RADIOACTIVE GAS IS PERSISTENT HEALTH RISK MN DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH CONTRIBUTED Now that the pandemic has forced many people to spend more time in their homes, their potential exposure to household health hazards may be greater. This means it is more important than ever to know if your home has high levels of radon – the invisible radioactive gas found at elevated levels in many Minnesota homes. Radon is an odorless, colorless and tasteless gas that occurs naturally in Minnesota soils all over the state. The only way for residents to know if their home has radon is to test. More than 21,000 lung cancer deaths are attributed to radon each year in the United States. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. Fortunately, the risk is largely preventable through testing homes and fi xing radon problems. “Unfortunately, many people are still being exposed to high levels of radioactive radon who don’t know it. With more people working and schooling from home, it’s especially important now to test your home,” said Dan Tranter, supervisor of the Indoor Air Program at the Minnesota Department of Health. Test devices are placed in the home for 2-5 days. The best time to test is during the heating season, but testing can be

done year-round. MDH is partnering with local public health departments and other organizations to raise awareness and make test kits available to Minnesotans at low or no cost. Lists of participating health agencies and vendors can be found on the MDH website at Radon Testing. Hardware stores may also stock test kits. Licensed professionals can also conduct testing. About 40% of Minnesota homes have dangerous levels of radon. Tests should be done in the lowest level of the home that is frequently occupied. In homes found to have high radon levels, radon reduction typically involves installing a venting pipe and fan to pull the gas from under the home to the outside. This reduces the amount of radon in the home to low levels. Professionals conducting radon mitigation must be licensed by MDH, follow standards and affi x a MDH tag to the system. A list of currently licensed radon mitigation professionals can be found on the Find a Radon Mitigation Professional page on the MDH website. To learn more about radon risks, testing, mitigation and licensure in Minnesota go to the MDH website: https:// www.health.state.mn.us/communities/ environment/air/radon/ or call the MDH Indoor Air Unit at 651-201-4601 or 1-800-798-9050.

MN DEPT OF AGRIGULTURE CONTRIBUTED The Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s Rural Finance Authority is now accepting applications for a tax credit for the sale or lease of land, equipment, machinery and livestock in Minnesota by beginning farmers. To qualify, the applicant must be a Minnesota resident with the desire to start farming or who began farming in Minnesota within the past 10 years, provide positive projected earnings statements, have a net worth less than $851,000 and enroll in, or have completed an approved financial management program. The farmer cannot be directly related by blood or marriage to the person from whom he or she is buying or renting assets. The farmer must provide the majority of the labor and management of the farm. The tax credit for the sale or lease of assets can then be applied to the Minnesota income taxes of the owner of the agricultural land or other assets. Three levels of credits are available: 5% of the lesser of the sale price or fair market value of the agricultural asset up to a maximum of $32,000 10% of the gross rental income of each of the first, second and third years of a rental agreement, up to a maximum of $7,000 per year 15% of the cash equivalent of the gross rental income in each of the first, second or third year of a share rent agreement, up to a maximum of $10,000 per year The Beginning Farmer Tax Credit is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Applications must be received by Oct. 1, 2021. Interested farmers should note that they can also apply for a separate tax credit to offset the cost of a financial management program up to a maximum of $1,500 per year – for up to three years.

TRUCK LOAD INCREASES BEGIN

MN DOT CONTRIBUTED Winter load increases will begin Monday, Jan. 4, 2021 at 12:01 a.m. on unrestricted state highways in the central frost zone, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation. Frost zones can be found on the MnDOT load limits map. Winter load increases are already in effect in the north and north-central frost zones. WILLIAM C. MATTSON

William C. Mattson – a.k.a: “Mr. Bill,” “Grumpa Bill,” and “Carpenter Exceptional” – died peacefully in his home on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2021. He was blessed to live his final moments in the arms of his longtime love and fiancé, Julie Haugen. He was 73 years old. Born in Mora, to Carl and Audrey Mattson, he graduated from Mora M High School in 1965 and attended H vvocational school in Pine City. He was united in marriage to Theresa w Cox, of Pine City, in 1967. They were C bblessed with two daughters. While trained as a mechanic, he ffound his passion lied in woodworkiing. He eventually started his own sshop and took great pride in his iincredible work. Best known for his extraordinary cabinetry work, h he also crafted beautiful classic and h unique furniture, did remodeling u work, general contracted residential w construction and knew his way around most of the trades. He was generous with his time and tools, teaching his craft to many, including two of his sons-in-law. An amicable person, his compassion and kindness ran deep. He gave work to many in need of money; he opened his home to those in need of a bed; he drove his tool truck 100s of miles for those in need of help or repair. A man of few words, he chose instead to listen and be present. Consequently, he recalled the names and stories of all he met, and is remembered as a good, kind-hearted man. He enjoyed golf, complaining, sweet treats, pig roasts and TV. His chocolate-chip cookies were world class. For those who knew him, have a Nut Goodie, holler at the Minnesota Vikings, hit the links, help someone in need and talk less and listen more. That is how he would want to be honored and remembered. He will be missed by those he left behind, fiancé, Julie Haugen; daughters, Beth Mitchell, Deborah (Christopher) Thell, Jennifer (Ryan) Haferbecker and Jessica (Jon) Ferris; grandchildren, Steffan (Kara) and Alec (Denyele) Hannah; Nolan and Jonah Thell, Grady and Kaden Haferbecker and Ellie Ferris; great-granddaughter, Luna Hannah; sister, Jean McConnell; brothers, Bob Mattson, David (Alisha) Mattson and James Mattson; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and colleagues. We will have a small family gathering for him on Sunday, Jan. 10, 2021, with a bigger celebration of his life this summer.

weight tolerances. Drivers need to check with local agencies before increasing any weights on city, county and township routes. A winter weight increase permit is required to take advantage of the 10 percent weight increase on interstate highways only; a permit is not required for state trunk highways. For questions about over legal weight/size “heavy haul” trucking, call MnDOT’s Freight and Commercial Vehicle Operations - Oversize/Weight Permits, 651296-6000 or email: ofcvopermits. dot@state.mn.us. For questions about enforcement call the Minnesota Department of Public Safety - State Patrol - Commercial Vehicle Enforcement; 651-350-2000. The start and end dates for winter load increases are based on how weather is affecting roadway strength. These dates are established by monitoring roadway strength as weather conditions change. The end date for winter load increases is variable and drivers should check for updates throughout the year. All changes are made with a minimum three-day notice. For the most current information, go to MnDOT’s automated 24-hour message center at 800723-6543 for the U.S. and Canada, or 651-366-5400 for the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. Th is information is also published on the MnDOT seasonal load limits website at mndot.gov/ loadlimits. For updated road condition information, call 511 or visit 511mn.org.
