THAT MAR AN AUTOMOTIVE PAINT JOB

Most people purchase a car for its looks and performance. However, unless the auto is kept in a garage and never driven, it is impossible to keep it in pristine condition. In many cases, damage to the clear coat or enamel paint on the car is something vehicle owners expect. A car owner who decides he or she wants the car to remain in the best shape possible will have to take an active role in maintenence and damage prevention. One of the key things to remember is to never allow any substance to remain on the paint for too long; otherwise the risk for damage increases. Also, it may be very difficult to clean if the offender is allowed to sit on the paint. Here are some other factors to consider. * UV light: Just as UV light can affect skin, hair and other parts of the body, it also can affect the paint on a car. UV rays oxidize the paint and cause a white, powdery film to form on the car. Washing the car frequently enough and applying the best quality wax will help keep UV rays from penetrating through the paint. * Over sprays: Life does not stop to allow cars to drive through, particularly when it comes to construction zones. It’s possible for a car to be doused in paint spray, tar, concrete, and other chemicals that are routinely used in construction. Do not allow these substances to harden on the car. Rinse promptly with automotive soap. Try to avoid construction zones whenever possible.

* Rain: Both acid rain and regular rainwater (and other sources of water) can dissolve paint over time. The U.S. Geological Survey has said that water is a universal solvent because it can dissolve more substances than any other liquid. Whenever the car becomes wet, it should be dried with a towel or chamois and not allowed to air dry. * Natural substances: Tree sap, bird droppings and splattered insects contain compounds that can erode the paint on a car. Avoid parking under large trees where sap and bird droppings may be prevalent. In terms of bug splatter, try to wash it off as soon as possible to alleviate damage. * Eggs: Oftentimes, rambunctious children think it is funny to egg a car. However, the enzymes and sulfur content in eggs can cause paint and clear coat to dissolve, leaving white spots in the wake of the egg. Because egg can be sticky and very hard to remove once dried, it is helpful to wash it off as soon as possible. It takes only a few hours for the damage to be permanent. * Bleach: Although a bleach-and-water solution is often heralded for its ability to clean many things, it should not be used on a car. Bleach is an oxidizer and it will pit metal and discolor paint. Be careful with pool chemicals as well, as chlorinator is usually regular household bleach.

HAPPY 90TH BIRTHDAY EUNICE HINDE Eunice Hinde’s family invites you to come and help her celebrate her birthday. An open house will be held on Saturday, May 10 from 2 to 4 at the Kanabec History Center Party Room - 805 W. Forest Ave., Mora. Please, no gifts.

SAMUEL S. CASTELLINO Samuel Serge Castellino of Mora died on Friday, April 18, 2014. He was 87 years old. He had a very amazing and storied life. His journey began in Sicily. He was born on March 4, 1927. After experiencing much hunger and poverty early in life, he was instilled with an amazing determination and work ethic that gave him the drive needed to take on even bigger challenges to come. He began seeking a better life for himself and that meant leaving Sicily. He traveled through Italy, worked in France for seven years in coal mines and steel plants. He spent time as a farmer and did construction also in France. During these years he was preparing himself for his ultimate journey to the United States of America. He traveled overseas to Canada, then eventually to New York. There he met RoseMary Compisi, his future wife of 57 years. He began his career as a diesel truck mechanic for Cummins Engine Service, Fruehauf Trailer and Kenworth Trucks. During this time his daughter, Maria, was born. Not long after her birth his journey was to continue, this time to Minnesota. He moved his new family to seek out better living in the country and new opportunities, working for many years as a mechanic for Mack Trucks in St. Paul. During

May 6 Pre-Diabetes 101 FirstLight Health System in Mora invites persons who would like to learn more about diabetes to a seminar from 4 - 6:30 p.m. Participants will learn how diabetes is diagnosed and how making small lifestyle changes can prevent the disease. Books and handouts will be provided and a healthy meal will be served. A fee will be charged. The seminar is taught by a registered dietician. Registration is required by calling 679-1313. THANK YOU I want to say thanks to all who sent cards, flowers and attended my 90th birthday celebration. A special thanks to my family who made this all possible. Maree Nordenstrom this time his son, Gino was born. In 1969 he suffered a serious back injury while at work. He was a very gifted mechanic and inventor, always with fresh ideas and new approaches to problems. These talents led him to a career with RayGo Heavy Equipment Company in Plymouth, as a service representative, and resulted in him traveling extensively throughout the United States, troubleshooting problems with engines, electrical and hydraulic systems that others had given up on. About 1977 he began his own business, in both sales and service of contractor’s equipment, concrete cutting saws, power trowels, etc. “SAMSON EQUIPMENT,” as it was known, proved to be very successful, with many loyal customers and was a source of much pride and satisfaction. In 2005 he and his wife moved to the Mora area. They built their home and enjoyed it fully. He loved trees and was often occupied planting and tending to the trees in his yard and his other properties. After his wife’s passing in 2010, he spent time with friends and volunteered regularly at One More Time Thrift Store in Mora. He was also very proud of being physically fit. He was often seen at the gym and he ate a very healthy diet. It was his desire to be at his home for his passing and he did just that, surrounded by his loving family. “You go now.” He touched many lives and will be deeply missed. He is survived by sister, Maria Gambino of Italy; children, Maria (Kenneth) Cannady of St. Louis Park, and Gino (Missy) Castellino of Grasston; grandchildren, Samantha, Christopher, Nicholas, Sarah; step-grandchildren, Lonnie and Christopher plus many nieces and nephews. A memorial visitation will be held on Thursday, May 1, 2014 from 5 - 8 p.m. at AkkermanIngebrand Funeral Home in Mora. Condolences may be posted at www.aifuneralhome.com.
