VIOLA M. NORDEEN Viola May Nordeen of Rush City, formerly of Braham, died on Monday, Jan. 13, 2014 at the Golden Living Center in Rush City. A long-time breast cancer survivor, she was 91 years old. She was lovingly known as May and was born on May 6, 1922 in Chicago, Ill. to parents, Harry and Elizabeth (Speed) Gibson. She attended school in Chicago, graduating in 1940. After high school she lived in Crete, Ill. for a few years before joining the U.S. Navy. After her discharge in November of 1945 she returned to Crete where she started her own beauty shop. She was proud of her military service and was a member of the Cambridge American Legion. In 1972 she was united in marriage to Laurel “Chip” Nordeen in Rush Point, Minn. They lived on the family farm north of Braham. She worked as a beautician at the beauty salon in Braham until it closed and then worked as a beautician at Park Manor for many years. She also worked in Mora at Amoco in the plastic department, at Sheller Globe, the Inn in Hinckley and Walmart. She was a volunteer driver transporting people to and from medical appointments for a number of years. In the mid80s she thought there was a need for a thrift store in Braham with the proceeds from sales going

to support the community. She worked endlessly to see it come to fruition. She solicited various organizations for start-up funds and went to the pastors asking for help finding volunteers to work at the store. In July of 1989 her dream came true. Tusen Tack opened in a little store on the main street which they outgrew in a short time. She then approached the bank about a loan to purchase the vacant grocery store on the main street. When she applied for the loan the bankers told her a man would have to co-sign the loan, so she found one who evidently also believed in the project and was willing to be a co-signer. She was especially proud of the role she played in bringing Tusen Tack to Braham and volunteered there as long as her health permitted. She loved to spend time outdoors; especially fishing with her husband. She was a very good cook and enjoyed preparing meals for family and friends, a talented seamstress and late in life took a class in painting and completed many beautiful pictures. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Chip; brothers, Ed and Harry; sister, Katherine; brothers and sisters-in-law, John Nordeen, Evelyn Johnson, Kermit Nordeen, Marjorie House, Merle Nordeen and Phyllis Lammi. She is survived by special niece, Georgie Anne Stephanson of Anaheim, Calif., brothersin-law, Jim (Carole) Nordeen of Cambridge and Duane Nordeen of Chicago; sisters-in-law, Elaine (Jerry) Stoeckel of Minneapolis and Frances Nordeen of Braham; several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. A graveside service and burial will take place in the spring. Arrangements are by the RockIngebrand Funeral Home of Braham. Condolences may be posted at www.aifuneralhome.com.

The Super Bowl is coming to New Jersey! BY GEORGE DICKIE
MetLife Stadium, the site of Super Bowl XLVIII, has everything the NFL wants in a venue, with one exception: climate control. The NY/NJ Super Bowl Committee is proudly promoting the Feb. 2 NFL title game as the first outdoor, cold weather Super Bowl. MetLife Stadium, which opened in 2010 and is home to both the New York Giants and New York Jets, has everything but a roof. In terms of capacity it can put more than 82,000 fans in seats. That’s more than any other NFL stadium and is second only to Washington’s FedEx Field, that with standing room, can hold 85,000 football fans. MetLife Stadium has more than 10,000 club seats and 218 luxury suites. It was built with numerous “green” initiatives involving everything from water conservation to nearby wetland protection. Transportation to the venue is as simple as it gets. Fans from New York City and surrounding suburbs in New York and New Jersey (and even Connecticut) can hop on either the New Jersey Turnpike or choose between train and bus options. But once they get there, at least in February, they’d better be prepared for cold weather. Or, should they? Average temperatures for East Rutherford, New Jersey in early February hover around 40 degrees for a high and 24 degrees for a low. That’s not bad football weather by any means. Like anywhere else, however, there are extremes of both warmer and colder temperatures. The former Giants Stadium, which existed next door to MetLife, was known for high winds, and in the Northeast in February, anything is possible when it comes to snowfall. Imagine a big nor’easter bearing down on the East Coast around kickoff time. The NFL, and especially Commissioner Roger Goodell, rolled the dice when they awarded MetLife Stadium Super Bowl XLVIII. The New York Metro area is steeped in football history and the city is an obvious attraction for all the formalities surrounding the big game. Other than a domed stadium, it’s the perfect venue for all the fanfare surrounding the Super Bowl, even if it’s not in a warmer climate. The NFL, meanwhile, will keep their fingers crossed that Mother Nature cooperates. And what if she doesn’t? Most agree that the season’s biggest game should be played on a neutral field with no adverse conditions. But then again, as Northeast natives know, it wouldn’t surprise anyone to see another Ice Bowl such as what took place in Green Bay in 1967, or in more recent memory, the 2001 Snow Bowl, which was highlighted by Tom Brady’s famous tuck rule play. Those were playoff games, but with the Super Bowl in MetLife Stadium, in February, a similar weather event could make sports history. Super Bowl 48 is now set. The 2014 Super Bowl will match the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks. The Broncos are headed to the Super Bowl after beating the New England Patriots to win the AFC, while the Seahawks are moving on after taking care of business against the San Francisco 49ers to win the NFC. This year’s Super Bowl will be held at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday, Feb. 2. FOX will have the broadcast of the game, which is set to kick off at 5:30 p.m. CT.
