NEW LEADERSHIP. NEW VISION. My wife and I moved to Pine County seven years ago. We have two children, and we are very involved our community. However, as a father, neighbor and prosecutor, I’m concerned about the state of justice in Pine County. I’m running for county attorney because we can do better than the status quo. I will repair the rift between the county attorney’s office and sheriff’s office to work as a team. I will keep repeat offenders off the streets. I will give priority to crimes with direct victims. I will be accountable to the citizens of Pine County. y

Vote Yes M sister My i t and dI are writing this as we would appreciate your support for our schools on Nov. 4th. Our teachers are great and help us learn. But we need to be able to drink the water and not have yucky stuff like asbestos in the school too. In science class, we learned that lead and asbestos are not good for us. We need people who care about us and our future and are role models on the school board. The school is about students, and not about parents and money. Please vote for Mr. Bob Woods, Mrs. Tammy Bohachek and Mr. Bob Jensen as we have had them as coaches, see them at the schools helping out, and they have kids in the school too. We know that they care about kids and education. They are great.

Please bear with me... BUT I FEEL SO STRONGLY ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF EDUCATION

O

n Wednesday, the elementary school principal and assistant principal spoke to us here at Park Forest Apartments. They did a very good job and certainly answered all the questions. After reading Laird Mork’s Letter to the Editor (I agreed with him 100 percent), I decided to show my support and print one of the four informative sheets the faculty members gave us. People might say, “She’s not paying taxes anymore” — well, I am — in our rent and my family also does, for their homes and businesses, even though none of us have children in school anymore. We support education. Mora is a great place to live and bring up a family. It has always been thought of as a progressive community and certainly our

schools are a large part of it. We want our kids to have the best education possible by attracting good faculty members and having up-to-date facilities. Also encourage people to want to live here. For between $5 and $15 a month we can upgrade our schools and be proud of how they contribute to a successful future for our children. Think carefully when you go to vote. I think those extra dollars will be well spent and we’ll have schools everyone can be proud of and help prepare our young people for a good future. Putting it off is not a good idea. Let’s do some really positive things for our kids. They will appreciate it in the years to come. Muriel Gorham

MORA PUBLIC SCHOOLS November 4th, 2014: Referendum Information WHAT DOES THE REFERENDUM INCLUDE? • Improvements at site to include: Safer bus drop-off and parking at Trailview and the High School, replacement of tennis courts at Trailview and replacement of lost ballfields from Fairview site. Cost: $1,761,760 • Replace the existing Fairview Elementary School with a new 61,000 square feet Pre Kindergarten through Second-Grade Elementary School addition on to Trailview Elementary School. Cost: $14,924,000 • High School work including window replacement, HVAC Improvements, and Technology Infrastructure upgrades. Cost: $1,560,000 WHAT WILL THE SCHOOL LOOK LIKE? Once the referendum passes the District will work with a planning group and the Architects to determine the look and design of the building. While initial concept drawings are developed, we want the eventual school to reflect the needs and values of our community, which the design process will provide. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Why can’t we fix the schools? Do we really need to replace Fairview? The question isn’t why can’t we fix Fairview, but should we continue to invest in Fairview. Given the number of issues at Fairview and the need to provide better educational spaces, the Task Force felt replacement was a more fiscally responsible solution. What will happen if this fails? Our needs are real, and they will not go away. If the referendum is not successful the District will need

to continue to ask for voter support to address the needs, while making critical investments in the buildings as needed to keep them operational. HOW IS THIS DIFFERENT THAN THE 2012 REFERENDUM? It was clear to the District that the voters did not support the previous referendum request. In order to better understand the needs and views of the District, a Community Task Force was established to review the issues and make a recommendation on how best to meet the current needs. This group met several times over the past months to study the issues, consider options, and advise on the best approach, which became the referendum. • Significantly less cost: $18.37 million versus the $62.9 million previous referendum • Replacement of Fairview, with only critical investments at the High School HOW WILL THIS AFFECT THE TAXPAYER? Because of the overwhelming response that the previous referendum was too expensive, the current referendum is at a significantly lower tax impact. Estimated Market Value $100,000 $125,000 $150,000 $200,000

Estimated Annual Tax Increase $68 $93 $119 $171

Please see the District website for additional property values as well as commercial, agricultural and Non-Homestead estimated impacts.

JARED ROSATI FOR SHERIFF Every four hours a Theft or Burglary is committed in Pine County. This is unacceptable, and I have a plan to bring this number down. It starts with our Officers living in our communities and getting to know the people in our communities. When an officer has a vested interest in our community, a call for service looks a lot different. The officer is not helping a stranger, the Officer is helping a neighbor. Secondly, I will implement a case management system so the information and evidence from existing cases can be shared and linked. This will increase the number of cases solved. Thirdly, we need a true Field Training Program so all officers and employees have the skills necessary to put a case like this together from start through a successful prosecution. Finally, we must educate the community on practices that will lower the possibility of becoming a victim of these crimes. I will also implement a program to help identify and make record of an individual’s property. That way we will have a better chance of recovering your property and bringing those responsible to justice. We have to stop making it so easy on thieves and burglars in our community. Once we have accomplished this we can work with the Pine County Attorney’s Office to ensure that these criminals receive maximum penalties to deter them in the future. All of us must work together to lower this staggering statistic. I have the energy and experience to see this plan through. It is time to move away from the reactive police tactics that have gotten us to this point. It is time to be proactive and productive. I am a high-energy person who will lead by example and bring the production of the Sheriff’s Department to a new level. While working side-by-side with my opponent I had 375 arrests to his 75.

Malicious campaign crosses the line often hear of accusations of wrong-doing, conspiracy theories, rumors. If there is indeed provable wrong-doing, we are fearless in publishing. More often, the accusations are baseless or at best not backed up by any credible evidence. The Rollins campaign material distributed last week that tied his opponent to the failure to prosecute a sexual abuse case turned my usually neutral emotions about local elections into anger. The eight page campaign letter, by its sheer length was designed to provide the illusion of a fact-filled court or law enforcement document. The more I thought about that campaign material during the week, the more angry I became. Then on Tuesday, the Rollins campaign placed a new flier on cars that were parked at the candidates

Publishing my column in the Advertiser is unprecedented. I do not believe it has ever happened before, but there isn’t another issue of the Times before the election. Our philosophy in covering elections at the Kanabec County Times is to provide a forum for candidates and citizens through letters and advertising, to debate local issues. We should not become part of the debate. But I cannot sit by and not comment Publisher on what is the most negative, maliWade Weber cious, misleading campaign I have ever witnessed locally. That is the Ken Rollin campaign for Kanabec County Sheriff. In our news gathering work here at the Times we

forum. That flier contained quotes from other people in law enforcement, which accused Rollins’ opponent of mishandling the sexual abuse case. The problem is one of the people quoted, Cambridge police chief Tim Dwyer, contacted the Times and said he was misquoted and misled. That story can be read on the Times website, www.moraminn.com. I have no control over how voters will mark their ballots next Tuesday. But electing Ken Rollins for sheriff will not serve Kanabec County well. Some people who read this will accuse me of using my position at the Times to unfairly treat one candidate and help another. I cannot prevent that either. What I can do is sleep better in future years knowing I wrote this, because I know in my heart if I did not, I would regret it for many years to come.

Vote Nov. 4 Tim Faust - District 11B – Prepared and paid for by Tim Faust for MN House, PO Box 154, Mora, MN 55051 –

There have been many letters and discussions concerning the proposed referendum soon before you. The anti-education/school group, with the coaching of their anti-referendum consultant from Iowa is coming out in force. The misinformation being delivered is a continuing attempt to mislead. The Mora School Board’s position has been to gather factual and public information to provide the best possible and lowest long-term cost solution for the taxpayers. Our walls have always been transparent. This process has been ongoing and part of board work sessions and school board meetings for the 11 ¾ years I have been on the board. The facts are obvious; No matter what the anti-education/school group says, we cannot continue to provide a 1st rate education to our students without investing in our schools. The school is the central part of any community. As many small rural communities can testify, without it, the community dies. In addition to the referendum, voters will also decide on November 4th to elect three new members to lead the Mora School District into the future. Please make your choices carefully. If you truly care about the direction of the district you will cast your vote for three of the following: Bob Woods, Bobby Jensen, Tammy Bohachek and Dana Fleugge. They certainly have your community and school district in your and their best interests. Doyle Casavant School Board Member -Prepared & Paid for by Doyle Casavant, 2056 220th Ave, Mora, MN 55051-

Recently my opposition has engaged in an extremely negative campaign strategy in an attempt to discredit myself and the Kanabec County Sheriff’s Office. These attacks are based on misleading information and misrepresentation of the true facts in each instance. In response to allegations regarding the mishandling of an investigation: Kanabec County Attorney Barbara McFadden has written a letter to the Editor to confirm the facts in question. A copy of this letter is available on my website. www.briansmithforkanabecsheriff.com In response to a new piece of propaganda released regarding allegations of mishandling of an investigation claiming “top cops say”: In a phone call received from Cambridge Police Chief Tim Dwyer, I was informed that the quote my opponent used was in fact not a statement he made. Chief Dwyer was given a hypothetical situation and had not been allowed to review any actual facts. He does not agree with Mr. Rollins nor would he comment on a case in which he does not know the facts. Chief Dwyer is willing to confirm this with anyone. He can be contacted at: (763) 552-3244. I find it appalling that someone claiming to have integrity will intentionally mislead the public and attempt to destroy public trust for nothing more than personal gain! If you want to be informed find the facts from the source. Don’t be manipulated by the bits and pieces of information from my opponent. This election is about qualifications, professionalism and integrity. Take a close look at the background of both candidates and evaluate closely who is best qualified to be the next Sheriff of Kanabec County. I am proud of my record and eager to serve the citizens of Kanabec County as your next Sheriff! I would be happy to address your questions or concerns by phone at (320) 496-0767.

WE NEED A REAL CHANGE! ELECT

Hometow S a l e s a n dn S e r v i c e!

Prepared and paid for by the CommiƩee to Elect Brian Smith Sheriī, Chairman Tim McNeilly, Mora, MN

KEN

ROLLINS

SHERIFF OF KANABEC COUNTY

NEW LEADERSHIP • NEW DIRECTION

Last week I stated that this week’s ad would address an “whisper campaign” against me and I am doing so now. Additionally, I have been asked a great many times what mine and Brian Smith’s positions are regarding the 2nd Amendment. I cannot say what Smith’s position is but you can see mine below. October 22, 2014 Several people have informed me that certain people have recently circulated a “whisper campaign” about a matter that took place almost 20 years ago in 1995. During this election process, I have raised a number of concerns about the serious issues in the current Sheriffs Department. Smith has chosen steadfastly to remain entirely silent about each of these issues. I don’t believe in ignoring concerns so I am providing this information to you even though most of you have not even heard about this. Space here greatly reduces the amount of detail, I can provide. However, I would be more than happy to answer any questions you may have. Feel free to call me at 320 496 3232. False rumors have been circulating that I choked a young boy, some saying that he was only 13. The truth is A. I did not choke him. B. He was just shy of 18 not 13. C. My supervisor who was 2 or 3 feet away repeatedly said that I did not choke him. In fact, my supervisor was adamant that no one who is being choked would be able to yell and swear at the rate or volume like this young man continued to do. In this matter, the young man’s father was fed up with his many previous escapades as well as his actions in this incident. The father wanted nothing to do with any action against me. Additionally, the young man later refused to come to a hearing when he found he would have to testify under oath. Since then I have been hired as a full-time of¿cer by the Osseo Police Department and later the Mora Police Department. Additionally, I have worked part-time for the Minnesota State Fair Police Department since the year 2000 and the Howard Lake Police Department since the Mora Police Department was disbanded. Obviously, like any other applicant, I have undergone thorough background investigations prior to being hired by these agencies. Clearly, all departments would like to avoid a problem of¿cer and would not hire an applicant if there were any concerns whatsoever. In today’s world, many of¿cers who actually go out and work have experienced incidents in which those we are forced to interact with sometimes make complaints, valid or otherwise. If I had actually been guilty of choking this young man I would never have been hired by any of these agencies. Brian Smith is very well aware of this and knows that he would not hire someone guilty of such an action. That then begs the question; why are false rumors spreading. I would much rather have public discussion shifted away from rumors and focus on more current local issues? 2nd Amendment -I am a strong supporter of our 2nd Amendment rights. I recognize the need to exercise reasonable caution about some people and their possession of ¿rearms. Having said that I am adamantly opposed to the federal government con¿scating ¿rearms from the general population. In his ads candidate Brian Smith has repeatedly talked about his integrity, his accountability and his leadership experience. In his last ad Smith stated, “This election is about quali¿cations, professionalism and integrity’’. Smith went on to say, “My character and background speak for themselves.” I suggest that each voter consider Smith’s statements and claims against the facts, which are revealed in the government documents and other writings included in a mailer I recently sent to each address in Kanabec County. If you, like so many people, feel the need for a change in the leadership of the Sheriffs Department -vote for a REAL change.

I WOULD APPRECIATE YOUR SUPPORT AND VOTE NOVEMBER 4

This activity is made possible by The McKnight Foundation and also by the voters of Minnesota thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

The “C” Family Thank You On behalf of all of Glenda’s family, the “C”s want to say thank you to everyone as we work through these very tough times. From the kind words, the hugs, the food, and the overwhelming showing of Dragon support at her “Celebration of Life” get-together, it made the entire family realize how very much Glenda meant to all she has had contact with and how so very much she will be missed. The importance of what Glenda has accomplished for family and community was never more evident. After Àrst making sure her family was good, Glenda then turned all of her efforts to her school family and their needs, so with your very generous contributions, the family will be making a donation to the Pine City Schools Mary Murphy Fund on her behalf. The intent of this fund, which was started well over 25 years ago, was to lend monetary support to help our students get some of the basic things we take for granted. Medical supplies, clothing, meals, school fees, and holiday presents have all been purchased from this fund over the years. As this was exactly what Glenda worked tirelessly for each and every day, it is a most Àtting cause.

Thank you again - and as always, “It’s a great day to be a DRAGON.”
