Today’s children and families often have limited opportunities to connect with nature, a phenomenon Richard Louv calls the ”naturedeficit disorder”. We all need a regular dose of “Vitamin G” – green environments; a key ingredient to a healthy life. Direct exposure to nature is essential for healthy childhood development and for the physical and emotional health of children and adults. “People with less access to green space report more medical symptoms and poorer health overall” according to researcher, Frances Ming Kuo. Step outside your front door, pause and look around… discover the beautiful natural playground that surrounds us. Kamloops has exceptional parks, which provide us with an abundance of opportunities for Vitamin G. Be creative and enjoy spontaneous play with your family. Go on a treasure hunt through Kenna Cartright or Peterson Creek Park. How many items can you find from our natural environment? Create an obstacle course at your neighborhood playground or tot lot, or just enjoy reading a book or playing “I spy”.

Aquatics
Think Healthy. Swim Healthy. Be Healthy!
Swimming is an excellent way to keep active and enjoy the benefits of a healthy life. Canadians love spending time in pools, oceans, lakes, rivers, and hot tubs each year and most people have a safe and healthy time enjoying the water. However, it is important to be aware of ways to prevent recreational water illnesses so everyone can maximize the health benefits of swimming while minimizing the risk of illness and injury.
Adapted Aquatics Are you looking for Adapted Aquatics? We offer Swimming lessons for children with developmental or physical disabilities. See page 11.

Early Years FACE TIME REDEFINED
Singing songs, telling stories, playing games is real face time with children. Children learn about the world and their place in it through their conversations, play activities, and routines with parents and families. Disconnect to reconnect by putting away the laptop and cell phone, turn off the TV and engage with your child and explore our community. Kamloops has some amazing parks and venues designed for children. Unplug, get outside and enjoy this special time with your little one.
Did you know? Talking and listening to your child at their level is one of the simplest, yet most effective ways to create an environment that nurtures and strengthens their speech and language development.

Discover Mother Nature
Autumn is the absolute best time to get out and discover nature! Beautiful fall colours, warm days and cool nights. Kamloops is an amazing city to explore -- you can step outside your front door and find nature. It might be in the grass growing through the pavement cracks, the ants than run across the paving slabs or the moss growing on the dark side of a wall. Take a moment to slow down for a minute and spend even just 20 minutes out on a nature walk with your child. Here are a few tips for getting the most out of a nature walk with your little one: 1. Stay close to home or wherever you have parked the car – This way if your little one gets tired you aren’t too far away from familiar comforts. 2. Let them lead – Children learn through discovery. Allow them to explore their own interests at their pace. 3. G et excited – They will be too. 4. Walk whatever the weather – Your child will love experiencing the change in weather. Rain presents puddles, wind makes the world dance and snow and ice creates a slippery and fun surface. 5. T ake a container such as a basket or carrier bag Allow your little one to collect treasures along the way. 6. Go with someone else – Socializing with others is always fun.
7. Explore using all of your senses – Take time for your little one smells, feels, sees and listens. Wherever possible let them taste too.

Children
When you watch a child in nature, you can see their curiosity and wonder for their natural world around them. Getting outside is important to explore and discover that we are all a part of the environment and to start fostering a relationship with nature. Studies have shown that spending time in nature helps with recall and memory, problem solving and creativity.

Amelia
It is vitally important that our environment that we are discovering is healthy, especially since we all rely on the natural environment to provide us with fresh air to breath, water to drink and food to eat. If our environment is unhealthy, this can make us unhealthy.
Did you Know?
Almost 50% of children aged 8-16 years watch 3-5 hours of television a day. These kids who watch the most hours of television have the highest incidence of obesity. (Word on Health)

Art has a special place for Amelia, it’s her time to be creative, it is relaxing, fun and easy can be done anywhere. She enjoys taking her time to complete an art project such as sketching, painting and sculpting. The thing she loves about the fall is how colourful the leaves are, cool breezes, bugs and Halloween. Besides her passion for art Amelia likes to go hunting for snails!
Raising Healthy Children
Physical literacy is learning the skills and having the confidence to enjoy many physical activities. Just as learning the alphabet is needed to read, the development of fundamental movement and sport skills help children to feel good about physical activity. The ABC’s – agility, balance, coordination are the skills that support physical literacy. The basic environments where children should learn fundamental movement skills are on the ground, in the water, on the snow and ice and in the air.

Marion Wyse
I met with Rhonda Eden, a trainer at TCC not willingly, but at the insistence of my boss. I had the added motivation of needing to keep up with large dog Sam, who had experienced a serious injury and had to be walked daily. Working with Rhonda has allowed me to shift my thinking to a healthy lifestyle; thinking about proper diet, quitting smoking and adopting a more positive thought process and attitude towards exercise. 7 months later I am now meeting with Rhonda twice a week. Although I can’t say yet I look forward to those days at the track, at least I know I’ll feel a whole lot better when I leave!

C.S.A approved hockey helmets are recommended for all recreational skaters. Brain injury is the number one killer and disabler of people under the age of 45, with 14,000 British Columbians acquiring new Brain Injuries each year. Wearing a helmet is the easiest way to prevent brain injury while on the ice.

ActiveAging Fall means comfy sweaters, changing leaves, baked goods, and foods that feature apples, spice and pumpkins However, this season can be frustrating, as the inconsistent temperatures can make it more difficult to stay outside for long periods of time. Despite the falling temperatures, here are some tips for continuing outdoor exercise:
Slow it down Older adults who enjoy cycling or jogging will find that it’s typically harder to participate in these activities when the weather is chilly. Instead, try some low-impact exercises that will be less stressful on your heart and lungs. Pick your time of day Kamloops sees a wide range of temperatures throughout the day. Knowing that the mornings can be very cool and the afternoons can be hot, schedule your outdoor exercise for your comfort. Make it social If you enjoy working out primarily because the scenery makes it easy to keep your mind occupied, then you may want to find a way to make your workout routine social.
Keep fit & have fun! 58
Strategic Health Alliance PROGRAM PARTICIPANT EXPERIENCE
In November of 2013, we were introduced to the Strategic Health Alliance exercise programming at the Tournament Capital Centre. The programs offered for clinical condition rehabilitation are amazing! The professional and volunteer staff were caring, understanding, patient, positive and knowledgeable. Information sessions are presented to help participants understand specific medical conditions and concerns. The team provides a fantastic sense of support and encouragement to all participating. Anyone experiencing events in their lives who are offered participation in Strategic Health Alliance programming are most wise to do so. The benefits are life enhancing!
