Modernize with a frameless glass shower enclosure More homeowners are looking to transform their bathrooms into luxurious, relaxing retreats that feature the looks and amenities of an upscale spa. One way to upgrade the appearance of a bath -- and to lessen the burden of maintaining it -- is to install a frameless shower enclosure. The biggest advantage associated with frameless shower enclosures is that they can add to the overall value of your home if they’re done right. Here are some additional reasons to consider a frameless shower for your new or remodeled bath. * They’re fashionable. Frameless shower enclosures open a world of possibilities because they perfectly complement durable, high-style surfaces used in the bath such as tile, marble and granite. They also provide a great way to show off distinctive shower heads, faucets and fixtures. Finally, because of their openness and transparency, frameless shower enclosures can make your bath feel bigger than it really is. * They’re versatile. Frameless doors can be designed to fit any space, making them ideal for bathrooms large and small. And they don’t have to be boxy -- frameless shower enclosures can be circular, oval or triangular. Even standard square or rectangular enclosures can be dressed up with an artfully bowed, patterned or etched glass door. * They’re durable. Frameless shower enclosures look elegant, but one of their most redeeming qualities is toughness. Standard shower glasses can range in thickness from 3/8 inch to 1/2 inch, which makes them sturdy, structurally sound and safe. Watertight seals prevent leakage, and because there is little to no metal used in frameless enclosures, homeowners never have to worry about replacing corroded parts. * They’re easy to live with. Let’s face it: we all want to live in our homes for as long as we can. Frameless shower enclosures are a great way to let your home age with you because the entry can be leveled with the floor to create easy access as you become older and less mobile. And frameless glass shower enclosures don’t become passe -- they offer a great way to meld timeless style with ageless accommodation. * They’re easy to clean. With frameless shower enclosures, there are fewer nooks and crannies where dirt and grime can accumulate, making them easier to clean than other shower styles. CLIP & SAVE
How to close your pool for the season
As the leaves begin to change color and the air starts to grow a little more crisp, homeowners turn their attention to winterizing their pools. The goal is to begin the work early on so that you’re not facing the hassle of leaves all over the ground or in the pool. Many times, closing the pool requires a team effort, so enlist the help of a spouse, friend or family member before beginning the process. The first thing that is essential to winterizing the pool is having all of your equipment ready. Have all tools, winterizing chemicals and water plugs at the ready. Although inground pools and above-ground ones have similar winterizing steps, there are a few differences between the two and it is important to be aware of the differences. Thoroughly vacuum the bottom of the pool and clean the walls. You want to remove as much organic material, such as algae and dead insects, as possible prior to covering the pool so that there is a higher propensity the water will be crystal clear next spring or summer when you reopen the pool. Once the pool has been vacuumed and cleaned, backwash the filter to remove any excess residue. Remove plugs or open drain ports on the filter and let all of the water flow out of the filter. Give the filter components, including skimmer baskets, a good rinse with water and allow them to dry. Next, disconnect the pool’s pump and filter. Everything should be totally drained of any water. With an above-ground pool, remove intake and output hoses and drain. For inground pools, use an air compressor or a shop vacuum to blow out any residual water from the return pipes, and then promptly plug up the ports.

It is also possible to drain the pool water level below the skimmer level. Put duct tape or use some other blockage method on all exposed pipes or openings to the pools to prevent anything from getting inside -- this includes any insects and rodents looking for places to set up winter camp. The pump should be moved into a garage or shed. Do so with the filter if you have room in order to better safeguard the equipment. Homeowners should also test the pool water chemistry and adjust the pH, calcium hardness and total alkalinity according to recommended levels. Then prepare to add the desired mix of chemicals to the pool to sanitize it for the season. Most people use a combination of algaecide and chlorine as their winterizing chemicals. Raise the chlorine to shock level -- much higher than the recommended level for when the pool is running. Thoroughly mix granulated chemicals to prevent them from settling on the liner and causing stains. The cover should be placed on the pool and properly secured. This is where an extra body comes in handy so that the cover can be maneuvered easily. In above ground pools, an inflated pillow is often used to alleviate ice expansion and prevent the walls of the pool from splitting. It is not to keep rainwater from accumulating on the top of the cover. Store all of the pool equipment for the winter season, and during the cold weather, periodically check the cover, air pillow and water tubes for any damage.

How to Remove Stains from Concrete
Garage floors take a lot of abuse, and concrete stains are one result. Dirt, oil and grease are just some of the troublesome items that can leave their mark. As with all floors in your house, the best way to avoid serious staining is with regular cleaning. When that fails, however, it is important to take action as soon as possible to remove the stain. Here are some suggestions that will work on most garage floor stains. Difficulty: Average Time Required: 30-60 minutes Here’s How: Act now. Concrete stains are common because concrete is a porous material. Liquid spills are much easier to remove before they’ve had a chance to soak in. The quicker you act, the easier it will be to remove the stain. Choose the right cleaner. Concrete stains in the garage are usually caused by dirt, oil or grease—or some unpleasant combination of all three. Most concrete cleaners are suitable for these stains, and they can be found at
you wear chemical resistant gloves. Apply the cleaner. Pour the cleaner onto the concrete stain. Scrub the area with a stiff broom or brush, working the cleaning solution into the stain as best as you can. Allow the cleaner to rest in place as directed (typically 10 to 15 minutes). Rinse the floor. Thoroughly rinse the floor with a hose, if possible, or buckets of water. Use a squeegee or push broom to remove as much water as possible from the floor. Finally, dry mop the floor. Repeat, if necessary. It is not unusual, especially with old concrete stains, to have to clean the surface several times. If you aren’t satisfied with the results, repeat the process. But this time, consider adding less water to the cleaner and leaving it on the stain a little longer. Tips: Keep the floor clean at all times. Regular sweeping and quick action on liquid spills will reduce your need for a concrete cleaner. Soak up liquid spills as soon as you notice
paint or hardware stores or at your local home improvement store. If you are removing paint, rust, mildew or some other type of stain, you will need to look for a more appropriate product. Just be sure to read the labels carefully. Spot test the cleaner. Some concrete stain removers can create stains of their own, especially on concrete that has been painted or coated with a tinted stain finish. Before tackling the bigger job, mix a little cleaner and apply it to a small, out of sight location. If it seems to cause as many problems as it was supposed to solve, try another cleaner. Prepare the surface. If the stain is still wet, soak up as much as possible with paper towels. Sweep the area, and then remove any items near the stain so that they won’t get wet when you rinse the floor. Prepare the cleaner. Mix the cleaner as instructed on the label, or use it full strength for particularly old or troublesome stains. Be sure to wear eye and skin protection (gloves, long sleeves). them. Lay a paper towel on the spill and let it absorb. Don’t rub the surface, as this will only push some of the spilled liquid into the concrete. Use kitty litter to absorb larger liquid spills. Simply cover the spill with the kitty litter, let it rest for 24 hours, then sweep. Keep a small bag of kitty litter in the garage at all times so that you can act fast. In a pinch, you can also use cornmeal to soak up the spill. Concrete stains that are still fairly new can often be removed without resorting to special concrete cleaners. Instead, first scrub the area with a common household cleaner and brush. Don’t let water sit on a concrete stain. The water will only allow the stain to soak deeper into the concrete. What You Need: Paper towel, Kitty litter, Common household cleaner, Stiff broom or brush, Concrete cleaner, Eye goggles, Protective gloves, Hose, Bucket, Mop.

8 Fall Home Improvements
As fall approaches the leaves change colors, the air cools down, and the holiday season is practically around the corner. As the seasons change, it is time to make indoor and outdoor improvements to your home. Here are some improvements that increase the value of your home, help you to prepare for the upcoming winter season, and make your home more appealing. 1. Redecorate your rooms- As fall approaches, your rooms may be a little outseasoned with bright colors and decorations. Spice up your rooms this fall by adding fall décors and colors. Warm oranges, reds, yellows, and browns always give the sense that fall is approaching. Be daring and change
from the traditional fall colors with deep purples and pinks.Buy a cranberry wreath for the door that can last the entire holiday season. Change the summer ocean candle to a pumpkin or apple spice. As the leaves change outside, your indoor décor will match perfectly. 2. Repair or Replace the Roof- Repairing or replacing your roof is a must for the upcoming winter. Curling, peeling, and eventual disintegration of roof shingles can lead to severe, permanent damage to your roof and overall house structure. The fall is a great time to work on the roof. As the weather cools down have your roof repaired or replaced so it is ready for the upcoming storms.

Your house’s hardwood floors and rugs will be a little bit cleaner every day. Get creative and paint it a fun color, add a whiteboard for guests to write on or hang pictures so people want to stop here before they enter! 7. Remodel the Kitchen- Having the entire family over this holiday season? Prepare your kitchen for the holidays this fall by remodeling it. While the kids are back at school and you are at work, it is the perfect time to remodel your kitchen. Everyone will be stunned by your new cabinets, tile and appliances they will want every holiday at your house! 8. Install Covered Gutters- Most gutters experience clogging due to leaves, cracks, wear and tear. As the colors change and leaves start to fall, save yourself a whole lot of work by installing covered gutters. When you install covered gutters on your home, water flows through the gutters while the leaves stay out. The gutter system also ensures that the drainage from your roof flows away from your home preventing future damage. All of these home improvements will help you to make the most out of your home. Being prepared for the multiple elements fall brings and the upcoming winter is one of the most important aspects in protecting the value of your home. Make your home an inviting place for all guests this fall and upcoming holiday season.

3. Install a New Front Door- Still have a draft coming in the house when all of the doors are closed? It could be time to replace your front door. Hundreds of dollars are spent on heat and air conditioning because doors are no longer properly sealing. Today’s replacement doors are created with energy efficiency in mind. With all of the elements we face in the fall from humidity, to rain, to even snow, it is vital your door can handle these elements. 4. Create a Finished Basement- Once it gets cold outside, where are you going to send the kids to play? This fall make your basement into a finished room you’ll enjoy for years. Whether a play room, office, or guest room, finishing a basement can add value to your home and can give you up to75% return on investment. And did we mention it can be a place to send the kids to play? 5. Install Skylights- As fall and winter approach, daylight is limited. Let the light in as much as possible in the colder months. Save money and install skylights as you replace your roof. Most roofers will charge up to double the price to come back and install skylights. So let the sun shine in this fall with brand new skylights. 6. Add a Mud Room- Mud, leaves, dirt and snow all come racing into your home once fall approaches. Instead of having everyone trail through your house with their dirty shoes, add a mud room for shoes and jackets.

Fall Home IMPROVEMENT
20 - ADVERTISER, SEPTEMBER 16, 2012
Prepare for fall
The end of summer, a time to get out and enjoy those precious moments of fun in the sun we have left. But while you work in that last trip to the beach, it’s important to remember to set aside time for repair projects around the house! If you don’t get to them now, you could end up regretting it when the chill of the winter sets in.
The leaky roof
What you’ll need:
Check those windows
What to do
•
Extension ladder (never use a folding ladder to work on gutters; extension ladders are much sturdier.)
•
Work gloves
1. Inspect the pipes under your home to find the ones that need insulating. (Don’t forget to inspect all pipes. If they already have insulation, it could need replacing.)
•
Garden hoe
•
High-pressure washer or hose with spray nozzle attachment
If you’ve opened and closed the windows a lot this summer, chances are they are filthy. We are not talking about the glass, but the seals! Dirt and debris can gather over the course of the summer months and prevent a tight seal from forming. This might not seem like much, but over the winter plenty of heat will escape through those gaps. Take the time to go around the house and inspect/clean each window. If you notice the weather stripping has worn down, now is the time to replace it.
What to do
You can’t afford to wait until the winter to take care of this one. A lot of leaky roofs can be fixed in an afternoon. The first thing to do is find the source of the leak. The easiest way to do this is wait until it rains because you will be able to trace the water to the original source of the leak.
Clean those gutters As long as you are up there, clean out the gutters. The winter months are not the time to be messing around on the roof. Plus, when the snow and ice come, you’ll be happy it all has a clean area to run off to.
For starters, always do the cleaning from the ladder. You do not want to be leaning over the edge of the roof with nothing between you and the edge but the ground below! Use the garden hoe to scrape the debris toward you, and then simply drop the debris into a trashcan waiting below you. Tip: The leaves in the gutter do not make good mulch!) To make certain the gutters are clean, use the washer/hose to spray down the gutters. Be sure to check the downspouts as well. If they are clogged, it won’t matter how clean the rest of the gutters are.
Fall & Winter Specials!
Winterize your pipes Ready or not, now is the time to winterize your pipes. Yes, the cold weather is months away, but it’s a lot easier to do it now! What you’ll need: •
Water pipe insulation (should be pre-split down one side)
•
Razor blade

How to winterize your lawn
Every weekend of the last few months you have spent mowing, weeding, edging, and trimming your lawn so that it will look its best. In order to ensure your lawn makes a complete recovery after winter hibernation, you may want to spend the fall taking steps to help your lawn survive the winter months ahead. Winterizing a lawn varies depending on where you live and how harsh a typical winter is. There are certain key tasks to complete before you can rest for the winter season. * Remove fallen leaves and debris. Leaf cleanup is among the tasks homeowners dread the most. Raking leaves can be arduous, but it is well worth the effort. Fallen leaves can smother the grass and lead to dead spots and decay next season. Wait until the majority of the leaves have fallen
from the trees before you begin to rake; otherwise, you could find yourself repeating the process throughout the fall. Mulched leaves can be added in small amounts to garden beds to provide rich organic material for next year’s crop of flowers. Be sure to pick up any twigs and other debris as well. Additional debris can become up trapped under snow and hinder grass growth when spring arrives. * Cut your lawn short. Unless the season is unseasonably wet and warm, your lawn shouldn’t grow too much in October and November. Continue to cut your lawn until there is no visible growth for about two weeks. It pays to give it a short cut before frost arrives so that long piles of dead grass will not smother any new growth in the spring. Also, long grass tends to bend down upon itself, trapping moisture that can lead
to fungal diseases like snow mold. * Aerate the lawn. Soil can be compacted over time, especially in yards that see heavy foot traffic. You can rent an aerator from a lawn supply store so that water and fertilizer can reach the soil. * Fertilize. Now is the time to give the lawn fresh food to overwinter and also replenish the strength of the root system. All summer long the lawn has been depleting the soil of nutrition, but autumn presents a great opportunity to strengthen those roots. Consider a slow-release formula designed for winterizing that will feed the lawn all winter long. * Edge the garden beds. Take advantage of the cooler weather and slow-growing grass to re-edge around flower beds. Even though the grass above the surface of the soil will stop growing, the roots will remain
viable and the lawn will still be sending out rhizomes and tillers to produce new grass blades in the spring. These can easily encroach on garden beds. Edge now so you will have less work to do in the spring. * Trim hedges and trees. If there are any overhanging tree branches or shrubbery blocking sunlight from reaching the lawn, cut back these areas once the foliage has thinned. Take advantage of your town’s leaf and twig pickup services. * Seed bare patches. Scour the lawn for bare patches and put down some seed in these areas. The cooler weather will enable the seeds to germinate without having to compete with weed growth. Once you have prepared your lawn for the winter you can bring in any lawn tools that need repair and have them set and packed away for the spring.
Home renovations could increase property taxes If you live in New York’s Nassau County, you are possibly paying some of the highest property taxes in the country. Nassau County residents had an average property tax bill of nearly $8,500 in 2011. Understanding property taxes is not very cut and dry. They are supposed to rise and fall with home values, but this isn’t always the case. There is roughly 80,000 pages of federal code on property taxes, and each state and town often has its own rules governing how property taxes are assessed. State and local budget cuts can raise taxes even if your home value remains the same, as will an increase of benefits for public employees. Property tax is typically the primary means that many jurisdictions raise revenue. So if your community needs money, you can probably count on it financing that need through higher property taxes. The two things that determine property taxes are the assessed value of your home and the property tax rate for where you live. In many cases, making improvements to the inside and outside of your home
can result in higher taxes on your property. Many homeowners do not think about the tax man when they are about to renovate their home. But it is important to consider that home repairs -- even planting a garden -- could lead to higher property taxes. Although the vast majority of repairs that most often affect taxes include major renovations, there are lesser known repairs that can catch even savvy homeowners by surprise. Here is a look at some of the renovations that could raise your property taxes. * Adding a room: Converting the garage into a bedroom or adding on a new bathroom will increase your home’s value and the property tax you’ll pay on the home. Although tax assessors don’t usually make surprise trips to your home to check for renovations indoors, they may peruse permits filed at the clerk’s office and then investigate. Permits are the primary way assessors learn about improvements, so much so that some homeowners look to circumvent

* Pools and outdoor structures: Changes to a home’s exterior are some of the easiest to see and document. Permanent changes outdoors, such as the installation of a shed with a concrete floor, a deck or a pool can definitely increase property taxes. * Landscaping: Hiring a professional to do your lawn and plants can result in higher taxes. It’s called “alteration of land improvement.” Repaving a driveway or adding a new cement walkway may also increase your home’s value and, subsequently, your property tax bill. * Fireplaces: The installation of a fireplace can also increase a home’s value, leading to a higher tax bill as well.

Those Who Love Me When I am gone, release me. Let me go. I have so many things to see and do. You mustn’t tie yourself to me with tears, Be happy, we had so many years. I gave you my love, and you can only guess How much you gave to me in happiness. I thank you for the love you have shown But now it’s time I traveled alone. So grieve a while for me, if grieve you must Then let your grief be comforted by trust. It’s only for a while that we must part, So bless the memories within your heart. I won’t be far away, for life goes on. So if you need me, call and I will come. Though you can’t see or touch me, I’ll be near And if you listen with your heart you’ll hear. All of my love around you soft and dear. And then, when you must come this way alone, I’ll greet you with a smile and “Welcome Home.” It’s been two years and you are still sadly missed by your family.
