We already know Kamloops is a kind place – and with the COVID-19 crisis, there are more opportunities than ever to celebrate that. That’s what our new Kindloops program, presented by Valley First, a division of First West Credit Union, is all about. We’re going to celebrate all the acts of kindness Kamloopsians are doing for each other right now. All you have to do to participate is give the name of a local individual who’s done something kind for someone else in Kamloops. We’re going to publish those submissions in Kamloops This Week every week for the next 12 weeks, and pick one random submission each week. The person who performed that act of kindness and the person who nominated them will each get a $25 gift certificate to a local restaurant. Then, when the COVID-19 crisis lifts, we’re going to put all the entries together into a special commemorative edition, celebrating all the acts of kindness that have been nominated, and pick one random entry. The person who performed that act and the person who nominated them will each win a prize of $500 worth of gift certificates to local restaurants!

Celebrate kindness with us in Kamloops with Kindloops. HOW TO PARTICIPATE:

• Go to www.kindloops.com OR • Enter via social media - put your nomination in Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and just tag Kamloops This Week (@kamthisweek) and include the hashtag #kindloops in your post

SUMMER

2020

amping in provincial parks is open to B.C residents only this summer. The move aligns B.C. with other provinces. In May, the Alberta government said it would reopen provincial park campsites in June; however, they will be for Alberta residents only and existing reservations made by out-of-province campers will be cancelled. Saskatchewan also instituted a similar policy, opening provincial campgrounds to local residents only. Minister of Health Adrian Dix said the move was made to control overnight travel. B.C. Recreation Sites and Trails opened all recreation sites across the province on May 14 for day use. Camping was permitted as of June 1, with people able to book two months in advance. The federal government announced in mid-May that Parks Canada will take a phased approach to opening national parks and heritage sites. Use of some trails, day use areas and green spaces and recreational boating were permitted as of June 1, but the federal government said camping in national parks will not be allowed until at least June 21. For BC Parks, group sites will be closed until December. Go online to http://bcparks.ca/covid-19/ parks-affected/ to learn whether the campground you wish to visit is open and under which conditions.

Get email alerts for favourite campsites Outdoors enthusiasts now have a website they can use to find out whether their favourite campsite has an opening. The website — www.campalert.live/BC — allows people to enter the campsite they wish to

use and see what is available. The website operates on a colourcoded system: • green means the site is available; • red means the site is not available;

• grey means the site is first come, first served, with no reservation needed.) If the site is full, website visitors can sign up for an email alert and will receive a message when an opening emerges.

Kamloops region is a fishing, swimming paradise

F

or many, the adventure at the end of the road consists of a lake filled with fish. Whether you are taking your family car to a local watering hole or packing up your RV for a longer stay in the great outdoors, the Kamloops area offers a plethora of lakes for fishing, swimming and much more: Edith Lake: Located 17 kilometres south of Kamloops, Edith Lake is a small body of water offering a dozen campsites and access for boaters. The lake’s close proximity to Kamloops makes it a popular summer destination and facilities include a boat launch, tables and toilets. Isobel Lake: About 27 kilometres northwest of Kamloops, Isobel Lake is a popular yearround destination for outdoor enthusiasts. The area boasts canoeing and biking in the summer and cross-country skiing in winter. The lake is stocked with rainbow trout, making it popular

with anglers, as well. McQueen Lake: Not far from Isobel Lake, the McQueen Lake area is full of established hiking and cross-country skiing trails. McQueen Lake is popular with anglers, as well as with students, with the Kamloops-Thompson school district making use of facilities in the area for class excursions during the school year. Paul Lake: About 25 kilometres east of Kamloops, Paul Lake is a popular summer destination for people looking to enjoy the outdoors. Ninety campsites are open year-round and the lake is a favourite of many area anglers and boaters. The surrounding Paul Lake Provincial Park was established in 1961 and is comrpises 728 acres. Pinantan Lake: A few minutes east of Paul Lake, Pinantan Lake offers top-notch boating and fishing opportunities. Though there are no public campsites at Pinantan Lake, the area is home

to a large public picnic site. Little Pinantan Lake, at the northeast end of its larger sibling, is also a favourite for anglers looking for rainbow trout in the one-pound range. Sheridan Lake: About 150 kilometres northwest of Kamloops — not far from 100 Mile House — Sheridan Lake is located on the Fishing Highway stretching west to Little Fort. The lake is well-known for its crystalclear waters and its rainbow trout fishing. It is also a popular destination for hikers, cyclists and ATV drivers. North Barriere Lake: About 90 kilometres north of Kamloops, off Highway 5, North Barriere Lake provides the opportunity for many recreation activities. In the summer, it is popular with families looking to spend time on the beach and enjoying the water. The area is also popular with campers, home to 25 sites. Lac Le Jeune: Located about 40 kilometres south of Kamloops,

not far from the Coquihalla Highway, Lac Le Jeune is situated in a beautiful young forest. The area is popular among campers and anglers looking for a quick getaway. Busy in the summer months, Lac Le Jeune is also popular in the winter. Jacko Lake: About 25 kilometres south of Kamloops, Jacko Lake is a popular destination for anglers, producing rainbow trout up to four pounds. Jacko Lake does not boast any campsites, but it does feature a day-use area with a boat launch. Roche Lake: About 35 kilometres southeast of Kamloops, accessed via gravel road from Highway 5A at the north end of Trapp Lake, Roche Lake sits between Kamloops and Merritt off the Old Merritt Highway. It is a popular fishing spot — it was among the lakes used in the 1993 World Fly Fishing Championships — known for its rainbow trout in the two- to four-pound range. The resort at the lake has cabins that can be rented.

DISCOVER THE SECRET FALLS OF WELLS GRAY TERESA CLINE

SPECIAL TO KTW

W

ith 39 named and countless unnamed waterfalls trickling down the mountains in its boundaries, Wells Gray Park has earned its nickname — Canada’s Waterfalls Park. Triple Decker Falls is one of the named falls. It is lesserknown and less visited than some others, despite the fact it’s the first falls in view to as you drive up the main road into the park. There is no sign indicating the trailhead. Unless you know it’s there, you would easily pass it by. I heard about it during my hike to Trophy Mountain. I met a fellow hiker who gave me directions to the secret trailhead. On my next visit to Wells Gray, I was determined to see the falls. My two hiking buddies and I did just that. At the end of a long day of hiking, we stopped and

took the 500-metre trail down the hill to the falls. They are gorgeous, at 60 metres high. From there, we returned to the car; however, a trail continues on. The River Trail is a sevenkilometre one-way hike that takes you past volcanic and river formations. You see amazing bluffs, natural land bridges, waterfalls and river features. It ends at the end of Dutch Lake Road. It is recommended you park a vehicle on each end of the trail. HOW TO GET THERE: From Kamloops, drive north on Highway 5 to Clearwater. At the traffic circle, drive up Clearwater Valley Road, the main road into Wells Gray Park. Farther up the road, you will see a small pullout on the left with a sign that says, “Woodlot licence No. 301.” Parking is available and you will see the trailhead. Teresa Cline is a travel writer. SUMMER

2020

Tips for joining the burgeoning RV lifestyle Whether you’re buying your first RV, upgrading or downsizing, these three golden rules will help you find the best fit for your lifestyle and budget so you can get the most out of your investment and the season. • MAKE SURE YOU’RE EQUIPPED TO TOW YOUR NEW UNIT Before you can find your perfect RV, you need to tackle one major detail — how to get your RV from point A to point B. Unless it’s a motorized unit, how are you going to get your RV off the lot? What is the maximum towing capacity of your truck, minivan or SUV? What’s the size of the engine? These answers can all be found in the vehicle owner’s manual, but it’s also a good idea to visit a local RV dealership and asking staff to help you find the right fit for you. It’s always better to be safe. If you find yourself falling in love with the idea of a fifth wheel or large travel trailer, but don’t have a truck that can tow it, we can help with that. Ask us about our vacation-

certified trucks, which are next to new and have been gently driven only five months of the year by tourists, so you can get a nearly new truck without the sticker shock of “new.” • IDENTIFY YOUR LONGTERM CAMPING GOALS If you are new to RVing, you’re bound to be excited about all the great adventures you can have this season. However, considering that buying an RV is an important investment, it’s crucial to remember your current lifestyle will likely evolve over time. Here are two basic, but helpful questions to ask yourself: 1. How many people will usually be in your party? This could just mean your family, but may also include extended family or friends. If you want to bring along more people, consider floor plans that offer sufficient sleeping space. Also, keep in mind that more people means more belongings, so storage space and weight of your gear are other important factors.

2. What do you like to do at your campsite? Now that you know how many people you’re bringing, think of what you plan on doing once you’re at your destination. Toys, such as fishing poles, ATVs, bikes and kayaks, require

YOUR CHEVROLET, OUR PRICE.*

additional storage space. Identifying your interests will help determine the RV that best fits your lifestyle. These are just a few of the scenarios you should consider in your ongoing search for a recreational vehicle.

• THINK OF WHERE YOU WILL STORE YOUR RV As noted, once you take your RV off the lot, you will need to store it somewhere. Tent trailers collapse into small, compact spaces, but trailers (especially fifth wheels) and motorized RVs require larger storage space. If you have a large driveway with space for multiple cars or a large property, storage will be more readily available for you. If you live in an area where you rely on street parking, you’ll need to consider off-site storage on a flat surface. S torage facilities exist and are available at a cost, so remember to factor this into your overall budget. Aside from parking, keep in mind that some campgrounds actually have limits on the size of units that can park there. For example, if your favourite campsite has a 30-foot limit, you probably don’t want to buy a unit longer than that. As always, ask questions of the experts. There are no wrong or silly queries.

SUMMER

2020

Take care on — and when around — two wheels

W

arm weather and road trips often go handin-hand — and spring and summer are prime seasons for motorcycle riders to get out on the highway. Motorcycle riders are at an extreme disadvantage when sharing the road with cars and trucks. In the event of a collision, motorcycle riders can be seriously injured and are far less protected than those in a car or truck. Motorcycle riders also face greater hazards from debris on the road and other road conditions. Continuing to be safe, and educating oneself about motorcycle safety — whether you are a rider or someone sharing the road — can continue to help prevent accidents and injuries. • Wear protective gear: The right helmet can mean the difference between life and death. From shape to style to fit, riders can work with helmet companies and outfitters to find the right helmet for them. Long pants, eye protection, riding gloves, and a waterproof jacket also make for effective and protective gear. • Take a class: Novices would be

wise to enroll in classes to go over motorcycling basics and safety guidelines that can keep them alive and well on the road. Check with ICBC, driving schools and local motorcycle dealerships about classes that may be available. • Avoid blind spots: Motorcycles are difficult to see on the road. Try to stay out of vehicles’ blind spots as much as possible and maintain safe distances between your bike and others on the road. • Make yourself visible: Wear something bright or use reflective or nylon tape and mesh to make yourself more visible to fellow motorists. • Never ride tired or intoxicated: Fatigue and/or alcohol reduces reaction time and could find you making costly mistakes that put your life in danger. • Share the road responsibly: Drivers of cars and trucks need to be diligent in keeping their eyes and ears open for motorcycle riders, allowing them a wide berth.

Motorcyclists will be taking to the roads in increasing numbers, and safety should be their top priority. KTW FILE PHOTO

SUMMER

2020

A licence to skim summertime waters In B.C. and across Canada, you must have a boat licence in order to operate most water vessels. All boaters operating in B.C. waters are required to have a Pleasure Craft Operator Card. Powered watercraft includes boats fitted with any size motor — even an electric motor. Boaters operating a vessel without an operating card are subject to a $250 fine. The good news, however, is licensing in B.C. and throughout Canada is relatively easy. ASM Safe Boating, a national boating educator, encourages boaters in all provinces to take a Transport Canada-accredited course to obtain the Canadian boating license (officially known as a Pleasure Craft Operator Card). ASM Safe Boating, through its partnership with BoaterExam.com, offers Transport Canada-accredited courses and certification for the Canadian Pleasure Craft Operator Card. TAKE THE TEST The boating licence course requires three hours of study time. The boating licence course includes:

practice test. Find more online. When a storm hits while a vessel is underway, the operator should do which of the following: a) Take waves from the port or starboard side, never head-on. b) Ensure that all those onboard are wearing a personal flotation device. c) Keep all electrical equipment plugged in — even if lightning is present. d) Shift all passengers to the highest point onboard the boat.

Cruising the waters of the South Thompson River is a summer pastime in Kamloops. KTW FILE PHOTO

• approximately three hours of classroom learning designed for both the experienced and novice boater, ages eight years and older; • The Transport Canadaapproved exam at the end of the course; • A temporary Pleasure Craft Operator Card issued on-site; • A permanent Pleasure Craft Operator Card mailed

within three weeks. You only pay for your boating license exam once. If you don’t pass, you can try the exam again at no additional charge. Get certified through BoaterExam.com. SAMPLE QUESTIONS Think you know your stuff? Here are some sample questions from BoaterExam.com’s

What is the purpose of the H.E.L.P position? a) Allows the person to float better. b) Slows the loss of heat from the body’s core. c) Easier to find the victim. d) Prevents the PFD from coming off.

What is the purpose of having a safety lanyard onboard a personal watercraft (such as SeaDoo or a similar craft)? a) To keep the operator from falling overboard. b) To keep a throwable PFD from falling overboard. c) To stop the engine if the operator falls overboard. d) To stop the operator from losing his or her keys. Which of the following is the most suitable place to store a marine fire extinguisher? a) Along with the trailer. b) Under the operator of passenger seats. c) In a closed compartment. d) In an open area where easily accessible. Which would be considered the most hazardous condition onboard a vessel? a) Not having a tool kid onboard. b) Not having enough whistles. c) Not having enough life jackets. d) Operating at idle speed in a “no wake zone.”

LAURA DOAN PHOTO Above is Tsútswecw Park, meaning “many rivers” in Secwépemc. In 2018, its name was changed from Roderick Haig-Brown Park in a local example of BC Parks acknowledging and incorporating local Indigenous cultural heritage.

THE RICH HISTORY BENEATH OUR BC PARKS

ost of B.C.’s provincial parks reopened for overnight camping on June 1. If you’ve been lucky enough to secure a reservation in one of the province’s 340 campgrounds, perhaps take some time during your stay to consider the importance of these protected places and the depth of history contained in many of these locations. There is considerable overlap between the location of known archaeological sites and provincial parks. From an archaeological perspective, it is not at all surprising that archaeological sites abound within provincial parks. B.C. was a leader

in Western Canada in protecting land through the establishment of provincial parks. The first provincial park in B.C., Strathcona Provincial Park on Vancouver Island, was established in 1911. Over the ensuing decades, more and more areas across the province were designated as provincial parks and afforded protection. Fast forward to the present day and, according to BC Parks, more than 14 per cent of the province (amounting to 13.5-million hectares) is located within the BC Parks system. The parks system includes campsites, hiking trails, boat launches and day-use areas. For millennia before European settlers arrived in what is now called British Columbia, Indigenous

Archaeologists measure a house pit depression at Monck Park during a training program. PHOEBE MURPHY PHOTO

people were living throughout the various ecosystems in the province. Present-day coveted campsites near rivers and lakeshores were also optimal habitation locations in the past, with plenty of fishing, hunting and plant species available for procurement. Provincial parks are often situated near major water courses and within important environs, such as the Lac du Bois grasslands

near Kamloops. The location of provincial parks near lakes, rivers and creeks often corresponds with the presence of archaeological sites. In fact, shoreline surveys by foot and boat of the major water systems within the Southern Interior — commissioned by the Heritage Conservation Branch (now called the BC Archaeology Branch) in the 1970s — recorded hundreds of archae-

ological sites along the banks of lakes and rivers. The shoreline surveys were undertaken before many of the provincial parks in the Southern Interior were established and served to provide an inventory of the diversity and distribution of archaeological sites. The archaeological sites identified during these surveys included rock art, burials, surface scatters of stone and bone artifacts and round-, oval- and rectangular-shaped depressions in the ground representing the remains of house pits, storage pits and earth ovens. Some of the archaeological sites identified during the shoreline

surveys were eventually protected from development through the establishment of provincial parks. Provincial parks are an ideal way to preserve archaeological sites through the designation of green spaces and the ability to limit or avoid destruction of these sites compared to areas outside park boundaries. Not all provincial parks containing archaeological sites acknowledge the archaeological and cultural history of the area. A local example of a provincial park incorporating archaeological features is Monck Park on Nicola Lake near Merritt, where large house pits are left undisturbed in a green space and marked with informational signage. Additionally, along the Adams River east

of Kamloops, the 2018 name change from Roderick Haig-Brown Park to Tsútswecw Park, meaning “many rivers” in Secwépemc, is another local example of BC Parks acknowledging and incorporating local Indigenous cultural heritage. If you find yourself in a provincial park this summer, following the guidelines by the BC government to stay local in 2020, take time to consider the vast history of the province long before Europeans arrived. Many campsites contain a rich and varied history just beneath the surface. Phoebe Murphy is a Kamloops-based archaeologist. Interested in more? Go online to republic ofarchaeology.ca.
