wo organizations in our area that are doing incalculable good for our community are actually two pieces of the same pie. The One More Time Stores of Mora and Isle are the primary revenue generating assets and public faces of the Seven County Senior Federation based in Mora. If the One More Time stores were just thrift stores, they would be one an incredibly successful example of that. The One More Time stores provide the communities that they serve with a continuous source of quality clothing and household goods at low cost in neat, well-organized stores. The One More Time stores also are generous in their giving. They provide clothing and goods at no cost to referred families with significant need. The agency is also quick to pitch in with donated goods when disaster strikes; for instance the recent floods in Moose Lake. The stores accept countless amounts of donated goods and pride themselves on seeing nothing goes to waste. Garments and merchandise that can be sold are made ready for the public and displayed in the stores for sale quickly after being donated. Items not suitable for sale are redirected to missions or repurposed in usable ways so that virtually nothing goes to waste. Run with nearly 100% volunteer labor, the One More Time stores provide a family environment and a support network for those giving time in the stores. These volunteer positions give many who are past their working years a place where they can contribute with purpose to the heartbeat of the Mora and Isle communities. A major source of the stores’ volunteers is the local churches that encourage members to volunteer. The stores have developed a partnership program where they are able to send monthly contributions back to partnering churches from revenue generated at the stores. All of this good that takes place in the One More Time stores happens above and beyond the goal of generating income to support the work of the Seven County Senior Federation. In large part, because of the revenue generated by One More Time stores, the Seven County Senior Federation is able to accomplish its work in a way that is 100% self-sustaining. That means that the Federation is able to advocate for seniors without being beholden to government funding or private grants in any way. For forty years, the Seven County Senior Federation has existed to advocate for senior citizens in the communities where it serves. This grassroots organization is devoted to helping its members live lives that are free of fear with dignity, independence and respect. With over 1,700 members in Kanabec, Aitkin, Carlton, Chisago, Isanti, Mille Lacs and Pine Counties, the Federation diligently executes the objectives set forward by its members at their annual meeting. Every year, specific priorities are set at the state and federal levels as to how the Federation’s resources will be deployed. Often these priorities revolve around the areas of health care, property tax relief, social security and local government aid (LGA). In addition to advocating for seniors at the state and federal levels, Seven County Senior Federation serves its members by offering assistance with Medicare or Social Security questions, help with tax preparation, member discounts at participating retailers, aid in obtaining affordable prescription drugs, defensive driving courses for those 55+, social events for members, and many other services. All of this is from a local organization that is 100% financially self-sustaining. You can support the work of the Seven County Senior Federation by shopping at the One More Time stores in Mora and Isle and by purchasing hand-crafted, recycled greeting cards at the stores. If you’re over 50 years of age and live in one of the counties served, becoming a member is simple and affordable ($12/year per person or $22/year for a household of two.) Log on to www.7CountySeniors. com or visit the office in Mora for a membership form and more details about member benefits.

Memory Care & Advanced Care

candia Senior Care’s mission is to provide care for the elderly in home settings, utilizing the latest knowledge of geriatrics, along with the traditional Scandinavian Christian values of kindness, dignity and respect for the elderly. With space for 10 residents in Isle and a home in Mora that is growing to accommodate 10 residents, the staff at Scandia House are passionate about providing a uniquely high standard of senior living for those under their care. They take pride in knowing that their residents are receiving top-of-the-line care, by loving and quali¿ed professionals in a neighborhood setting that feels like home. A Safe, Home Environment: Scandia House Assisted Living serves primarily Advanced Care and Memory Care clients. Memory Care seniors can often be a new challenge for family members because they often require supervision at all times of the day. With Wander Alert technology, the staff are able to respond quickly if one of the residents needs assistance with getting something in their room, a bed-to-chair transfer, toilet cares, an escort about the home, or simply wanting to exit the home, which could prove to be unsafe. One reason that many seniors make the transition to assisted living is that they have trouble balancing. With a nurse-call system installed throughout the homes, staff are able to place a high priority on escorting the clients from place to place. Falls can be very dangerous, so it is important to Scandia House that residents with balance issues are escorted to and from their bedrooms throughout the day. With all private bedrooms, the residents at Scandia House are able to develop a sense of their own individualized space, and they are able to bring things from home to decorate

their bedrooms and make them their own. A Scandia House residence provides three home cooked meals and two snacks each day. The staff put extra effort into making the homes comfortable and homey. Part of that is allowing plenty of Àexibility for visits from family and friends. Friends and family are encouraged to visit any time and to sit and visit for as long as they’d like with their loved ones. There is also space available for family gatherings such as birthdays and other special events.

Outstanding Staff Scandia House puts a high priority on the quality of the staff hired. The Isle and Mora locations maintain very high 24–hour staffto-client ratios. All staff members are at minimum trained as a Home Health Aid, but across the two facilities, there are three Registered Nurses and an LPN. Nurse visits at the homes are 4-5 days per week. Led by Ken Bergstrom, a U.S. Navy veteran and registered nurse with over 25 years of medical experience, the staff members are selected for having nursing home experience and certi¿cation with the state; meaning that they are able to manage the medical needs of the residents on a daily basis. Prior to opening Scandia House, Ken was the Director of Nursing at a large Skilled Nursing Facility and has built a nursing team that is well versed on the medical side of things. In addition to a high level of professional competence, Scandia House staff must also have a caring spirit and a mindset in line with the company values of kindness, dignity and respect for the elderly. The staff appreciates being able to spend time with the residents at a slower pace, sitting down with them and getting to know them. Scandinavian Christian Values – Kindness, Dignity, Respect for the Elderly When speaking with Scandia Senior Care Vice President, Becky Bergstrom, it quickly becomes obvious that the values of Scandia House are also her values. She is passionate about creating an environment that honors the men and women under Scandia House’s care. Becky emphasizes how women of the residents’ generation have expressed kindness to her over the decades in serving meals, sharing friendly conversation and giving of their time in a way that is digni¿ed and respectful. “They’re good, giving, hard-working women.” She is inspired by that generation of women and is proud to serve them with the same

The culture at Scandia House is often de¿ned by the word dignity. A question that needs to be asked often when programming activities for the residents, providing privacy and creating arrangements in the home is “how digni¿ed is this?” To whatever extent necessary, the team at Scandia House works to show respect to the elderly and treat them in a digni¿ed way. A Growing Facility – A Great Value This fall, in order to meet the growing need in the community, the Scandia House of Mora is adding four more bedrooms, expanding their living and dining area; bringing their capacity to 10 residents. IN LOVING MEMORY OF RONALD BJORKLUND Nov. 1, 1942 - Jan. 17, 2011 Softly the stars are shining, upon the precious grave; Beneath lies the one we dearly love, but who we could not save. Friends may think we have forgotten, when at times they see us smile; Little they know the heartache, that our smiles hide all the while. We mourn for him in silence, no one can see us weep; But silent tears are shed, when others are asleep. It is said time heals all sorrow, that it helps one to forget; But time has proved to us, how much we miss him yet. Forever missed by, Wife Carroll; sons David (Lara), Steven; grandchildren Todd, Eric (Becky), Chase, Ryan and Emily

Engagement Ring Shopping L ong before b f couples l stand db before f an offi fficiant and d say, “I do,” many make another pledge to each other by getting engaged and agreeing to begin a new life together. In a 2011 survey by XO Group, Inc., formerly The Knot Inc., the average engagement ring costs Americans $5,200. Canadians spend around $5,000 as well. Considering an engagement ring is typically a once-in-a-lifetime purchase, many men say the high cost is warranted and are even willing to finance the purchase or push their budgets to procure a beautiful ring. Many engagement rings feature a 1-carat center stone with some smaller stones surrounding, accounting for a 1.4 total carat weight on average. It can take a groom-tobe around three months to find his (and her) ideal ring, sometimes longer. Considering a ring is such a significant investment, it pays to have some knowledge in gem selection.

Newly Engaged? Here are the first wedding planning steps to take

A

wedding will probably be the biggest and most involved party either of you ha have ever put together—but don’t be scared! You can plan a wedding in 10 simple steps.

Enjoy Being Engaged

A Touch of Romance for Any Occasion Even just a night out on the town!

Kuehn’s Limousine...

Kiss each other a thousand times. Jump up and down saying, “We’re engaged!” Stare at the engagement ring. Take the time to write down in detail how you got engaged. Contemplate the wonderful things ahead of you. Take pictures of yourselves with the engagement ring. Kiss each other a thousand more times.

Tell Your Parents You should tell your parents of your impending nuptials before anyone else. (Unless of course, you are estranged.) Both of you should be present and ideally you will tell them in person - they’ll have a chance to see your happiness up close, look at the ring, and start talking about the wedding. Traditionally the bride’s parents know before the groom’s do, but any order is really fine. (If you’re a traditional couple, the groom may already have asked her parents for her hand in marriage.) Then share

the news with a few close friends the ones who are likely candidates for maid/matron of honor and best man, or definite attendants in some capacity.

Purchase a Journal If You Don’t Already Have One This will be a time of 10,000 moments you won’t want to forget, as well as some frustrating times that you’ll need to vent about, and not necessarily to your partner. The journal you keep while planning your wedding will not only help you through this time, but it will be something you cherish for the rest of your life. If you’re Internet-savvy kinds of folks, you may also consider doing this journaling online at a site such as Livejournal, tumblr or your own blog.

Announce Your Engagement Tell everyone the good news! There are many ways of doing this, and no way is more correct or better than another. Consider:

• Mailing announcements to your family and friends • Creating a wedding website

Set the Date One of the most important decisions you will make as you plan your wedding. Not only will it be the first question everyone will ask you, but you’d be surprised how difficult it will be to make any progress on planning your wedding without knowing the date.

Set the Tone of Your Event This is the time to decide if you’re having a formal wedding, a casual affair, or a theme wedding. It’s also the time to decide on having a religious or secular ceremony. In short, you need to decide what you want your wedding to feel like. A good way to begin is to sit down with your partner and do some free writing about your ideal wedding. Look at the adjectives that each of you write and use them as a starting point.

Wedding Planning Steps

My Total Budget ___________

continued

Expenses

Set the Budget

Start off by using a printable wedding budget worksheet. Look at your finances and figure out how much you already have in savings, and how much you can save each month.

Talk to each of your parents and ask them if they’d like to contribute to your wedding, and either how much they’d like to give you, or what specific things they’d like to pay for.

Lastly, decide how much you feel comfortable going into debt. I strongly advise couples to avoid debt as much as possible. Since married couples fight about money more than anything else, why start marriage with debt on your backs? At this time you may consider opening a new credit card just for the wedding that will earn you airline miles, cash back, or other incentives.

It’s a good way for you to keep track of wedding expenses, and can help you pay for your honeymoon. Just try to pay it off in full each month.

Choose Your Attendants As your attendants do a lot more than just stand next to you on the day of the wedding, now is the time to get them involved. While some couples opt not to have any attendants at all, especially if they’re having a casual event, most choose between two and 12 members of the bridal party. If they live nearby, its nice to ask someone in person, but a phone call is fine for those who live far away.

Start Looking for Venues for Ceremony and Reception Many venues are booked a year in advance, so the further in advance you start looking, the more likely you are to get the time, date, and cost that you’ve planned for.

Get Support The successful bride and groom do not plan their wedding alone - they get

help! This may be from professionals, respected publications, or trusted friends who’ve planned their own weddings. • Consider hiring a wedding planner or consultant. Especially if you are a busy person, or just feel a little lost, a professional. • Use online checklists they’re free, and especially helpful if you’re planning with your mother or future spouse in another state. The most important of these forms is the overall wedding checklist which will help you stay on top of all of your important todos. • If you’re like most couples, you’ll come home from the bookstore with a few thousand pounds of wedding magazines - why not throw in a wedding planning book as well? Now that you’ve made all these decisions, you have a solid foundation for your wedding! It’s now time for the fun stuff - dresses, tuxes, flowers, music, favors and more! Remember to use a checklist to help yourself stay organized and on top of it all.

Wedding Invitations A first glimpse of your wedding style

W

edding invitations often provide guests ith a first glimpse with of a wedding’s style. Invitations also may serve as the means by which distant friends and relatives find out about a couple’s pending nuptials if a formal announcement was not made.

Amid the flourishes of calligraphy and impressive paper stock is information that speaks to the importance of the day when two people will be joining their lives together. Guests will learn not only the time and the place of the wedding from the invitation, but also the formality of the event and the scope of the party that will follow.

Couples should keep certain things in mind as they begin to design their wedding invitations.

• Have a good idea of your potential guest list. Before shopping for wedding invitations, it is key to have a strong idea of just how big the wedding will be and how many guests will be invited. This way you will know how many invitations you will need. Invitations vary in price, so cost may be a consideration if your guest list is extensive.

• Decide on the formality of the wedding. Will you be hosting a black tie affair, or will it be a casual gathering at the shore? Guests infer many things about the wedding from the invitations, which should match the formali-

ty of the event in style and the sentiments expressed. An ornate invitation written with classic wording suggests a more formal affair, while a whimsical invitation with less formal wording could indicate a more laid-back event. • Dare to be different by playing with invitation sizes and shapes. Rectangular cards are standard for wedding invitations, but you can explore your creativity by choosing more modern, artsy invitations. Circular invites or scalloped edges can add some whimsy to the wedding mood. Invitations that fold out or are embellished with ribbon or other decorations can be appealing. Just keep in mind that cards that are not the standard shape and size could be more costly to send. Always have the entire wedding invitation weighed and priced at the post office so you will know what the postage will cost.

than three to four weeks before the wedding, giving ample time to the caterers and accommodating anyone who procrastinates in sending in a response. You will need the final headcount in order to confirm seating arrangements and plan for centerpieces and favors. • Handwrite the envelopes. Your invitation will look more impressive if you address them by hand, rather than printing them off of a computer. If your handwriting is not very neat, consider hiring a professional calligrapher to write out your envelopes.

• Make it easy for guests to respond. Be sure to place a stamp on the response card envelope and have that envelope already addressed with your home address so that guests will have no excuses not to mail a response back promptly. • Always order extra. Mistakes happen, and you may need to send out a few extra invitations that you hadn’t originally counted. Always order extra invitations just to be on the safe side. And don’t forget you will probably want to keep one as a keepsake for yourself.

• Do some math. It is important to know your dates so you can receive the invitations on time, mail them out, and give guests enough time to respond. A good rule of 16072 Henriette Rd, Pine City, MN 55063 thumb is to mail out the invitaWe have the rental item you need! tions at least two • Canopies, tables & chairs months before Call today! • White 6 ft. round tables also available the wedding. 320-629-4990 or 612-221-1416 • Free delivery & setup included Have an RSVP date of no more

• Choose a legible font and text color. Your invitation may look beautiful, but it may prove ineffective if it is difficult to read. Do not risk guests misinterpreting the date or the location because they cannot read the writing on the invitation. • Keep the invitation simple. It may be tempting to load the invitation with lots of information, but all you really need are the key pieces of information, such as the “who,” “what,” “where,” and “when.” Crowding the card will take away from its aesthetic appeal. Most stationers will suggest a separate, smaller insert in the wedding invitation for the reception information and response card. Never put information such as where you are registered or “no kids allowed.” This is material better reserved for word of mouth or on a wedding Web site.
