PRINCESS PAGEANT RULES •A ll contestants must be female, 13 to 17 years old and enrolled in high school or another educational institution. They must be single and have no children or spouse. • E ach contestant will be asked to perform one straight dance, present a speech on a topic of their choice, perform a talent of choice and sell 50/50 tickets beginning on Saturday, Aug. 1. •A ll contestants will be judged on a point system. There will be a total of 100 points possible from each judge, with outfit, dance, speech, talent and poise and appearance each worth 20 points. In addition, the 50/50 tickets sold will be calculated out of 100 points and pro-rated for each contestant to their equivalent amount of tickets sold. For example, if the least tickets sold equals 1,000 and the most tickets sold equals 5,000, then the contestant who sells the least tickets will get 20 points and the contestant who sells the most tickets will get 100 points. • The successful princess must return the crown. • The powwow committee will judge the pageant.

TANSI AND HELLO! My name is Kewhew Iskwek (Eagle Woman), but my given name is Lakeisha Marie Horseman Goodswimmer. I am 17 years old and I am Plains Cree from the Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation. I have been dancing for 10 years and the style I dance is fancy shawl. I love to dance because when I dance, I feel free. It is as if I am soaring through the sky. It’s the connection that is so powerful. When you hear that drum beat, you enter a higher version of yourself. You feel complete. It has been an honour representing as Miss Kamloopa for 2017-2018 and sharing my messages while representing this prestigious title and
travelling all over Turtle Island. I thank you all for your love and support. I would also like to thank the Kamloopa Pow Wow society and committee, Tk’emlúps te Secwepemc, the head staff and all the volunteers, dancers, drummers and spectators who make this amazing pow wow happen every year. DRUM RULES • All lead singers must register their drum and all of the singers with that drum. Any changes made once the drum registration form has been submitted to the secretaries will be considered as a singer(s) missing from roll call and points will be deducted accordingly. • There will be no late registration for drums. All drums must be registered before drum roll call at 11:45 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4. • No singers are allowed to register to more than one drum group and no drum hopping. If singers are caught, penalties will be given to that registered drum. • All singers must be present and ready to sing when called upon. Points will be given for drum roll call, intertribal and contest songs. During contest songs, all drums will be allowed four starts. During intertribal songs, all drums will be allowed five leads unless otherwise directed by head staff. • Drummers must keep drum area clean and no smoking is permitted.
• All drums must have a minimum of five singers per group prior to registration and set-up. • Intertribals will go in left to right drum rotation and contest will go in right to left drum rotation. • There are no drugs or alcohol allowed. If drummers are in possession or suspected to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, they will be disqualified. • Each drum will be judged on a point system beginning on Friday, Aug. 3, as follows: — Present at drum roll call (10 points for each Grand Entry, with one point deducted for each singer missing — Leads (five points, with each lead from a different singer being a point) — Starts singing when called upon (five points) — Singing (five points) — Drumming (five points) — Appropriate song (five points)

JUDGE RULES
• All contestants must be registered before the start of noon Grand Entry on Saturday, Aug. 4, and must be wearing the number issued to them (there will be no late registration of dancers).
• The arena director, whipman and head drum judges will choose judges for all competitions;
• All dance numbers must be visible to the judges and secretaries during the competitions, grand entries, exhibitions and spot checks.
• All decisions will be final. Judges cannot change ballots once they have been submitted to the head staff for tallying;
• All contestants must be in Grand Entry and enter with their category to receive points. The only exception is for dancers registered to the host drum(s), which those dancers must be dressed and are responsible for giving their numbers to the secretaries before grand entry.
• Be sure of the numbers, write down the numbers clearly and sign each ballot.
• All contestants must be in the exhibition and/or spot checks to receive points. There will be no exceptions. • Each contestant will be judged on skill, dress and dance ability. Judging will be strictly on a point system, beginning on Grand Entry Friday as follows: — First Grand Entry (75 points) — Second to fourth Grand Entry (50 points) — Spot Checks/Exhibitions (25 points) — First place (50 points)w — Second place (25 points) — Third place (15 points) — Fourth place (10 points) — Tiebreaker (one point)
• If a judge is caught judging a relative, their ballot will be considered invalid;
EAGLE WHISTLES AND EAGLE FEATHER PICK-UP • Four veterans will be called upon to do all feather pickups, with the only exception being for eagle bustles, fans or a full complete piece that has feathers on it; • No whistles are to be blown during competitions; • Anyone having blown a whistle shall report to the whipman or the arena director; • There will be no exceptions for fanning a drum.
• All contestants must be at least one-quarter native blood. Proof of tribal identification/status may be required. • Each contestant must be in full regalia during competitions, grand entries and exhibitions/ spot checks and be of the correct gender for that category; • If an eagle feather of a contestant’s regalia falls or is dropped during competition, he/she must disqualify himself/herself for that session and may be disqualified by the arena director or whipman if the dancer does not self-disqualify. • Each contestant can register in only one dance category, with the exception being specials. • There is zero tolerance for drugs or alcohol. If dancers are in possession or suspected to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, they will be disqualified from the contest.

ARENA DIRECTOR, WHIPMAN & HEAD DRUM JUDGE The three work closely with the masters of ceremonies to ensure the powwow runs smoothly. They make sure all contestants are organized during Grand Entry, competitions and exhibitions and that appropriate songs are chosen for each dance category. All judges and alternates
are chosen by the arena director, whipman and head drum judge for each session. The trio ensures all judges adhere to the rules. The arena director and whipman take care of the arena by making sure all children stay off the arena during competitions, specials, honour dances and ceremonial dances. They also take care of the dropped eagle feathers when they are on the arena, take care of the eagle whistles and line up the dancers in the Grand Entries. Arena Director: Dale Alexis, Alexis, Alta.
