The Knife Lake Sportsmen’s Club would like to extend our gratitude to the local businesses and residents who so generously provided gifts of merchandise, cash and services to our annual Ice Fishing Contest held on January 18, 2014. We also extend thanks to those who worked with us to help make our event a success: Knife Lake Sanitation, Sanitary Systems, Paul’s Auction Service, the Kanabec County Sheriff ’s Reserves and Boy Scout Troop #191, along with the many volunteers that helped both on and off the ice. Without all of you, and of course the many fishing contestants, we couldn’t have had such a great day!

Small audiences join the performers on the Hardy Center stage, creating a close and more informal concert where members can interact with the performers. The series will offer a variety of styles of music, from folk, to traditional Irish music, and more.

Clearwater Hot Club Saturday, February 15, 2014 7:30 pm

Led by Sam Miltich, the Hot Club’s gypsy jazz-meets traditional swing band captivates audiences. Michael Dregni, biographer, is quoted, “Clearwater Hot Club is one of the most exciting and joyful of Gypsy bands anywhere.” Sam, a jazz guitarist born and raised in the woods of northern Minnesota, plays regularly in the Upper Midwest as a soloist and with his bands The Sam Miltich Trio and The Sam Miltich Quartet. In addition to gypsy swing and traditional jazz, his musical interests include Brazilian choro, French musette, Eastern European tamburitza, and other forms of traditional folk music. Tickets: $15 each or 2 for $25

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the East Central Regional Arts Council thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

Boost Your Meals with Fruits and Vegetables

FEBRUARY 2014

Mora High School Robotics Team

Dietician, Dana Woods, spent time with third-grade students on Dec. 18. She taught the students how to boost their meals with fruits and vegetables to create healthier, well balanced meals. In January, Mrs. Woods, brought her “grocery store to Trailview Elementary. She taught students in third grade about consumer awareness in relation to nutrition.

Forensic Science Class Uses Technology to Extend Learning This fall semester the 17 students in the Forensic Science class at the high school had the opportunity to videoconference with a professional forensic artist from San Jose, Calif. Gil Zamora, the forensic artist, met with the students on three consecutive days. He taught them interview and drawing techniques. On the final day, James Comstock was the mock witness and Mr. Zamora interviewed and sketched the person James described. After 45 minutes or so a very good image of Mark Boxrud the Technology Director, was created! The forensic art unit is always a highlight thanks to the use of technology and the generosity of Gil Zamora.

The 2014 FIRST Robotics season is underway and the Mora High School Robotics team has five more weeks to design, prototype and engineer a robot that can play this year’s “Ariel Assist game. This year’s game is being played by more that 250 teams across Minnesota and more than 2,500 teams nationwide. This year’s game presents some unique engineering challenges. Our team must design a robot that can shoot, catch, pass and lift a game ball that is the size of a common exercise ball. So far our team is still in the design and prototype stages and hope to have a com-

Reverse Field Trip

On Dec. 20, my consumer math class had what I called a “Car Buying Reverse Field Trip. Its purpose was to immerse my students in the whole process of buying and paying for a car. I invited five local experts from the community for the last two hours of the day. The experts were Al Kadlec, Mora Chevrolet Buick; Tim Barnes, a friend of mine representing a private sale; Rich Rasmusson, J&R Auto; Dennis Norby, Sjoberg & Holmstrom; and Joe Anderson, Peoples National Bank. They were broken into groups of 2-3 and spent 15 minutes with each of our experts. At each stop, they heard that person’s specialty and perspective on the car buying process. Each student had to fill out a sheet that detailed what each expert’s Dos and Don’ts were. The kids did amazing. They asked such good questions, engaged with each expert, and were excellent representatives of Mora High. I look forward to doing it again and I’m so thankful we have such a supportive community.

plete, competitive robot within the next few weeks. Wish us luck as we compete at the DECC in Duluth on March 6 through the 8th! For more information on the specifics of this year’s game and on the robotics competition as a whole go to - http://www.usfirst.org. Our team is still looking for local sponsors and mentors! If interested or have questions about this awesome learning experience please contact Mr. John Almos at Mora High School. Like us on Facebook to follow along with our progress!!

Don’t Feed the Bully

Mrs. Lick’s sixth-grade classroom had the opportunity to video conference with author Brad Tassell who wrote the book, “Don’t Feed the Bully. The students were given PDF copies of his book prior to the video conference which they read on their iPads. The class was then able to discuss the book with the author and talk about the ramifications of bullying.

Preschool 2014-2015 Attention parents of prospective preschoolers for the 20142015 school year. Due to possible changes in our offerings of classes for next year, we are moving our registration date to Monday, April 14 from 5-6 pm. Applications will be ready for pick-up in the Fairview School lobby on Monday, March 31. One change that may take place is an all day/two-day-a-week class for four year olds. If you would be interested in this class, please call 320-679-6257 and let us know. Thank you for your understanding!

For a list of Community Education offerings, please visit the Mora School Website at www.mora.k12.mn.us and click on Community Education (under News/Events & Community) or go to the Webstore. If questions, please call (320) 679-6200.

How to Address Your Wedding Invitations

W

h it comes tto addressing hen dd i wedding ddi iinvitait tions, most websites and etiquette experts seem to take an all-or-nothing approach. Most adhere to tradition, insisting that you address your wedding invitations in the most formal way possible: Mr. and Mrs. John Edward Smith The problem is of course, most modern women resent being an appendage of their husband, not to mention that it leaves no guidance for same-sex couples, or those without the same last name. These experts also rely heavily on the use of an interior envelope. However, using only one envelope is one of the easiest ways to save money on your wedding invitations. Others take a completely casual approach, either not mentioning etiquette all together, or insisting that you simply omit any titles: Jane Doe and John Smith The problem with this informal version is exactly that: you’ll want the formality of your wedding invitations to match the formality of your wedding. So here are my new and modern solutions for how to address your wedding invitations:

Be Respectful Etiquette is primarily about respecting one another. So the first and foremost rule is: address people how they prefer to be addressed. This trumps all the other rules that come below. If someone has a PhD but never uses the title of Doctor, then stick with Mr./Mrs./Ms. If a woman prefers to use her husbands’ name (e.g. Mrs. John Smith) then that’s what you should write. There are married ladies who use Ms. and divorced women who still use Mrs., and those who prefer to remain gender neutral. The bottom line is, if you know what someone prefers to be called, then that’s what you should use.

Use First Names It is proper to address a wedding invitation to a person’s full name. If you are using an inner envelope, then the outer envelope can omit them, while the inner envelope velope has the full names of everyone invited. But if you only have one envelope, it should be addressed to everyone in full. Be aware that if you’re following rule #1, some women, especially widows, prefer to use their husbands’ names. In that case, you’ll write Mrs. John Smith rather than Mrs. Jane Smith.

Use Titles A title is a marker of respect and formality. They are appropriate to use on all kinds of wedding invitations, no matter how formal or casual the event is. Except for Mr., Mrs., and Ms., titles should be spelled out fully. (e.g., Doctor instead of Dr.) Some titles you should use on wedding invitations • Mr., Mrs., Ms. for adults • Master and Miss for children under 18 • Doctor

• The Honorable Judge, The Honorable Governo Governor, The Honorable Mayor etc. (Note: All US elected officials other than the President should be addressed with the prefix The Honorable. Since spouses are not elected officials, they do not receive this designation.) • Military titles including Colonel, Sargent, etc.

Special Titles First If one person in a couple has a title other than Mr., Mrs., or Ms., then they should be listed first. For example: Lieutenant and Mr. Jane and John Smith, or Doctor and Mrs. John and Jane Smith. If both members of a couple have titles, then it is traditional to list the woman first: Doctors Jane and John Smith or Lieutenant Jane Smith and Doctor John Smith. (For same sex couples, the order

Addressing Your Wedding Invitations continued is up to you.) The only exceptions to this rule are when a man vastly outranks his wife, in which case he is listed before her. We write: “The Honorable Vice President Joe Biden and Doctor Jill Biden” or “The Vice President and Dr. Jill Biden”

Respect Different Last Names

There are many married women who don’t choose to take their husbands’ names. There are others where only one person in the couple chooses to hyphenate, and many same-sex couples where no one changes their name. This rule is a subset of rule #1, but it bears repeating: When last names differ, it’s traditional to write a woman’s name first before a man’s.

Treat Married and Unmarried Couples the Same

Traditional etiquette says that you should write married couples names on the same line, and unmarried couples on separate lines. (For example, tradition says you should write Mrs. Jane Smith and Mr. John Doe for married couples, but Mrs. Jane Smith Mr. John Doe for unmarried couples. Yet there are increasing numbers of people who enter into long-term commitments without ever tying the knot, and many same-sex couples are unable to be legally married. So the modern and new etiquette rule says to treat them all the same: if they’re a couple, write them on the same line. If their names don’t both fit on the same line, write them on separate lines. (See also: What’s the difference between a wedding and marriage)

Treat Heterosexual and Same-Sex Couples the Same

This should go without saying, but there’s no need to address an invitation to a same-sex couple any differently than you would to an opposite-sex couple. Please don’t just invite one person, then write “and guest” for the other when you know they’re in a long-term relationship. Please don’t send them separate invitations as if they don’t live

A

at the same address. Please don’t write them on separate lines as if they weren’t a couple. (And of course, don’t invite the spouses of your heterosexual friends, but not those of your LGBTI friends). Sadly, I’ve heard of all these things happening. It’s painful and unnecessary.

very casual weddings, you can choose to ignore this rule. However, using the long form can help your invitation stand out as a special occasion. It marks your invite as something you took a little extra time to address, which is never a bad thing to communicate

Different Addresses? Send Two

Be Kind to Yourself

If a couple doesn’t live together, then you should send separate invitations to each address. For roommates who aren’t romantically involved, traditional etiquette says they should receive separate invitations, but I think it’s fine to include them on the same invitation.

While you should always do your best to get things correct, it’s likely that you’ll make an error or two in how someone prefers to be addressed. Even the most formal people have had to accept that the world is less formal than it used to be, and most married women who keep their own name are used to occasionally being called by their husbands’ names. Hopefully, you’re close enough to your wedding guests to know their preferences, but hopefully they also care enough about you to forgive you for an honest mistake.

No Nicknames, Mostly As a rule, write a person’s full name rather than a nickname on an invitation. Write Joseph instead of Joe, or Melissa instead of Missy. However, be aware that not every name that sounds like a nickname is. I know a Jesse who was never a Jessica, and a Jenny whose birth certificate doesn’t say Jennifer. If you’ve never heard them ever use a formal name, stick to the name you know.

Include All Invited Guests Who you address an invitation to is an indication of who’s invited. So don’t just invite your friend, assuming she’ll bring her spouse; both of their names should be on the envelope. Similarly, if you want kids to come, also include their names. Read more about uninvited guests.

Proper Etiquette and Attitude of a Bridesmaid A

fter the initial glow of being asked to hold the honor of bridesmaid wears off, you may feel overwhelmed by the expectations. In most cases, that isn’t what the bride intended when she asked you. Do everything you can to maintain a positive attitude throughout pre-wedding events, wedding, and reception. Loyalty Remember that your first loyalty is to the bride. You need to help her with some of the most important decisions she’ll make for her special day. Even if you don’t agree with some of the things she wants, you should remember that your loyalty is to her and to make her feel good about herself. There might be a time when all she needs is someone to listen to a vent session. Do everything in your power to be there for her during this stressful time. She’s likely to make a few mistakes, and it’s your job to help her deal with them. Know Her Needs Every bride is different, so find out what she wants or needs from you. If she isn’t clear, don’t hesitate to ask. She might only want you to show up for events related to the wedding, or she might expect you to have an active role in planning. Be a Team Player Chances are there will be more than one bridesmaid, so make sure you put on a united front, even if you don’t agree with the other women. You are all there for the same reason – to help ensure that the bride’s day goes well. If you can’t get along with the other bridesmaids, you take a chance on ruining the wedding. She doesn’t need to hear gossip or little

tidbits about how you can’t see eye to eye on things. There may be a few personality issues that make you cringe, but keep them to yourself. This Isn’t About You As a bridesmaid, remember that this wedding is about the bride, not you. If she chooses the most hideous dress for you to wear, you can voice your opinion in a very nice, calm manner. But if she still wants you to wear it, that’s what you should do. When the bride asks you to do something do it if at all possible – even something as difficult as walking through the sand in high heels. She has a vision that may have started as a childhood dream. Don’t ruin it by not cooperating. Your Opinion The bride may ask your opinion about various things throughout the planning process. It is okay to be honest, but if you see that your response is causing distress, back off and ask what she thinks. Groomsman Pairing The bride and groom will probably discuss which groomsman will walk with each bridesmaid. This is strictly their decision, so accept it. If they ask your preference, tell them, but ultimately, it is their choice, even if you don’t care for the guy. Most brides will be kind and avoid pairing a bridesmaid with a guy who dumped her. But if the bride is clueless and sticks you with your ex, grin and bear it. If it bugs you, think of it as a way to make him regret his action by looking your best and being the life of the party at the reception.

Bridesmaid’s Duties In addition to participating in bridal showers, preceding the bride down the aisle toward the altar, and being introduced at the reception, bridesmaids have duties. The bride should be the one to let you know what she expects. Here are some typical duties of the bridesmaid: • Purchase your dress and shoes. • Pay for styling – hair, nails, facial. • Help the bride find the perfect dress. • Host and attend pre-wedding parties, showers, and rehearsal dinner. • Help record gifts so the bride and groom can send thank you notes to the correct people. • Assist the bride with grooming before the wedding and bustling her dress before the reception. • Help with whatever is needed during the wedding and reception. • Offer to give a toast to the bridal couple. Maid of Honor The main bridesmaid is the maid of honor. She carries a few extra responsibilities in addition to those listed above, and she should do them with pleasure and a positive attitude. She is the bride’s strongest advocate during the entire engagement – from helping select the flowers to listening to squabbles between the bride and her future mother-in-law. Here are some of the maid of honor’s extra duties: • Attend dress fittings with the bride. • Be on call from the engagement announcement until the end of the wedding. • Coordinate the bridesmaids and make sure they have all their fittings and appointments.

10 Biggest Things Brides Forget by Meridith b d h Bodgas d

W

ith all the planning you’re doing right now, it’s hard to imagine there’s any detail you haven’t thought of, but trust us, there are certain to-dos that somehow never make it to the list. Here are the top ones we hear about all the time.

1. Making post-wedding plans

We’re not talking about the honeymoon here (who would forget to plan that?). We mean you need to decide what you’re doing immediately after your wedding. If you don’t want the party to end with the last dance, you should pick a late-night spot in or near one of the guest hotels. If privacy isn’t all that important, book your wedding night room in the same hotel as your guests. If you just want to get to bed, we strongly suggest you book a room elsewhere.

b d d and db ll good d choich tor, bridesmaids banquet managers are all es—give them clear instructions on where they should go (one bomboniere on every other plate at tables, for instance, if you want couples to share the takeaways, or all of them in two baskets by the exits if you want guests to pick them up on the way out). Also, if your venue’s staff will be setting out these items, find out when you can drop everything off— some venues want everything a couple of days before your wedding; others won’t take anything until the actual day. 5. Decorating the other areas Of course, no guest will walk out of your wedding if the bathrooms and cocktail bar are left bare. But with all the energy that’s put into dressing up the reception and ceremony spaces, you might want to put in the small extra effort to give these spots the décor they deserve. A few candles will work.

2. Bringing your overnight bag

6. Buying gifts for the wedding party

If you’re allowed to check into your hotel room early—and you don’t personally need to be there to officially check in— pick someone to drop your overnight bag at your hotel before your ceremony starts. A guest who’s staying at the same place will more than likely be happy to do this for you, since they’re going to have to check in anyway! If your things can’t arrive sooner than you, ask a bridesmaid to be responsible for bringing your bag to the wedding and finding a safe spot for it in the bridal suite.

When gifts are constantly coming to your door, it’s hard to remember that you also need to dole some out! So who makes it on the gift list? Everyone who plays a role in your day—yes, your parents and future in-laws, too. You don’t need to make a big presentation.

3. Picking someone to take your things home after the reception

Your gifts, mementos (think toasting flutes, cake topper, unity candle and guest book) and any leftover food, booze or cake need a trusty escort to get them home. Choose a person and let them know about their responsibility. And you may want to donate your centerpieces. Nursing homes typically accept flowers, but call at least a few days before the wedding to find out when someone can drop off the arrangements. If you’re changing out of your gown before you head to your hotel room, you’ll need a person to take it home, too— even if you have no plans to get it professionally preserved, you don’t want to leave it behind! Make sure there’s a hanger and a garment bag on hand (the one your dress came with will do!) so your gown stays in tip-top shape.

7. Choosing how to gather the gifts There are three times when guests are likely to thrust gifts at you: while they’re in the receiving line, during your table visits and when they leave for the night. Designate a person—one of your bridesmaids, your mum or your groom’s mum—to collect envelopes, and have them by your side with a large but inconspicuous bag when you’re saying hello and goodbye to your guests. That person should also keep an eye out for guests who seem a little lost at the reception—they may be trying to figure out where they should put their gift! If you decide instead to have a wishing well, box or other stationary receptacle, tell a few people to subtly spread the word around. 8. Figuring out your day-after plans If you’re leaving for your honeymoon straight from your hotel, make advance arrangements for a car service to take you from the hotel to the airport, and be sure you bring any

4. Deciding where everything goes

Besides planning where all of your guests sit, you need to figure out where you’ll put programs, escort and place cards, menus (if you’re having them) and bomboniere. Once you’ve picked who’s going to set these out—your wedding coordina-

luggage you want with you on your trip (and a passport if you need it). If you’re not going on your honeymoon right away, then you need to know where you’re going the morning after your wedding (to your new—or old—home, or your parents’ house?) and how you’re going to get there. Park your car at the hotel before your wedding if you’re allowed, or ask a friend to come pick you up and bring you where you want to go the next day. Don’t schedule your ride too early—with any luck, you’ll be exhausted. 9. Bringing the legal documents Signing your marriage certificate after the wedding ceremony is one of the most important aspects of your day; after all, it officializes the reason you threw a wedding in the first place! After all the hours of planning, you’re probably more focused on the party afterwards than the legal side of your nuptials, but without the paperwork, all the stress and money spent will be for nothing. Your celebrant should hopefully keep you on top of all the legal requirements, such as lodging your Notice of Intended Marriage at least one month and a day before your wedding day, and bringing along three marriage certificates for you to sign on the day. Check with them a few days before the wedding so you can have peace of mind. 10. Making and confirming itineraries Check in with every single supplier, from the limo driver to the linen rental company, one week before your wedding. Many of them will beat you to it, so be ready to go over times and locations whenever you get a call. Send out agendas to your bridesmaids and groomsmen, too—how else will they know what time you’re taking photos? If someone in the bridal party is notorious for being late, start their schedule half an hour early just in case.

THANK YOU Thank you to all involved in making the BB32 Tourney a success. To all those behind the scenes getting FSN North, setting up, putting lines down, and for the help inside the warming house, thank you. Thanks to local businesses that made this possible and to the participants. It was another successful year of hockey and a beautiful weekend. Thanks again to all, The Youngbauers The Berglunds THANK YOU Thank you for your generous contributions to the Pine Community Food Shelf in 2013. The generosity of all donors allowed us to distribute almost 344 thousand pounds of food to 6530 community members. The retail value of the 2013 distributed food is $740,000.00. This was accomplished with a 2013 total budget of $64,500.00. We are blessed to have 60 volunteers who work every week, handling piece by piece each food item that is distributed. We also have 20 folks that are subs; they fill in when a regular, weekly volunteer can’t be here. We would love to add YOU as a new volunteer. Pine Community Food Shelf responds to meet the needs of our neighbors who are struggling with a food shortage. While most of our clients are low income, we understand that others can also have a financial emergency. This past fall, we increased our food shelf open hours and also added “Fantastic Friday.” Each Friday, from 10:30 – 1:30, people can come in and select produce and bread that is still available for the week. We want to get all perishable food out to people before the weekend. Through generous community support, the food shelf has doubled its building size. This allows for more efficient storage space. In 2014, we plan to add a 3-door freezer and 3-door refrigerator. Any time you would like to take a tour of our building, stop in, we’d love to show you around! With sincere appreciation, Julie Werner, Pine Community Food Shelf, 320-629-0128, juliefoodshelf@qwestoffice.net

Larry Hale and Rev. Jeremy Langmade for their message. Thank you to the Gideons with the Gideon Circle song, and to the Naval representatives who gave military honors. We were overwhelmed at all of you who were present, who sent cards, flowers, gifts in memory and showed us your love. Thank you and may God bless you. Larry Heineman’s family Glenice Lori, June, Garold & Terri THANK YOU My family and I would like to thank each and every one who showed love and kindness after the sudden death of my husband, Dick Zortman. Special thanks to Pastor and Mary Johnson who came as soon as they were called and all their help with the service. Thanks to the First Responders who did all they could to save Dick, and to Amy Trelstad for contacting family and friends. Thanks also to the church ladies for the wonderful meal, the Hawkinson and Skogen families for music, and all who gave food, flowers, cards and money.
