SPECIAL EDUCATION EVALUATIONS FOR HOME-SCHOOLED OR PRIVATE-SCHOOL STUDENTS In response to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA 2004) Minnesota School Districts must demonstrate that “all children with disabilities, including children with disabilities attending private schools, regardless of the severity of their disabilities, and who are in need of special education and related services, are identified, located and evaluated.” This responsibility extends to children with disabilities who are educated at home or in nonpublic schools. Upon request, your local public school will provide information to concerned parents on specific disabilities including information about the educational or behavioral characteristics of each disability. Parents who believe their child may indeed have a disability may request information on how to arrange for an evaluation through the district’s special education staff. Parents of students who are evaluated and are found to be eligible for special education services will become part of a team, which will develop, implement and monitor the effectiveness of a Service Plan to meet the identified needs of their children. If you have questions or would like to receive information about specific disabilities or evaluation, please contact the principal of the school building your child would be attending if he/she was enrolled in public school. Your school district is committed to success for all learners.

Kanabec County Times 320-679-2661

A Letter From Dr. Menk To my patients and friends, There have been many rumors, but this time it’s true. After 39 years, I am retiring from medical practice. It has been quite an adventure. On my first night of call, November of 1976, I was delivering my first baby at Kanabec County Hospital, when a nurse gave me a message that my wife was in labor. With the assistance of Dr. Brettingen, I delivered my own son, Ross, my second delivery that night. I was unable to attend the delivery of our daughter, Melissa, in Pennsylvania because hospitals weren’t so family-centered at that time. That had a great effect on my approach to family medicine and I hoped to bring what I had learned there to my new practice. I was able to be present for the delivery of our third child, Karl, but I was just “dad” and my wife, JoAnn, thought that was a better deal. Dr. Brettingen and I figured we delivered about 4000 babies during our careers together. It was quite a rush. Moms were generally healthy and were pregnant, wanted to get pregnant or didn’t want to get pregnant - simple as that. It was a time of excitement, fear and sleeplessness but with huge rewards. And from those deliveries came families that I had the joy of taking care of for many years; well child check-ups, earaches, belly pains, rashes and all that fun stuff. After 20 years, my practice shifted to Hinckley with my focus shifting more to internal medicine. These same patients got older and developed different medical needs including arthritis, heart disease, diabetes, and lung disease being the bulk of my practice. These being new and different types of challenges, often more serious. I saw a lot of changes during this tenure - ultrasound, CT, MRI, stents, joint replacement, and valve replacement are a few of the biggies. But people remained people. They got older and developed more things that could be treated but not always fixed. Diseases tended to be chronic and it took a lot more technology to find the problem culprits, which made it an interesting field. I appreciate you sharing your lives with me, for having confidence in my training and abilities. I hope I have made your lives more comfortable and relieved some of your pain and suffering. I hope I have shown you the way to better health. I loved hearing your stories and I hope you enjoyed mine. Medicine is one of my loves and in my heart I will never be ready to retire. But of course I love my wife, children, and grandchildren and look forward to new adventures with them in the coming years. I also enjoy travel, tractors, mules, and trail-making so will need time to continue my hobbies enjoying engines and big boy toys. It has been quite a trip. I am so lucky to have had this opportunity to serve you. I leave you in the capable and caring hands of my colleagues. These same people have taken care of me and my family so I trust them with you. Keep in touch. Ronald K. Menk, MD
