Halcyon Hot Springs can halt that winter chill TODD SULLIVAN

KAMLOOPS THIS WEEK

todd@kamloopsthisweek.com

If you’re looking for a day-trip destination that will help curb the chill that’s creeping into the air, you may want to look no further than Halcyon Hot Springs near Nakusp. It’s only a few hours away and it’ll be sure to raise your body temperature. “We have two hot spring pools,” guest services manager Rina Tjoa said. “One is very hot and one is not quite as hot.” How hot? You’re looking at 42 C (105 F) and 38 C (100 F) for those springs. Then there’s the cold plunge pool that hits the mercury at about 12 C (55 F). “So that one is really cold,” Tjoa said. Hot springs are great for relaxation and the minerals contained in the water ‚ including sodium, magnesium, calcium, strontium, and lithium — are believed by some to heal a variety of medical conditions. Lithium salts, for example, are sometimes used

in the treatment of bipolar disorder and major depression. A variety of activities are available to Halcyon guests in the winter months. There’s an ice skating rink in Nakusp and many

hills nearby for sledding. Snowshoe rentals are available at Halcyon Hot Springs if visitors want to explore the Jackrabbit Interpretive Trail. Nearby Summit Lake provides an excellent loca-

tion for ice fishing. If skiing is more your thing, Halcyon is right on the powder highway and you can also hit up crosscountry trails such as Paul Roulston Trail and Wensley Creek Trail.

For those looking to ski in ways a bit outside the norm, both heli-skiing and cat-skiing are available. The Nakusp Celebration of Light normally takes place in late November or early December.

Halcyon and the hot springs are open yearround, with a seasonal mineral swimming pool open from May until Thanksgiving. Beyond those wet wonders, there are accommodations available, a restaurant on site, a full service spa, a meeting place, a gym and a banquet room, so whatever you need from your getaway, Halcyon Hot Springs can probably provide it. And, while there is Wi-Fi, there is no cell service at the hot springs. Tjoa noted that, while some may not appreciate that disconnection, others embrace it. “They say it’s like helping them with a relaxing getaway,” she said. Which is exactly what you can expect from a visit to Halcyon Hot Springs — relaxation. Whether you’re looking to dip into the hot springs, enjoy a fantastic meal at The Kingfisher Restaurant or just spend a little time away from the winter blues, you’ll feel right at home. ROAD to ADVENTURE

Safety measures for winter driving Winter weather causes many people to retreat indoors until the spring thaw. However, for those who embrace the cooler temperatures or find that life must go on despite snow and ice, taking inventory of their vehicles is a must before the first snowflakes start to fall. Harvey Nelson, general manager at Argo Road Maintenance, breaks it down to three simple pieces of advice: Prepare yourself. Prepare your vehicle. Adjust your speed and drive for the conditions. Tire care is an especially important area of vehicle maintenance. The tire experts at Michelin say regular tires may be ineffective for winter driving. Summer tires are made from materials that are optimized for warm conditions. When the mercury drops, these same materials can harden, reducing their abil-

ity to grip the road. That lack of traction can be compounded by the presence of snow or ice. Even all-season tires, which are designed to be driven year-round, can be insufficient in severe weather conditions. Winter tires can help drivers safely navigate winter roadways. Bridgestone Tires says that having the right snow

tires matters when driving in winter weather conditions. It’s important to look for tires that can disperse water sufficiently and also grip the road. Snow tires are designed to remain softer and more flexible to conform to the road better in cold conditions. Some winter tires are even studded to provide better traction. And, don’t forget that

from Oct. 1 to April 30, winter tires must be used on the Coquihalla Highway and many other routes in B.C. Unfortunately, even the best winter tires cannot provide perfect traction on slippery roadways. That is why it is essential — in conjunction with the use of winter tires or snow chains — to modify driving techniques to navigate safely.

• Drive slowly: Slow down on winter roads. Allow a greater distance for stopping than for dry conditions. Slippery conditions can make it more challenging to stop and excessive speeds can make the situation worse. • Shift into low gear: On hills, rely on low gears to maximize traction to travel up and down hills. This can minimize skids or sliding.

• Get the vehicle a tuneup: In addition to tires, be sure the braking system, battery and other major components of the vehicle are in good working order. • Replace windshield wipers: Reduced visibility can compromise the safety of drivers and their passengers. Replace windshield wiper blades before winter arrives. Consider purchasing winterrated windshield blades. • Know how to recover from a skid: When skids occur on black ice or slush, drivers should take their feet off of the pedals and steer gently in the direction they want to go. As the vehicle regains traction, only then should the brakes or accelerator be applied. Winter weather requires making some vehicle modifications and drivers may want to alter the way they drive to be more safe on the road.

ROAD to ADVENTURE

Bundle up! It’s cold out there on the bike

T

he arrival of cooler temperatures means motorcycle enthusiasts should have a plan in place for their vehicles. Although fall sees many riders pack their bikes into the garage to wait out the winter, many others in the Kamloops region see no reason to quit the great outdoors just because colder weather is on the way. No matter which path riders take and when they take it, preparation is essential when riding motorcycles. Here are a few pointers for riders to consider once the leaves have started to change colours in the Thompson and surrounding areas: LAYER UP Layering clothing

Riders should exercise caution when taking motorcycles for a cruise in late autumn and early winter.

is a key component of riding a motorcycle in colder temperatures. Many people are not very active on the back of a bike, so they will not generate enough heat on their own. Layering clothing will take the bite out of frosty winds and any precipitation that happens to be falling. Layer clothing so

you will feel comfortable, maybe even a bit warm, when you are just standing around outdoors. A first layer of thermal or fleece is a good idea. Then layer other materials as needed for comfort. Just do not wear so many layers that your mobility is compromised. If layers are not keeping you

warm enough, invest in heated clothing. The outermost layer you wear should be weather- and windresistant. Wind chill can quickly sap your energy and cut your ride considerably. Leather clothing will fit the bill in most cases, but waterproof material also may be necessary at times.

LEAVES Leaves can be a significant hazard to riders in the fall. Damp leaves can make a slippery mess of roads, particularly on turns and curves. Avoid all piles of leaves, as you do not know what may be hiding beneath them. Consider wet leaves as dangerous as black ice because soggy leaves can be just as slippery. SALT AND SAND Road maintenance crews will use sand and salt to keep roads clear when snow and ice forms. Avoid riding on salty roads because the salt can corrode chrome and paint.

If you choose to do any winter riding, apply a coat of wax to all parts of the motorcycle before going for a ride. This will help protect it and enable any salt to be easily wiped off after riding.

es and animals may be on the move looking for food. The recent wildfires in the B.C. Interior may also push animals into more urban areas in search of a meal. Deer can be moved out of fields by hunters. A collision with a deer can damage a car, so imagine what the animals can do to motorcycle. Always use caution in rural areas, particularly at dawn and dusk.

STANDING WATER If it rains or snows lightly after an extended period of dryness, oils in the road can come to the surface, making roads quite slick. In addition, stay on the lookout for puddles and other standing water. While motorcycle tires are good for displacing water, they still can hydroplane. Stay focused when riding on wet surfaces. FORAGING ANIMALS One potential hazard riders may not consider is wildlife. Harvested crops reduce easy food sourc-

WINTERIZING If you choose to store your bike when the weather starts to get cold, remember to put a fuel stabilizer in the tank, fill the tank with gas and hook the battery up to a battery tender. This will ensure the bike is ready for the road when the temperatures warm up.

ICE IS NICE IN THE KAMLOOPS REGION

S

ome of the best lakes for ice fishing in B.C. are right here in our backyard. The Kamloops area is known for some of the best freshwater fishing in the world and lakes are stocked by the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC. When fishing in Kamloops, you can expect to catch mostly rainbow trout, eastern brook trout, kokanee, bull trout and even burbot. Many of the lakes are stocked with trout, including the Kamloops trout, which attracts anglers from around the world. There are more than 100 lakes within a one-hour drive of Kamloops. With so much freshwater around the Tournament Capital, you would have to be curious about the fishing. MONTE LAKE This lake is surrounded by Ponderosa pine and rolling grasslands. It’s well-stocked annually with approximately 25,000 triploid kokanee salmon and 15,000 blackwater rainbow trout. Monte is a short 35-minute drive southeast of Kamloops on Highway 97. The northwest end of the lake is popular for kokanee and for trout that work along the edges of the lake in shallower water.

trout that swim in the deeper water. Eastern brook trout are also stocked and tend to feed in the shallows. This lake has a reputation to grow fish fast thanks to the abundance of insects. WALLOPER LAKE In January, Walloper Lake is home to a family ice-fishing day hosted by the Kamloops and District Fish and Game Association and the Kamloops Fly Fishers Association. This lake is stocked with rainbow trout and it’s where many people learn to ice fish for their first time. Walloper is a 25-minute drive south of Kamloops on the Coquihalla Highway. HEFFLEY LAKE This lake is tucked in rolling, forested hills and features scenic bays. Bird watchers keep an eye out for eagles, osprey and hawks and falcons. Heffley is a 30-minute drive northeast of Kamloops on the way to Sun Peaks. — Tourism Kamloops

EDITH LAKE Edith Lake is a small gem nestled in the grassland hills just a 15-minute drive south of Kamloops on Highway 5A. Edith is stocked with Fraser Valley and Pennask rainbow

With her fishing rod close at hand — or, in this case, under foot — Denise Derkson of Kamloops uses a manual auger to drill through the Walloper Lake ice in hopes of landing a trout for dinner.

Coping with the dying daylight Daylight saving time comes to an end each fall, at a time when the hours of available sunlight already are beginning to decline. Some people are more accustomed to darkness than others. Norwegians, Swedes and people living in Alaska and the upper reaches of Canada near or above the Arctic Circle may go through a period when winters can be especially dark. For example, Barrow, Alaska, will endure a period of 67 days of darkness. Although much of the rest of North America doesn’t experience such profound periods of darkness, when the darkness of fall and winter arrives, it can be difficult to maintain a positive outlook. Borrowing some of the coping mechanisms relied on in northern latitudes can help many people to see the dark in a different light. • Be aware of SAD:

Seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, is defined by the Mayo Clinic as a type of depression that’s related to changes in seasons, beginning and ending at about the same times each year. Symptoms tend to start in the fall and continue into the winter, sapping energy and making a person feel

moody. As with other types of depression, SAD can get worse and lead to severe problems if left untreated. Light treatment, talk therapy and medication can help people who are susceptible to SAD. • Make daylight hours count: Spend time outdoors

while the sun is bright in the sky. Make an effort to switch your schedule if work interferes with getting outdoors, even if all that can be managed is an outdoor walk at lunch. Sit by a bright window and soak up rays whenever possible.

• Celebrate winter activities: Go skiing, snowboarding, outdoor ice skating, or snowshoeing. Look forward to winter for what can be done, rather than what can’t. • Socialize more often: Instead of holing up indoors alone, frequent the places that become indoor

gathering spots for locals. These can include coffee houses, breweries, restaurants or even a local church. Plan more social occasions with friends and families so everyone can collectively shoo away the winter blues. • Exercise more: Use the darker hours as an excuse to exercise more, be it at the gym or outside. The Mayo Clinic says exercise and other types of physical activity can relieve anxiety and depression, lifting an individual’s mood as a result. • Light a fire: Set the kindling ablaze in a fire pit, fireplace or wood-burning stove, or just light a handful of candles. Flames can be soothing and less harsh on the eyes than artificial light. Fall and winter darkness does not have to send a person into the doldrums if he or she embraces the right attitude

Sledding safely into winter with style Dashing through the snow in a onehorse open sleigh … Winter holidays are made all the more merry with the addition of some outdoor recreation. In the Kamloops area, there are numerous places that offer picture-perfect sledding conditions. Sleighs and sleds are par for the Christmas course, especially when a bounty of snow is in the forecast. Sledding has been part of snowy celebrations for ages. Sledding is a fun-filled activity, but it can be made an even better time, and a little safer, if revelers learn a little more about it. SLED STYLES Sleds come in many different styles, each with its own advantages. Sleds with metal blades will work like ice skates, balancing riders’ weight on two metal runners. These sleds can work well during icy conditions or with hard-packed snow. Toboggans can fit multiple people, which can increase the fun factor and downhill speeds. Saucer-style sleds are good for one or two people. Foam liners on some saucers can absorb shock for riders, making those downhill bumps a little easier on the backside. Keep in mind that sleds with steering mechanisms are easier to control, which can equate to safer sledding.

LAYER UP It is best to dress in layers when going sledding. Even if it seems warm at home, it may be colder and windier at the top of hills. Sweating when it’s cold out can increase a person’s risk for hypothermia. A person who works up a sweat and comes in contact with ambient air when taking a break will feel an immediate chill. This is called evaporative danger and can be remedied by dressing in layers and trying to stay dry. INVEST IN A HELMET Sledding requires the use of a helmet. At high speeds, a blow to the head can cause a concussion or worse. AFTER YOU Wait until some sledders have already gone downhill, allowing them to compact the snow, which should make for a smooth ride. Choose safe hills, such as those that are free of bare spots, holes, trees and obstructions, and do not end abruptly at a road. Hills with a long, flat areas at the end make for easy, safe stopping. SAFETY FIRST Put safety first when sledding. Sled during the day so visibility is better. Keep arms and legs on the sled and only sled feet-first. By keeping these guidelines in mind, sledders can make sure this popular winter activity is as safe as it is fun.

Fall is a fine time for a local tour of wineries

W

ine tasting is a fun and social experience for those who are just starting to drink wine — and for those who have been enjoying it for years. Those who are out and about touring and tasting are often there to learn about wine and enjoy a variety of different types of wines and wine styles. However, most are not wine connoisseurs. They are just interested in having fun and maybe learning a little bit as they go. There is a suggested method of wine tasting (whites before reds, dry before sweet, light body before full, young before old), but there are no strict rules to follow. Relax, enjoy and have fun –— after all, wine tasting is supposed to be a fun, interactive experience. Wine is a process of discovery. There are no prerequisites and no right or wrong opinions. All you need to do is have an open mind and let the experience guide your adventure. With that being said, if it’s your first time on a wine tour, it’s nice to have a little primer. Here are some useful tips for your first experience in wine touring and tasting: 1. KEEP AN OPEN MIND You may have tried an oaky chardonnay at your friend’s house and maybe you didn’t enjoy it.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that you don’t like chardonnay. Chardonnay is widely known as the “winemaker’s grape” as it takes well to a wide range of winemaking techniques. To put it simply, you can taste 10 chardonnays and they’re all going to be different. Give it a chance. For instance, some are 100 per cent oaked, while the chardonnay at Monte Creek Ranch Winery just east of Kamloops is aged half in stainless steel and half in oak, so it is not overly oaky, but you still receive some butteryness and lemon. 2. MEET, GREET AND ASK QUESTIONS Wine tours are a great way to learn about wine, but it’s also an opportunity to learn about the people behind the winery — staff, owners and the winemaker. For instance, is the winery family-owned and operated? How did they get into the wine industry? What’s their winemaker’s winemaking philosophy? Getting to know the people behind the business opens up new avenues you can consider when you visit other wineries. How do they differ? How are they the same? Wine tasting is not just about the wine, it’s about the people behind it and the experience. So, don’t be shy while on a wine

tasting, ask as many questions as you’d like. At Monte Creek, the team loves to chat. 3. BE ADVENTUROUS Not sure what wines to try? Never heard of a type of wine on the tasting bar menu? Ask the tasting bar associate. Those who work in wineries love to talk about their favourite wines, so why not ask them what they would recommend for you to try and even with what food they might suggest pairing it? If you don’t know whether you like sweet or dry wines, red or white wines, simply be open to their suggestions, even if you are unsure. You might stumble upon your next new favourite. Maybe they have varietals that are unique to their region that would be hard to come by elsewhere. 4. USE ALL OF YOUR SENSES Wine tasting is quite the sensory experience. Start by looking at the wine in your glass. Notice the colour, clarity and the viscosity. Next, smell the wine. See if there are any aromas in there that you recognize. Flowers? Fruits? Spices? Minerals? Earth? Anything is possible. When you sip the wine, swish it around in your mouth a bit before you swallow. Notice the sensations in your mouth.

If there’s a tingle at the tip of your tongue, the wine is a little (or a lot) sweet. If it tingles at the sides of your tongue, that’s acidity. Bitterness on the back of your tongue is tannin, which gives a drying sensation in the mouth like an over-steeped tea bag. If you feel heat at the back of your throat, that’s a sign of high alcohol. Is it smooth? How about fullbodied and voluptuous? Is it light and fruity? Every single wine is different, just like every person is different. You might taste one thing, while your friend picks up on something totally different. That’s completely normal. Just like a snowflake, no two sets of taste buds are alike. 5. DON’T JUDGE BY YOUR FIRST SIP Wine is a living thing and it changes when it blends to the heat of your body, the air temperature and the saliva in your mouth. That taste can be short and crisp or it can linger for a minute or more, continuing to unfold the flavour secrets of the wine before finally fading away. This is called the “finish.” A long, complex finish is an indicator of a highly concentrated wine. Try taking at least three small sips of each wine you try to really allow the wine to unfold on your palate.

6. HIRE A DRIVER There is nothing worse than having to argue over who has to be the designated driver. Having a DD is the responsible way to go; however, maybe you should consider hiring a driver or a tour guide to take you from winery to winery. That way, you can relax and have fun without worry. If there are wineries where you’re going, there is guaranteed to be a wine tour service. There are a handful of wonderful tour companies here in Kamloops, all of which offer unique experiences for their guests. 7. ASK AT THE WINERIES WHERE ELSE YOU SHOULD VISIT While you’re at the tasting bar, ask your tasting room associate if they would recommend any other destinations. Even wines produced in the same region can be completely different depending on the winemaker’s style. Tasting room associates may be able to recommend some other wineries in the area that would have wines to suit your taste buds. So, forget about all those stuffy rules you think you have to follow when you’re out on a wine tour. Just relax and open yourself up to new flavours and experiences. It’s a fabulous way to spend a day with family and friends.

ROAD to ADVENTURE

Gear up for your next road to adventure Wildlife recreationists in North America spend more than $150 billion per year on their activities. If you are on the road to outdoor adventure this fall, here are some essentials to consider: • Binoculars: Scoping out territory and looking for game is often part of the hunt. A set of durable new binoculars can give hunters an edge. • Heated shoe insoles: Hunting and fishing often require long

wait periods, sometimes in chilly weather. Heated shoe insoles and hand warmers can keep outdoorsmen warm. • GPS/digital watch: Although many smartphones tell time and offer GPS services, lightweight watches may be more convenient than phones as they can be waterproof and offer such functions as GPS, an altimeter, a barometer and a digital compass. • All-season tent: Camping

out is not just a summer activity. A tent that is rated to withstand various temperatures and conditions is an asset. • Waders: Anglers sometimes need to get up close and personal with their prey. A sturdy pair of breathable waders is ideal for those who venture out of the boat or off the bank. • Wool socks: They may be a basic item, but hikers, hunters and other sports people can’t

stock up enough on warm, sweatwicking wool socks that will keep their feet comfortable and dry on all excursions. • Folding knife: Knives are ideal for cutting fishing line, twigs for a campfire and much more. A sturdy, quality knife that fits easily in a pocket or backpack is a must-have for hunters, campers and anglers. • Water-resistant pouch: A day on the boat or near the water

requires gear that can get wet without soiling items stored inside. Choose a pouch that can fit a camera, keys, phone and other necessities. • Climbing stand: Hunters frequently spend time up in the trees to get a better view of oncoming game. Stationary tree stands may remain for the season, but lightweight offerings fold and can be transported from area to area.
