Interesting facts about horses By Katherine Blocksdorf Horses are such fascinating creatures! Even if you never learned to ride or drive one, you could spend your whole life studying them and still have plenty to explore. Here are 15 interesting facts about horses.
Horses Sleep Standing Up Yes, horses do sleep standing up! They sleep laying down too, but only for short times.
Horses Can’t Burp That’s right! Horse’s can’t burp, at least not the way humans do. They can’t vomit or breath through their mouths like humans do either. A horse’s digestive system is a oneway street, unlike cattle and other ruminants who regurgitate food to re-chew it. Although they have a pretty efficient way of processing the tough fibrous foods that makes up their forage, this long one directional system can cause problems that result in colic.
A Horse’s Age Can be Estimated by Its Teeth While you can’t tell the exact age of a horse by its teeth, you can estimate its age. Horses need proper equine dental care
for their teeth, but sometimes a horse lives longer than its teeth do, so extra care is needed when feeding senior horses.
Horses Can Live to Be Over 30 Years Old One of the most common questions about horses is ‘how long does a horse live’. The answer may surprise you, as our knowledge or horse nutrition, horse care and veterinary medicine has increased. So just as human life expectancy has increased, so has equine longevity.
The American Quarter Horse is The World’s Most Popular Breed Appreciated by beginner riders and professional horsemen alike, the American Quarter Horse is the world’s most popular breed.
Arabian Horses Have One Less Vertebrae Than Other Breeds
Horses are Herbivores Humans are omnivores, lions are carnivores and horses are herbivores. The way their teeth are formed, the position of their eyes and their digestive system are all typical characteristics of herbivores. Horses are Herd Animals Horses in the wild live in small herds and domestic horses feel more comfortable if they have companions too. It can be quite stressful for a horse to live alone. To keep your horse happy, it will need a (preferably equine) friend.

Horses Were Domesticated By Humans About 3500 BC
Small engine & torpedo heater repair
Dogs may have become domesticated around 14,000 years ago. Cats became our companions about 8500 years ago. Humankind’s relationship with the horse began a little more recently, about 3500 BC.
Horseman’s Choice Equine Equipment
Horses are Measured in ‘Hands’ The Arabian Horse is the foundation of many other light horse breed. They also possess some unique characteristics. Arabian horses have one fewer vertebrae, rib and tail bone than other horses.
Mon.-Fri. 8 am to 5:30 pm Saturday 9 am to 1 pm
The standard measurement for determining the height of a horse is called a hand. A pony is any equine under 14.2 hands. The only equines not measured in hands are Miniature Horses that are measured in inches or centimeters.

Five Things You Should Know:
Northern Tough Toms
FIRST You Need to be Saved: “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23) “...Except a man be born again, he cannot see the Kingdom of God.” (John 3:3) SECOND You Cannot Save Yourself: “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us...” (Titus 3:5) THIRD Jesus Has Provided for Your Salvation: “God commended His love to us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.” (Romans 5:8-9) FOURTH You Must Accept Jesus for Salvation: “...Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved...” (Acts 16:31) “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” (Romans 10:9-10) FIFTH Now is the Time to Accept Jesus as Saviour: “(...behold, now is the day of Salvation.)” (II Corinthians 6:2) “...As the Holy Ghost saith, TODAY IF YE WILL HEAR HIS VOICE, HARDEN NOT YOUR HEART...” (Hebrews 3:7-8)

She was 52 years old. She was born on Jan. 30, 1961 in St. Cloud to parents, Bernard and Margaret (Mondloch) Sunderman. She attended school in Waite Park until the ninth grade when the family moved to Mora. She attended Mora High School, graduating in 1979. In 1983 she met Jerry Stenstrom in Mora. The couple was united in marriage on April 29, 1988 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mora. The couple lived in Ogilvie, Lewis Lake, Ann Lake and finally settling in their current home in rural Isle. She loved to spend time outdoors, deer hunting and fishing with her husband or simply watching the birds and wild turkeys that wander into their yard. She looked forward to all the time spent at their cabin on Fleming Lake near Aitkin with her family and friends. Because she loved a garage sale, she could never pass up an opportunity to find a treasure for family or friend. Before her health declined she and her husband enjoyed many trips including Hawaii, Arkansas and Tennessee. Most of all she loved her family. She was a proud foster mother and
loved her kids as her own. She treasured her many nieces and nephews and was always available to babysit or help as needed. Her outgoing and loving spirit will be truly missed by her many family and friends. She was preceded in death by mother, Margaret and sister, Mary Kay Sunderman. She is survived by her loving husband of 25 years, Jerry; father, Bernie Sunderman; siblings, Diane (Kevin) Seefeld of Isle, Bill (Lori) Sunderman of Mora, Julie (Roy) Habeck of Isle, Lisa (Steve) Schneider of Litchfield and Jeni Sunderman of Ogilvie; foster children, Marvin, Amy, Missy and Ashley all of Isle; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A funeral mass was held on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mora with Fr. Gene Plaisted and Rita Clasemann officiating. Pallbearers were Diane Seefeld, Bill Sunderman, Julie Habeck, Lisa Schneider, Jeni Sunderman and Lynn Orazem. Burial was in the Fish Lake Cemetery in Mora. Arrangements were by the Akkerman-Ingebrand Funeral Home of Mora. Condolences may be posted at www.aifuneralhome.com.

IN REMEMBRANCE OF MINNIE FOLKEMA Mom - you gave us life, nurtured and cared for us, and when you felt the time was right, you set us free. Through the years, never once did you complain or wish for things to be any different. You simply took your life in stride, no questions asked, embracing the happy moments along with the sad, accepting all things for what they were. That was your way. We didn’t always understand or appreciate everything you did. We were children with our own innocent perception of the world. Now, as grown-ups, we can reflect with such admiration and respect on the wonderful woman and mother you were. You stood with courage and met the responsibilities that fell upon you, and sacrificed so much for the love of your children. What you accomplished was more than you would ever realize. When we think of all that you had done for our family and all the love you had so generously poured from your heart, we feel humbled. But our heart will always be filled with the joy of knowing your love. It is the most precious gift we have ever received, for it is the one you had so wisely taught us to set free and share with others. We love you for having been a caring person, a remarkable woman, and an exceptional mother. This love that you had given will forever live within us. Thank you for having been our mother. God called Mom to his heavenly home one year ago, a part of his great plan, and although it may be hard, we all must understand. Faith is what is hoped for, things we cannot see, Heaven is promised to all of us if only we believe. WE MISS YOU MOM!!! Love – Your Children
