Mora students artwork on display at the Hopkins Center For the Arts
Community members help kick off ‘I Love to Read’ month
Artwork featured above by second graders Iris Eaton and Kailey Soderlund is on display at the Hopkins Center For the Arts during the month of March, a traditional month to highlight the art education programs in our schools throughout the state. Iris and Kailey created a block print “View From the Window” showing the cat looking in and the fish looking out from their fish bowl during Judy Broekemeier’s second-grade art class at Fairview. Additionally, Mora High School eighth-grader Austin Voss, has his “Studies in One and Two Point Perspective” in the show. He added unique and creative features to his drawings according to his junior high art teacher, Deb Huberty. The students artwork will be on display through March during the Centers regular hours.
February was “I Love to Read” month at Fairview Elementary. To celebrate this year’s theme, “Super Heroes, Super Readers,” Fairview students were treated to a Parade of Heroes as a part of the month’s opening ceremonies. Local police officers, EMTs, doctors, public librarians, high school students, soldiers, firefighters, and teachers all paraded into the Fairview cafeteria to deliver the message that reading is the one true super power in our world. Students were thrilled to see these real-life heroes up close and spent the month working hard to develop their own reading power.
Mork ranked 13th in German competition Let us congratulate Anna Mork, for performing at a level above and beyond most German students in the nation. Why, you ask? Here is the story: This winter, 18 Mora High School students participated in a National German Exam. This is the first time that Mora students have participated in the NGE since Amanda Stenberg began as a German teacher at the High School in 2005. Mrs. Stenberg invited the students who consistently worked hard in class and at home to participate in the exam. Those that agreed to take the challenging exam spent part of their school day on Dec. 12 taking the online test, which included reading and listening in German. The Mora students performed quite well, especially considering it was their first year participating. Anna Mork tested well enough to be invited to Minneapolis to participate in an interview on March 7. Currently, she is ranked 13th within the state of all German 2 students who participated in the exam. She is eligible to compete for a scholarship to visit Germany during the summer to continue to work on her communication and cultural skills. In addition to Anna’s achievement, several other students performed quite well. Laura McCallum and Kennedy Anderson were awarded “Silver Certificates,” and Marshall Baskin was awarded a “Bronze Certificate.”

Fairview holds assembly to celebrate ‘I Love To Read’ month
Fairview’s I Love To Read month culminated it’s “Super Hero Reader” theme with an all school assembly filled with reading awards and recognition, singing superheroes, minute to win it games and the unveiling of the longest Superhero Pop Up Book ever, made by each student and linked together by grade levels. Each of these books spanned the length of the schools cafeteria - did we break a Guiness Book of World’s record? Not sure but it sure was fun!
MHS Focus Students earn 3.0 for second quarter
Congratulations as well to Kaitlyn Johnstone, Kaleigh Tober, Samantha Kaml, Haley Kollar, Allison Wahl and Mahayla Mensing for testing into the “Achievement” category. We are proud of all of you, German students! Best of luck with your continued studies!
The Mora Focus program is designed to help 9-12th grade students overcome obstacles in their lives to achieve at a higher level of personal and academic success. The program is very pleased to announce eight Focus students that earned a grade point average of 3.0 or higher for quarter two of the 2014-15 school year. Congratulations to all the students for their efforts! Pictured are the 3.0 10-12th grade Focus recipients: Hailey H., Tricia J., Sam B., Ashlie C., David E., Ashlee C., Riley G., and Chris P.

Wedding Showers Continue to Break from Tradition Rain showers on a wedding day may bring good luck, but they are seldom coveted. However, a different type of shower altogether is often highly anticipated and can help couples feel like they’re one in a million. Wedding showers are gift-giving parties held for couples about to get married. The custom began in the nineteenth century and continues to present day, primarily in North America and Australia. Guests traditionally “shower” the bride-to-be with all the necessities (and some fun extras) that she will need after she ties the knot. These gifts will help the soon-to-be-married couple establish a home together.
Bridal showers are steeped in tradition, but today’s bridal showers continue to veer off the beaten path. Nowadays, bridal showers feature fun and games much like a party having nothing to do with a wedding. • Couples’ showers: Modern couples who like to be all-inclusive are now planning bridal showers that cater to mixed audiences. Dubbed a “couple shower,” these parties include female and male friends and relatives. Gifts are still the main focus of the event, but they’re varied and include guy-friendly items within the mix of household goods. • Power showers: Many are familiar with the terms “man cave” and “bromance,” but few may know that there are now wedding showers geared entirely around the groom. Known as “power showers,” these events focus on the groom-to-be, who is showered with a bevy of gadgets and power tools that are certain to stock his future garage. The parties are decidedly more testosterone-friendly and can include golf outings, poker nights or action movie flicks as possible themes. • Destination/activity showers: Rather than having guests hang around a restaurant watching gift after gift get unwrapped, some bridal parties opt to throw an activity shower. These showers are fo-
cused around a particular activity. For example, ladies may be treated to a day at the spa. Other ideas include horseback riding at a stable or a day at the ballpark. Because hosting an activity shower for dozens of people may get expensive, these types of showers may be reserved for only your closest friends and family members. • Bride-involved showers: The idea of walking into a room and being surprised by friends and family members is appealing to some brides-to-be but not everyone. Some brides prefer not to be surprised by a shower and actually would like to have a role in the planning of the party. However, this is delicate ground on which to tread, considering there may be differences over where the party is held and even the overall experience of the party. These type of showers should be discussed before any plans are made, and tasks should be delegated in accordance with those plans. It is customary for a bridal shower to take place before a wedding. But new trends have emerged that are shaking up the way showers are planned and held.

7 Tips for Honeymooning A couple’s honeymoon is their first real chance to relax and unwind after the hustle and bustle of wedding planning. Couples who want to make sure their first getaway as husband and wife goes off without a hitch might want to heed the following advice.
2. Read online reviews. Online reviews can paint an accurate picture of a potential honeymoon destination. Look at vacationer-supplied photographs to see how the accommodations match up to the resort’s own marketing materials. You don’t want too many surprises, such as service fees, dirty rooms or a lack of beach amenities, to ruin your 1. Start saving early. Honeymoons are expensive, trip. so to afford the vacation of your dreams it’s wise to begin saving for the honeymoon as early as 3. Plan at least one exciting outing. While on your possible. It may be well worth it to compromise honeymoon, be sure to go on at least one advenand make sacrifices in other areas to ensure you ture. Try an activity you have never done before, have enough funds for your dream honeymoon such as snorkeling, traveling a zip line or swimgetaway. Do not expect cash gifts at your wedding ming with stingrays. to pay for your trip. If you do, you may be sorely disappointed when the time comes to take off. 4. Pack early. After a long wedding day and reception spent dancing into the wee hours of the morning, you probably do not want to spend time packing. Pack your suitcases and travel essentials
in advance of your wedding day so you have more time to sleep in before you depart for the airport. Also, remember not to over-pack. You want to have room for the souvenirs you purchase along the way. 5. Enjoy your surroundings. Put down the smartphone or tablet enough to truly enjoy your surroundings. A honeymoon is an opportunity to relax, and that may not be possible if you’re tied to your devices. Friends at home can wait for your status updates and wedding pictures. 6. Splurge on something expensive. Whether it’s an ultra-fancy dinner or an exotic souvenir, indulge. 7. Leave your itinerary open. After scores of wedding appointments and watching the clock, it’s nice to fly by the seat of your pants.

2015 How to Decide Between a Band or Deejay Few things set the tone for a wedding ceremony and reception better than music. Music establishes ambiance and serves to transition guests through the various components of the day.
Many deejays also blend songs seamlessly and may incorporate lights and other effects into their performances, which can encourage guests to loosen up and hit the dance floor.
Deejay
The deejay is one of the first vendors people think of when they envision a wedding reception. Music is played in various ways throughout a wedding. For Perhaps because they are less exexample, the wedding ceremony may be accompanied by pensive, deejays tend to be more a pianist or violinist, while music during the reception is popular than bands among tousually provided by a band or deejay. day’s couples.
Deejays also tend to travel with less equipment than bands, so they will take up less space in a party room.
The decision of whether to hire a band or deejay often comes down to personal preference and budget. The following are some things couples should consider as they make their decision to go with a band or deejay.
Deejays are advantageous for various reasons. Thanks to the accessibility of digital music, deejays can often procure just about any song a couple desires for the reBand ception. No matter which road a couple chooses to travel, it’s a good idea to listen to a deejay or band perform in a live situation before making a final decision. Couples also should confirm that the performers they meet or audition will be the ones who will perform at their weddings. Make sure this is written into your contract. Couples should provide a list of songs they want to hear well in advance of their wedding day. This affords a deejay ample time to find each song or bands to learn the songs before the big day arrives

Thank You
O
ur performance of the 12th Annual Chamber Foundation Murder Mystery entertained over 160 people and raised over $6000.00. Funds came from our audience’s (and cast members!) purchases of silent auction items, gift certificates, ticket sales, and raffle items – of which all were generously donated by local businesses, cast members and community members. The show fetched a large crowd last Saturday night. “FINAL CUT” – the casting of Glokken Schpeilburg’s newest blockbuster. Those in attendance were of course the director, Glokken Schpeilburg, his ex-wife and actress Nova Devoe, former casting couch lover, Cheri Pitt and her beau – actor Brock Hudson. Liza Manzinelli was there to recover her stolen script and kill a few folks in the process. Sloan Shivvers and Don Pardonme were our red carpet hosts along with our famous makeup artists, Quinnie Winston, Salty Head and Pepper Squeeks who continually stole the show.
Many attendees came in costumes and there was a costume contest, which was won by Betty Boop – Sandy Juettner. She was endowed with an extremely large top and bottom! There also was a “best detective” contest won by Dr. Jim Williams and best actor and actress went to Wayne & Barbara Fredrickson. The play was memorable, fun and a great way to spend a few hours, have a nice meal, be fully entertained and raise funds for the Kanabec Area Chamber Foundation. The chamber is so grateful for the assistance of so many people – who just volunteer their time and talents for this show. We had some new faces that we hope will continue to stay with our cast and crew along with all of the “regulars” – aptly named the High Anxiety Players (okay, just made that up!). The Chamber is currently developing plans for the 2016 Murder Mystery slated for April 2, 2016 to be held again at Fish Lake Resort.

THANK YOU Thank you to everyone for visits, cards, prayers and phone calls while I was a patient at St. Cloud Hospital and Country Manor Rehab Center recovering from a broken hip. Your encouragement helped make my time there pleasant and my healing process went well. I’m back at home now and enjoying being here after seven weeks away. I continue to make progress toward walking independently. We live in a great community. Thanks for your part in it. Jean Entner
