Kanabec Broadband Initiative (KBI) Survey The Kanabec Broadband Initiative (KBI), an ad hoc group of community organizations that recognize the importance of broadband to the economic competitiveness of Kanabec County, is currently developing plans for a tele-work center (also known as tele-commuting center) to be located in downtown Mora. In order to gauge public interest and usage, KBI is asking community members to participate in a brief survey. Please go to: http://www.kanabecbroadband.org/survey to complete the survey online. If you prefer, completed surveys can be dropped off or mailed to Mora City Hall, 101 Lake Street S., Mora, MN 55051, or e-mailed to beth.thorp@cityofmora.com. 4.For what purposes would you use the telework center? Safety essential when visiting a farm The nursery rhyme does not state, “Old MacDonald had a farm and on this farm there was a bunch of dangerous things.” But maybe it should? Farmers perform an essential service, providing food and other products that consumers commonly take for granted. The inner workings of a farm are something to treat with respect. Most of the families who live and work on a farm understand the potential hazards of such an environment. However, individuals visiting a farm may be unaware of these dangers. Understanding farm safety helps keep everyone safe. According to the organization Kids Health, the age groups at greatest risk for injury on farms are children ages 3 to 4 and teenagers ages 13 to 14. Most injuries can be prevented, though, with a little education and precautionary measures.
Machinery There are many different forms of machinery on a farm to help keep it working efficiently. These items can pose serious safety risks. Although tractors are the type of farm equipment that causes the most injuries, some adults still think it is safe to allow children to ride along. Injuries that may result from farm
machinery include pinching of clothing or parts of the body, where a person may become trapped in the gears or components of equipment; cuts from equipment that shears crops; bruising or cuts from projectiles thrown by mowers or other field equipment; and crushing or trapping injuries from machinery that falls or tips over.
Animals Part of the excitement of visiting a farm is seeing and petting the animals. Although many animals may be docile and domesticated, they can still be unpredictable. Animals that are startled by yelling or loud noises also may become restless and dangerous. Children should understand that animals may unintentionally cause injuries. It may be in a horse’s defense mechanism to kick when it is scared. To avoid such injuries, never approach animals from behind. Also, when baby animals are present, a female may be protective of her brood and go on the defensive. Another inadvertent injury that may occur is from bacteria or viruses from the animals. Animal feces may contain bacteria, and there may be other microorganisms on the animals themselves. It is a smart idea to always wash your hands after handling a farm
Purina Dealer
animal to prevent the spread of disease. Here are some other precautions that can be taken when visiting a farm. * Don’t allow children to wander around unsupervised. * Rides on farm equipment should be discouraged. * Before starting machinery, operators should locate children and other guests and clear them from the work area. * Don’t allow children near machinery. * Children under the age of 16 should not be allowed to operate any farm vehicles. * Watch for hand tools or other equipment, and keep children away from them. * Do not touch animals unless a farm worker allows it. Then follow his or her instructions. * Don’t provoke farm animals or attempt to startle them. * Supervise children around ponds, feeding troughs or manure lagoons. It only takes a few inches of water to pose a drowning risk. Farms are interesting places to visit, especially for children. Safety should always be a priority when visiting a farm.

A Visit from Captain America
Miss Faver’s class had a special visitor come into their class to talk about real heroes in the world. Who better to talk about this topic than… Captain America! He talked with the kids about fictional heroes and the ones that are real. The men and women who fight for our country along with policemen and firemen, were recognized during this visit. Miss Faver’s class was able to share heroes in their lives. We thank you Captain America for expanding our thoughts on heroes and putting the real ones in the spotlight.

In May the seventh-grade American History classes had a field trip without leaving the fourth floor of the high school thanks to new technology and the East Central Minnesota Educational Cable Cooperative (ECMECC). The interactive tour of the Minnesota History Center’s (MHC) Dred Scott exhibit allowed educators from MHC to teach the Minnesota connection to the infamous 1857 Dred Scott Supreme Court decision. Students used their iPads to interact directly with the MHC educators and learn how the Supreme Court changed the course of history. Seventh-grade history teacher, Joy Whitbred, believes in the use of technology to reach the students. “The hands-on use of technology added immensely to the learning experience and we were able to teach it in a way never taught here before.” The students were able to use their individual iPads to answer questions, complete surveys and to see original content like maps or documents. The virtual field trip provided exciting new information about the United States Supreme Court decision that defined AfricanAmerican slaves as property and not human beings. The decisions spurred America toward the Civil War. Students learned that Dred Scott, an African-American slave, spent time at Fort Snelling near Minneapolis and that this area was part of the Wisconsin Territory at that time. “The event fit perfectly into the curriculum,” said Jay Blake, seventh-grade student teacher. “I know the kids enjoyed using their iPads with the teacher from the History Center.” Blake hopes to take advantage of this type of technology again. Educator, Patty Ennis, uses technology in her seventh-grade classroom. “Technology helps keep the students connected to new educational experiences that they may not have otherwise had. It allows us to conduct field trips without leaving the school building,” Seventh-grade students give the event a positive review. Addie Ness agrees, “I liked how we used the iPads to go to their site and respond to his questions and not just watch a lecture.” Karl Schultz liked the experience, too, “I liked how we all got to share our input to the questions. We should do this more often.” The East Central Minnesota Education Cable Cooperative is a consortium of thirteen (13) school districts and a technical college utilizing two-way interactive television to expand educational opportunities for students and community members in East Central Minnesota. ECMECC has provided other virtual classroom settings for music lessons at Mora High School, and numerous educational events at Trailview Elementary School within District 332.

BETTY A. HOLMER Betty Ann Holmer of the Grasston area died on Saturday, May 10, 2014 at the Cambridge Medical Center. She was 79 years old. She was born on May 23, 1934 to Richard and Eleanor (Dalluge) Kottke in Osseo. She was the youngest of five children. At the young age of 9, she and her sister, Myrtle, began playing their Hawaiian guitars. That was the beginning of her lifetime career in music. At the age of 15, she asked Jesus into her heart and she followed Him the rest of her days. She was funny, friendly and beautiful which earned her the title of homecoming queen before graduating from Osseo High School in 1952. She met and fell in love with the “crooner” of her life, Jack, and they were united in marriage on Feb. 16, 1954. They shared their love and music for over 60 years. They moved “to the country” near Grasston in 1961 where they raised their two daughters and eventually their 10 grandchildren. She was one of the first female steel guitar pickers in Minnesota and she played in several different bands. She backed up Nashville
stars at the Flame Café, played in an all-girl band, adopted several musicians as her own kids, and eventually entertained with her family band. Many people still remember the names - Jack & Betty in the Country, The JB Sound and finally Laura Jennelle and the JB Sound. In the later years, she played in church and occasionally played with the family band – 5 ‘til Sunrise. It is anticipated that when Jesus put out the help wanted ad for a steel guitar picker, Betty said, “Pick me” and He did. She entered the heavenly band with her steel guitar when Jesus took her home. She was preceed in death by parents, Richard and Eleanor (Dalluge) Kottke; brothers, Wallace and Kenneth Kottke; sister, Nora Johnson and her stillborn son. She is survived by husband, John Holmer; daughters, Patrice (John) DeGray and Laura (Tom) Martin; grandchildren, Christopher (Ashley) DeGray, Bobby (Sandy) DeGray, Gerald DeGray, Rebecca DeGray, Rachel DeGray, Sarah DeGray, Angela DeGray, Eric (Ashley) Martin, Julie (Brett) Anderson, and Amanda (Christian) Cummings; great-granddaughter, Adyson Betts; sister, Myrtle Orgon; sistersin-law, Florence Swensen and Patricia Holmer; many nieces, nephews, friends, neighbors and her dog, Tic Toc. Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 15 at the Henriette Community Church, Henriette. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Burial in the Royalton Memorial Cemetery.
