Kindergarten Thanksgiving

On Nov. 26 and 27, kindergarten students at Fairview Elementary participated in Native American Stations, where they learned about the first Thanksgiving in a hands-on way. The students rotated through six different learning stations. At one station, students learned about patterns, beads, and Native American artwork, as they created a beaded necklace. Students also created dream catchers to hang above their beds, while learning why Native Americans used them. At another station, students learned about basket weaving, and even used dried grass, reeds, and sticks to make their own weaving. Students created musical instruments and patterned headbands. The kindergarteners also learned about the Native American, Squanto, who befriended the Pilgrims and taught them how to fish, hunt, find edible berries, and plant corn using fish for fertilizer. The students then planted corn, fertilized with fish, and also had the opportunity to grind corn. Kindergarten students, teachers, and assistants ended the week with a huge Thanksgiving feast, where they dined on cranberries, mashed potatoes, popcorn, venison, gold fish and corn bread. The week was a huge success where much was learned and many memories were made!

Thanksgiving Baskets

This year, students and staff at both Trailview and Fairview collected food to create Thanksgiving baskets for families in our schools. For one week food was collected in each of the classrooms. A large turkey was made for each building and put in its lunchroom. Every student who brought in a donation was able to write his/her name on a paper feather and put it on the turkey. Over 40 families received a box of food each containing stuffing, pie crust and pie filling, canned vegetables and fruit, gravy, potatoes or sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, Jell-O, and other Thanksgiving type foods. Each family was also given a $5.00 Coborn’s gift card to help with the purchase toward a turkey or any other food item the family may have wanted. It was wonderful to see the community work together to help so many families in our schools. When we were low in Coborn’s gift cards, staff between the two buildings pitched in to make sure every family who requested a basket also received a $5.00 gift card. After learning we were low on both pie crusts and pie fillings, one grandmother even donated 20 pie crusts and canned pie fillings! Feedback about the baskets has been very positive and we hope to make this an annual tradition of giving back to the community!

Leadership Training with Rick Rassier

On Monday, Dec. 2, 46 high school students attended leadership training with Rick Rassier. Rick is a physical education teacher at Foley Elementary School. For over 20 years he has also worked as a performance coach and motivational speaker. The student council sponsored the event and all student council representatives were invited to attend. Additional attendees were invited if they were selected by their coaches or activity advisers as leaders or potential leaders. Students participated in many physical challenges that focused on building leadership skills. Key ideas included celebrating progress, being a positive voice, making good choices, and setting goals. While working on activities that provided more of a challenge, Rick would ask “Are you sure you don’t want to move on to something easier?” The students replied with a resounding, “No!” During one activity, students played blindfolded dodgeball. Participants were paired and the blindfolded students relied on their partners to tell them where to go. Mr. Rassier warned students that he would be playing the part of the “evil forces.” Sometimes he would offer assistance in the form of a ball or suggested where to move. At other times, however, he would tell a student he was

giving them a ball and instead place an orange cone in their hand indicating that they were “out” of the game. After the activity, he discussed how he had warned them that he was an evil force, and yet some students still decided to trust him. He pointed out the similarity to poor influences they may encounter and how they may seem trustworthy at times, but students should always be careful. During the dodgeball game, there were also hula-hoops placed on the ground. If a participant ran into the hula hoop, he or she was out. He equated these obstacles to drugs and alcohol. If students remove them from their lives, they remove a lot of obstacles to success as well. The training took place in the high school’s north gym from 8:15-11:15. Students who were interviewed following the training had positive comments. Bryce Norby, a ninth grader, said, “I learned teamwork can get you farther than trying to do it by yourself.” Katie Murner, a tenth grader, stated that it was interesting how Mr. Rassier “used fun games to get us to think about what the real story was.” Overall, the student participants represented Mora well and Rick mentioned multiple times that they were a great group.

Ag Class Is Hands On FOCUS Students Enjoy Successful Achievement

Students in the agriculture classroom are getting hands-on experience when it comes to all different types of animals! From Howie the hedgehog, to baby bunnies, adult rabbits, naked mole rat, snakes, cows and horses, all students within any ag class have been learning about different animals you can own as pets. Students are allowed to bring in their own pets to share within the class as well as allowing them to stay as a classroom tool when covering different animals in the curriculum.

Mora High School’s FOCUS program is PLEASED to announce last school year’s fourth quarter 3.0 GPA recipients. Mora High School’s FOCUS Program is designed to help students overcome barriers in their life by building on their strengths so they can achieve personal and academic success. The following students obtained a 3.0 GPA or higher: Summer S., Isaac L., Sam C., and Ashlie C. Congratulations to these students for their hard work and effort!

Reading Rocks In The Media Center Media Specialist, Mrs. Beck, invited students to participate in a Reading Rocks Incentive Program. Each time a student finished reading a library book, they could fill out a guitar with their name and book they read and hang it up on the bulletin board. They could also put in a vote for their favorite book and their favorite song. The votes were tallied at the end of November and the “Top 10 Tunes” and the “Top 10 Reads” were posted alongside all the guitars with student names on them. Trailview students proved that reading really DOES rock!!!

JEREMY J. RADERMACHER 7181  12909 It’s so hard for me to be apart from you. I’ll see something I wish I could share with you, experience something new and wish you could be part of it. But I hope you know that even when we’re not together, I’m always thinking of you. During the day, you’re with me in thought, so that whenever I see something I think you’d enjoy, you’re sharing it with me. And at night, I fall asleep dreaming of how wonderful it will feel to be back with you where I belong. Every day that we’re apart, I’m looking forward to when we’ll be together again so I can show you how much I missed you... how much I love you. Everlasting love, Mom and family THANK YOU On Sunday, Nov. 24 at 1 p.m. a house party was given for Dewey and Sharon Samuelson as they lost their home to a fire last winter in January. The party was hosted by Julie Doenz, her family, and Anita Doenz at Julie’s home. This was very much appreciated. Thank you so very much. Thank you to all that came and brought wonderful great things to help us in our new home. Thank you all so very much; we love you all. Dewey and Sharon Samuelson IN MEMORY OF DENISE STENSTROM PETERSON May 8, 1963  Dec. 8, 2012 I can shed tears that she is gone or I can smile because she has lived. I can close my eyes and pray that she will come back or I can open my eyes and see all that she has left. My heart can be empty because I can’t see her or I can be full of the love that we shared. I can turn my back on tomorrow and live yesterday or I can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday. I can remember her and only that she is gone or I can cherish her memory and let it live on. I can cry and close my mind, be empty and turn my back or I can do what she would want: Smile, Open my eyes, Love, and go on... I miss you! Love, Delayne THANK YOU Hans is gone, but surely not forgotten. He was a great guy and I miss him. How lucky we are to live in such a caring and loving community. My heartfelt thank you to those many wonderful people that have helped us these last months. Thanks to our pastor who always seemed to know the right and comforting thing to say, and our Grace Lutheran and Park Forest families. Thank you to the terrific staff at the clinic and hospital - what a great group of people! So professional, knowledgable, efficient, caring and compassionate, the county nurse, the physcial therapists. Thanks also to the 911 people - what a comfort to know we can call them when there’s a problem. Thanks to Mike and Jane Ingebrand and their staff and of course, my dear family and the friends who have been there for us always on this long journey. Now Hans is at peace and smiling, because the Vikings finally won a game!! With sincere gratitude, Muriel
