SNG Services Gunsmithing & Tool Sharpening Repair • Refinish • Buy & Sell • Trade • Transfer Sale of Ammunition • New & Used Firearms Large Parts & Accessories Inventory • Limited Archery Supplies SNG Services is a local company with a nationwide footprint. Owned and operated by Shawn Paul, SNG is a gunsmith service, a licensed firearms dealer and a full service tool sharpening shop. Shawn has been working in the gunsmithing field since the 80s and has honed his skill to the point that he is one of the few in the state who are able to work as a gunsmith full time. Shawn sees himself as a firearms mechanic and likens the workings of a firearm to that of a vehicle. He says that when your transmission needs to get rebuilt, you send your car to a professional; when guns need service or repair, you should seek out the same level of professionalism. As a full time, experienced professional in this field, he offers a level of excellence that can’t be found many other places. With the reputation he has built, he is often called on by firearms professionals across the country to fix and solve problems that have stumped others. Despite his nationwide reputation, Shawn is deeply embedded in the community and focuses his business on the local market, treating his customers as friends and devoting the same level of care to their firearms that he would to his own; knowing that in his field, failure can be deadly. Shawn is a local businessman who has raised his family in this community, does business here and is in Mora for the long term. He values his reputation and guarantees all of his work, saying that if it can’t be done right, it shouldn’t be done at all. If you have a gun that hasn’t been fired in a while or needs repair, bring it in to Shawn for a full cleaning, inspection and test fire. New and used firearms along with ammo and accessories are also available. If you need anything at all sharpened, from tools to kitchen knives, Shawn can handle that too. Come in as a customer and you’re likely to leave as a friend.

All Work Guaranteed! Over 30 yrs experience!

SURPRISE 90TH BIRTHDAY PARTY for Emma Engblom(Halbert) at the Ogilvie Community Center. Join us for coffee and dessert on Saturday, March 29, 1-4 p.m.

THANK YOU I want to thank my family, their spouses, grandchildren, relatives, church members at the Immaculate Conception Church, all my friends, all who were concerned about my health, and especially my wife for her care while I was ill and hospitalized in December and January. Jerry Bombard BABY HENRIK JOHN ARNETT OSTRANDER An Angel Never Dies Don’t let them say I wasn’t born, that something stopped my heart, I felt each tender squeeze you gave, I loved you from the start. Although my body you can’t hold, it doesn’t mean I’m gone. This world was worthy not of me. God chose that I move on. I know the pain that drowns your soul, what you are forced to face. You have my word, I’ll fill your arms. Someday we will embrace. You’ll hear that it was “meant to be, God doesn’t make mistakes.” But that won’t soften your worst blow or make your heart not ache. I’m watching over all you do, another child you’ll bear, Believe me when I say to you, that I am always there. There will come a time, I promise you, when you will hold my hand, Stroke my face and kiss my lips and then you’ll understand. Although I never breathed your air, or gazed into your eyes, That doesn’t mean I never was, An Angel Never Dies. Dena and Jared would like to thank Dr. Bergman and the OB staff at FirstLight Health System for their compassion and support. The family of Baby Henrick John Arnett Ostrander

SAUNDRA JEAN 3/22/40-3/23/10 HAPPY BIRTHDAY AND WE MISS YOU! You Are Missed So Very Much! I often sit and think about The years that have passed by And of the happiness and joy That was shared by you and I. I think of all the laughter, The smiles and all the fun And, before I even knew it, My tears have once again begun. For, although it brings me comfort To walk down memory lane It reminds me how, without you, Life has never been the same! FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS! We Love and Miss You! Your loving daughters Pam and Becki, Your precious grandkids, great-grandkids and your entire family!

THANK YOU Pine City Hoops would like to shout out a HUGE thank you to our local businesses that so generously donated to help out our youth basketball program. These include: Pizza Pub, Northwoods Bank, Walmart, Cabin Coffees, Holiday Gas Station, Ruby’s Pantry, and Lee’s Pro Shop. We had a great season and couldn’t have done it without your support. Also, a BIG thank you goes out to the parents, kids, volunteer coaches, and our custodian/ staff at our schools. It takes a community to make a program like this run smoothly and we appreciate all that you do to help out our kids. We had a “great” number of participants this year and hope that continues in the future to build a strong basketball program for Pine City Schools. GO DRAGONS! Pine City Hoops

THANK YOU I want to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped to make my benefit such a success, especially Mike and Deb Hallin, Kevin Norby and Jane Schmidt, my bank friends, my sister Dee Dee Blum and daughters, Stephanie and Maggie for planning it, Pam Mattson and all my friends helping at the bake sale; and, of course, my wonderful husband for the many trips to the Crystal to deliver donations. I never realized when I said that a fundraiser would be nice that there would be so much work involved but am so touched that people were willing to do it for my family and me. To my family members and friends who drove a long way to be with us and those who made donations, thank you, it meant a lot. To those of you who stopped in to give me a hug and express your concern, thank you. I needed that. To Steph’s friends who came to support her and the rest of our family and those that helped serve beer for the beer bust, thank you. You are true friends. To Jenna and Dusty for all your help at the benefit, thank you. I love you guys. To my bank friends who spent time planning and then many hours at the benefit selling T-shirts, etc., thank you. You are like family to me. To those of you who donated to my fund at the bank, thank you. You are very generous. To the wonderful business owners in town who graciously donated to the event, thank you. You are what a small town is all about. To Pam Mattson and everyone who helped with or baked for the sale and those who bought baked goods, thank you. I never dreamed a bake sale could do so well. To Mike and Deb, for all your donations, planning and hosting the benefit, thank you. Your generosity and support made this all possible. To Kevin and Jane for all your donations and for planning and organizing the live auction, thank you. You are such wonderful people. It is hard to put into words just what the benefit meant to me and my family. The money is only part of it. What has meant even more is seeing how much everyone cares about us. We will get through this with the help of all of you. Shelley, Paul, Stephanie and Maggie Hunt

Picking Bathroom Paint Colors In a main bathroom where the most personal grooming takes place it’s important to have a light, bright space. A lot of this can be achieved with the proper lighting but it’s also important to use the right bathroom paint colors. In a bathroom it’s always safe to go with light neutrals. Creams, taupes, and beiges in light shades will always work no matter what size the bathroom. They’re easy on the eye and tend to be relaxing and soothing. Here are some other popular bathroom paint colors: White – It’s clean, it’s bright, it’s simple: white bathrooms are classic and fresh and are always a safe option. If all white seems a bit boring, dress it up with colorful accessories like towels, bathmats, and vases of fresh flowers. Grey – While not the first color people think of for

bathrooms, light grey is sophisticated, elegant, and is great for urban and contemporary homes. To help keep it light and bright pair it with white accessories and fittings. Light blue – Blue has a calming effect and with its ties to water it’s ideally suited to the bathroom. A soft pastel shade paired with white fittings and trim has a summery, cape cod-like feeling. Sage – Light sage paired with white, gray or silver adds a slightly glam look to this utilitarian room. When it’s paired with wood vanities or shelving it takes on an outdoorsy, natural look. Yellow – Nothing says bright like yellow. Be sure to use soft shades though because strong lemony yellows can cast a yellow glow over everything – including your skin when you’re trying to apply makeup. Lavender – Lavender paired with white has a feminine and slightly glamorous feeling. Too keep it from

looking too girly pair it with gray, or even black. Experimenting with color can be fun but the bathroom might not be the place to do it. Using strong colors can sometimes cause unwanted reflections. For instance, a bathroom painted dark red or orange can make things appear rosier than they really are. In a room where personal grooming takes place and where safety is a top priority, maximizing light and reducing shadows is important. If you want to experiment with bold or dark colors, try doing it in a powder room or guest bath where these kinds of things don’t really take place. It’s important in a bathroom not to use too many colors. Because they’re often small, bathrooms can become visually cluttered when there’s too much going on. Keep the bathroom paint colors light and if you feel you need a pop of bold color do it with the accessories.

Nine ways to improve curb appeal

Homeowners who want their homes to make strong first impressions must prioritize curb appeal. Homes with strong curb appeal sell well and can impart a welcoming feel to all visitors. Improving curb appeal need not be expensive, and the following are a handful of ways to improve the appearance of your home. 1. Install a bold-looking door in a vibrant color or one with a custom design. This helps the home stand out from other properties in the neighborhood. 2. Edge the driveway to create a distinct border between the driveway and the lawn or other landscaping features. This helps homes appear neat and well kept. 3. Use outdoor lighting to make a home more inviting. Outdoor lighting also makes properties safer to traverse at night.

4. Clean a home’s exterior to remove mildew or discolorations from the siding, driveway, patio, and other outdoor elements. 5. Improve landscapes with fresh plants and seasonal color. Homeowners without the time to plant can consider container gardens, which don’t take much time to assemble but still add appeal to a home’s exterior. 6. Prune planting beds and add new mulch to restore color. 7. Add shutters and accent trim to a home’s exterior to improve on the beauty of the house. 8. Install new fencing or give a fresh coat of paint or stain to an existing fence. 9. Replace concrete paths with tile or stone walkways to make entryways more impressive and inviting.

How to survive remodeling By Jackie Craven

Y

ou’re about to tear out walls, add new plumbing or perhaps even add a new room. How will you survive the rubble and confusion? These tips will help you keep your construction project going smoothly. Time Required: Be forewarned: Remodeling projects often take much longer than expected

Here’s How:

Find out which worker will be responsible.

1. Review the contract with your contractor. Make sure everyone agrees on the work that will be completed and how long it will take. Also be clear on the types of materials that will -- and will not -- be used.

4. To avoid confusion, choose one person in your family to act as spokesperson.

2. Find out what days and hours work will be conducted. Will carpenters show up on Saturday? Will plumbers ring your doorbell at 7 am? 3. You may need to give out keys to your home.

5. Store your stuff. What cannot be stored, cover with dropcloths. 6. Prevent plaster dust from spreading. Hang plastic sheets over doorways to work areas. 7. Show workers which bathroom to use and where to wash brushes. 8. Lay ground rules. Let workers know whether they can use your telephone. Remind them to keep the volume on their radios down. Tell workers where they can -- and cannot -- park their trucks. 9. Create a space for workers’ tools and supplies. Consider setting up a coffee pot for workers. 10. Preserve one part of your home as a workfree zone where you can live comfortably.

11. Try to stay out of the work area. 12. Check materials and fixtures before they are installed. Once the chandelier is hung, it may be too late to change it. 13. Workers may need to turn off power or water for some jobs. Plan ahead. 14. Expect delays. Your workers may encounter unforeseen problems. Materials may not arrive on time. One missing worker may throw the construction off schedule. 15. When requesting changes, go through your architect. If you do not have an architect, speak to the general contractor or supervisor.

Tips: 1. Living in the midst of a remodeling project is stressful. Plan some meals at your favorite restaurant. Spend a weekend at a romantic bed and breakfast inn. 2. Friendly interest and words of praise will smooth out the rough spots. But, don’t slow workers down with lots of questions. 3. Happy workers are more willing to return later on when you need repairs. Your remodeling project is an opportunity to cultivate lifelong relationships with carpenters, plumbers and electricians.

Spring Home Improvement Tackle spring cleaning with the environment in mind S

pring is a time of year when many people resolve to give their homes or apartments a thorough cleaning. Spring cleaning projects help people revitalize their homes for the warm months ahead, when windows are once again opened, fresh air pervades homes and items that might have accumulated over a dark and dreary winter have become a distant memory.

efficiency when cleaning a home. Eco-friendly spring cleaning practices produce less waste and rely on less chemicals to rejuvenate a home and get it ready for those seasons when huddling inside under the covers takes a backseat to lounging around the house as fresh air washes into the home. The following are a handful of ways to efficiently clean a home while also protecting the environment.

Many families have spring cleaning rituals that allow them to efficiently clean their homes in a single weekend. But it’s just as important for spring cleaners to place as great an emphasis on the environment as they do on

• Clear out the clutter. Clutter is an enemy to homeowners and the environment alike. That’s because addressing clutter is often an inefficient process in which homeowners methodically go through items that have accumulat-

• Use cleaners only when windows are open. Many people get a head start on spring cleaning in late winter, when the weather might have started to warm up but has not yet warmed to the point when windows throughout the home can

When sifting through clutter in a home, discard those items that have gone ignored for years, as they likely have little or no financial value and it’s safe to assume they serve no practical purpose as well. Once clutter has been cleared out, prevent more of it from accumulating by making a conscious effort to discard items once

they no longer serve any practical purpose. This includes old newspapers and magazines, as well as any other items that are likely to sit in a pile or on a shelf for months on end. Preventing the buildup of clutter reduces the amount of time you need to spend spring cleaning next year while also improving indoor air quality.

noons. Appliances forced to work harder also cost more money, and those costs can be considerable.

• Ensure appliances are working at peak efficiency. Spring cleaning is a great time to inspect appliances to make sure they are operating efficiently. Clean or replace filters on window air conditioning units. Dusty or dirty filters will force the air conditioner to work harder and use more energy to cool a room. In addition, dirty or dusty filters make units less efficient, which means rooms won’t cool as quickly on those scorching summer after-

When checking appliances, be sure to check the refrigerator as well. Refrigerators are plugged in all day long, and those that are not operating at peak efficiency can cost you a lot of money in the long run. Periodically clean the coils on the back of your refrigerator so it can operate more efficiently, saving energy and money.

Vacuum cleaners should also be inspected before each use to make sure reels are not covered in hair, which can make it nearly impossible for the machine to collect dirt and dust from the floors. • Use reusable cloths. Another way to turn spring cleaning into a more eco-friendly affair is to forgo using paper towels in favor of reusable cloths. Reusable wash cloths can be just as effective at wiping down counters as paper towels, which require more and more trees to be cut down and eventually end up in landfills. If you are feeling especially eco-friendly, you can go the extra mile and create your own reusable cleaning cloths out of old clothes or linens, saving you money and making use of items that might otherwise have been headed straight for a landfill. Spring cleaning can rejuvenate a home after a long winter. Emphasizing eco-friendly techniques when cleaning can ensure your home’s revival is as beneficial to the environment as it is to the home’s inhabitants.

Spring Home Improvement Have A Smelly Fireplace? After a long season of use, fireplaces need to be cleaned. Many homeowners think this is a job that can be put off until the fall, but spring is an ideal season to have the chimney and flue cleaned and inspected. One reason to include scrubbing the chimney as part of spring cleaning is to cut down on odor. After using a fireplace, a buildup of creosote forms in the chimney. As the weather gets warmer, creosote deposits can start to smell sour and that odor will seep into the home. In addition, moisture can mix with the creosote and start to degrade the flue liner, necessitating costly repairs. The sooner a chimney and flue are cleaned the better. A chimney sweep can do a thorough job of scrubbing down the chimney and fireplace and ensuring that everything will be in working order come next season.
