GET TO KNOW KINDLOOPS

How Kindloops came to be TIM SHOULTS

e know that disasters and crises always give human beings the chance to show us at our best as well as our worst. Acts of courage, sacrifice and kindness spring up seemingly out of nowhere, and surprise us with their impact. We saw that in spades in Kamloops this spring, when the Rotary Food Drive set a new all-time record with 70,000 pounds of food donated and gathered. But that wasn’t one act of generosity that led to such an impressive result, was it? Rather, it was thousands of small gestures put together, from individuals putting a few cans or boxes of food in a bag to volunteers driving around to pick them up to more volunteers collecting and sorting them. None of those individual acts is particularly heroic, but put them all together and you’ve got something amazing. And it doesn’t take a food drive to make it happen – those small acts of kindness

have been happening all around us as we speak for months, from people buying pizza slices for health care workers to paying for a stranger’s groceries when they realize their wallet’s at home to simply calling a friend in self-isolation to check in. So we decided to try to pull them together and demonstrate just how much those little acts can mean. In April, we launched the Kindloops program, presented by Valley First, a division of First West Credit Union. We put out a call for Kamloopsians to tell us short stories about the acts of kindness they saw others doing for each other. We published a selection of the submissions we receive in Kamloops This Week every week over 12 weeks, and picked one random submission each week, with the person who performed that act of kindness and the person who nominated them each getting a gift certificate to the local restaurant of their choice. Now, we’ve put all the entries together into this special commemorative edition, celebrating all the acts of kindness that have come into us over that past 12 weeks. We’re so thankful to our title sponsor, Valley First, for making this project come to life, to New Gold, our premier sponsor, and

to all the other advertisers who have joined us to bring you this special edition. Sometimes we hear from readers that we don’t print enough good news. That’s an occupational hazard of publishing a community newspaper – to do our jobs properly, we need to tell bad news stories as well as good, though contrary to some people’s opinions, we’d rather write about good news. Consider this the antidote to that complaint. This is the biggest single section of nothing but uplifting good news about this community that we’ve ever published. Like most things in the world of newspapers, this isn’t new — I first saw a version of this done at a newspaper in Langley back in 2007, called Pay It Forward based on the famous book and movie of the same name. We were looking at creating Pay It Forward Kamloops earier this year, but a meeting I was invited to back in early March changed our direction. A group of community-minded individuals, led by Coun. Arjun Singh and former TRU counselor David Lidster, were discussing how to have better civil discourse in Kamloops, particularly online, where you might have noticed things can get a little impolite at times.

We decided that the core of civility was basic kindness – and that led us to this initiative. We know that Kamloopsians are kind at heart, especially in times of crisis; our larger goal, as we continue through and start to emerge from the current crisis, will be to make that kindness last. As our strange new world takes shape and we suffer as individuals, as families and as a community from the strains of continuing concerns over health, economic security and the weight of uncertainty that continues to hang over us all, we see some signs of stress on kindness and civility in our community. This section is a reminder that despite all those challenges and the toll they take on us, being kind, even in the face of unkind behaviour, is the best kind of infectious behaviour. In the words of our provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry, who is as close to a modern-day icon as we have: “Be kind. Be calm. Be safe.” Tim Shoults is operations manager at Kamloops This Week. He can be reached by phone at 250-374-7467 or email at tshoults@aberdeenpublishing.com.

Good neighbours, ear savers and Costco My sister Val Shannik is a teacher at Brock Middle School. She is spear heading a clothing drive to help support Brock families that were struggling before Covid-19 no less now with many of them losing their jobs do to this pandemic. She personally has been driving around all over the city collecting donations from everyone willing to donate. Not only is she organizing, collecting and cleaning all the donation to get them ready for the families that desperately need them but she has been busy cooking special goodies to add to the lunch program and starfish program to help feed struggling Brock students. She goes out of her way to make sure her students are fed even spending 100s of dollars of her own money on food items to make sure her students don’t go to bed hungry. She personally delivers the food packages to families that can’t make it to the school to pick them up each day/ week to support her students during this difficult time when their parents can’t. Ashley Shannik Ann Weller has organized our neighbourhood so that we can help each other while we are staying at home during the current pandemic, and offers to shop for us whenever she’s out. She even notified us to join a drive-by salute for a neighbourhood boy who turned 12 years old, putting notices and balloons in our mailboxes. Ann has made face masks, dropped off Easter goodies, and offered to help any of us in need. She’s truly an asset to our street and to our city. Jill Baker My daughter Susie Schermerhorn and her family cooked us a full Easter dinner, chicken, stuffing, potatoes, cranberry sauce and rolls, and delivered it hot to our door in a beautiful basket with a perfect tulip because we couldn’t eat together during this quarantine. It was not only delicious but their loving gesture meant the world to us. Hillary Parsons Thanks to the generous donation of copier transparency films by Karl Meyer, Kamloops Makerspace made 720 face shields that are being delivered to front line workers out in the community. NL Turcott

We Appreciate our Kind Kamloops Customers

When we returned from Arizona in late March, we went into self-quarantine for two weeks. Our fridge and freezer had been emptied and turned off and we had very little on the pantry shelves. Our friend, Betsy Dabner, offered to do some grocery shopping for us, which she did. We had enough basic groceries for meals through the two weeks. Also, Betsy has been a part of the Sew the Curve group which is sewing face masks for places such as seniors’ care homes, etc. She has also given them to family members and friends. So, I would like to recognise her kindness during this difficult time. Carol Hansen

My 69-year-old mother works full time as a care aid at Ponderosa Lodge. She has crocheted (more then she could count) ear savers for the staff at work. She would never toot her own horn. Tracey Bogie Nathan and Corey Wallace are making ear savers for no charge. They have distributed more than 400 to healthcare workers and currently making them for the BCNU (an order of 4000). Shelley Ford I was feeling pretty fluish and spending time alone at my house in Brock. My brother messaged me to say he was bringing me some home made soup from Chase. Sure enough, the drop took place at the back porch and I fed myself 5 meals of warm chicken soup and I’m sure it saved me. I want to thank my brother, Laurie Friesen, for the wonderful gesture! ally...we each had materials that we shared and two of us have sewn masks to share with us all!!! We have also shopped for each other to keep the numbers down in our community in times of COVID....love our block! Vicci Ryan I joined Caremongering - Kamloops some weeks ago on Facebook. This is a wonderful group who have all banned together to help as much as they can. I had not been there long when I noticed the kind heart of Jan Diana. She was doing everything she personally could to help people by shopping for them, doing food bank runs, giving information for bottle donations to the food bank at General Grants, helping to find phones for people needing help due to domestic violence and to buying extreme amounts of hand sanitizer, bottling and then delivering to people who needed. Her only hope is to get enough donations to purchase more as she needs it for people. Most of her answers to people in the group start with “of course”. This lady embodies Kindness. Thank you Jan from all of us. Chandra Collins

Donia Koeck offered on Facebook to anyone interested that she was making a trip to Costco, and rather than have more people at the store offered to pick things up for others and drop off at their homes. A couple of weeks ago, I asked if she could try and find some cleaning sprays, wipes anything and she said yes. (I am immune compromised). She wrote later that day that the store was yet again out of these supplies but that she had an extra package of Lysol wipes she could drop off. We said not to worry as we didn’t want to take away from her family but she dropped them off anyway at no charge (refusing payment only asking we pay it forward). In a time like this, I couldn’t help but cry at the kindness a complete stranger showed us wanting us to stay safe. She is an angel on earth in our eyes and would love for her to be recognized as such. She is very humble. We will never forget her kindness in a very stressful time. Tanys Wiedrick I have never met Jan Diana, but she is front and centre on Kamloops Caremongering. She purchases bulk hand sanitizer and bottles it AND delivers it for almost nothing. I am a senior with underlying health conditions and was one of the lucky recipients. She also shops for seniors and is the first person to raise her hand if there is someone in need. I expect she will receive many nominations. I hope we do meet someday! Irene Bazell

Homemade bread and a ‘zany’ accountant I want to recognize John Zubak. He has been so generous in sharing information on how to cook bread, when yeast became in shortage, he did a video on Facebook on how to create your own breast yeast starter. He has been amazing reaching out to Kamloops community and his videos have reached beyond that. I connected a friend to his video and she received this kind generous support to find a solution. Thank you John for your kindness, generosity and calm disposition in all that you do! Jeanie Cardinal I want to recognize Hettie Buck and Sharon Chaytor of the Clearwater region. I have known Hettie for many years through work and community relationships. When I put a call out for some needed supplies she recommended Sharon as the go to person. Sharon was so kind and generous to offer support and supplies needed. Thank you Hettie and Sharon for your networking and generosity of kindness! Jeanie Cardinal

I would like to nominate Alexander Zalmui, owner of Thompson Cleaners and Tailors at Sahali Mall. Alexander has volunteered to sew masks for first responders with sew the curve. He has been working tirelessly sewing masks in addition to keeping his normal business open. He is very deserving of a reward and recognition for what he is doing to help the community during this pandemic. Ian Allarie

Accountants are generally not well known for engaging in zany antics such as dressing up in gigantic T-Rex dinosaur costumes to bring happiness and smiles to isolating others. AnnMarie Aase, however, does exactly just that. She is the originator of Caremongering Kamloops, the largest Facebook group of its kind in Canada to date. Kamloops is noted for its caring and AnnMarie has always known that. Starting this group was just her way to “pay it forward” after living through SARS in Vietnam during the initial epidemic. Friends describe her as creative and driven. Because of her efforts, people in isolation can now come together to share stories, have a laugh and possibly find some others to help. Thank you AnnMarie for taking the time to care, the initiative to create and the willingness to bring a smile to our face (you should see the photos of her dressed up as this beast!) Helena Paivinen

I would like to nominate Sharon Roberts. She is doing her shopping, mine and two other people’s. She also works at the church and helps with meals and does a lot of baking for them. Tina Cole

I want to give a shout out to her for acting with such thoughtfulness of others and generosity of giving as is always in her nature to do so. Thank you Angie!! Jeanie Cardinal Being kind does not always appear in exactly the same way. Sometimes it can be as subtle as a light touch, barely imperceptible except to the person in need. In other instances it is loud and quite brash, like a drive through birthday parade during COVID -19. Or maybe it’s about consistency, like Steve Wade showing up, on a daily basis to give us a laugh on the Caremongering Kamloops page on Facebook. You make me smile. To some, your daily posting of humour may not qualify as being kind but to me they scream up one hell of a storm! Every day you take a moment to reflect upon how to make a stranger’s life better. You take a minute each day to post something fun. To me, that is kindness in its fuzziest warmth form......making someone smile,

giving them a laugh, a chuckle or two. It is a priceless as love. It lightens up what can sometimes seem like a seemingly endless loop of nothing but heavy, grey and depressing, continuous groundhog dog days. Helena Paivinen We live in a semi gated complex of about 52 homes. One of our residents, Debi Adams, is a very conscientious neighbor by consistently working to make our strata a more cohesive group. She organizes and co-hosts the annual block party, has organized a strata book club as well as starting a cookbook. Post COVID she is a perfect example of obeying all rules. Our clubhouse/library is temporarily closed, so Debi volunteered to pull books from the strata library, sanitize them and place them on her driveway three days per week allowing us to replenish our reading material. We can leave books in a seperate container that she sanitizes, strongly suggesting gloves be worn. A wonderful example of following Dr. Henry’s rules. Barb Cameron

Mother’s Day help and sidewalk artists made a huge impact for them, allowing them to create a surprise to gift to me. Aside from this, Jam has also bottled and distributed hand sanitizer and gloves to people who need them and offers her time to do grocery shopping for those who cannot get out due to Covid 19. She is a local hero. Erin Sims

Coun. KATHY SINCLAIR

In response to your call for suggestions of people to profile for Kindloops, there is an amazing chalk artist that has been creating beautiful sidewalk art during the pandemic near the top of Thor on the north side. Lots of inspirational and hopeful sayings. I’ve attached a photo I took of one of my favourites. Here are a few more, taken by Paula Schmidt (cc’d here). The first one is a bit hard to read, but it’s lovely: Fairy Tales are more than true; not because they tell us that Dragons exist, but because they tell us that Dragons can BE BEATEN. Many, many people in lower Sahali have enjoyed these expressions of hope and beauty on our frequent walks in the neighbourhood. I hope the consider it worthy of a Kindloops profile – you may have to hunt a bit to find the exact identity! Gisela Ruckert Sidewalk chalk

Coun. SADIE HUNTER

I would like to highlight the generousity of my friend and colleague Kathy Sinclair who has been delivering groceries and goods to those in need on her electric bike. She piles as much as she possibly can onto her bike and then makes sure the goods get to where they need to go - even if that means riding up to Sahali from downtown, She is one of the kindest and most selfless people I know. Sadie Hunter A lady named Jan Diana offered her time and supplies to help kids of single moms make cards and gifts for their mothers for mothers day, because the kids didn’t have the option to do so at school this year. As a single mom to two kids that were sad to not have help with a gift, this

She also has made scarves & pillows for cancer & chemo patients as well as cleaning the wigs at the wig bank. The list of Marg’s contributions to our community at Rivershore is a long one and Marg is always the first one with her hand up to volunteer. Carol Lodge Last week I had my annual mammogram at the hospital. This is an annual event as I was diagnosed with breast cancer 13 years ago. My treat to myself is to pickup a special coffee so I decided to do a Starbucks drive through. When my husband and I got up to the window we were told that it was paid for by the person in front of us. This little act of kindness made my otherwise stressful day “happy and thankful”. Thank you to whoever you were! Sharon Anderberg

Help to walk from stranger in parking lot On May 30, I witnessed this awesome act of kindness I had to share. I do not know either person but what I heard and saw was heartwarming. This young lady asked the gentleman if she could help him cross the parking lot. He responded yes please. She put out her arm and helped him every step chatting along the way. Thank you to the youth that are still out there smiling. Michelle Laskoski My neighbour, Debi Adams has a heart that overflows with kindness. She always talks about her many acts of kindness as “just something to keep me busy”. Before the pandemic she was already the force behind our annual block party, the strata book club and a lending library in our common room. No sooner had the restrictions come into place and she was dropping off handmade cards to any who requested a supply, putting Easter creations at our doors and, best of all, moving the lending library out of doors 3 days a week. She would disagree, but in my mind, she definitely deserves a reward! Leslie Hall

My Dad is kind to everyone. In the fall, his buddy Harold found himself without a place to store his camper and truck so my Dad let him park it on the side/back of the house with plans to sell this spring. Turned out that the camper was filled to the top with stuff. As items came out, my Dad would wash n clean and attempt to sell come flea market season! Well covid killed that dream. So I suggested we post the stuff online. My Dad doesn’t have a computer and after witnessing me selling my 1967 Mustang in less than a week (after being parked in his carport for 20 years) he said let’s try! So we started off with some stuff and be darned if the 2 of us have now sold 90 per cent of Harold’s stuff but a lot of our stuff too. Harold left a message last night that he will be going into the hospital soon as he has a lot of ongoing health issues. It melts my heart at how much my Dad has helped Harold in his time of need. Everyone deserves a friend like my Dad! I’m so proud to have inherited those special traits as well — as one is not measured by the things they have, but the things they do for others. Kim Blight

I would like to celebrate Linda Bonner for her many acts of kindness, especially with those in need. Her daily infectious smile to everyone she sees begins in Riverbend. Despite using a walker to get around, she manages to assist a blind resident make her meal choices for each day or making sure to be at the door to greet another upon her return from a medical appointment, as this resident has no family here. Linda is actively involved with our local Kidney Foundation branch, selling T-shirts from her bachelor apartment in Riverbend to registering participants for our annual Kidney Foundation Walk and all proceeds remain here in Kamloops to assist our residents she assures me! During

Covid-19 she took her kindness to another level by spending five hours daily to call many in need and friends like me I am happy to say in hopes of helping with our mental health. She has and always has followed Bonny Henry’s advice BE KIND and during this Covid-19 STAY HOME. Karen Kelly I just wanted to submit a story about Shelly Johnson, a professor and research chair at TRU, who is using her quilting and sewing skills to immediately and rapidly respond to requests from homemade cloth masks with beautiful Indigenous fabric designs. She made her first batch for family members and friends on front lines, and then for Indigenous elders and more friends. Next, communities and Elders who requested masks received these gifts. Requesters are asking to buy them when they heard these beautiful masks were being made. She has refused, gifting them only. She and her partner indicated that over 350 masks have been sewn, smudged and sent. Please keep my name out of the story, just because I want her highlighted and not me for submitting the story. Tennis buddy helps I’m a senior and a shut in. It was difficult for me to get groceries or something from the pharmacy. I have no family here and no access to a vehicle. I am lucky to have found an incredible young women by the name of Angela Trudeau-Sangha, without her kindness I’m not sure what I would have done. She has take me to do grocery shop or gone to the store for me. I know she doesn’t only do this for me. So she has been such a blessing. So very thankful for her kindness. Val McIvor My friend and tennis buddy sewed us two cloth masks for use when we go shopping. One had light blue stripes and the other a rosy floral pattern. She made one extra large because the male in the household has a big head and a beard. She put a velcro connector in the back to avoid having elastic irritate the skin behind our ears. She refused to take any money from us, saying “glad to be of help.” Her name is Jan Newlove. Joy Conrad-Rice My coworker Michelle Rutsatz noticed how hard it has been to work full time from home while parenting my only child - a usually social and active 5-yearold boy. Like many people, he and I

have been at home for 8 weeks now. My husband has been working 12 hour days managing a PPE and safety gear supply business in town. During this time my little guy has developed anxiety and has not left my side. He sits on my lap through every conference call, comes with me for every bathroom break and sleeps with us every night. Last week my coworker Michelle called me up and told me she was sending her 16 year old over (who has also been social distancing at home with family) to play with my little guy. Then she asked me what she could make us to send over for dinner. So today my little guy had a great time and I was able to run our 2 hour monthly work conference call knowing my little guy was happily playing. What a beautiful break for me and for him. What a beautiful friend. What a beautiful family. Stacey Olson-Steele A huge thank you to the amazing “Bikers Against Bullying” and our awesome youth for doing a full day of gardening & making this a beautiful yard. Today you have made a difference & helped make a house a home. Thank you David Jackson & Mitch Turner for your ongoing support to A Way Home Kamloops! Katherine McParland
