ADVERTISER, MARCH 17, 2013 - 5
Mora Public Schools
MARCH 2013 www.mora.k12.mn.us
Climb Theatre Productions
Mora School Employees Volunteer
Trailview students viewed a program called the “Knee Jerk Reaction” and Fairview viewed a program called “The Yellow Troll.” The programs were from Climb Theatre Productions and were focused on using self-control. The programs were paid for by the Trailview and Fairview annual fundraisers.
Fifty-seven Mora Public School employees and their families set aside time in their busy schedules to volunteer in “Feed My Starving Children” event held in Coon Rapids on the evening of March 8. With the quantity of volunteers, the Mora team was able to package enough food to feed 50 children from Haiti for an entire year! This equates to well over 18,500 meals packaged! We are proud to have such a wonderful, thoughtful, giving community who care about children around the world. If you are interested in volunteering at Feed My Starving Children, please visit www.fmsc.org.
Sky Dome
MobileEd Productions was at Trailview and Fairview to put on 12 45-minute presentations. The Sky Dome reviewed phases of the moon, constellations, orbits of the planets, discussion of the galaxy, and Mythology. The lyceum was paid through Trailview and Fairview Student Incentive Funds (Fall and Spring Fundraisers).
Geometry and Construction Departments Team Up
Youth Art Month March is Youth Art Month (YAM) and we celebrate it all year long but in many different ways. Shown here is the kindergarten student who was selected as one of the 10 very talented Runners-Up Winners in the See Saw Book Club’s “Where Should Fly Guy Go Next” art contest. Mavrik drew Fly Guy going to Mount Rushmore and won a Fly Guy Library for Ms. Faver’s classroom and $50 worth of art supplies to continue drawing and developing his art abilities! Congratulations Mavrik! Trailview Elementary artists will be having a Student Showcase March 14 showcasing arts and academic achievements in all grades and Mora High School has two student artists showcasing their art at the Art Educators of Minnesota State Capitol Youth Art Month Exhibit which opens on March 24 and runs through March 30 in the North Portico of the Capitol. The students representing Mora at that exhibit are Claire Larson and Ashley Bergstrom. Other district artwork will be displayed at the local public library during the months of March and April. Help us celebrate by hanging your favorite artist’s work on the fridge or in a place of honor in your home!!
Dr. Seuss’ Birthday Celebration Two Mora High School Departments have teamed up this semester to create a new course that allows students to use skills from both their areas. The new Geometry and Construction course is team taught by math teacher Brandon Ostien and Industrial Tech teacher Steve Cottingham. This class requires students to use their measurement skills, consumer knowledge about cost and profit and to learn geometry concepts required for building. They also need to learn basic safety when working with wood, as well as woodworking skills needed to complete projects. Once these skills are mastered, students then set to work building and selling projects from a list they developed. Students have already made bean bag toss games, bird houses, plant stands and tables. The students’ finished projects are well done and it has been great to see them feel a sense of accomplishment with their completed work.
On March 5, Early Childhood celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday. We had activities all around the many wonderful books that he has written. Pictured are two children fishing in a boat for the book “One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish.” There were many other activities also.
Student Council
The Student Council has had a very busy year. Officers, Ally Erickson, Cassidy Carlisle, Jared Richter and Aaron Schumacher and Noelle Elvehjem have led the council through many activities. We started the year with the “Friday Night Lights” Homecoming. This involves a great deal of work organizing a variety of activities for the week and then ending with the Homecoming Dance. The students also raised funds through Christmas Grams and Valentine Grams that help support the Student Council Scholarships at the end of the year for deserving seniors. The Council also had a successful food drive and movie night before winter break. The Winter Formal was held in the high school auditorium in February and Snow Week was March 4 - 8 with dress up days, a very successful Talent Show and a Pep Fest on Friday. First place in the talent show went to Michael Greenberg and Greg Mork, second place to the Senior Men’s Chorus Line, and third place to a very talented Cody Brown. The Student Council has also sponsored two blood drives that have totaled to over 200 units of blood for the Red Cross. The Council continues to work on Earth Day activities and a Spring Fling Dance, honoring the seniors.
For a list of Community Education offerings, please visit the Mora School Website at www.mora.k12.mn.us and click on Community Education. If questions, please call (320) 679-6200.

Tips for Checking Your Horse’s Fences, Fields and Paddocks by Katherine Blocksdorf After a long winter, fence, paddocks and pastures can look a little battered. There’s a lot of work for horse owners to do once the ice and snow is gone. But, of course, it’s a labor of love as we get ready for the hot months ahead. • Early spring is the best time to frost seed your pastures. Consult your local agricultural office for the best time and grass varieties for your location. • Check fence lines for loose or broken rails, wire, gate hinges or latches. • Tighten or repair electric fence lines. Snow, ice and wind can cause electric fence wire to become loose over the winter. Retighten insulators and retension the wires. Also check for downed branches or thick weeds that could short the circuit out. • Walk your pastures and look for any debris that may be heaved up by the frost, or heaved over the fence by passersby. An acquaintance of mine was surprised to find a bottle a few feet from a round bale feeder-at some yards away from the nearest roadside. • Choose a stretch of warm sunny weather to paint stable exteriors and paint or creosote fences before the weather gets too hot to work comfortably. • Take note (and photos) of areas with drainage problems so you can remember where to add fill or improve drainage
once the ground is dry and the weather is better for outdoor work. This way, you won’t have the same problem next winter and spring.
proper fertilizers or soil amendments. Consult your local agricultural office for soil testing services and recommendations specific to your area and soil type.

cleaning, sweep down dust and chaff.
Prevent stables from flooding next year. Now is the time to find out where the drainage problems are and make plans to correct them before next year. Taking photos of the problem will help you decide what action to take and show a contractor exactly what needs to be prevented or repaired.
When sweeping out aisles put the dust and manure in the wheelbarrow or muck bucket, don’t sweep it out the door. Built up manure, chaff and dust holds more moisture than just plain dirt. In wet weather your doorways will turn into a muckier mess than if this area is kept manure and chaff free.
Clean stalls right down to the floor and allow them to dry thoroughly on a bright breezy day. Let as much sunlight in as possible-it’s a great disinfectant.
Check for rodent chews on wiring. Sweep out the hayloft. If the chaff is too dusty for horses to eat put it on your garden. It makes great mulch.
Stalls with dirt floors may need to have the Spring clean run-in shelters too. Remove top layer removed and new soil brought any manure, bedding, or spilled feed and in. consider replacing soil if has become too saturated. We’ve found after a few years of Consider putting up a length of eaves cleaning out our run-in that it has become trough above doorways to prevent ice lower than the surrounding area. We have buildup next winter and avoid those to build up the soil every so often so it annoying icy drips of water down your doesn’t become an indoor swimming neck as you go in and out. pool. Federal and state mandates are the biggest threats to increasing our electrical rates. I have met with both Federal and State elected officials in an effort to minimize these mandates to the electrical industry and I will continue to work hard to keep our electric rates as low as possible. I would appreciate your vote to re-elect me to the East Central Energy Board of Directors. Thank yyou.

Thank You for Another Successful Year!
The Jolstad family would like to thank everyone who attended the sixth annual Jolly’s Jiggin’ Jamboree held Feb. 23rd on Knife Lake. It was a gorgeous day filled with friends, family, fun and fishing (with over 100 fish registered). We appreciate all of the support and donations to raise monies for the Greg Jolstad Memorial Scholarship fund, and it was a great success! Again this year, we look forward to awarding a scholarship to a graduating senior at Mora High School. We would like to give Jim and Beth Hallin a huge thank you. All of their hard work and dedication to the JJJ each year is very much appreciated! We would also like to thank Knife Lake Sanitation, Don Holznagel, Mora HS Spanish Club, The Crow’s Nest, and DJ Brett and Julie Anderson. Another big thanks goes to all of our sponsors, and countless volunteers that helped us throughout the fishing contest. We look forward to seeing you all again next year! With heartfelt thanks and appreciation, Gary, Jill, Linda, Johnny, Cheryl, Mike, Dorthy and families
CELEBRATION OF GLORIA MILLER’S LIFE Come celebrate Gloria’s life on Saturday, March 30, 2013 from 1 - 4 p.m. at Upon the Rock Church located at 7901 Redoak Drive in Moundsview. Words of Comfort: Why? The question that is never far away, But healing doesn’t come from the explained. Jesus please don’t let this go in vain. You’re all I have, all that remains. So here I am, what’s left of me, where glory meets my suffering. I’m alive, even though a part of me has died. You take my heart and breath it back to life. I fall into your arms open wide, when the hurt and the healer collide. Breathe, sometimes I feel it’s all I can do. Pain so deep that I can hardly move. Just keep my eyes completely fixed on you, Lord take hold and pull me through. So here I am, what’s left of me, where glory meets my suffering. It’s the moment when humanity is overcome by majesty. When grace is ushered in for good and all our scars are understood. When mercy takes its rightful place and all these questions fade away. When out of weakness we must bow, and heart you say, “It’s over now.” Jesus come and break my fear. Wake my heart, take my tears and find your glory even here. I’m alive even though a part of me has died. Take my heart and breathe it back to life. I fall into your arms open wide, when the hurt and the healer collide.

ONLINE AUCTIONS
Mora, MN
Independent Affiliate of K-BID Online Auction Site
www.K-Bid.com Look for Five Star Auctions Five Star Auto Sales in Mora became an affiliate of K-Bid online auctions this past February when the owners began to get requests from their clients to sell their items. Today, there are 136,000 registered bidders. “There’s a distinct advantage to online auctions and that is there is an unlimited number of people who can see and bid on your items,” said Auction Manager Matt Berry.
Duane Helmbrecht Auto Sales General Manager
Matt said they have many bidders registered within Call “Kim” Auction Manager Minnesota and the surrounding states, but have sold to buyers as far away as Connecticut, Kentucky and Canada. Sellers can either bring their items to Five Star Auctions for safe storage or items can be stored at their property until they are sold. Matt works with sellers to take photos, develop accurate product descriptions, uploads items to the online auction and advertise for the auctions to ensure the maximum number of bidders view the items. You can be sure that Matt is working for you. He said that the staff at Five Star Auto Sales has learned what sort of items and what kind of descriptions encourage sales on K-Bid. If Matt thinks an item won’t do well at the auction simply because the environment isn’t right or if it could be sold for more in a different format, he is the type to say so. That type of honesty is what makes his customers loyal. “Our job is to make sure people see your items,” said Matt. “We work hard to be honest and up-front with our clients. We want customers to get more money than they expect, that way everybody’s happy.” And after an item sells at auction, the seller can expect to receive their check within two weeks of the auction closing date. The folks over at Five Star Auto Sales have sold items such as: Snowmobiles, Motorcycles, Lawn/Garden, ATVs, Boats, Trailers, Vehicles, Collectibles, Antiques, Coins, Jewelry and Real Estate.
