Virgil Daniel Salmonson suffered a stroke on June 30, 2012 and died at the VA Home in St. Cloud on Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2012. He was 90 years old. He was born in Mora to William and Esther (Lindquist) Salmonson on Dec. 22, 1921. Except for six years as a young child in Minneapolis, he spent his entire life in Knife Lake Township, Kanabec County. He attended Willard Country School. He served in the U.S. Air Force during WWII from 1942 to 1945. With an overseas departure scheduled, his lovely girlfriend, Delores (Dee) Norberg, traveled to visit him in Mountain Home, Idaho. It was during this visit, on Feb. 11, 1944 that the couple was united in marriage. They enjoyed a wonderful 66 years of marriage. Upon his return from the war, they purchased a farm in Knife Lake Township where their three sons were born, Stefan Virgil in 1950, David Mark in 1954 and Brian Lee in 1959. Along with farming, Virgil was an electrician with Kanabec Electric Company for many years. He also was employed by Kanabec County Co-op Oil Association and ASCS. He loved the Lord and applied Christian principles in every aspect of his life. He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church since 1969, serving as a trustee, deacon and Sunday School superintendent for many years and in many other capacities. Prior to 1969, he was an active member of Hillman Baptist Church. He had a zest for life and was interested in many activities. His hobbies included photography and woodworking. He was known for his Mora Klocka that stands tall in downtown Mora and for the many Swedish clocks he has made, given away and sold across the country. He took pride in his work and

Sept. 4, 2008 hobbies and he passed his strong work ethic and many of his skills along to his sons. Throughout his life he volunteered his services by participating in many organizations including: Dala Heritage Club, Knife Lake Township Board, Mora History Center, Mora Auxiliary Police Force, Planning Commission, Conservation Club and MN Association of Cooperatives Board. He was Kanabec County Senior Citizen of the Year for 1996. He was also a Vasaloppet landowner and volunteer. He and his wife loved exploring the country that God created. They visited many countries during their younger years but were always drawn back to the Scandinavian countries and developed warm relationships with family members there and renewed family ties. Because of their Scandinavian heritage and membership in various Scandinavian organizations, foreign visitors were guests in their home on many occasions. The loss of his beloved wife, Dee, in October 2010 was a very emotional and difficult time for him. He bounced back and remained involved and interested in life and the lives of his family. He had the wonderful opportunity in April of 2012 to travel to Washington D.C., on the Honor Flight for Veterans. It was a special day for him and for son Dave, who accompanied him on the trip. He was a strong and steady rock in the community and for his family. His joy, welcoming hug, gift of gab, sense of humor and loving support will be greatly missed. God bless his memory to our souls. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Dee. He is survived by sons, Stefan (Jolene) of Mora, David (Shari) of Mora and Brian (Kathy) of East Bethel; grandchildren, ReGina (Rob) Clapp, Shane Salmonson, Maggie Jo Jindra, Lance Salmonson, Jenna (Jeff) Holmseth, Derek (Amber) Douglas, Keri Salmonson, Darren Douglas, Dannen Kroschel and Tia Kroschel; great-grandchildren, Ayva Douglas, Carter and Braden Holmseth; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral services were held on Saturday, Aug. 25, 2012 at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Mora. Rev. Mike Herzog officiated. Music was provided by Carolyn Diamond, Nicole Anderson, Gene and Jan Elvehjem.

Special Education Evaluations for Home-Schooled or Private-School Students In response to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA 2004) Minnesota School Districts must demonstrate that “all children with disabilities, including children with disabilities attending private schools, regardless of the severity of their disabilities, and who are in need of special education and related services, are identified, located and evaluated.” This responsibility extends to children with disabilities who are educated at home or in nonpublic schools. Upon request, your local public school will provide information to concerned parents on specific disabilities including information about the educational or behavioral characteristics of each disability. Parents who believe their child may indeed have a disability may request information on how to arrange for an evaluation through the district’s special education staff. Parents of students who are evaluated and are found to be eligible for special education services will become part of a team, which will develop, implement and monitor the effectiveness of a Service Plan to meet the identified needs of their children. If you have questions or would like to receive information about specific disabilities or evaluation, please contact the principal of the school building your child would be attending if he/she was enrolled in public school. Your school district is committed to success for all learners.

Notice to all Independent School District 332 Community Members: School safety is both a moral responsibility and a legal obligation to students, teachers and other school staff. The State of Minnesota and the Federal Government have legislated mandates regarding school safety that all schools must implement and uphold. While the implementation and obedience to the statutes does not guarantee a safe school, a combination of prevention efforts in addressing school climate, planning and facilities will assist in creating a safer school environment. These mandates will be sent home with students the first week of school; they are also accessible on the District website at www.mora.k12.mn.us or available upon request at the District Office.

THANK YOU I want to thank everyone for all the prayers, get well wishes and cards I received during my recent hospitalization and during my recovery at home. God bless you all. Bev Oien THANK YOU I would like to thank friends, neighbors and family for their guidance and support during my mom’s (Shirley Erickson) illness and after her passing. My mother was always there for me and was truly my best friend. I appreciate all who expressed concern and sympathy and offered to help me at home. Special thanks to my aunt, Eunice Hinde, and cousin, Barbara Hedberg, for planning and making the funeral arrangements and their companionship and support. Also thanks to Cindy Onasch, Mary Cox and Janet Stromberg, caregivers for my mom at home, for the wonderful care they gave my mom and for trips to North Memorial Hospital. Thanks to Mary and Don Olson for the use of their wheelchair van so my mom could go home; to Pastor Dean Oelfke for his visits with my mom and for his guidance; to Mike Ingebrand and his staff for the exceptional service; to Rick Martens for his songs which my mom would have loved; to the pallbearers; and to the Calvary Lutheran ladies for the delicious lunch after the service. This is truly the most difficult time of my life as I not only lost my mom, I also lost my special friend of 26 years, Vern Hinze during the same week. I miss both so very much. Eileen Oman
