Help Your Horse Make the Transition from Cold to Warm Weather by Katherine Blocksdorf Spring is the time to get back into a riding routine, put horses out on pasture and clean up after a long winter. Here are tips to spring into spring and get ready for summer. Begin your riding or driving schedule slowly if your horse (and perhaps you) have been idle over the winter months. Horses who haven’t shed out their long winter coats will heat up faster when working and take longer to cool down and dry out on warm spring days. Don’t let your horse get chilled by turning it out with a wet coat—spring nights can be chilly and your horse could get cold.

Horses accustomed to being blanketed during the cold weather may still need blankets during temperature dips or

that may be heaved up by the frost, or heaved over the fence by passersby. An acquaintance of mine was surprised to find a bottle a few feet from a round bale feeder-at some yards away from the nearest roadside. Choose a stretch of warm sunny weather to paint stable exteriors and paint or creosote fences before the weather gets too hot to work comfortably. Take note (and photos) of areas with drainage problems so you can remember where to add fill or improve drainage once the ground is dry and the weather is better for outdoor work. This way, you won’t have the same problem next winter and spring. Get your pasture growing with the proper fertilizers or soil amendments. Consult your local agricultural office for soil testing services and recommendations specific to your area and soil type.
