Dearborn Ford is proud to support Royal Inland Hospital & community
Justin Grover, General Manager Longtime and newer Kamloops residents alike have surely noticed a real camaraderie in our community culture. When discussing some of the city’s local fundraising initiatives with relatives from out of town, there is a consistent “wow factor” associated with what Kamloopsians are able to achieve in their community fundraising efforts. Our charities are certainly blessed to be based in a city that truly supports its residents. From individuals to businesses, the culture of community in Kamloops is as strong as it has ever been. Kamloops can be seen coming together for myriad causes and those who have lived in the Tournament Capital for some time may assume such a giving spirit can be found in all other communities. However, as the website
GoFundMe confirmed in a December 2021 report, Kamloops is the most generous city in Canada, ranked No. 1 in the nation with the most donations to charitable causes per capita last year. Many readers may have seen the posts on social media reminding people that large online retailers like Amazon aren’t going to sponsor their daughter’s soccer team or donate thousands of pounds of food and thousands of dollars to the Kamloops Food Bank or raise funds for our local hospital. When we make the choice to support the local business community, we help empower them to continue supporting local initiatives we all value — and the community stands tall together. Dearborn general manager Justin Grover explains why his team continues to invest heavily in its community.
“It’s really not about the advertising or financial return on our investment when it comes to supporting our community” Grover said. “I have seen this dealership thrive because people in this community continually show up for us and support our business. I feel like we are indebted to the Kamloops community for everything they have done for us. A big part of what makes the Kamloops community awesome is the tireless giving and the ripple effect of one business giving back, which in turn encourages other companies to do the same. “When another local business donates their hard-earned time or resources, it’s not the amount that is important, but rather their commitment to our community that stands out. This is what makes me so proud to live and work in Kamloops,” Grover said.

It is with humility that we continue to strengthen our relationships with First Nation, Métis and Inuit peoples across the Interior. We are deeply grateful to the Indigenous communities in our region who graciously lent their support to the Together We Rise campaign and for those who have helped make our hospital a culturally diverse and inclusive place for all.

ROYAL INLAND HOSPITAL FOUNDATION
A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM THE TOGETHER WE RISE CAMPAIGN CHAIR
F
or over 40 years my family has called Kamloops home. Over those years, I have watched the city and surrounding communities grow and prosper. I have witnessed, with no small degree of awe, how residents have come together time and time again to support thousands of projects that have helped build a better home for all of us. Such is the story of the Royal Inland Hospital Foundation’s Together We Rise campaign. Frankly, the response has been overwhelming. As the new Phil and Jennie Gaglardi Tower rose, residents opened their wallets, giving what they could, to support the equipment needs in the impressive new facility. In doing so, we have all come together to improve healthcare for all, in the large Royal Inland Hospital
catchment area. I sincerely hope that you share my feelings of pride and accomplishment, and that you continue to support the efforts of the Together We Rise campaign and the Royal Inland Hospital Foundation. A sincere thank you to everyone who has donated, and continues to donate to the campaign. I would be embarrassingly remiss without also thanking each and every member of the Together We Rise Campaign Cabinet for their dedicated work, the team at Royal Inland Hospital Foundation, the leadership and staff of the hospital, and the support from Interior Health. As the fundraising efforts for our campaign continue – we aren’t finished yet, we have the new Teck Emergency Department, Pediatric Unit
Jim Reynolds, Together We Rise campaign Cabinet Chair
and Post-anesthetic Recovery Unit to look forward to. I feel a great sense of optimism toward the future and all that we can accomplish together. Together We Rise. Our time is now.

WELCOME TO THE PHIL & JENNIE GAGLARDI PATIENT CARE TOWER
T
he Royal Inland Hospital Foundation has proudly named this patient care tower the Phil and Jennie Gaglardi Tower to commemorate the generous donation of $15 million made to Royal Inland Hospital by the Gaglardi Family in honour of Phil and Jennie Gaglardi. Phil and Jennie were married in 1938 in Langley, B.C., where Jennie had started Christian Life Assembly Pentecostal Church. In 1944, they moved to Kamloops with their two children to minister the First Pentecostal Church at 159 Seymour Way, which they renovated and named Calvary Temple. Both ordained pastors and regular visitors at Royal Inland Hospital, Phil and Jennie dedicated themselves to the church and helping others who lived in the city they loved dearly. Jennie was especially committed to the health and well-being of children in the community and ran one of Canada's largest Sunday Schools. Phil, a former Mayor of Kamloops and longstanding

MLA, commuted from Victoria every weekend to lead church services. During their time in Kamloops and alongside other community leaders, they also played pivotal roles in the setup and operation of a non-profit organization providing senior citizens with affordable housing.
Influenced by the legacy of Phil and Jennie Gaglardi and their joy of helping others to build a stronger community, Royal Inland Hospital will always be grateful to the Gaglardi Family for their gift to enhance and support healthcare in Kamloops and the Thompson Cariboo Shuswap region.

n September of 2021, Shane and Andrea Doan showcased their commitment to healthcare in our region and love for Kamloops by generously donating to the RIH Foundation and lending their credibility as Honorary Chairs to the Together We Rise campaign in support of the new Phil and Jennie Gaglardi Tower and site renovations to the current hospital. Being Andrea’s hometown and the place where Shane’s hockey career began, Kamloops holds a special place in their hearts. Both Shane and Andrea have relied on the services of Royal Inland Hospital over the course of their lives. “During my junior hockey career and on a few occurrences throughout Andrea’s pregnancies, Royal Inland Hospital played an instrumental role in keeping us both healthy when we
were in need of medical attention,” says Shane Doan. Shane and Andrea have made this commitment to our hospital in hopes of inspiring others to contribute in their own way. Andrea Doan shares, “When it comes to our friends and family in Kamloops, it gives us peace of mind knowing that the people we love have access to the specialized care offered at RIH.” They believe that the new Phil and Jennie Gaglardi Tower is exactly what Kamloops needs to keep pace with the complex needs of our growing and ageing population and the demand for specialized, interdisciplinary care within the Thompson Cariboo Shuswap region. They are especially excited about the private patient rooms, each with stunning views of Kamloops and lots of natural light to promote comfort and

“The NICU staff at RIH are very honoured, proud and excited to have been given the gift of a new unit that will allow us to continue to provide the highest level of care and support to our most vulnerable patients and their families. Babies have been cared for in the current unit since the early 1980’s, at a time when babies were kept all together in a traditional nursery style setting, and kept separate from their families. The NICU care model has outgrown the older unit and we now have the ability to keep babies and their families together, which will have a huge impact on our community and surrounding areas.” – Ashley Watson, RIH NICU Clinical Practice Educator.

n 2021, friends, RIH staff and supporters of the RIH Foundation were presented with the unique opportunity to have their name engraved on a paving stone that would make-up part of a beautiful path outside of the main entrance of the Phil and Jennie Gaglardi Tower. Proceeds raised through this initiative directly supported the purchase of new equipment in the new tower and the current hospital.
