KINDLOOPS Kindness is what KTW’s Kindloops program — presented by Valley First, a division of First West Credit Union — is all about. In these pages, we celebrate acts of kindness Kamloopsians have undertaken, acts of kindness our readers have added to our website at kindloops.com. We hope these snippets of the better side of all of us will help bring smiles to faces as we continue to endure so many challenges. As Kahlil Gibran was quoted as saying: “Kindness is like snow — it beautifies everything it covers.”

PAY IT FORWARD THE CAT’S MEOW HUGGING HERO A huge shout out to the gentleman in the Paladin Security vehicle who was in front of me in the Lansdowne Street Tim Hortons drive-thru lineup on July 19. I had ordered some breakfast to take to my elderly father and, when I got to the cashier window to pay, I found out this very kind gentleman had already paid for my order. I cannot tell you how this unexpected gesture made my day. Thank you so much. Pay it forward is a real thing and can really make a difference in what is happening in someone else’s life. Whoever you are, I am very grateful. — Bev Archambault

I had misplaced my cat’s harness and needed one for his vet appointment. So I thought I’d throw him in his cat carrier for the 1.5-minute drive to Go Fetch in Valleyview to buy a harness, then head off to the vet’s to investigate why my cat was out of sorts. When the plan failed miserably and instantly (my cat had a disgusting accident in his carrier the moment we got into the car), I called Go Fetch, frantic and upset, telling them I needed help and was heading their way. I know I was not articulate in my request for help as I wasn’t sure how to get a “messy” cat without a usable carrier or a harness into the store to buy a harness. Staff greeted me at the door, invited me in (messy, unleashed cat and all) and, before I knew it, they fitted him for a harness and even cleaned him up. They were so over-the-top friendly and helpful to my cat, Sherman, and myself. I appreciate the two ladies there for being so awesome. — Jennifer Jones

Proud to be a part of this very kind community.

My good friend, Sheila Nystoruk, has a heart of gold and makes it her mission to spread positivity on social media. She chooses to regularly post kindness quotes and messages to lift the spirits of others and to encourage kindness. If you have ever had to pleasure of meeting this beautiful soul, you know that she embodies what she posts. Did I also mention she has the most amazing hugs? Thank you, Sheila, for making the world a kinder place. — Lori Henderson

SON A SCOOTER SAVIOUR My son, Alex, and I were driving up Columbia Street when we saw a elderly gentleman on the sidewalk, trying to pull his scooter up the hill. It was obvious he was really struggling. Sadly, some people walked right past him, as though they didn’t even see his plight. My son said, “Mom,

turn around” — so that’s what I did. Alex jumped out and asked if he could help. This poor old guy was so grateful and thanked my son. The old guy was out of breath, so Alex suggested he sit on his scooter while he pushed it up the hill for him. It was quite a ways

before we reached a point where it was flat and the gentleman could actually use the last of the battery power to get him to Superstore and some shelter. He thanked Alex very much and was on his way. My son then jumped into the Jeep, exhausted. — Correen Genshorek

Emily Nicole was going around collecting fans to give to us old folks, who were suffering in the extreme heat. She drove all over town to pick them up and drop them off for us. She was so nice and gracious to me and I wish

to be able to help her and give back. It would be nice for her to receive gas cards or a gift basket containing some nice things. Us old folks don’t usually have extra cash around, so if someone can afford to do it for Emily, it

would be a nice gesture. She is a nice young lady who has been helping us old folks since the beginning of the pandemic by also picking up our groceries when we need the help. — Joanne Scott

MOTHER’S DAY GRATITUDE On Mother’s Day, I left about 15 pairs of handmade earrings and pendants (I’m an artist) at the base of some trees in a local park. I left a message that said, “Happy Mother’s Day. Take for yourself

or for a gift.” They were all mounted on cards as if in a sale. A little girl brought some home to her mom. She looked up my name (it’s on the cards) and sent me an email, telling me how it was the most

amazing Mother’s Day gift because her daughter brought her home earrings. It is nice to know someone appreciated the endeavour. — Name withheld by request

LOVING OUR NEIGHBOURS We have the most incredible neighbours. We adore them and they have been so kind to us over the years. We recently found ourselves in a precarious situation and, once again, they showered us in love. I was in the hospital due to an unexpected surgery. I was having a C-section

after quite a rough labour, with my husband right by my side. We had let the lawn grow as we wanted to help the bees and participate in “No Mow May.” Our incredible neighbours didn’t know what to do to help us out when we were in the hospital. So, Marty Young decid-

ed, at the end of May when our lawn was a mess and we were at Royal Inland Hospital, to mow our lawn. This act of kindness was not small. It meant we got to come home and focus on recovering and spending time connecting with our wonderful new baby boy. — Kelsey Ashe

MANAGER WAS CALM, COOL I live at the Hillside Walk apartment complex, which is located beside where the Canada Day wildfire threatened he Juniper Ridge neighbourhood. On the night of the fire, the tenants were quite panicked and nobody seemed to know if we were to stay or leave. The next thing I know, the building manager, Kevin, was on site, talking to everyone and providing some calm direction. He advised us to have a bag packed, but added there was no need to leave, unless we wanted to, and that tenants would be informed quickly if there was any change in directions. He stayed on site until about 1 a.m., talking to the returning tenants after the nearby evacuation order was lifted. He was all over the property, walking in the rain and going from person to person. I later learned that he lives in Sun Rivers, which also had a nearby fire at the same time, yet he chose to be with us instead of worrying about himself. Kevin could have just stayed home and protected his own property, but he instead came out to ensure his tenants were safe. I think that kindness deserves mention. — Mark Nelson

BEN IS CLEANING UP KAMLOOPS I have an office downtown where I come into contact with a wide variety of Kamloops citizens. Most are aware of Ben James. Ben is a young man who people might easily overlook or misunderstand. He possibly has some limitations that prevent him from participating in the labour force in a traditional way, but he cleans the downtown streets meticulously every day. He is not paid, but he is diligent and I’ve seen him working morning to night on some days. While he might not be a typical candidate for a kindness honour because he is not connected with the usual volunteer and community agencies, I think he has created a benefit to our community that exceeds what Kamloops can provide through usual paid or contracted means. I believe he is well deserving of an honour for his contributions to our community. — Lori Seeley

PB&J TIMES 20,000-PLUS Georgia Martin Jackson has been making 300 peanut butter and jam sandwiches for the Kamloops COVID Meal Train. Georgia has been making these sandwiches two days per week for 65 weeks, which amounts to 130 volunteer days and 520 volunteer hours. A total of 20,800 peanut butter and jam sandwiches (420 sandwiches weekly) have been created for the homeless and others living in poverty. These delicious sandwiches were distributed far and wide, from Aberdeen to Valleyview and from downtown to the North Shore, feeding people in the streets, motels and housing projects. She is the most dedicated volunteer who has never missed a scheduled day and she has also been donating water and juice boxes regularly so people have something to wash down the sandwiches. — Glenn Hilke

DAVID PAYNE HELPS US ALL SMILE I think David Payne deserves to be recognized for the amazing work he has done on the Living and Growing Up In Kamloops Facebook page. He started the page when a lot of us were at a very low point. His kindness and generosity in allowing hope and laughter to grow and expand can never be replaced. I know there have been days when the only laughter has come from reading comments and reliving the fun of the past. I would bet that if you asked the other 19,000-plus page members, they would agree that rec-ognition of David’s contribution is more then deserving. — Cindy Herrick
