can start getting deeper into what the exhibitors of your choosing can truly do for your wedding. Visit the exhibitor websites to better learn about the company. This is also a great time to check out pricing and start comparing your exhibitor choices with your budget. A note of additional advice for this step is to ensure you are comparing apples to apples. One of the biggest mistakes during this step is assuming that something is the same. Make a list of what each package or service includes. This will help you see if the packages or services are actually similar.

STEP 5: BUDGET

One more step before contacting the exhibitors to confirm bookings and paying deposits. Double check to ensure the exhibitors, packages and products you have chosen fit within your budget. Consider packages or products that will be less than your expected budgeted amount. You may have wiggle room to make some of your higher budget items a reality.

STEP 6: CONTACT

After all your research, you are prepared to ask the questions you need to ask, as well as confirm and pay deposits. Set up meetings with your exhibitors to confirm the details on which you have decided. All the best with your planning. Your wedding day will be amazing.

WEDDING REGISTRIES AS UNIQUE AS THE COUPLE

A

crucial part of planning a wedding is also planning for and creating a wedding registry. The bridal registry is extremely important if you want to avoid duplicate gifts. Starting a registry early lets guests have enough time to choose what items they would like to give you. You may not have a comprehensive wedding registry ready early on, but make it large enough for guests to have enough options to browse and choose. You also need to plan what kind of registry you want and what kinds of items and products need to be a part of it. The ideal wedding registry for a young couple is one that lists household items. Such a registry is perfect for a couple starting a new life together. Let’s take a look at some of the wedding gifts that can be a part of the ideal wedding registry. A lot of young couples benefit from a kitchenware wedding registry. Having a well-equipped kitchen means creating and sharing meals together at home, entertaining and cooking whenever you want. Kitchenware items can range from regular silverware and glassware to appliances like mixers, food processors, toasters and coffee machines. Equally as useful for a couple as a kitchenware registry are home-furnishing items and a home-linen registry that includes products like tablecloths, bedding and bath towels. You can include items like duvet sets, bed sheets, pillows, bed skirts and blankets. It may also be appropriate to include home furnishings and home linen products like tablecloths, towels, cloth napkins, curtains, rugs and more.

Doctor Love is a 20 year locally-owned and operated business, proud to be part of the bridal fair.

FOLLOW THESE 10 GREAT TIPS FOR A WEDDING DAY TO REMEMBER TRU Conference Centre

1. ALWAYS CONSIDER THE WEATHER:

Nobody wants rain on their wedding day, nor do your guests want to sit and watch your wedding while the sun is beating down in 40 C heat. If you are having an outdoor wedding, consider adding a tent rental to your budget, which will cover you in the event of rain or too much sunshine. Another thing to consider when getting married outside is asking your makeup artist to use makeup with SPF to avoid any unwanted over-exposure during the course of the day.

2. THINK ABOUT WHO WILL NEED TO BE FED:

Most photographers, DJs or other vendors who will be there during the mealtime have an expectation of being fed. If you are unsure if they are expecting it, just ask. They don’t need a special place setting; vendors, like most DJs, will sit and eat at their station. The other people you should be feeding include those in your bridal party. Spending the morning primping and getting ready means most won’t have time for a bite to eat.

3. ENSURE DAY-OF CONTACT IS NOT PART OF THE WEDDING PARTY. If the bakery is going to be late delivering your cake and they are frantically trying to call your sister to let you know, chances are she doesn’t have her phone stuffed into her bridesmaid dress. To lessen the stress on the day of, ask a reliable friend or family member who isn’t a part of the wedding party. Ideally, the point of contact will be part of the planning process and will know what’s happening, but will still be available during the day. This means they probably won’t be off taking photos with everyone and will ensure they have their phone on them for a hiccup-free day.

4. HAVE A WEDDING DAY KIT:

Anything can happen and, to lessen the disaster of an ill-fitting garter or a drink spilled on a dress, always be prepared for the unexpected. These are some things that you should put in your wedding day kit: sunscreen, bobby pins, pens and paper, travel sewing kit, lip chap, hairbrush safety pins, hairspray, bottled water, mouthwash, superglue, toothbrush and toothpaste, Tide-To-Go, scissors, deodorant, Kleenex, hand sanitizer, tampons, Band-Aids, ibuprofen, lighter, tape.

5. HAVE A VENDOR LIST:

your budget, the amount of guests and time you have for wedding planning Write down the list of names and numbers of important people. Make sure before running off to the thrift store to find teacups and matching saucers. this list is in your wedding day kit for reference and that your point of contact Chances are they will only have four and you will spend your whole day and also has this list. Here are a few people who need to be on that list: florist, venue a tank of gas running to every second hand store in town to find more. There contact, DJ, bakery caterer, decorator, hair stylist, photographer/videographer, are always great ideas and Pinterest is a great place to spark some creativity, but makeup artist, officiant/commissioner, you don’t want your special day straight limo driver/transportation contact. from your wedding board. Be original 6. RANK AND ALIGN YOUR PRIORITIES and consider your own style while you’re planning your big day. When planning WITH YOUR BUDGET: Consider the smaller details and their level DIYs for you wedding, always do it in advance. Last-minute searching and of importance to your day, then budget accordingly. If you do not think having a crafting is stressful and you won’t have lavish wedding cake is a big priority for you, as much time as you think in the weeks leading up to the wedding. Things may slash the amount you spend on it. Why spend a lot of money on something that not turn out the way you hoped they would, so be prepared to have a backup. isn’t as important to you? For example, if having a top-rate photographer is something that is really important to you, 8. ALWAYS SEND THANK YOU CARDS: Regardless of whether they gave you a gift, then allocate more of your budget for it. always send a thank you card. trick is to either tape the card to the gift they gave you, take a photo of the gift and who it is from or even film unwrapping all the gifts. It is best to have a helper write in the card what they gave you.

9. HAVE A REHEARSAL:

Even if walking down the aisle seems like a no-brainer, it is always recommended to have a rehearsal. Be sure to invite your photographer, especially if the ceremony is outside, so they know what to expect for your wedding party and the weather at that time. Ensure everyone knows where they are supposed to be walking to and from and take the sunlight into consideration, especially for photos. Ideally, schedule your rehearsal the day before at the same time as your wedding ceremony so you will have an idea of how the lighting will be at that time.

10. BOOK IN ADVANCE:

You can’t always plan when the proposal happens, but weddings need to be booked in advance for your venue, photographer, commissioner, etc. to all line up on the date you would like. Even if you are flexible on the date, all of the vendors you want may not be, so be sure to book as much in advance as you can.

2. YOU AND YOUR FIANCÉ WILL FIGHT OVER THE GUEST LIST. A LOT.

ADVICE FROM THE ALTAR

Carmen Ruiz, TRU Conference Centre

W

hen I got engaged, I was thrilled. My boyfriend of five years had finally popped the question and I was ready to celebrate our love with everyone. As the excitement of our engagement faded and I went into planning mode, I began realizing there was a lot I didn’t know about being engaged. Here’s a list of things I wish I would’ve been prepared for when I got engaged:

1. BE PREPARED TO TELL YOUR ENGAGEMENT STORY.

At first, you’ll give every little detail, from the exact words your partner said to the temperature of the room. But, after repeating the same story for the 20th time, you’ll begin wanting to shorten it — and that’s OK. You will come up with your own condensed version and have it memorized because people will ask how your partner popped the question months after it’s happened.

My fiancé and I were so naïve thinking we wouldn’t fight over something so petty because we were excited and in love. For the most part, this was the case. However, we fought over things, not people, that were important to the both of us that affected the guest list. I wanted to have an adult-only ceremony, whereas he was worried we would offend friends and family. I argued we were inviting too many people, which would make us go over budget, and he argued we could cut back on other things to keep us on budget. No matter what you and your fiancé fight about, the important thing to remember is you love each other and the fighting is disguised as passionate conversation over a topic you both care about.

3. VENDORS FILL UP QUICKLY.

Give yourselves some time to enjoy your engagement but, if you want get married the year following your engagement, you’ll want to get into planning mode right away. Be aware there are other couples also getting married and there are only 24 weekends in wedding season.

4. GET A MANICURE ASAP.

I’ve never been so self-conscious about my hands. You only notice how horrible your nails are and the roughness of your hands only after you begin showing off that gorgeous rock.

5. PEOPLE WILL ASK IF THEY ARE INVITED TO THE WEDDING.

We had a lot of people, including distant relatives, who were expecting to get an invitation, which made things really awkward. When this happens — and it will, trust me — be prepared to have a response that is honest and won’t offend. We simply told people that we were keeping our wedding small by inviting immediate family and very close friends only. We also smiled and nodded, a lot.

6. AT THE END OF THE DAY, ITS YOU AND YOUR FIANCÉ’S BIG DAY.

Unless your parents are footing the bill, you and your fiancé get the final say. Don’t want to invite your mom’s best friend’s cousin twice removed? Don’t invite them. Want to serve doughnuts instead of a traditional wedding cake? Go for it! It’s you and your partner’s day, so have fun with it.
