OPEN HOUSE INSPECTION: Wednesday, July 23rd, 2014 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM This is a move in ready 3-bedroom, 2-bath home that has been completely remolded. Responsible Maintenance versus Abandonment: You Decide KCRE has been accused of spreading misinformation. After listening to the School Board’s data and information, attending many of their meetings, and doing our own research we have come to the conclusion that we do not need to build more schools, if the buildings are maintained in a timely and responsible manner. Are we being responsible stewards by teaching our children not to live in a throwaway society? Is it all right to continue to deficit spend and raise taxes to fund unneeded buildings? KCRE has two licensed engineers, a retired licensed contractor, a licensed building contractor, and a retired firefighter on our leadership committee. We have actually built buildings and we believe the Fairview School Building has a good, useful life and it would not take a great deal of money to upgrade it and repair it. I suppose you could call this OUR bias. Sensible discussion has been suggested. When and where are we supposed to have these logical, sensible discussions? Surely, not at the School Board meetings: public input is limited to 3 minutes per person twice during each meeting; meetings during which discussion and decision-making do not take place. The recent community Task Force selected by the School Board met four times and heard only from the School Board and Johnson Controls, using the same data used in the 2012 referendum. I personally spoke to four Task Force members myself. No vote was taken by the 14 members We have tried to obtain information on maintenance and spending many times over the last two years from Superintendent Schultz. We encounter many obstacles. Some of the information we were able to obtain was from the Minnesota Department of Education, some from the School Board, some from Johnson Controls. • Johnson Controls was rehired to engineer, design and market the upcoming referendum (at a cost of $41,000) abandoning Fairview and building a large addition to Trailview, using the same figures from the 2012 referendum. The figures used to justify the abandonment were based on opinions, estimates and overlaps, not actual bids. Buildings do not wear out in 20 to 30 years; they do require responsible maintenance. • These Johnson Control costs and estimates were marked up 28 percent (10% contingencies; 18% soft costs i.e., project management, permits). This is much higher than an actual bid as a good bid would include contingencies. • The Mora Schools ending Fund Balance as of 5/31/2014 is $4,856,162. The Minnesota Department of Education website shows for 2010-2011, 2011-2012, and 2012-2013 the District Ending Fund Balance grew by more than $2,000,000.* We also found that during the same period, the Deferred Maintenance Fund grew to over $600,000. Why has the School District slowed down their spending on maintenance. • We also found from the Minnesota Department of Education that Mora Schools rank in the lower one-third of the State. Do we need to spend money on new buildings, or educational investments? The School Board will be asking for $18.4 million, plus interest, to support the Bond of about $8,778,750 for a total of $27,178,705 (approximately) over 20 years. Visit Fairview School, evaluate all the information and see if you think this is a wise use of your money. *Actual amount was $2,492,400 as per Minnesota Department of Education 11/12/2012 As you know we are a taxpayer advocate group and do not have access to large amounts of public money (your money), as the School Board does. THANK YOU We would like to thank all the businesses and individuals who gave donations so generously to the Tim Tomlinson benefit. The list is so long it would take a full page ad to name them all. We are truly humbled and grateful to live in such a great community that takes care of its own. An additional huge thanks to our friends, family and neighbors who organized the benefit. It goes without saying we love you all and think you are the best. A special shout out to the Crystal, our favorite place to eat and hang out, for all their help and donations to the benefit as well. The auction was a great success thanks to a great auctioneer and his staff. We feel blessed, loved and so thankful. You all have made Tim’s recovery journey so much easier to handle, not just with donations but with the words of encouragement, prayers and just being there to shake Tim’s hand. Love and God bless. IN MEMORY RONALD W. SOUTHWICK SEPT. 3, 1940 - JULY 12, 2013 We thought of you with love today But that is nothing new. We thought of you yesterday, And the day before that too. We think of you in silence. We often speak your name. All we have are memories And your picture in a frame. Your memory is our keepsake, With which we’ll never part. God has you in His keeping, We have your forever in our hearts. We miss you so very much. The family of Ronald Southwick
recycle. He never shirked a task. He loved to fish, and he also loved children of all ages. While in Mora he was employed at Serenity Manor as their maintenance man and he worked at Family Pathways Teen Center. He helped remodel their building and the youth of Family Pathways loved him. That is where he acquired the nickname “Popeye.” Greg’s love of his life was Carol Shore. He was a faithful partner to her for three years. Greg also had a servant’s heart. He loved to care for children and people who were in need of his services. Harleene “Jody” Stoffel and her husband, Drew, were two of those special people that he cared for in the last few years. He was a helper, co-worker, and dear friend to her. Greg was preceded in death by his parents (Emmett and Mary), his sister (Althea), his nephew (Terry James Bailey) and the love of his life, Carol Shore. He is survived by one brother, Frank (Linda); two sisters, Virginia Bailey (Donald) and Roxanne Stromquist; many nieces and nephews, and great nieces. Cremation services were done by Rock-Ingebrand Funeral Home in Braham. Burial was at Grass Lake Mission Cemetery in Grasston. There will be a potblessing, Memorial Service on Sunday, July 13, 2014 at 1 p.m. located at Kanabec History Center, Mora.
