Focus Group Visits Audubon Center
Where H Wh Heroes H Have B Been M Made d by Rachel Norby This year, our boys’ cross country team* made it to State for the 10th year in a row, won the State Meet (they were State Champions for the second year in a row), and went on to place an impressive second place at the National Meet held in Kentucky. Though all of that is amazing in itself, what is even more amazing is the interaction between the high schoolers and the elementary students. This is where heroes have been made. Just before leaving to head down to the State Meet, the high school bus takes two pit stops: one at Trailview and the other at Fairview. When we stop at Trailview, the noise is almost deafening as the cross country runners walk down the halls. The Trailview students
give high fives, and some of them even have little signs made or synchronized cheers planned. When the bus goes to Fairview, the kids shyly give the runners huge hand-made, individualized posters with each runner’s name and a picture of that runner having a great race. Then they cheer as our runners make their way down the hall, in awe of the sweetness of children. On our way out to the bus, I heard one of our runners comment how he has every year’s poster up in his room over his bed, so I think it is safe to say that heroes have been made on both sides of this story. * We also had two girls, Brook Wedin and Sadie Peterson, qualify individually for the State Meet this year.
On Nov. 11, Mora Senior High Focus students were able to obtain a great educational experience at the Audubon Center of the Northwoods in Sandstone, MN. Students participated in the Survivor Program working on Communication and Team Building Skills. The students were taught the “3 Rules of survival” when challenged to build a fire with flint and metal, and to build a shelter in the woods to obtain warmth. The students walked away with valuable knowledge on basic survival skills by deciphering their wants and needs. Great job to all the students for a successful day in the woods!
MATI Group Attends We Day Cowles Center
The Mora Above the Influence (ATI) group recently attended We Day on Tuesday, Nov. 3 in Saint Paul, MN at the Xcel Energy Center. We Day is a gathering of young people to celebrate the difference they are making in their local and global communities. Students cannot buy tickets to be a part of this event as students can only get their tickets by earning them by serving their local and global communities. The gathering brought in approximately 18,000 students to hear inspirational messages from leaders such as Chelsey Clinton, Henry Winkler, and Dr. Mae Jemison. Mora Above the Influence is a group of young people that are passionate about making a difference in the lives of others through spreading awareness and serving others. One student member stated that being a part of ATI is a chance for her to help her peers by encouraging them to make positive choices. Last school year the group completed numerous awareness campaigns and service projects centered on issues such as substance abuse prevention and kindness, and their efforts helped them to earn their chance to be a part of We Day. An ATI member expressed that We Day is a great way to celebrate the group’s accomplishments, and helps her to see different perspectives of issues in our world today. This is the second year that Mora Above the Influence group
Giving Back Mora School staff donated back to the community by collecting nearly $400 for Shop with a Cop as well as collecting over 27 turkeys to donate to needy families. Thank you to Cindy Paulson, Sara Rossow, and Diane Norby for all of your coordinating efforts. Our students and staff also collected food items for Thanksgiving baskets for needy elementary families. Between Fairview and Trailview, nearly 50 families were given a Thanksgiving basket with a gift card to Coborns for the turkey. Thank you students and staff ! The high school also was busy collecting items for the community. The week before Thanksgiving, Student Council hosted its annual Turkey Drive, in which grades 7-12 participated in an attempt to fundraise money and collect food for the local Mora Food Pantry as well as the food shelf at the high school. Each grade competed against the others to see how much money and how many food items they could gather. In the selected classrooms, paper plates and feathers were given in order to make “turkeys” to represent the amount of money and food items being donated. The paper turkeys helped keep track of how many feathers each grade had earned. Any grade that reached a total of 500 combined dollars and food items won a prize for their grade. While prizes are yet to be determined, this year both the senior class and 7th graders collected at least 500 items. As a school, $1,685.15 and 414 items of food were donated.
The Cowles Center for Dance and the Performing Arts is excited to have been partnered with Fairview Elementary’s 2nd grade classes for a unique world dance movement residency experience with dancer Christopher Yaeger from Nov. 30-Dec. 7. The students in each of the 2nd grade classes shared their cultural dances with other classes at Fairview and hopefully shared their new moves at home! Students from Mr. Doschadis’ 2nd grade are shown working on their Pata Pata dance steps! This opportunity is provided through grants for the Cowles Center and support from our Mora CAPP committee.
Ag Classes has been able to attend the event, and their goal this school year is to once again earn their way to We Day through working with the school and their local community to make a difference by addressing topics such as hunger, kindness, and substance abuse prevention.
Students in the Agriculture Department are all hands on! From dissecting the invasive species Sea Lampreys, doing a taxidermy goose, creating floral arrangements to dyeing chicken embryos there is always something fun and exciting happening in the classroom!
Students Participate in e-Mentor Program Over the past five weeks Mora High School accounting students have been e-mailing back and forth with their e-Mentors who work at PricewaterhouseCoopers. PwC is an audit and assurance, consulting, and tax service that is currently the sixth ranked private industry in America based on sales. The accounting students were able to meet their e-Mentors in person on Nov. 13th at the PwC office in Minneapolis. Student Paige Gobel said “I really enjoyed participating in the e-Mentors program. At first, we were given an email of someone who worked for a big accounting firm in Minneapolis. I was not very enthused with the idea of talking to a random stranger. But, as we kept e-mailing, I began to look forward to receiving the next e-mail. My mentor, Ciara, gave me some very helpful advice from telling me her experiences to telling me options that I can pursue with accounting. I am very thankful for being able to participate in such a rewarding program. I hope that they continue this program because it was very helpful to get a perspective from someone in a way different environment than Mora.” Michael Schwinghamer, another current
accounting student said “I believe that the e-Mentors program was very beneficial. Through this experience, I learned a little bit of what it was like to be at an actual business, and I learned how they were able to run their company to be successful. I met my mentor that I had been communicating with through e-mail, and he showed me around where he worked and we talked about what his job was in the company. Overall, it was a really positive experience, and I got some personal insight on to what the future would be like in that field. I would strongly support the continuation of this program. It can help many students with a real life learning experience. It was very helpful to go on site and I hope that everyone gets this experience. Accounting students who are participating in the e-Mentors program are Paige Gobel, Emily Erickson, Isac Kelling, Kaleigh Tober, Tyler Tober, Tyler Saunders, Devon Larson, Samantha Engrav, Schae Singleton, Matthew Fackler, Michael Schwinghamer, Jake Libra, Jeremiah Mantel, Rachel Vreeland, Michael Bailey, Samantha Stone, Kevin Brockner, Kaitlin Towle, Richard LaFave, Nick Weidner, and Jared Wiener.
Bank k Tour Mora High School students get a tour of First Citizens National Bank after a unit on banking. Thank you First Citizens Bank for your time with the tour.
Boxtops The Fairview Elementary Specialists want to announce the selection of FAIRVIEW to win 3,000 box tops from the Coborns grocery contest on Facebook thanks to a nomination by a Facebook friend! The total amount of Box Tops collected for this seasons collections topped over 10,000 with the addition of the Coborn’s donation for a total of $1,000 dollars towards new arts, P.E., music, media and technology supplies and programs for the students! Please keep collecting those little box tops and sending with your student - they add up to great things!!

Call Gopher State One-Call when you plan a project! Northwest Gas has natural gas pipelines in the Ogilvie/Mora area. Please call at least 48 hours before you plan to begin any machine-assisted excavating. This includes stump grinding, topsoil stripping or any other operation where power equipment is used, regardless of digging depth. Pipelines may not be where you expect! Pipeline marking signs do not indicate a pipeline’s exact location and never can you be sure of the depth of a pipeline. A pipeline may change direction and depth rapidly in a very short distance. The only safe method of locating a pipeline is by calling Gopher State One-Call and having a Northwest employee locate it for you. After you contact Gopher State One-Call a Northwest employee will visit your work site and mark the location of our pipeline for you at no charge. If your plans change after the pipeline is marked, call Gopher State One-Call again. Do not try to guess our pipeline’s location from previous markings or it’s depth from a previous measurement.

MHS Student Led Food Shelf Says “THANK YOU” Thank you to the community as a whole for their support in our student-driven food shelf at Mora High School. Over the past few months, we have had churches, businesses, non-profit organizations, MHS student council, as well as individual students and community members donate to support our students’ well being. The food shelf is available to all students in need, and we have been able to help students with their basic needs such as food and personal hygiene products. A 9th grade student, last school year, as a school project in his world studies class decided he wanted to set up a food shelf in the HS Media Center. The student and his classmates have moved on but the vision of his dream continues. Above the Influence (ATI), a group of high school students with a passion for creating positive change in their community, have volunteered to help continue this project as part of their effort to help out their peers. We are fortunate to be a part of a community that supports our young people in many ways, and the response we have received with this project is a great example of the importance our community places on helping our young people flourish and succeed. If you would like to visit the food shelf and see what we are doing, please contact the HS Media Center at 679-6236 or if you would like to donate in any way contact the HS office at 679-6220.

was so proud of his daughter Katie when she shot her fi rst deer this season. On Sundays he enjoyed watching Vikings games with his friend, Darold. And on Monday mornings, he would often have coffee with his friend, Randee. He could often be found in the yard. He enjoyed tending to the garden and taking care of the numerous and various animals on the family hobby farm. He had a huge heart. He always said that he never wanted a horse at the farm, but when his youngest daughter asked, she got a horse. He was an amazing husband, father and “Papa.” The grandkids were his pride and joy, and everything he did was meant to be an example of love, responsibility and encouragement. He was preceded in death by infant brother, Richard; grandparents; Uncle Bill (his favorite uncle) and other relatives. He is survived by wife, Laurie; parents, Anthony and Mary Kunst; children, Chad (Stephanie), Ryan (Jessica), Kari (Joshua) and Katie; grandchildren, Kyler, Karissa and Kendra; brothers, Dennis (Cheryl) and Doug (Denise); sisters, Barbara (Gordy) Ranta, Kathy (George) Hampy and Diane (Bill) Garceau; many other relatives and friends. A funeral mass was held Saturday, Nov. 28, 2015 at St. Kathryn’s Catholic Church in Ogilvie. Burial was at St. Kathryn’s Cemetery in Ogilvie. Arrangements were made by Akkerman-Ingrebrand Funeral Home of Mora. Condolences may be posted at www.aifuneralhome.com.
