Second-graders Read About Luxembourg

Second-graders from Mrs. Arends’ Class were delighted to receive a message from an Olympian in Sochi. Mrs. Arends’ class wrote to Luxembourg’s Olympic skier Kari Peters. He wrote back and thanked the class for their good wishes. As a way to tie the Olympics into the Fairview Elementary I Love to Read Activities, each class chose a country to learn about. Teachers read children’s stories about that country and stories by authors from that country. They decorated their doors and made a flag to represent that country. In conjunction with the Olympic Opening Ceremony, Fairview had a Reading Opening Ceremony with a Parade Of Nations where each class paraded into the Gym with the flag of their country. Mrs. Arends’ class chose Luxembourg, which is located west of Germany between France and Belgium. Luxembourg is 1,000 square miles and has a population of 525,000. This year, Luxembourg sent only one athlete to the Olympics, skier Kari Peters. Mrs. Arends tied the concept of one individual working hard, and showing effort, determination, and perseverance into daily work habits. Mrs. Arends invited Kari Peters, who skied the 15 men’s classical in Sochi, to attend next year’s Mora Vasaloppet ski race…if he’s not too busy with Olympic training.

Ninth-graders in Animals, Plants and Natural Resources making homemade ice cream and butter while learning about the dairy industry.

Lakes, Rivers and Wetlands course making model watersheds and seeing “if it rains” what happens.

Spanish Classes take Field Trip

A photo of the Spanish III and IV classes at the Mercado Central during a recent field trip. First, students watched a performance at the Ordway featuring Maria de Barros. The music incorporates many rhythms used in the Spanishspeaking world. Afterward, they ate lunch and practiced their Spanish at the Mercado Central, a Mexican mall which is home to a wide variety of shops and authentic restaurants.

Dear Parents and Guardians of Mora High students, As we get closer toward state testing in the spring, the math department at Mora High School will be working to help all of our students succeed on the math test. Below are some opportunities to make that happen: Resources we offer to help: • Math Resource Room (MRR) - This is a space especially designed for math assistance and is staffed by a licensed math teacher. Below are the times it’s available: • Before school each day from 7:45am8:05am • During hours 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, & 7 • Practice tests, assignments, and other resources What you can do to help: • Encourage students to use the MRR • Ask them to teach you what they are working on • Strongly encourage your child to do the Online Item Samplers, found at . . . http:// tinyurl.com/ks4up7q (especially important if your child is in 11th grade, as the computerized test is new this year for them) If you don’t have Internet access at home, the MRR has four computers available for student use. With your help, we will not only deepen students’ understanding of math but also accomplish growth within our state tests. If you have any thoughts, ideas, or questions, please don’t hesitate to ask one of us. Mora High School Math Department

Mr. Mattson’s Minnesota History class recently took their field trip to Minneapolis/St. Paul area. This is what Minnehaha Falls looks like in January. What a beautiful sight! Mill City, Falls of St. Anthony, Ft. Snelling, Summit Avenue, and the James J. Hill House were all included in this field trip for Mora High School students.

“Teasing-Harassment in Disguise” Students at Trailview and Fairview had the opportunity to view a lyceum by Critters and Company. The title was “Teasing-Harassment in Disguise.” Students learned about abused animals and how their mistreatment affects them long after the initial event.

For a list of Community Education offerings, please visit the Mora School Website at www.mora.k12.mn.us and click on Community Education (under News/Events & Community) or go to the Webstore. If questions, please call (320) 679-6200.

Thank You for Another Great Year! The Jolstad family would like to thank everyone who attended the 7th annual Jolly’s Jiggin’ Jamboree memorial fishing contest. The contest was held Feb. 22 on Knife Lake and we appreciate everyone who braved the wind and arctic chill to attend. All of the support and donations raised money for the Greg Jolstad Memorial Scholarship fund. We look forward to awarding a scholarship to a graduating senior at Mora High School again this year. We would like to give a huge thanks to Jim and Beth Hallin. All of their hard work and dedication to the contest each year is so much appreciated! We would also like to thank Knife Lake Sanitation, Mora Boy Scouts, Don Holznagel, The Crow’s Nest, DJ Brett & Julie Anderson, and Jim Struve. Another big thanks goes to all of our sponsors, and countless volunteers that helped make the fishing contest a success. We hope to see all of you again next year! With heartfelt thanks and appreciation, Gary, Jill, Linda, Johnny, Cheryl, Mike, Dorothy and families

Tips When Toasting the Bride and Groom

T

oasting the bride and groom at a wedding reception is a responsibility that typically falls on the shoulders of the bride’s father as well as the best man and the maid of honor. Though it is an honor to give a wedding toast, it also can be nerve-wracking, as no one wants to give a toast that’s memorable for all the wrong reasons. While the best toasts are often those that veer off the beaten path, coming from the heart rather than from a how-to guide found on the Internet, there is a certain formula men and women can follow to ensure their toasts cover all of the appropriate bases without offending the bridal party or fellow guests. • Acknowledge the guests. Families are more geographically diverse than ever before, so more and more weddings host guests who come from far and wide to celebrate with happy couples on their wedding days. It’s customary for men and women making wedding toasts to acknowledge the guests, thanking them for being there. This is often a great way for best men and maids of honor to break the ice and calm their nerves, especially at larger weddings where they may only know a small percentage of the guests. When thanking the guests, be sure to thank the parents of the bride and groom as well. • Explain your relationship to the bride and/or groom. Best men and maids of

honor should devote a portion of their toasts to explaining their personal relationships with the bride and/or groom. IInn ntroduce yourself and explain how you met the bride or groom. Oftentimes, such stosto to-ries have a comical twist that can further ccalm am al your nerves. • Aim for a jovial toast. Wedding toasts are typically given at the wedding reception, when guests and the bridal party are ready to celebrate. Such an atmosphere lends itself to a jovial toast wherein best men and maids of honor focus on happy times with the bride and groom. Tell a funny anecdote that illustrates the special bond you have with the bride or groom. When choosing a story to tell, remember to keep things appropriate for guests of all ages, including young children. • Steer clear of alcohol before giving your toast. Many people overindulge in alcohol at wedding receptions, but best men and maids of honor should avoid consuming alcohol until after they have toasted the bride and groom. Horror stories about drunken, inappropriate wedding toasts may seem more like an urban legend than a legitimate possibility, but the tendency for alcohol to lower people’s inhibitions makes it dangerous for men and women to consume it

before giving their toasts. • Give your best wishes to the bride and groom before raising your glass. Raising your glass to toast the bride and groom is often the last step before your toasting duties officially end. But before you raise your glass, remember to offer your best wishes to both the bride and groom. Once those sentiments have been expressed, ask the guests to raise their glasses and toast the newlyweds. Toasting happy couples at their wedding receptions can be stressful for best men and maids of honor who are unaccustomed to speaking in front of large groups of people. But following a certain formula and speaking from the heart will ensure such toasts go off without a hitch.

Tips for Newlyweds About to Merge Finances N

ewlyweds often have a lot on their plates upon returning from their honeymoons. One of the more critical issues newly married couples must address is their finances and how those finances will be combined going forward.

Combining finances can be a touchy subject for many couples, especially those who had not given much thought to their finances prior to tying the knot. But there are steps couples can take to make the process of merging finances go more smoothly.

• Discuss finances early and often. Allowing finances to be the elephant in the room is a mistake, as couples do not want to begin their lives together treading lightly around an issue as significant as finances. Couples should discuss their expenditures and spending habits as early as possible, as one of the biggest hurdles newly married couples must clear is coming to grips with one another’s financial habits. If such habits have already been discussed, then developing a financial plan will be much easier once that time comes. When discussing finances, define both short-term and long-term goals and how each of you can adjust your spending habits to make those goals come true.

• Pay off any debts. The cost of weddings has skyrocketed over the last several decades, and many newlyweds find themselves in a considerable amount of debt upon returning from their honeymoons. When merging finances, couples should prioritize paying down such debt, as debt is a significant source of stress for newlyweds and long-married couples alike. Newly married couples with little or no debt should avoid spending above their means in the months after they get married. Such spending is commonplace, as newly married couples often want to fully furnish their new homes or reward themselves for pulling off their weddings. But new debt can be just as stressful on a marriage as debt from the wedding, so avoid this potentially problematic pitfall by paying down existing debts with your newly merged finances. • Make note of mutual expenses and open a joint account to pay for those expenses. Mutual expenses like mortgage payments, food and utilities should be the responsibility of each partner, and a joint account should be established to handle such expenses. When opening a joint account, discuss how much and how often each partner will contribute money. One partner might earn considerably more money

than another, so work out a reasonable agreement that details how much each partner will contribute each month, and whether such contributions will be made on a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly basis. • Make concessions for one another. When merging finances, couples often discover that they don’t see eye-to-eye on how each person spends money. Couples who successfully merge their finances often note the importance of making concessions with regard to their partners’ spending on certain hobbies or luxuries. As long as those hobbies are not putting couples in debt or jeopardizing their financial goals, couples can make concessions so their partners continue to be happy and enjoy their favorite activities. Merging finances is an issue that looms for many newlyweds or couples about to tie the knot. Though it’s not always easy, merging finances early and discussing goals can ensure newlyweds get off on the right financial foot.

Wedding Thank-You Cards Etiquette W

eddings and gifts go hand-inhand. Couples who are tying the knot can expect to receive scores of gifts, ranging from simple well-wishes to cash to items listed on their registries. Because gift-giving is tradition, couples should plan on spending some time writing thank-you notes to express gratitude to the people who were kind enough to give a gift.

Contrary to popular belief, couples do not have a year’s grace period to mail out thankyou notes after the gift has been received or the wedding has taken place.

According to the etiquette experts at The Emily Post Institute, all thank-you cards should be written and mailed within three months of receipt of a gift. It is preferable that the thankyou be written directly after receipt of the gift, but time-strapped couples may not have the opportunity to do so. However, writing a few thank-you cards every few days can alleviate having a giant pile to do later on.

Many couples prefer to order thank-you stationery when they order their wedding invitations. This way the paper, font and style match the original invitations. In addition, it may be less expensive to order stationery as a package.

In some cases, a photography package may include thank-you notes with wallet-sized photos to include. Couples can then mail out a nice sentiment with a photo from the wedding.

Here are some other guidelines to follow.

To keep with the etiquette time frame of thank-you notes, it is important to find out when the thank-you photos and cards will arrive first from the photographer. The thank-you sentiments should not be delayed by the photographer.

• Do not use form letters or preprinted cards to which you simply add your signature.

For those interested in less expensive options, preprinted thank-you cards can be purchased at a stationery store. There are many designs and price points available. Remember, it is not the card itself, but the thank-you that is important. As to the rules regarding those getting a thank-you, it is just about anyone who contributed in some part to the wedding, even if a verbal thanks was already offered. Anyone who provided an engagement, shower or wedding gift, those who gave gifts of money, anyone who hosted a party or shower, attendants in the wedding, people who may have housed wedding guests, parents of the bride and groom, suppliers and vendors, and employers who have wished couples well should all be included on the thankyou list.

• Mail out a handwritten note to each and every person being thanked.

• Be sincere in your messages and try to mention the gift and what it will be used for. • Promptly respond to gifts that were received through the mail so the giver knows they arrived. • Never mention that you plan to return a gift or exchange it. • Mentioning the amount of a monetary gift is optional, but it does confirm to the giver that the right amount was received. • A mass thank-you posted on social media is not adequate. • Even if you are late with writing out thankyou notes, that doesn’t exclude you from doing so. By adhering to thank-you card etiquette, couples will ensure their guests know that gifts and efforts to make the wedding special were appreciated.

Unique Bridesmaids Gifts by Nina Callaway

Y

our bridesmaids are some of your closest friends and family members. You’ve selected these women to stand next to you on your wedding day: show your appreciation for them by giving them a unique bridesmaid gift that’ll they’ll treasure.

Bridesmaid gifts run the gamut in terms of price, style, and individuality. Some brides spend hundreds of dollars, while others chose to spend only a few, or chose to make the gift themselves. Some people think that the cost of bridesmaid gifts should correlate with your wedding budget. Others say that the more time your friends helped you with wedding planning, the more you should spend on a bridesmaid gift for them. There’s no right or wrong answer - do what feels best to you.

you than gifts for them. The best bridesmaid gifts have very little do your wedding and instead celebrate your friends’ unique personalities.

• A box of artisanal chocolates

However you chose to honor your wedding attendants, make sure they know how much they mean to you by enclosing a personal note with each present. Here are some bridesmaid gift ideas to get you started.

• A gift certificate to her favorite local restaurant

Personalized Bridesmaid Gifts • Personalized photo albums or photo books • Digital photo frame, pre-loaded with pictures of the two of you • A tote in her favorite color, personalized with her name or monogram • A charm necklace featuring her initial • Personalized stationery set

You can also choose to get everyone the same thing, get variations on a theme, or chose entirely different presents for each person. Try to spend about the same amount on each present, except for the maid-of-honor’s gift, which is typically more lavish than the other ones.

Bridesmaid Gifts That Pamper

Many bride’s opt to give their friends jewelry or accessories to wear at the wedding as their bridesmaid gift. Unless the accessories are tailored to suit each of your friends’ individual tastes, they aren’t appropriate gifts—they’re more a gift for

rides- and grooms-to-be are often nervous when the day they will tie the knot finally arrives. The realization that months and months of planning and anticipation are finally about to come to a head often inspires some jitters in the days leading up to the wedding. But the following are a few ways couples can calm those nerves in the hours leading up to the moment they have devoted so much time and effort to planning since becoming engaged. • Get a good night’s rest. Couples should prioritize a good night’s sleep the night before they are set to walk down the aisle. Make your last night as an unmarried couple an early night so you will look your best and have plenty of energy on your big day, which will no doubt start early and end late. A good night’s sleep can go a long way toward ensuring you’re in a good mood as you handle a full slate of responsibilities on your wedding day. • Spend time with family and friends. Chances are your closest friends and family members are playing significant roles in your wedding, and spending time with

them is a great way to keep your nerves in check while having a fun time before, during and after the ceremony. • Don’t be afraid to delegate responsibilities. In spite of months of planning, couples will still have a to-do list come their wedding days. If such a list is overwhelming, brides- and grooms-to-be should not be afraid to delegate some of the tasks on their lists. Bridesmaids and groomsmen can no doubt handle any outstanding tasks that don’t require any input from the bride or groom. • Relax as the ceremony draws nearer. As the start time for the ceremony approaches, couples about to tie the knot should take time to sit down and relax. Once their hair and makeup is finished, brides-to-be should sit down and exhale or arrange for the photographer to snap some fun pre-wedding photos with their bridesmaids. Grooms-to-be can do the same with their groomsmen, sharing a few last-minute jokes to ensure everyone is relaxed and ready to go before taking their places.
