The funds were allocated by the EFSNBP which is chaired by DHS/FEMA with representatives from the Salvation Army, American Red Cross, Council of Jewish Federations, Catholic Charities, National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA, and the United Way Worldwide. The Board distributes funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the country. The Kanabec Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) Board, made up of local officials and representatives of service providing agencies, will determine how funds awarded to Kanabec County will be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by local service agencies in the area. A meeting of the Kanabec County Local EFSP Board will be held on November 21, 2013, at 2pm at Lakes and Pines Community Action Council, Inc. at 1700 Maple Avenue East in Mora, MN. The Kanabec EFSP Board is responsible for recommending agencies to receive these funds and any additional funds made available under this phase of the program. Under the terms of the grant from the National Board, local agencies chosen to receive funds must: 1) be private voluntary non-profits or units of government, 2) be eligible to receive Federal funds, 2)have an accounting system, 4) practice nondiscrimination, 5) have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs, and 6) if they are a private voluntary organization, have a voluntary board. Qualifying agencies are urged to apply. In past years funds were awarded to local food shelves, Catholic Charities Senior Dining, Soup for the Soul, New Pathways, The Refuge and Lakes and Pines. Agencies or organizations wishing to apply for a portion of these funds must submit and application no later than 4:00 pm on November 20, 2013. The application form can be found at www.lakesandpines.org or call Lakes & Pines 1-800-832-6082, ext 119 to have an application sent to you. No late applications will be accepted. Requests for funding should be submitted to Kanabec County Local Board c/o Dawn Besemann, Lakes and Pines CAC,Inc., 1700 Maple Avenue East, Mora, MN 55051. Special accommodations for people with disabilities will be made for meeting arrangements and application process by prior request. For more information call 320/679-1800, extension 119.

Today, there are more than 153,000 registered bidders. “There’s a distinct advantage to online auctions and that is there is an unlimited number of people who can see and bid on your items,” said Auction Manager Kim Johnson.

Duane Helmbreckt Auto Sales General Manager

Kim said they have many bidders registered within Minnesota and the surrounding states, but have sold to buyers as far away as Connecticut, Kentucky and Canada. Sellers can either bring their items to Five Star Auctions for safe storage or items can be stored at their property until they are sold. Kim works with sellers to take photos, develop accurate product descriptions, uploads items to the online auction and advertises for the auctions to ensure the maximum number of bidders view the items. You can be sure that Kim is working for you. She said that the staff at Five Star Auto Sales has learned what sort of items and what kind of descriptions encourage sales on K-Bid. If Kim thinks an item won’t do well at the auction simply because the environment isn’t right or if it could be sold for more in a different format, she will say so. That type of honesty is what makes her customers loyal. “Our job is to make sure people see your items,” said Kim. “We work hard to be honest and up-front with our clients. We want customers to get more money than they expect, that way everybody’s happy.” And after an item sells at auction, the seller can expect to receive their check within two weeks of the auction closing date. The folks over at Five Star Auto Sales have sold items such as: Snowmobiles, Motorcycles, Lawn/Garden, ATVs, Boats, Trailers, Vehicles, Collectibles, Antiques, Coins, Jewelry and Real Estate.

Mora Public Schools

S2S College History Visiting Speaker

NOVEMBER 2013 www.mora.k12.mn.us

Junior High School Play A Success

Mrs. Whitbred’s S2S College History class had the opportunity to have Dr. Peter Nayenga from SCSU come to my class on October 11th to enhance our Genocide unit. He is my mentor for teaching my college history class here for juniors and seniors. Dr. Nayenga is currently in his last year as head of the History Department at SCSU and loves coming to visit the high schools in which SCSU is partnered with. He gave a lecture on “The Rise of Idi Amin; a Modern day Dictator 1971-1979” The students greatly enjoyed hearing his lecture and visiting with him.

Engineering With Robotics

Mora High School’s new “Engineering with Robotics” class is up and running with much success so far this school year. Within this class students engineer and design smaller VEX remote controlled robots to play different engineering games in the classroom. We just finished our first design challenge gamed called “Swept Away” and are now designing different robots to play the new “Zombie Hunter” design challenge. For this game students have to design two robots, a transport robot and a “gun” robot, that can drive using a wireless camera and shoot different zombie targets using a small toy gun. There are no plans or drawings for these challenges, students must come up with the designs within their own “Engineering Group.” It is exciting to watch the students get excited about each design challenge and to watch them design and engineer a real working robot that can play a really cool game. If anyone in the community in interested in becoming a mentor or sponsor to our Robotics team please give Mr. Almos a call at Mora High School.

Members of the Students Against Destructive Decisions group at Mora High School celebrated Red Ribbon Week October 28-November 1. They hosted an afterschool ice cream party for all students and staff and sponsored a daily trivia contest and a door decorating contest. Mr. Szoka’s and Mrs. Ennis’s first hour classes won the trivia contest by answering every question correctly. Mr. Rossow’s 7th hour class won the door decorating contest due to his use of a fog machine and other “special effects.” The goal of Red Ribbon Week is to raise awareness of substance abuse issues and to encourage students to make healthy decisions. The members of SADD are excited to continue their efforts and will be working closely with members of the Substance Abuse Coalition of Kanabec County (SACK) to organize school-based and community-wide efforts. If you have a student who would like to join SADD, he/she should connect with the SADD Advisor, Mrs. Rossow. She can be found in the high school counseling office.

The junior high play, sponsored by Mora Community Education, was performed on October 25th and 26th. Over 40 Mora students were involved on stage or behind the scenes. The play was titled Night of the Living Beauty Pageant, and the students were wonderful. Many people in attendance said it was incredibly funny and well done. Directors Lynn Headington and Patty Eustice were very proud of the students’ hard work and dedication to the program. This program has grown a lot over the years and continues to grow in numbers. The senior high play performs November 14th, 15th, and 16th. The play is titled You Can’t Take it With You. Showtimes are 7:30 on Nov. 14th and 15th and 2pm on the 16th. Come support theater arts!

Mora High School Staff Celebrate College Day

Mora High School staff designated Friday, Oct. 11 as College Apparel Day. Staff wore college shirts/sweatshirts/jerseys that represented the various schools they attended to receive degrees. In addition, staff posted signs indicating schools they had attended and discussed their personal educational path with their classes. This activity was part of an initiative in Minnesota called “College Knowledge Month”. All MHS Juniors and Seniors were given the opportunity to update their Naviance (web-based career exploration tool) accounts during the week of Oct. 21-25. Seniors were also encouraged to do their college applications on-line during FREE COLLEGE APPLICATION WEEK ( Oct. 25-31).

Fall Fest Corn Bin Fun Mustangs Help Out

On October 29th Mora Early Childhood Family Education held it’s 3rd annual Fall Fest Event at the Fairview Elementary School. We had over 160 children and parents attend the event. One of the most popular areas was the corn bin. Children enjoyed digging in the corn and filling their buckets.

Players from the Mustangs baseball program provided a community service on Sunday, October 27 by assisting Family Pathways with cleanup at box city held at the Isanti County fairgrounds in Cambridge. Participants from surrounding communities helped raise awareness about homelessness in east central Minnesota by decorating boxes and spending the night in them simulating what it would be like to be homeless.

For a list of Community Education offerings, please visit the Mora School Website at www.mora.k12.mn.us and click on Community Education (under News/Events & Community) or go to the Webstore. If questions, please call (320) 679-6200.

Thank you from the Hwy. 61 Film Festival The Highway 61 Film Festival and “Photos on Buildings” were two great arts events that entered their third year on Oct. 4-6, 2013. The Highway 61 Film Festival Committee would like to thank the many contributors who made it possible, especially Pine Center for the Arts, Dan Carlson and all staff at Danny C’s BeachRocks, Pine Technical College and PTC staff, and all the great folks at the Pine City Pioneer: Kathy Ericson, Donna Heath, Sharon Fore, Annette Krist and Wade Weber. Thank you to Donna Sandberg, who went above and beyond in delivering programs and posters. Thank you to our judges, C.J. Gustafson and Pamela Jambeck, for their thoughtful and discerning work choosing the best from among the contenders. Also, a big thanks to C.J. for turning her home into a B&B for our itinerant filmmaker friend! Thanks to Becky Schueller for her key support and Loreal Lindstrom for making the late night films possible. Thank you to Supervolunteer PJay Siltanen and Red Carpet photographer Noah Sikkink, to East Central Minnesota PFLAG members Paul Oium, Paul Wilkens, Don Quaintance, Phil Schroeder and Barb Schroeder. Also, thanks to the Pine City Public Works crew for babysitting our banner - for the second year in a row! - through the windstorms of October, and to Lee’s Pro Shop for getting the battered banner repairs done so quickly. Thank you to Eric Carlisle and the Paradise Theatre for including us in their first annual “Magic of Movies” Film Festival this past April. Thanks to all the “Photos on Buildings” photographers: Judy Scholin, Cliff Odendahl, Terri Huro, Kelli Maag, C.J. Gustafson, Gene Webster and Stan Grubbs. Thank you to the owners and occupants of Pine Plaza (Journey North Church, Jim and Kandis Koppen, and John and Mary Jo Lahr) for offering a viewing location, although rainy and windy weather conditions forced “Photos” showings to the PTC indoor location. Thank you, Robert Musgrove and PTC, for being an accommodating rain site.

SNG Services Gunsmithing & Tool Sharpening Repair • Refinish • Buy & Sell • Trade • Transfer Sale of Ammunition • New & Used Firearms Large Parts & Accessories Inventory • Limited Archery Supplies SNG Services is a local company with a nationwide footprint. Owned and operated by Shawn Paul, SNG is a gunsmith service, a licensed firearms dealer and a full service tool sharpening shop. Shawn has been working in the gunsmithing field since the 80s and has honed his skill to the point that he is one of the few in the state who are able to work as a gunsmith full time. Shawn sees himself as a firearms mechanic and likens the workings of a firearm to that of a vehicle. He says that when your transmission needs to get rebuilt, you send your car to a professional; when guns need service or repair, you should seek out the same level of professionalism. As a full time, experienced professional in this field, he offers a level of excellence that can’t be found many other places. With the reputation he has built, he is often called on by firearms professionals across the country to fix and solve problems that have stumped others. Despite his nationwide reputation, Shawn is deeply embedded in the community and focuses his business on the local market, treating his customers as friends and devoting the same level of care to their firearms that he would to his own; knowing that in his field, failure can be deadly. Shawn is a local businessman who has raised his family in this community, does business here and is in Mora for the long term. He values his reputation and guarantees all of his work, saying that if it can’t be done right, it shouldn’t be done at all. If you have a gun that hasn’t been fired in a while or needs repair, bring it in to Shawn for a full cleaning, inspection and test fire. New and used firearms along with ammo and accessories are also available. If you need anything at all sharpened, from tools to kitchen knives, Shawn can handle that too. Come in as a customer and you’re likely to leave as a friend.

All Work Guaranteed! Over 30 yrs experience!

GEORGE A. WEINS George Arnold Weins died peacefully on Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013. He was 89 years old. He was born on May 5, 1924. He served his country in the U.S. Navy Seabees during WWII. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Mae Lund on Aug. 25, 1950. They raised their girls in the northeast Minneapolis Metro area. He attended Oak Hill Baptist Church in Columbia Heights with his family. After his wife Dorothy passed on he moved to Mora. He had retired from International Harvester Co. in St. Paul. He was a V.F.W. member and

a member of the UAW (United Auto Workers Union). He resided for many years in the Mora area and attended Emmanuel Baptist Church. He had a very kind next door neighbor, Charlie Ballatyne and his wife. He enjoyed fishing, was an avid reader and “wintered” in Arizona and Nevada with his daughter Ruth and her family in the mid80s and early 90s. In 2006 he moved south and lived with Jan, his third daughter. We all loved him dearly and he will be missed greatly. Now we can say, “George is truly home.” He was preceded in death by wife, Dorothy (Lund) Weins; parents, Joseph and Ida Weins; brother, Raymond Weins and uncles Ollie and Henry Gums. He is survived by daughters, Kathleen Mascia of Hayward, Calif., Ruth (Jim) Yankee of Monticello and Jan Meyer; grandchildren, Naomi Yankee, Lydia Yankee, Susanna Yankee, Abraham Yankee, Melissa Cottrell, Jeremiah Cottrell and Jordan Cottrell; great-grandson, Kason Landreth; nieces, Roxanne (Weins) Maya and Elizabeth (Brown) Egan.

Nov. 14 Cancer Support Group

DEBORAH A. MCGOVERN Deborah (Debee) Ann McGovern of Mora died on Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013 at home with family by her side. She was 60 years old. She was born on May 10, 1953 to Robert and Charlotte Stanius. She grew up in Isanti County on the family farm near Long Lake with her sister, Cheryl. She attended Long Lake Country School and went on to graduate from Cambridge High School in 1971. She loved the arts, flowers and photography; her first job was at Elaine’s Flowers in Isanti. On July 20, 1974 she was united in marriage to Chuck McGovern at Long Lake Lutheran Church. He was a classmate and they lived on Lake Francis in Isanti County. The following year she purchased the Mora Flower and Gift Shop. They moved to Mora to raise their three boys; Andrew, 31, Rob, 28, and Clint, 27. After selling the flower shop years later, she helped to run the family business and worked part-time at Oak Gallery. Between working and raising the boys she was very active at Grace Lutheran Church, teaching Sunday school, singing in the choir, serving on the church council and many other church committees. She loved to volunteer for the community. She was very active with the Mora Vasaloppet – skiing the race for many years with her boys and serving as a Kransculla. She also skied the Vasaloppet in

such a special one. For the many cards and gifts I received. For all the food the family and friends brought. I will remember this for a long time. Sincerely, Willard (Willie) Rask

THANK YOU The Pine City Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses would like to extend a sincere thank you to East Central Sanitation for their charitable donation to our recent remodel project to our Kingdom Hall. The provided roll-off dumpster and garbage service was truly appreciated throughout our renovation. It aided in our major undertaking to be clean and efficient. We would also like to thank them for their charitable garbage service they provide for our facility throughout the year - a generous kindness that does not go unnoticed. Sincerely, Pine City Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses Sweden and Japan. She believed in and supported the Mora schools by serving on the school board and the Mora Education Foundation and by her involvement in a variety of school functions. The family has many memories of trips to Mexico, Hawaii, Florida, Lake of the Woods and the family lake cabin. She also loved to travel with her girlfriends. She loved any and all things that involved her family or her friends and was always ready to help. She was very much loved by her husband and sons and will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her. We love you and miss you Debee, Chuck, Drew, Rob, Clint and Callie (dog). She was preceded in death by mother, Charlotte Stanius. She is survived by husband, Chuck of Mora; sons, Drew (Allison) of St. Louis, Mo., Rob and grandchildren, Noah and Nevaeh of Cambridge and Clint (Monica) of Isanti; father, Robert Stanius of Isanti; sister, Cheryl (Dave) Deiman and nephews, David and Will of Minneapolis; sister-in-law, Nan (Harvey) Hendrix of Talladega, Ala.; nieces and nephew, Hillary, Zane and Caitlin and many other relatives and dear friends. A memorial service was held on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013 at Grace Lutheran Church in Mora with Rev. Douglas Larson officiating. Music was provided by Jacki Peterson, Betty Smith and the Grace Lutheran church choir. Honorary urnbearer was Cathy Malecha. Readers were Carol Hushagen, Beatta Hillman and Ruth Mills. Inurnment will be at a later date at the Long Lake Community Cemetery in Isanti. Arrangements were made by the Akkerman-Ingebrand Funeral Home of Mora. Condolences may be posted at www.aifuneralhome.com.

SNOW REMOVAL POLICY 2013-2014 SEASON KANABEC COUNTY TOWNSHIPS With the advent of another Minnesota snow season comes the concern about the access to work, school, and business. The safety and convenience of the traveling public is a main concern of the township supervisors of Kanabec County. The goal of the Townships is to have all roads passable within a reasonable amount of time after a snowfall. The Supervisors do not assure a completely bare road. The traveling public is reminded to exercise caution and drive with care and have your vehicle under control at all times. The legal speed limit may not be possible at all times. SNOW REMOVAL PROCEDURES 1. Dispatching of snowplow: The town will usually not dispatch the snowplow until after the snowfall has stopped. During extended periods of snowfall, exceptions may be made. The snowplow will not be sent out in situations that may be hazardous due to restricted visibility. The snowplow will not be dispatched if the snowfall does not exceed a total of 4 (four) inches. If snowfall stops during the night or early morning hours, the plow will be dispatched at 5:00 am. Weekend plowing will be handled in a similar manner. 2. Operations: Generally, the clearing of roads will consist of three phases: 1. Making the road passable, 2, Widening the road, and 3. Cleaning up. Dependent on the situation, more than one phase may be accomplished at one time. 3. Personal Properties: A. Mail boxes and fences damaged during snow removal will be evaluated case by case. Only those properties that were properly located and installed and which were damaged by actual contact with equipment responsible to the town will be repaired at Town expense. B. Town residents are reminded that it is unlawful to plow snow from driveways onto or across public roads. Piles of snow left on or near the road can freeze into a solid mass, creating a hazardous situation for vehicles and snowplows. Accidents and damaged caused by snow piles placed in the roadway may result in liability to the property owner. Piles of snow increase the chance of drifting snow onto the roadway. C. Town residents are reminded to remove parked vehicles from town roads to assist in snow removal. D. The Town vehicles will not attempt to remove stuck vehicles from Town ditches, snow banks, or any other impediment. E. When directed by the supervisors or the sheriff ’s department, the Town will make every effort to make emergency plowing. 4. Information: The Town will be plowing roads on a rotating basis to be fair to all of the residents of the Town. For further information contact one of following members of the Town Board of Supervisors in which town you live.
