Mora Public Schools

On Nov. 12, 25 students from the high school group Above the Influence attended WE Day at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Sponsored by the organization, Free the Children, We Day is a day to empower youth to make a positive change in their home communities and across the globe. Students who attended heard messages from many notable figures including Magic Johnson, Martin Sheen, and heard performances from famous entertainers including The Band Perry and Colby Callait. Students don’t buy their tickets to We Day, they earn them through acts of service. Above the Influence members have already made an impact in our local community through activities to raise awareness about chemical health issues and a food drive called We Scare Hunger. More amazing opportunities await these youth and our community as this school year unfolds.
MHS Sr. High Focus Students Visit the Audubon Center of the North Woods Field trip funded by: The Mora Education Foundation (MEF) On Nov. 12, Senior High Focus students from Mora High School were able to obtain a great educational experience at the Audubon Center of the North Woods, in Sandstone. Students participated in the Challenge and Adventure Program. The program focused on building the following skills: teamwork, communication, confidence, and thinking “outside the box.” The students were met with four challenge courses for the day that forced them to communicate with each other by using strategy to accomplish the final outcome of the challenge. After much perseverance, the challenges were accomplished with satisfaction. Highlights of the day were shared by the students with the instructors, and a much needed lunch was prepared and served to the students for their well deserved efforts. Comments from the Audubon Instructors at the end of the day made for a welcoming ride home to Mora High School. The instructors noted that the Focus group were amongst the most pleasurable group of students they had worked with. They were impressed with the spirit and inclusive attitudes of the group, and the fact that there were no cliques. The encouragement they gave one another so all team members felt successful was noted as well. The students felt accomplished at the end of the day. They understood the importance of team building through communication, and how to problem solve with creativity. A BIG thank you goes out to the Mora Education Foundation for accepting the grant request and providing the funding for this valuable educational experience!
A special way of giving to others, these pillows are provided to breast cancer patients who have had surgery and can also be helpful for cancer patients who are bothered by their medication ports or they can also provide comfort when placed under a seat belt. Mrs. Wallace’s Crafts and Scrapbook Class made these pillows as a service project.
DECEMBER 2014
Thank you, Mr. Larsen, for entertaining high school students with your fantastic guitar and vocal skills! On special occasions, biology teacher Peter Larsen will perform just outside of his door during passing times. During homecoming week, he covered Johnny Cash tunes on the blackout dress up day. The day before Thanksgiving, Mr. Larsen was again delighting students with his musical stylings as they made their way to class. Staff and students appreciate the spirit he brings to Mora High School!
The week before Thanksgiving, Student Council hosted its annual Turkey Drive. This year, a change was made from the usual competition that takes place between seventh and eighth-grade classrooms. Student Council decided to ask the entire school to participate in the food drive this year in hopes of fundraising more money and bringing more food to the local Mora Food Pantry. Each grade competed against the others to see how much money and how many food items they could gather. One teacher per grade was selected to be the “representative” who collected the money and the food. The “battle of the grades” got pretty intense throughout the week, as the eighthgraders and the seniors got off to a strong start. In the selected classrooms, paper plates and feathers were given in order to make “turkeys” to represent the amount of money and food items being donated. The paper turkeys helped keep track of how many feathers each grade had earned. As in the past, students could choose to donate money, in which 50 cents resulted in adding one feather to the turkey, and $1 added three feathers, or they could simply bring in canned food. Each can of food was equivalent to two feathers. Another fun part of the drive that returned to this year’s competition involved students bringing in ramen noodles. If any student brought in five individual packages of ramen noodles, he or she could choose to go to any other class and “steal” one of their feathers. As a school, $2050.88 was raised and 688 cans of food were donated. The drive this year was extremely successful, and compared to last year, Mora High School students raised over five times more money.
Capable Connections just made a donation to Mora Dollars for Scholars. They earned the donation money by collecting and recycling aluminum cans at MHS. Pictured here: Mrs. Stenberg, Jordan and Andrew.
On Oct. 27, Mora schools welcomed a group of Swedish students and teachers from their sister school in Borlange, Sweden. The five students and two teachers were from Hagagymnasiet, one of four high schools in Borlange, which is one hour south of Mora, Sweden. This cross-cultural exchange is now in its 20th year of providing both Mora and Borlange students and teachers the chance to learn about society in another country. The Swedish guests spent time going to both elementary and high school classes, touring Minnesota (Lindstrom, Duluth, etc), and spending time with their hosts: Ethan Anderson, Taylor Strelow, Rosemary Edberg, Grace Marohn, and Derek Johnson. If you would like more information regarding this exchange, please contact Robyn Wallace or Derek Johnson at Mora High School.
Students in sixth grade are working on LEGO engineering in Trailview’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) classroom with Mr. Goebel. Students work to control and program the robotic legos to complete certain actions.
Fairview hosted “Math Madness” during the month of November. Staff hosted a math night for parents and students to come in and enjoy math together. Hands-on-learning is happening daily in the Agriculture classroom. Multiple exciting events: chickens visiting, making ice cream, hatching chicks, guest speakers and much more!

An Invitation to Visit Japan
Be safe Stay clear of downed power lines NEVER TOUCH A DOWNED POWER LINE. Always assume it is energized and call 911 immediately. The International Vasaloppet Skiing Exchange is being held in Asahikawa, Japan March 12-15, 2015. You do not have to ski, so anyone interested in traveling to the northern island of Hokkaido in this Vasaloppet focused trip should contact the Vasaloppet USA office: information@ vasaloppet.us. The Vasaloppet races in Sweden, the USA, Japan and China comprise the International Vasaloppet Skiing Exchange. Ski all four races (take as many years as necessary) and earn the special Vasaloppet Exchange medal. The mission of the Exchange is to promote Vasaloppet skiing and cultural understanding between the four nations.
POWERFUL STORMS can damage power lines. If you see a downed power line: • Stay at least 50 feet away from it and assume it is energized. The ground may also be energized making the entire area extremely dangerous. • Never touch anything that is touching a downed power line. It is as dangerous as the line itself. • If a power line falls on your vehicle while you are in it, stay inside your vehicle until help arrives.

O
n December 25, 2013 Tom Prigge was diagnosed with prostate cancer. The cancer did not respond to either the chemotherapy or the radiation and spread to his lungs, colon, bladder and his pelvic bone. On October 29th, Tom’s doctor stated that he should spend the short time he has left with his family and enjoying life. At the age of 50, most are planning the rest of their life, sadly Tom’s family is planning on how they are going to live theirs without him. Tom is leaving behind his wife Karen, and his two daughters Hannah and Haley. Karen has been a Special Education teacher since graduating college four years ago. Hannah has started her sophomore year at Concordia in Moorhead. Haley is
a sophomore in high school and active in band and on the Bluejacket Soccer Team. Tom and his family have touched so many lives with their kindness, their generosity, and their warm spirit. We are trying to raise as much as we can to help take care of his family in their time of need. Those of us that know Tom have watched our friend’s health slowly worsen over the last year and we have all asked what can we do to help? What can we do to give Tom the caring and the support that he has given us all so freely, whether he has known you for thirty years or thirty minutes? This is what we can do. Please use this opportunity to show Tom and his family what a dierence they have made. Use this opportunity to show Tom that he will forever remain in our hearts.

“TO MY SON” The moment that you died my heart was torn in two, One side filled with heartache, the other died with you. I often lie awake at night when the world is fast asleep, And take a walk down memory lane with tears upon my cheeks. Remembering you is easy, I do it every day. But missing you is heartache that never goes away. I hold you tightly within my heart and there you will remain, Until the joyous day arrives, that we will meet again. Love and miss you, Love Mom & family Jeremy J. Radermacher

Call Gopher State One-Call when you plan a project! Northwest Gas has natural gas pipelines in the Ogilvie/Mora area. Please call at least 48 hours before you plan to begin any machine-assisted excavating. This includes stump grinding, topsoil stripping or any other operation where power equipment is used, regardless of digging depth. Pipelines may not be where you expect! Pipeline marking signs do not indicate a pipeline’s exact location and never can you be sure of the depth of a pipeline. A pipeline may change direction and depth rapidly in a very short distance. The only safe method of locating a pipeline is by calling Gopher State One-Call and having a Northwest employee locate it for you. After you contact Gopher State One-Call a Northwest employee will visit your work site and mark the location of our pipeline for you at no charge. If your plans change after the pipeline is marked, call Gopher State One-Call again. Do not try to guess our pipeline’s location from previous markings or it’s depth from a previous measurement.
