In addition to great atmosphere, the Crystal offers their guests prompt and friendly service as well as prime food and drink.
Owners Mike and Deb Hallin have lived in Mora for a long time and have built longstanding relationships with many people in the area. Deb grew up in Mora and graduated from Mora High School and Mike has been here for 40 years. Over the years they have become familiar faces for many. Because they thought it would be fun, Mike and Deb bought the Crystal over a year ago from Mike’s brother, who was looking to sell the business. “The business has been very good to us,” Mike said. “ I bought the business because I thought I would like it. Turns out I love it. I’ve learned a lot in a short time and I’ve created

The Crystal Bar and Grill has seen many changes over the years including three expansions. Along with these expansions the Crystal Bar and Grill has added to their dining facility.
Mike said their efforts to make the restaurant more family friendly by separating the bar from the dining area has been successful and that they have seen an increase in visits from families. So for familiar faces, fun times and great weekly specials, visit your friends at the Crystal Bar and Grill.

• Hardware • Pet • Auto • Clothing • Farm • Sporting • Lawn & Garden • FleetGo – Everything You Need On The Go® Mora FleetGo, located at the intersection of Hwy. 65 and 23, is the area’s one-stop shopping place with their unique concept of combining gas and a convenience store with a hardware store, a farm and home store and bait and tackle store. The current owners purchased the store from Peoples National Bank of Mora after the previous owner went out of business in 1989. In 1998 the name was changed to FleetGo “Everything You Need On The Go...®” to better describe their new concept of one-stop shopping; like their slogan says, “Big Enough To Serve, Small Enough To Be Convenient®”.
Regular customers already know how much time they can save by making a stop at FleetGo. The store’s aisles have something for just
about everyone and because of the expanded inventory and over 25,000 items there’s little reason to stop anywhere else. Whether you’re an outdoors person, farmer or a handyman working on a weekend project, FleetGo probably has what you need. The store sells live bait, fishing and tackle equipment as well as hip boots, hunting and archery supplies and life jackets. They also have aisles of plumbing, electrical, automotive and paint supplies. There’s feed for birds, pets and livestock - bird feeders and stock tanks, gardening supplies, rope and chain, boots and outdoor clothing – even mailboxes, furnace filters and charcoal for your grill. In addition to the shelves full of merchandise, there’s an area in the front of the store where customers can sit down and have

FleetGo prides itself on serving the local community and offering the personal attention and service that’s hard to find in larger cities.

ne of the top criteria people look for when choosing a realtor is experience, especially in today’s market, and Kanabec County’s newest real estate office features two of the area’s most experienced realtors backed by the professionalism and resources of one of the best known companies in the industry. Dick Schultz and Karen Faust are familiar names to area residents. Both have 20 years of real estate experience. They recently joined forces with Coldewell Banker Pro IV in Rush City to establish a Mora office located in the mini mall on Main Street. “We chose to be part of the Coldwell Banker franchise because of the professionalism and services that they’re known for,” Karen shared, adding that Coldwell Banker, which has been in business for 106 years, strives to provide their agents with cutting edge technology resources and ongoing education. “We felt they have the most to offer our clients,” she stated. Some of those new technologies and resources provided by the Coldwell Banker franchise include posting listings on Internet social media and websites to increase exposure, using e-mail to quickly provide sellers with feedback after showings and to provide agents with timely updates regarding changes to regulations and laws.
Welcome new agent: Denise Akkerman Coldwell Banker is welcoming a new agent to their team: Denise Akkerman. The mother of three and grandmother of four has been living in the area for over 30 years. You might know her as your friendly waitress at the Crystal Bar and Grill, as your representative on the Mora City Council, or as the woman with the extraordinary garden in the annual Art and Garden tour. Denise said she chose to work with Coldwell Banker because their support, education and other opportunities seemed like the best fit for her. With her excellent listening skills, as a Coldwell Banker agent Denise intends to pay it forward by working hard to find the best fit for her clients. Call Denise at 320-223-0536.
Coldwell Banker Pro IV Agents:
“Not only are our listings promoted locally but they also get the added direct exposure to the Rush City office and their clients,” Dick pointed out. “We feel that by joining Coldwell Banker Pro IV in Rush City we can provide a strong service to a wide market area between the two offices. This is a huge advantage to our clients.” Karen and Dick also have the support and teamwork of the nine other Coldwell Banker Pro IV agents housed in the Rush City office, all of whom have the same commitment to helping bring buyers and sellers together, and they can tap into Coldwell Banker’s national network as well.
Dick Schultz, Karen Faust, Denise Akkerman, Jane Wiener, Dave Chmiel, Autumn Mattson, Brian Whitte, Clare Lillis, Kathy Lillis, Jeremy Ellingson, Jill Bolejack
In addition to a wealth of resources and experience, Karen and Dick also place an emphasis on customer service. “Every transaction is independent and individual for us,” Karen stressed adding that she pays no attention to what her sales statistics are. “I don’t really care about that. I care about the customer getting what they need.” This dedication to putting the customers first and going the extra mile has earned Karen and Dick a following of satisfied customers who come back to them for additional real estate needs and who also refer friends and family. “The majority of our business is from repeat customers. We think that says a lot,” Dick stated. All Coldwell Banker Pro IV agents offer expertise in foreclosures and short sale properties. Not only does Coldwell Banker Pro IV offer counsel to home sellers and buyers, but also offers connections to home inspectors, mortgage companies and water and septic inspection. All Coldwell Banker offices are independently owned and operated. Office hours at the Rush City office are Monday through Friday from 8:30 to 5:00 and Saturdays from 9:00 to 1:00. Office hours for Dick and Karen are Monday through Friday from 9:00 to 5:00 and Saturdays from 9:00 to noon. Office Manager, Beth Chmiel is also available to help, and Dick and Karen are available after hours on their cell phones.

Advocacy Advice & Assistance to Develop a Plan to Maintain Independence
Family Pathways Senior Services supports seniors 60 years of age or older and their caregivers with non-medical services designed to help them maintain their independence in the community for as long as possible. Senior Services Manager Anne Treadwell said many people are familiar with the challenges faced by hungry children, individuals and families struggling to make ends meet, as well as the need for youth to build social skills and friendships - but the growing issues facing seniors are often left in the shadows. Family Pathways Senior Services brings those issues out of the shadows and connects volunteers to service in companionship, advocacy and education, and social respite (called Gatherings). Family Pathways recruits and trains trusted volunteers to help older adults maintain their independent living status and ease isolation and loneliness. Coordinated social gatherings provide a break for fulltime caregivers of seniors suffering from memory loss and chronic illness while participants enjoy safe social activities and a nutritional meal. According to Val Palmer, Senior Services Coordinator in the Mora office, this type of volunteering doesn’t need to take a lot of time—it’s the sort of thing you would do for your own family members by calling to check up on them once a week or to make sure their needs are being met. In other words, it’s just like being a good neighbor. Family Pathways is looking for those neighbors who are willing and able to volunteer. Seniors need volunteers that are friendly, reliable and enjoy helping others. Volunteering can mean offering just one or two hours a week to share a meal, assist with grocery shopping, play cards or reminisce over a cup of coffee.
Serving Kanabec, Pine, Isanti & Chisago Counties
Volunteers Needed
Family Pathways Senior Services needs friendly, reliable and trustworthy volunteers. All volunteers receive individual and group training. Volunteers help older adults maintain their independent living status. Please give us a call.
Examples of Client Needs: • 81-yr-old man would like someone to play cards with and go out for a burger sometimes. • 82-yr-old woman would enjoy a visitor that would take her out for coffee, to the library & maybe shopping once in awhile. • 98-yr-old woman would like to get out for coffee & have someone assist her at the grocery store. • 77-yr-old woman would enjoy having someone to walk with & possibly go to Senior Dining.
Volunteers are the heart of senior services!

Mora Area Farmers’ Market Promotes Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food The Mora Area Farmers’ Market is in its second year of supplying the community with fresh garden produce, homemade gifts, woodcrafts, canned and baked goods and so much more. This year, the vendor list has grown to 12 and the variety has increased as well. Lynn Vagle, market manager of the farmers’ market said, “The outpouring of customers and families looking to feed their families locally grown and produced food has been greater than we ever predicted. The market has been embraced by everyone in the community and the feedback for next year’s growing season has been great. The local farmers have been happy to have an outlet for their products that is within driving distance for locals and the inquisitive people we have met from other parts of the state, passing through Mora, has been phenomenal to our market and our repeat business. Every Saturday, you get to meet your farmer and pick up your food - no middleman collecting extra from your pocket or tacking on shipping fees.” Questions from customers have arisen about gardening and what it means to be organic. Several times throughout the growing season, members of the U of M Master Gardeners’ group set up a table to answer questions. While none of the current vendors are “certified” organic, all of the produce growers practice sustainable agriculture. This means they use no chemicals, herbicides or fertilizers other than manure. For those that produce meat products and eggs, they use no antibiotics or growth hormones. Biological farming is the new buzz word in agriculture that focuses on the health of the soil and the plants to produce a better fruit or vegetable. All of the produce market members practice some form of biological farming, whether it be composting, mineral supplements or crop rotation. Customers ask the local growers if organic is worth the extra money. As was published in a recent study in the Annals of Internal Medicine, eating organic produce does not provide any more vitamins or minerals than conventionally grown produce. However, the reduction in pesticide residue contamination is 30 percent less than conventionally-grown produce. Also the carbon footprint is significantly reduced by buying local. Local seasonal fruits, veggies, and eggs may taste better because local crops are harvested when they are the freshest, and they make it to the consumers sooner. This ensures that you are feeding your family the freshest food and reducing the middlemen that may re-distribute or warehouse it before it hits a sales shelf. Vagle is one that has her own stand called Birds & Bees Farm and lists her product line as “Jam I Am....”. So far she has made 58 flavors of different jams, jellies, preserves and conserves, a few of them as unusual as root beer jelly or orange-horseradish jam.
She has a line of “hot” jams made with hot peppers from her own gardens. Lynn Carlson of Lynn’s Glass & Garden, is another weekly vendor that sells stained glass, preserves and other hand-made crafts. Carlson said she also offers stained glass classes and can produce custom work too. When making her windchimes, she started out with traditional stained glass with lead and copper foil, but then transitioned into fused glass that she creates using a glass kiln. If you are looking for sauerkraut or relishes, she is the red trailer booth. Fresh garden produce and flowers are in abundance at Faye Carroll’s Rivermist Farm booth. This past summer Carroll said berries have been selling very well. Carroll has a little bit of everything and looks at the overall Mora market as having a large variety comparable to the other markets in the area. What separates the Mora market from the other local venues is that everything is locally produced and processed. Mike and Val Prax with M & V Crafts said they are seeing more and more repeat customers. “We are seeing some of the same faces from last year,” said Val. “One of the rules of the farmers’ market is that everything is custom made by the vendors. We work very hard to create new things that will entice them to buy local and one of a kind.” This season, Mike and Val invested in the technology to be able to accept credit card swipes for their products, which has also led to higher sales with many customers not having cash in their pockets. Dick Nelson, with American Diamond Willow, makes hand-finished walking canes and trail sticks. According to Nelson, he digs the roots and sticks out of the swamp himself. Every cane is made without artificial pieces and no two are alike. His business has grown large enough that he set up shop in downtown Mora to display his creations and has increased his product line to kitchen utensils, fishing poles and golf clubs. Comfort Community Foods represents the local Amish community and they have been a big draw for the market this year as they become more established in our area. Joas Bontrager commented that the Mora market is the largest and busiest of the markets they set up for sales. They are very pleased at the weekly turnout of both repeat and new customers and have been able to expand their produce and baked good lines immensely this season. Customers can also order grass-fed chickens and turkeys from them at their booth. If you are looking for fresh produce stop by Vang Market or Blue Star Garden or Northern Star Farm. For handcrafted jewelry and personal gifts, you can stop in at Jewelry FX. The market also has part-time vendors: Akkerman Apples and Ron Kellerman Wild Rice or Paula Jehlicka Garden Art. There is something for everyone at our market!

Like all Mora Chevrolet Buick service staff, he is a certified GM mechanic and certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence.
Tom Cleveland Service Manager at Mora Chevrolet Buick, Tom has 23 years of experience in the automotive service industry. He will work with you to iron out the warranty details, cost and customer satisfaction. Tom said he was drawn to Mora by its friendly feel and small town feel. “You get to know your customers here by name, not just a number,” he said. “It’s easier and better at Mora Chevrolet. The community knows us, our technicians and we know their expectations and if we don’t fix it right, you know we’re going to hear about it at the grocery store or at church.”
Tim Thompson When you see that pesky “check engine soon” image light up on your dash, bring your vehicle in to Tim, a drivability specialist. Tim has 26 years of General Motors experience, 18 of those at Mora Chevrolet Buick. Tim is particularly skilled at communicating with your vehicle’s technology to find out exactly why that little orange light came on. “You bring a car in that has a drivability, shifting or any other issue, we’ll fix it as fast and efficiently as we can,” he said.
Mike Peterson With 25 years of experience, three at Mora Chevrolet Buick, his customers have begun to recognize his good work and request him at the shop. When Mike says he works on all makes and models, he really means ALL makes and models. One customer recently brought in his International Harvester tractor for a repair. “That’s the reason people come here,” he said. “They trust that we’re going to be fair and fix it right. Two words sum it up: trust and honesty.”
Jake Kaminsky Jake is his name and oil is his game. A Mora resident, Jake has been working with Mora Chevrolet Buick as a lubricant specialist for two years. Jake said the best thing about bringing your vehicle to Mora Chevrolet Buick is the high quality work you will receive with specialized tools and extensive training. “You get what you pay for when you bring your car to a dealership. You’re going to get a higher quality repair,” said Jake. “Customers often come to us after they brought their car to another shop and it didn’t get fixed.” said Jake.
Walt Schwartz With 37 years of experience, Walt has your vehicle covered bumper to bumper. “You never know what you’re going to be working on back there,” he said. From tuneups to transmission overhauls, and everything in between, he has the know how to get it done. “We always try to be up-front and honest with the customers. That’s a big thing in this industry and we work to earn their trust,” said Walt.
Charlie Ilstrup If your vehicle is making a strange noise you can’t quite put your finger on, Charlie is on the job. With 35 years of experience, 17 years at Mora Chevrolet Buick, Charlie is a suspension, brake and alignment specialist with a highly-trained ear to pick out all those little squeaks and hums. If he can’t fix it, nobody can. “If that is the case,” he joked, “I’ll at least teach you how to turn up the radio and tune it out.”“I have confidence in the guys I work with, and what they do,” said Charlie. “We know how the customers feel, and if we make a mistake they can trust that we will correct it.”

ONLINE AUCTIONS
Mora, MN
Independent Affiliate of K-BID Online Auction Site
www.K-Bid.com Look for Five Star Auctions Five Star Auto Sales in Mora became an affiliate of K-Bid online auctions this past February when the owners began to get requests from their clients to sell their items. Today, there are 136,000 registered bidders. “There’s a distinct advantage to online auctions and that is there is an unlimited number of people who can see and bid on your items,” said Auction Manager Matt Berry.
Matt Berry Auction Manager
Matt said they have many bidders registered within Duane Helmbreckt Minnesota and the surrounding states, but have sold Auto Sales General Manager to buyers as far away as Connecticut, Kentucky and Canada. Sellers can either bring their items to Five Star Auctions for safe storage or items can be stored at their property until they are sold. Matt works with sellers to take photos, develop accurate product descriptions, uploads items to the online auction and advertise for the auctions to ensure the maximum number of bidders view the items. You can be sure that Matt is working for you. He said that the staff at Five Star Auto Sales has learned what sort of items and what kind of descriptions encourage sales on K-Bid. If Matt thinks an item won’t do well at the auction simply because the environment isn’t right or if it could be sold for more in a different format, he is the type to say so. That type of honesty is what makes his customers loyal. “Our job is to make sure people see your items,” said Matt. “We work hard to be honest and up-front with our clients. We want customers to get more money than they expect, that way everybody’s happy.” And after an item sells at auction, the seller can expect to receive their check within two weeks of the auction closing date. The folks over at Five Star Auto Sales have sold items such as: Snowmobiles, Motorcycles, Lawn/Garden, ATVs, Boats, Trailers, Vehicles, Collectibles, Antiques, Coins, Jewelry and Real Estate.

Kenneth Smith Smith Taxidermy Taxidermy HIGH QUALIT Y DETAILED
DEER FISH TS ANTLER MOUN
K
en Smith always had an interest in taxidermy. In school it seemed he really had a knack for it. When he grew up he made a career for himself in the construction business that came to an abrupt end when a tragic accident left Ken looking for fulfilling work he could perform from his wheelchair.
lose or switch capes in the process, Ken completes the full tanning process in his shop so you are guaranteed your animal’s exact cape used in your mount. Ken will also score your rack and has a record of accuracy within 1/2-1 inch.
It was then that Ken opened Kenneth Smith Taxidermy, specializing in deer, fish and custom leather-covered antler mounts. Today, Ken has over 20 years of experience in providing high quality taxidermy with a very reasonable turnaround.
Ken Smith gives each of his customers’ mounts the same amount of care and diligence he would on his own mounts. “I don’t have any customers that leave unhappy,” he said. “I want their deer to look how I would want mine to look. With the amount of repeat customers I have I think it speaks for itself.”
Every part of the taxidermy process is done, start to finish, in Ken’s shop 17 miles north of Mora. A trip and investment well worth the drive. Unlike many other taxidermists that send hides off to giant commercial tanning operations that can
Unsure of if you want it mounted? First thing to do is get your animal in the freezer to keep it in good condition while you make your decision. Then, come by and check out Ken’s showroom to see for yourself the stunning quality provided by his careful hand.

Soderstrom Realty J
udy Soderstrom never stops moving. She graduated from Mora High School in 1960, and has worked in real estate since 1981, opening her own real estate company in 1990. From 2003-2006 she served as the Minnesota State Representative for District 8B representiing all of Kanabec County and parts of Isanti and Pine counties. This past April, Judy celebrated her 70th birthday and she’s not slowing down. Today she works full time from her home office in her and her husband’s gorgeous century-old home (formerly owned by her aunt and uncle, the Zetterbergs) located on the corner of Highway 65 and East Forest Avenue. Judy said there was something about looking at houses she has always loved. All it took to spark her real estate career was an ad by Timberland Realty in the Kanabec County Times looking for new agents. Judy’s local roots and service history means she truly knows the area and its people. As a
matter of fact, if you are from the area and you stop by to visit, you’ll likely find someone you know in common. “I’ve been selling properties to people I’ve known all my life. It’s fun to work with people you’ve known for a long time,” Judy said. While the market has seen many changes, Judy has maintained her high level of service to her clients and neighbors by keeping abreast of policies and education about foreclosed and short sale properties. She said right now, “it’s a buyer’s market.”

Chiropractic Clinic a n e r d a Treatment for Every C l a u d i v i d n I l a n o i s s Age Profe The Vaagenes Chiropractic Center is your number one stop for wellness. Here we treat more than just neck and back injuries. We treat injuries from auto accidents, workers’ comp, provide adjustments, realignments, improve muscle balance and will treat creaking knees or popping ankles. Dr. Timothy Vaagenes opened the Chiropractic Center in Mora two years ago after his patient base in Mora grew and patients began to carpool to his practice in Shoreview. This dedication and willing to drive so far demonstrates the loyalty his patients have for his care—and for good reason. Dr. Vaagenes graduated from the Northwestern College of Chiropractic after four years of undergraduate coursework and five years of chiropractic education. Dr. Vaagenes is also certified by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners, the principal testing agency for the chiropractic profession. Dr. Vaagenes will work with patients to determine the treatment plan that works best for them, whether it is a one time realignment or a series of adjustments and exercises to compliment your wellness plan. For over 20 years Dr. Vaagenes has been practicing chiropractic care, during which he has treated patients of all ages from newborn babies no more than a few hours old, to adults over 100 years of age. Spinal alignments can be very beneficial to new mothers and their babies. The birthing process can put a lot of stress on both the mother and the baby. “Think of birth,” said Dr. Vaagenes. “As a baby is being born the doctor is pulling on the babies head and neck, sometimes with as much as 75 pounds of force.” This can cause stress and misalignment at the top of the spine. Gentle adjustments soon after birth or as they grow can help babies who are colicky, overly fussy or suffer from ear infections. This is because misalignment in the spine can put pressure on the nerves that connect to all of your body’s functions affecting overall health.
Dr. Timothy Vaagenes
20+ Years of Health Care Knowledge and Experience
Birth can be equally traumatic for the mother. During pregnancy and birth hormones are released which loosen the ligaments of the body helping the pelvis and other parts of the body to expand and accommodate a growing child. After pregnancy, Dr. Vaagenes said sometimes hips and parts of the spine need a little help getting back into place. Vaagenes Chiropractic Center also offers nutritional consultations to compliment your healthy lifestyle. They offer help such as simple nutritional suggestions, blood work interpretaton, body cleansing, weight loss plans and food sensitivity testing to list just a few. Stop by or call Vaagenes Chiropractic Clinics for a free consultation to see if chiropractic care is right for you.

Anytime Fitness has a wonderful reputation as a safe place where you can exercise on your own time, anytime. It’s because of their wonderful facilities and service that Pam and John Haase decided to open the Mora Anytime Fitness in 2008, and membership has been growing ever since.
improvements Pam has seen have been during her instruction of the SilverSneakers program. She claimed women 65 and over have come to her boasting how their bone density has increased through the exercise. Others have experienced less aching joints, greater ease getting in and out of chairs and better fitting clothes.
“I always thought it would be fun to own a fitness club,” said Pam Haase. The best thing about owning the club is being able to help people, she said.
Pam said she has seen several clients lose more than 100 pounds at the club. These types of stories of success bring joy to her work and has motivated her family to expand the business. In spring of 2010 Pam, John and their son and daughterin-law, Bob and Stephanie Haase, opened Anytime Fitness franchises in Cambridge, Isanti and North Branch. In fall of 2011
The Healthways SilverSneakers Fitness Program at the Mora branch has grown to include 200 participants and for a good reason. Some of the best physical

Fresh & Smoked Meats • Deli • Jerky • Beef Sticks
A T E S M L K & R RETAI We Have MORE than Just Our Fresh Meats! K&R Retail Meats in Mora is a new establishment based on old time butcher shop values where you can trust the butchers’ expertise and trust that your cuts of meat will be the best they can provide. Owners Ken Bergstadt and Richard Grummons take pride in their selection offering steaks, jerky, beef sticks, bacon, and much more. Ken knows the animals he butchers from hoof to head and has the knowledge and skill to expertly carve up a whole quarter of beef, unlike other meat retailers the purchase their meats prepackaged and wrapped injected with gases and solutions to make the meat appear fresher or taste better. “They do a lot of strange things to that meat to make it last,” Ken said. Ken, on the other hand, prefers his meat unadulterated and relies on the true quality of the animal to please his customers. Ken and Richard only sell the best meats available and are proud of the fact
they only sell USDA choice beef, never lower grades. The fact is, Ken said, the poorer the quality of the beef the less tender and juicy it is when it is prepared—and tough and dry just won’t do. Ken and Richard take great pride not only in their quality, but also in their sections of meats. It only takes one look at the many rows and varieties of bratwursts in the case to see you will never be bored at your cookout. At K&R business is a family affair. Sara Grummons (Richard’s daughter), Alyssa Bergstadt (Ken’s daughter) and April Reichel and her father Danny Reichel also work at the store. Together they prepare cold salads made fresh from scratch based on grandmother’s recipe, party trays and homemade fried chicken for sale at their full service deli counter.
