SPRING-SUMMER

ROAD TO ADVENTURE STAYING SAFE ON THE TRAILS

After being cooped more than usual during a winter amid the pandemic, many are turning to trails to get a healthy dose of fresh air and exercise. As a result, the trails are busy. Here are a few tips to help keep you and other trail users safe during the COVID 19 pandemic, courtesy Mountain Biking BC: • Avoid crowded parks and trails. • Plan to ride during less busy times. • Don’t linger and avoid gathering in groups. • Bike solo or only with members of your household or social bubble. • Keep at least two metres (six feet) from others when not riding. • Allow at least 10 metres (30 feet) of space when following another rider and provide at least two metres (six feet) of space when passing another rider. • When taking breaks, move well off the trail. • Practice low-risk riding. • Wash or sanitize hands after touching communal surfaces like gates or garbage bins. • Stay home if you are feeling sick. • Stay informed and respect trail closures when posted.

ROAD TO ADVENTURE Ways to prepare for wading into the wilderness If you venture into the wilderness, you should be aware of certain health risks. Make sure you are prepared for the activity you are doing and where you are going. Always use well-marked trails when hiking and be sure to stay on them to avoid getting lost.

The three T’s for wilderness survival Whether your activity is during the summer or winter, on land or water, remember the three T’s and follow these simple steps: Trip Planning • Plan your travel route • Know the terrain and conditions • Check the weather • Always fill out a trip plan. Go online to AdventureSmart at www.adventuresmart. ca/tripplan/tripplan.php Training • Obtain the knowledge and skills you need before heading out • Know and stay within your limits Taking the Essentials • Always carry the essentials and know how to use them: -- Flashlight -- Fire making kit -- Signalling device (i.e. whistle) -- Extra food and water -- Extra clothing -- Navigational/communication devices -- First aid kit -- Emergency blanket/shelter -- Pocket knife -- Sun protection Add other equipment specific to your chosen activity, season and location. If possible, travel with a companion who can give you a hand to overcome difficulties or emergencies. Ensure everyone with you understands what to do in case of an emergency. Equipment failure and lack of reception are very possible in the outdoors, so consider carrying a map and compass as a backup. What can I do to stay safe if there are wild animals in the area? We must respect the fact the wilderness is home to wild animals. As visitors, we must do our part to help conserve their natural habitat. Animals can be unpredictable and dangerous if you get too close, especially bears and female moose with calves.

Learn about the animals and wildlife in the area you’ll be travelling to. Check for reported wildlife before going into their habitat. Park wardens, wildlife officers and signs posted at the trail head can help. Be alert and pay attention to wildlife and signs of animal activity. When visiting wilderness areas, do not attempt to feed or touch any wild animals. Take special care to avoid contact with any animal that appears to be sick or dead. Remember that wild animals can carry various diseases. If a wild animal bites or scratches you, wash any wounds thoroughly with water and speak with your health-care provider. You may need the tetanus vaccine. Rabies is a very serious disease carried by a small percentage of bats in B.C. Do not touch live or dead bats. If you come in contact with a bat, wash any wounds thoroughly with soap and water under moderate pressure for at least 15 minutes. Report direct physical contact with a bat to your health care provider or local health unit immediately. Treatment must begin as soon as possible to prevent rabies, which can be fatal if left untreated. How can I protect myself from fleas, ticks and other insects? Fleas and ticks are tiny insects that can bite or burrow part way into your skin and draw blood out before dropping off. They can carry and spread some diseases. Speak with your health-care provider if you have a flea or tick bite. Check your whole body for ticks, including folds of skin. If you find a tick attached to your skin, the best way to remove it is by grasping it with a pair of tweezers. Pull it gently, straight up and out. If its mouth parts are imbedded deeply, a health care provider may have to remove the tick. Wash the bite wound thoroughly with disinfected water and soap. Do not touch the tick with your hands. You may wish to save the tick in a small plastic or glass container to submit it for testing through your health care provider. Put a cotton ball dampened with water in the container to keep it alive. If you develop a fever or the area around the bite gets infected, the tick will help later with deciding how to treat you. See a health-care provider if any illness occurs a few weeks after a tick bite. — Province of B.C.

ROAD TO ADVENTURE Traffic on park trails in Kamloops busier than ever

T

he COVID-19 pandemic and its associated restrictions has led to more and more people to seek solace in the trails in Kamloops. And statistics from the city show Kamloopsians are truly enjoying the Great Outdoors. As a result, crews are doing more work maintaining the trail system, while the city is asking residents to take care when exploring the more natural areas of Kamloops. More hiking, mountain biking and dog walking amid the pandemic led to a 64 per cent increase in city trail usage last year and the highest-ever recorded numbers of people out and about. The city’s parks usage data is compiled for a dozen trail heads across Kamloops, including

Aviation Way in Brocklehurst and West Highland Park in Aberdeen. In 2020, the city saw one-million visits, compared to 612,000 visits the previous year. In addition, it is the most visits the city has recorded since it first started tracking in 2006 (though a couple of trail heads have been added since that time). City of Kamloops parks manager Jeff Putnam explained

Epic lines await, except at the lift.

R _ Gabe Neron and Colin Cameron T _ DH P _ Reuben Krabbe

the data does not provide exact usage figures, with only a sampling of trails counted, and it does not represent people, but visits counted via a laser counter hidden at various trailheads. However, Putnam added, the numbers are useful in indicating trends and trail usage over time. Putnam said the city’s population is growing, but not enough to account for a 64 per cent spike in trail usage, meaning more

people are getting outside. Putnam attributed the increase in 2020 to the pandemic, including pandemic puppies leading to more dog walking on city trails and an increase in the number of people taking up cycling and hiking. Putnam said the trend continued in winter months, with more people snowshoeing and snowbiking. Putnam said the city’s investment in natural space is contributing positively to residents’ quality of life. However, as a result of increased usage, the trails are seeing more wear and tear, including more dog feces and the trampling of vegetation. Putnam said the most significant wear and tear has resulted from “braiding” of trails, essentially people making their own shortcuts and not sticking to

formalized pathways. He said that due to semi-arid environmental conditions, it can take many years to rehabilitate vegetation in the hills around Kamloops. While reseeding can bring back grasses quickly, cacti, sagebrush and ponderosa pine trees are slow to return. Putnam said city staff have put up signs to close informal trails in Kenna Cartwright Park, the largest municipal park in the province. “That’s the biggest challenge we’ve got right now,” Putnam said. “We’re hiring more staff, we’ll be doing proactive trail maintenance — in terms of getting on top of informal trails that started — improving signage and, of course, we’ve got a lot more dog walkers, so there’s a lot more managing of the waste on the trails,” he said.

ROAD TO ADVENTURE

DAVE EAGLES PHOTOS/KTW

Camping season is just around the corner The Discover Camping reservation service offers B.C. residents an opportunity to book a campsite two months in advance of their arrival date. People who live in the province will have priority access to campsite reservations throughout the summer. “Our provincial parks have never been as important as they are right now,” Environment

Minister George Heyman said. “They provide a special place to safely connect with nature and improve our health and well-being during these difficult times. “We are all looking forward to another summer of camping and outdoor recreation in B.C. and, while public health concerns and advice remain, we are asking people to pick a

campground as close to home as possible to avoid long road trips and non-essential travel.” Reservations can be made no further than two months out from arrival. Since COVID-19 is still impacting the province and travel opportunities are limited, this year’s camping season is expected to be busy. On July 8, people living in

other provinces can reserve campsites for the remainder of the season. Reservations can be made online at discovercamping.ca. Opening provincial campgrounds while adhering to public health guidelines means it will not be business as usual in many campgrounds. There will be restrictions on the number of people allowed

at a campsite, along with restrictions on group sites. Reservations for day-use facilities, including picnic shelters and halls, remain closed for the 2021 season. More information on reservations and facilities, including up-to-date information on the status of favourite provincial parks, is available online at bcparks.ca.

DID YOU KNOW?

• B.C.’s provincial parks receive more than 23-million visits each year. • During the last three years, more than 1,200 campsites have been added to provincial parks and recreation sites. More sites are being added this season, including a new, fully serviced 90-site campground in Manning Park set to open this spring. • Of the 10,700 campsites BC Parks manages, approximately 55 per cent are reservable and 45 per cent remain available on a first-come, first-served basis. • One of the largest park systems in North America, B.C. has more than 1,000 provincial parks, recreation areas, conservancies, ecological reserves and protected areas covering approximately 14.4 per cent of the provincial land base.

ROAD TO ADVENTURE Prep those youngsters for their first hunting trip A young person’s first hunting trip can be an incredible experience, sparking a lifelong love and appreciation for nature and wildlife. Parents who grew up hunting likely remember their first hunting trip and want to re-create that experience for their own children. As memorable as a first hunting trip can be, parents of youngsters might not recall all the pretrip preparation their own folks did to make that first hunting experience so memorable. Such preparation can ensure today’s youngsters enjoy the same magical experience their parents did when going hunting for the first time. • Make sure kids are ready. Kids’ maturity levels merit consideration before taking them hunting for the first time. Children may experience a

range of emotions on their first hunting trips. Such emotions can include excitement, nervousness, sadness, and/or guilt. Parents should assess their children’s maturity levels prior to announcing a trip to make sure

they’re ready for that emotional roller coaster. Kids mature at their own pace, so assess each child individually, resisting the temptation to assume one child is ready at a given age because an older sibling was ready at the same age.

Parents should first take their youngsters along as hunting apprentices, which allows them to participate in the rituals of the hunt while their parents can gauge how mature they are to handle the hunt itself. • Make sure kids can handle their guns. It is crucial that kids know how to use their guns before they go hunting for the first time. Kids should know how to load and unload, check the chamber and turn the safety on and off. They should be confident with their guns, feeling comfortable enough to pull their firearms to their shoulders, get the gun’s sights on the animal and pull the trigger.

your adventure... adventure... your

• Temper youngsters’ expectations. Hunting is a rewarding hobby, but also one that requires a lot of work. Weather also can be unpleasant during hunting season and that can quickly spoil youngsters’ impressions of hunting. Temper kids’ expectations in advance of a hunting trip so they know it won’t necessarily be all fun. In addition, let children know many hunting trips end without a kill. • Focus on the fun factor. Surveys indicate young hunters are more excited to have fun and enjoy quality outdoor time than they are by the prospect of bagging and taking home a trophy animal. Parents should focus on the fun and the beauty of nature when taking youngsters hunting to ensure kids have as good a time as possible.

SPRING-SUMMER

ROAD TO ADVENTURE RV LIFE BASICS FOR BEGINNERS

A

lthough travel amid the COVID-19 pandemic is limited, the roads and border will again open up. When that time comes, road trips will again offer a unique way to travel that affords people the freedom to stop and take in sights and scenery on their own time. Travelling the highways and back roads gives people a chance to slow down and really enjoy an adventure. Such trips can be made even more special by traveling in recreational vehicles, often referred to as RVs. The RV industry has been consistently growing for years. According to the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association, the

industry is responsible for more than $7 billion in retail sales in Canada. Millions of Canadians go RV camping each year and new RV enthusiasts are getting on the road every day. Such travellers can benefit from the wisdom and experience of those who have blazed trails before them. • Budget for all RV expenses. It can be tempting to overspend on the RV itself, but buyers should factor in other expenses, including hoses, wheel chocks, levelers, navigation systems and campsite fees. • Consider the size of the RV. Buy the smallest RV that is comfortable. Doing so opens up more options regarding places to stay. In addition, small RVs are more

easily maneuvered on the road than large ones, especially for novices. • Add time to your ETAs. The estimated time for trips that popular map and navigation software provide are customized to average car speeds. RVs generally move more slowly than cars, so allow for more time to arrive at your destination. This is an important consideration if you need to be at a campground by a certain time. • Save condiment packages.

When visiting restaurants and carryout places, save any unused condiment packets, napkins and packages of disposable cutlery. These items take up much less room than full-sized packages and space inside RVs is often at a premium. • Invest in storage boxes. Store belongings neatly and cleanly in plastic storage containers. Choose uniformly shaped and sized bins, which are more easily stacked and stored than bins of varying sizes.

• Pack a paper map. Navigation services that are powered by satellite or cell phone signals may not be available in inclement weather or when traveling through mountain ranges. Paper maps can fill the void and keep you on track. • Check towing capacity. Make sure you do not exceed the manufacturer-recommended towing capacity. This is usually found on a sticker in the driver’s door. Overloading the vehicle can cause transmission issues.
