ith homelessness statistics reaching alarming numbers in recent years, the United Way and the Kamloops and District Real Estate Association (KADREA) recently teamed up to put realtors on the streets to educate them about the realities of the problem, and about what they could do to help. “Together we were trying to address housing issues and homelessness within Kamloops,” said Antarang Das, communications and technology manager for KADREA. This month-long program was called “A Path to Home” and it started on February 5 with the “Seeing is Believing Tour”. For this part of the program, local realtors visited a number of low-income housing developments, such as Sparrow House, Mission Flats, The Branch, and Elizabeth Court. In doing so, they had the

chance to see what life was like in those places, and to understand the importance of lowincome subsidized and transitional housing. The program continued on February 14 with the “Day of Caring”. On for this part of the program, realtors not only visited the Emerald House Shelter, the rolled up their sleeves and got to work helping to paint the building. The Emerald House Shelter is a co-ed emergency shelter in downtown Kamloops that offers beds for men, women, and children. Its focus is to help homeless individuals and families find homes and supports in the community to help maintain stable housing. The program finished up on February 28 with realtors donating housing products for apartment kits that were put together by the United Way. These kits were made up of vital housing items like cleaning supplies, toiletries, and

linens — the sorts of things you’d need when going into a home for the first time. According to Das, whether or not this is a program that continues into the future will depend on whether or not homelessness continues to be as a great an issue in the area as it has been. “They’ve tried to cater to the problem that we have today, which is homelessness in this area, and this homelessness is stagnant,” he said. “It’s not growing alarmingly, but it’s not reducing as well.” But whether or not it happens again, this first “A Path to Home” program has been a success in helping to educate those in the real estate profession about the realities of homelessness. “Realtors have shown great interest in this campaign,” Das said. “If it was not for the realtors this campaign wouldn’t have been a success.”
